On weekday mornings, the exist- ing train service will operate until 8:54 am., when the last westbound train leaves Ajax. Train service will resume to Ajax and Whitby with the 3:13 pm. tun leaving Union Station and arriv- ing in Ajax at 3:56 p.m. The last train to Ajax and Whit- by will pull out of Union Station at 7:13 pm. and get into Ajax at 7:56 p.m. The first westbound train in the afternoon will leave Ajax at 3:54 p.m. and the last will depart at 7:54 p.m On weekends, there'll be no train service east of Pickering. Mr. Henry says GO is still work- ing on bus times for non -peak hours, but he expects the buses will travel along Hwy. 401. GO was able to trim $2 million of the $6.5 million it had to slash without affecting service but cutting the other $4.5 million will have an impact on passengers. But, most passengers won't be affected too badly, Mr. Henry says, because about 85 per cent of all daily GO ridership is handled dur- ing the morning and afternoon rush hours. The -,-ast majority of riders still have service. With buses, we're not leaving anyone standing on the road without service," he says. The one-way fare to travel from Ajax to Union Station will remain at $4.40 if passengers have to use the bus -train combination. Also starting on July 3, GO will reduce by half the fare -integration subsidy it provides to municipali- ties, from 75 per cent to 37.5 per cent. With fare integration, GO pas- sengers with a valid ticket or pass can board a local transit vehicle at no charge. The local transit authori- ty receives a reimbursement from GO Transit equal to 75 per cent of the adult cash fare. In Ajax, the adult fare is S l .25, so Ajax Transit receives 94 cents for every GO pas- senger carried. In 1992, Ajax Transit received $487,000 from GO under the sys- tem. With the 50 per cent reduction in the subsidy, Ajax Transit will lose $244,000 a year. Mr. Henry says it's up to each municipality to make up the lost revenue. Therefore, the excavated soil has to go somewhere else. "How would you like it if someone told you you can't use your back- yard for the next three months?" The Malvern site, owned by the provincial government and developed for housing years ago, was recently found to be contaminated with lead, Mr. Brenner said in an interview. "Nobody wants that soil." Dave Beach of the ministry of the environment says the soil has been processed into three categories, with highly -contaminated material shipped to Chalk River. Moderately -radioactive soil will be stored in Scarborough, and the third category is considered "clean". Mr. Brickenden says he hadn't heard that the clean soil is destined for Pickering. "The only thing I've heard is that it will be used as daily land- fill cover somewhere. I've never heard any (specific) location." The soil is clean enough that it "could go right into a backyard," he maintains. "The problem we're faced with when people look at this pro- ject is they don't research it until the end. We're not about to dump in somebody else's backyard, believe me." Mayor Wayne Anhurs said town staff will be looking into the issue. Cutbacks are being presented to public sector workers "at the barrel of a gun," the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) argues in a letter to area MPPs. Not so, according to Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman. "We've presented problems and suggested ideas. The idea is to get them to the table to negotiate." Teachers could be asked to forgo pay increases until 1996 along with other public sector employees and have been asked to take one unpaid day off each month Union leaders were to release counter proposals yesterday after refusing to take pan in social con- tract talks which began last week. They'll likely join talks if Queen's Park is receptive to their ideas. While teachers recognize the need to control a "spiralling deficit," such measures would "usurp" a school board's bargaining authority, according to OECTA president Joe Ryan. Though the province can enact wage 6+eezes, "I don't think it's the way to go," admits Mr. Wiseman. "I'd prefer to do the negotiating route first." The proposals also go against tra- ditional support from the NDP, which helped teachers win their 1973 fight for the right to strike and their 1989 baule to protect pensions, he argues. "We are now being told we are the 'fat cats' and unless we are con- trolled we will help plunge Ontario deeper into debt," notes Mr. Ryan. But including labor unions in social contract talks should be taken as a "compliment" according to Mr. Wiseman. "We recognize their value, abilities and intrinsic good Will. "It's because we (the NDP) are who we are that we have included them in the process. It's illogical for them to assume we hold them in some disrespect It's just the oppo- site." Still, Mr. Ryan fears the morale of teachers is being "undermined.. -As long as there are kids, teachers are necessary... They frequently play roles better described as social worker, sturogate parent, psychiatrist (and) police offi- cer," Mr. Ryan explains. Rolling back wages "doesn't appear to make sense," he continues. "At a time when it is desirable to stimulate the economy, why would the government be looking at reduc- ing the incomes of the very people who would be buying the cars, the furniture, the appliances?" But Mr. Wiseman doesn't think they're shopping now. "If they were, revenue from taxes would be up," he argues. "The government cannot continue to run up huge deficits. That's economics as well." Finally, teachers are "skeptical" of a "fiscally-irrespor>sible" govern- ment which "has already gone back on its word on educational funding" when it reneged on transfer pay- ments. Mr. Wiseman is "cautiously opti- mistic" social contract talks will be successful. The nine-year-old Pickering boy will join a walkathon June 6 to raise motley for the fund, and he's hoping residents and businesses here will help him turn in $4,000 at the finish line. It's the fourth year he's canvassed for the branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. While other children are out playing in the May sunshine, Danny will be working for a cause he believes in. For the past six years, he's been in remission from leukemia himself and his future health looks promising, says his father Mark McCarthy. What makes Danny special, perhaps, is his realizing, at just nine years of age, that he can make a difference by taking action. He won't be sitting back waiting for someone else to solve the problem. Many adults have not learned that lesson. Danny became involved in the Leukemia Research Fund through his father's affiliation with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which supports the cause nationwide. Danny, the youngest person who canvasses for the fund, was named top fund-raiser in the Toronto -Niagara Region last year after collecting S 1,800. "I'm doing it for the walkathon, to help raise money," the boy explains. "I just like it." Times are tough for many people, acknowledges his father. "He's going to try to hit all the neighborhood houses. He's going to try his best. Even if he gets 50 cents or $1 per person, it all adds up to his cause." There are many, many good causes you can give your money to, and all of them are deserving. But if you can spare some change for a nine- year-old boy who's got a very grown-up approach to dealing with his disease, you'll have the extra satisfaction of knowing you've helped a young volunteer make his corner of the world a better place. Letters Pet owners forgetting their responsibilities To the editor, I am currently a home owner living on Blueridge Cres. in Pick- ering. On behalf of some of my neighbors and myself, I would like to express my disgust for the inconsiderate pet owners who allow their dogs to defecate on the sidewalks and front lawns along Blueridge from the north-west corner of Bentley Ave. Not only is this unsightly, but The News Advertiser wel- comes letters to the editor on topical issues, controversial matters and anything else of with the change to warmer weath- er, I am concerned about the potential bealth risks for children who play along these sidewalks among the droppings - I was apparently mistaken in believing that it is the responsibili- ty of pet owners to properly dis- pose of their pet's droppings should such "accidents" occur. As residents of Pickering, it is our responsibility to keep our com- munity cleats. We put a lot of time and effort into protesting against the influx of garbage and the development of landfills in our Town, but we do very little about an unsightly problem directly affecting the health of out children. Mother's Day makeovers benefit charity PICKERING - You can buy Mom a makeover at the Picker- ing Town Centre this Saturday and help raise funds for charity. A Mom's Makeover Marathon is being offered at the mall from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with proceeds to the Rose of Durham, a home for young parents. Five merchants are donating staff services of 15 cosmeticians for the nine -hour marathon. The price of a 20 -to -30 minute makeover is $5. The service reg- ularly costs between $25 and $40. People looking after a frail elderly person or a disabled adult can get some time off from the Caregiver Relief program offered by Durham Region Community Care Association. There are two programs offered — In-home Respite and Adult Day Program. Jennifer Rusaw, a recreation therapist with the Adult Day Pro- gram, says both programs provide the primary caregiver with a planned temporary break. With In-home Respite, a per- son comes to the home, allowing the caregiver to "leave for what- ever reason," says coordinator Cheryl Van Luven. The person coming into the home does what the caregiver does, such as preparing and serv- ing a meal, playing cards or going for a walk with the client. The temporary caregiver stays for a minimum of three hours and could stay for several days if nec- essary. In-home Respite began in 1987 and now has 140 clients and 21 temporary caregivers. It's for any adult over 18 years of age. Referrals to the program can come from anyone, says Van Luven, and an assessment is done to see if the client qualifies for the people--c--a,tin-g-J ow` or disabled There is no charge for the assessment, but the cost for a tem- porary caregiver is $5.30 an hour for the first 24 hours and $4 an hour after 24 hours. Clients are billed by Durham Region's social services department at the end of each month. Van Luven says temporary caregivers don't look after chil- dren or pets and can't give nee- dles, but they will make sure a client takes medicine. Also, temporary caregivers aren't allowed to take clients out in a car, but they can travel with the person. Temporary caregivers take a one-week training session, learn- ing such things as basic communi- cation skills, lifting and transfer- ring disabled clients and dealing with Alzheimer patients. They n�. must also be bondable. Van Luven says a temporary caregiver should be a caring per- son and flexible. The are paid $9.50 an hour while looking after a client. There are also regular meetings for temporary caregivers, with guest speakers from Parkinsott's or heart and stroke foundations. In-home Respite and the Adult Day program are available to all Durham Region residents. The Adult Day program runs out of a centre at Westney Rd. S. and Clements Rd. W., Ajax. Rusaw says the program started in May of 1992 and currently has 19 clients ranging in age from 30 to 82. It runs Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with activi- ties planned for the entire day. "It's a full day. If they have different interests, we try to meet their needs," says Rusaw. Transportation to and from the centre is the responsibility of the family or the person coming. A hot lunch is provided by the Red Cross Meals -on -Wheels program. Some clients come every day, while others may come two or three times a week. "We encour- age them to come two times a week, so they're getting the maxi- mum potential out of it. It's a chance to get to know everybody," Rusaw says. The cost is $18 a day and clients are billed by the Region's social services department once a month. If a client can't afford the cost, an assessment is done to see if the person qualifies for a sub- sidy. People from across the Region can participate. Danny McCarthy of Balaton Ave. is hoping to raise about $4,000 going door-to-door in the Bay Ridges area throughout May. He'll be asking both residents and busi- nesses to sponsor him in a June 6 walkathon in aid of the Leukemia Research Fund, a branch of the Canadian Can- cer Society. "He's going to try his best." says his father, Mark McCarthy. "Tures are tough right now, even if he gets 50 cents or $1 per person, it all adds up to his cause." Danny, a student at Sir John A. Macdonald Public ' School, has been in remission from leukemia for the past six years. If he makes it through the summer without the disease flaring up, he could be given a clean bill of health, says Mr. McCarthy. Danny says he'd rather be out raising money for leukemia research than playing or watching TV. "I just like it." he explains. The Town's top administrator will retire at the end of June, accepting an undisclosed sever- ance package and leaving behind a pair of shoes that many feel will be hard to fru. His decision to take an early retirement is a combination of many factors. he says. "I'm hav- ing medical problems that are aggravating the situation some- what, and I'm having certain frus- trations with the political process. Maybe it's time to pack it in and smell the roses... His job as Pickering's most senior staff person has been diffi- cult at times. he concedes. "Very much so. You're much like the meat in the sandwich. It doesn't matter who it is, if they have a beef. they end up in my office." Durham Regional Police sus- pect bandits broke into a bedroom window and opened the front door. Neighbors report seeing teenagers entering and leaving the residence. He started his career with what was then the Township of Picker- ing as assistant to the clerk in 1963. He held the positions of deputy clerk director of personnel and clerk before becoming Picker- ing's fourth Town manager in 1977. Over those years. he's seen many changes to the Town. "Pick- cring as we know it today didn't exist in 1963. There was no recog- nizable form as a Town.- Council own"Council Monday approved a bylaw authorizing Mr. Marshall's severance agreement, with coun- cillor Kip Van Kempen opposing it and personally expressing his gratitude for the Town manager's service. In an interview, mayor Wayne Arthurs said council will review The corporate structure of the Town in light of Mr. Marshall's departure. It's taking an active role in finding work for the job- less. The department has since last August been overseeing the job- sOntario Training program for Durham which Region officials feel could create work for 2,000 people here in the next two years. jobsOntario is a three-year, 51.1 -billion provincial govern- ment training program that match- es unemployed workers with employers. Employers are given up to $ 10,000 for each worker they hire to train the new employee and staff already on the payroll. Trainees are paid the going rate for their chosen job by the employer. The program gives people on welfare and unemployment insur- ance a chance to get the skills they need for today's more chal- lenging job market, says Norm Leigh of the Region's economic development department. . Durham has been allocated $16 million to fund the program for three years. How's it gang so far? "Employers are lined up to take applicants,- says W. Leigh. In exhibition games against the Toronto Nomads on Satur- day, the men's first were run over 45-0, while the seconds fell 38-0. On Saturday and Sunday, 12 members of the Wanderers took part in trials in Brampton for the Ontario rugby team. The provin- cial team hasn't been announced yet. Also, Owen Duncliff is in Japan competing with the Canada under -23 team. The Ontario Rugby League season for men starts the May 15 weekend. The Wanderers' over -35 team made easy work of the Toronto XLs on Sunday, thumping them 55-0. Groen Big Chill goes to camp in Indian Summer By BRUCE FROUDE Durham Staff This summer should be boom- ing for camp operators. All those thirtysomething par- ents will be sending their kids off to summer camp and all because of Indian Summer. It's funny how this tale of the good old days fails to mention black flies and mosquitos. Or worse yet, poison ivy. Who would forget all those hours spent itching and scratching? But that's not what director Dave Binder wanted us to remember and relive. He wanted us to recall the glory days of camp. The canoe trips, the races, the midnight raids and the kisses in the moonlight. Camper Binder takes us on a reunion trip to the legendary Camp Tamakwa on the idyllic shores of Algonquin Park. He says, "I thought it would be a very uneasy experience to go back to summer camp as a grownup. I've made the trip (to Tamakwa) there as an adult a couple of times, and, as much fun as it was, it almost felt like returning to the scene of a crime." At the least Indian Summer could be considered a misde- meanor. It's not criminal that we are subjected to Indian Summer's nostalgic attempt to recreate a better time. The ensemble cast attempts to stake our eyes glaze over and be kids again. It just doesn't work as effec- tively as it could. And that's wor- thy of a citation. Granted, there are some really funny scenes in the movie that will make it enjoy- able and not a compl se waste of tithe for the viewer. Alan Arkin stars as Unca Lou Off The Record... Return of Geldof is a 'happy' one Bob Geldof - The Happy Chub (PdyGrm): Finally freed from the unrealistic expectations that followed his involvement with Live Aid, "Saint Bob" fully tolizes die portow of bis first couple of solo albums, which were spotty but promising. Happy Club may not give us a re -inverted Geldof — he owes trach bene a Bob Dylan/Woody Guthrie, Van Morrison ("House at the Top of the World" is a dead ringer for the latter) and a recent trip through Louisiana's zydeco country — but it's still a terrific record and GeWoPs best since The Boomtown Rats' "The Fate Art of Surfacing." World Party - Baog! (Chrysalis): Karl Wallinger, who produced Geldof s album, kicks in with a pretty good one of his own. 71e ex-Waterboy is building up a slid body of work and Bang! adds to the eclectic mix. From almost straightfor- ward folk to funk, Wallinger delivers a wide range of intim mg songs that show off his care- ativity without bulging the paratnetes of most poopie's pop sensibilities It's a perfect fit. BMy Squire - Tel the Truth (Capitol): In a hard rock world take over by metal and grunge, or virtual cover bonds of former greats, it's refreshing to find an artist who deals straight up, writes his own stuff, and tries to give each song a twist from the usual formula. Tell the Truth won't make you forget the glory days of -The Stroke" and "In the Dark," but it's honest and decent, and you take what you can get. Aaron Neville - The Grand Tour (A&M): Neville's sweet voice takes virtually anything he sings to a notch above the rest, and for that reason, The Grand Tour is notable. But as an album it certainly won't fall into the realm of the classics. The same- ness of most of the MOR -style songs leaves much to be desired and Neville's small attempt to break it up is either o nsuited to his soft style (Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell" is hope- lessly cliche -ridden) or worse, gimmickry, as is his sojourn into country music. Them are a cou- ple of gems, including "I Owe You One," which highlights his amazing tenor, and the tender "Song of "with Linda The Quireboys - Bitter Sweet do Twisted (Capitol): The former Queerboys rode their name change and Rod Stewart imitation to a million -selling debut with A Bit Of What You Fancy and the bit "7 O'Clock" (and it's time for the party!). The ley continues, with the boys unabashed imitation continuing. mixed with their own energetic brand of swagger and grit. While the original has smoothed out the edges and moved on to more mainstream appeal, The Quire - boys keep the sloppy rock & rou ideal alive, and for that reason, I saline diem. the camp owner who desperately wants one of his favorite campers to take over Tamakwa. It brings together Vincent Spano, Julie Warner Elizabeth Perkins, Kevin Pollack, Diane Lane, Bill Paxton, Matt Craven and Kimberly Williams for one last week. And what a week. The only items not resolved are global warming, animal testing and mak pattern baldness. But the topics and relation- ships handled in Indian Summer are interesting even if it is the stuck-up people at camp we're talking about. It's great that all those brown-nosers in all that rugged clothing have problems just like the regular folks. The root of the problem with this movie is it's just too com- mercial.
