That's because "The use of weapons is more prevalent in robberies", notes Durham Regional Police Staff Sgt. Sandy Ryrie. He's referring to a rash of recent robberies, including two in Ajax, where a silver hand- gun was used and to a Whitby bank hold-up where both bandits were armed. "(It was) a robbery by one person with a handgun and one with a longer gun. We consider it to be very serious. "One of these days someone is going to get hurt." Durham councillors were told Wednesday provincial spending cuts will make it necessary for the Region to ham- mer out a new budget and slash spending by $8 million. Ontario treasurer Floyd Laughren's mini -budget announced last Friday included a reduction in unconditional grants to municipalities of 5110 million from $975 million to about S864.2 million. That means Durham will get about S2.2 million less in unconditional grants than it was expecting from the Province. And, a social contract to be negotiated between the Province and all public sector employees will mean the Region would lose another S5.7 million. Durham finance commissioner Jack Gartley told council- lors Wednesday, "We'll definitely have to open the budget See CUTS—Page S Murder suspect nabbed on birthday AJAX - A Toronto man got an unwanted surprise as he celebrated his 22nd birthday at an Ajax pizzeria Tuesday night Durham Regional Police arrested Darryl Sutton at Pizza Pino on Westney Rd. New travelers cheque (& feature from CAA Many people often overlook the fact that the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is a full- service travel agency, and not just a business that provides emergency roadside service. There are, in fact, many benefits to being a member of the CAA. At this time of year, as thoughts turn toward summer getaways, Pickering CAA Manager Lurlene Simoes says travelers cheques for two is a product that will interest many couples. For a small service fee. couples can purchase American Express travelers cheques in both their names, and when they need to cash the cheques, either can do so, without the other one being present. Regular travelers cheques can still be purchased by individuals, free of service charge. Another popular product for CAA members are 'triptiks' - maps with routes outlined for specific destinations. Lurlene says that more triptiks are requested for Florida than for any other destination. We can't ask staff to accept no pay raise." The report prepared by Mr. Cubist and Mr. Gartley revealed that a tax increase of nine per cent would be needed to cover the $7.9 million shortfall in funds from the Province. That works out to $39 per household. In February, the Region approved its 1993 budget, which imposed on ratepayers an average tax increase of 3.5 per cent or about $15 per household. IM Rae,governm ent costsyou dearly Bob Rae and his cohorts are panicking. And, it's going to cost taxpayers dearly. Not only have last week's announced cutbacks by the Province threat- ened an already bare -boned school board budget, they now have munici- palities scrambling for ways to slash costs and boost revenues. Most recently, the Region of Durham, which eats up the smallest por- tion of municipal ratepayers' tax bills, may be faced with cutting $8 mil- lion from its already -set 1993 budget. "We'll definitely have to open the budget and reconsider our expendi- tures," regional finance commissioner Jack Gartley told councillors Wednesday. We applaud any move the Province or federal government make to slash spending. What we don't condone are massive cuts in transfer pay- ments made weeks after municipal budgets have been set for the year. Municipalities already dealt with the unenviable job of number crunch- ing and program slashing. Faced with many ratepayers who are struggling just to get a meal on the table at night, elected officials were caught in a no-win situation. They could increase taxes on ratepayers who can ill afford it or decrease the level of service provided to residents. Since its election, the NDP government has done a poor job with its bank books and your pocketbooks. Now it seems it's trying to play catch up and make Ontario residents believe the Province isn't in the financial disaster that it is. It's doing so at great harm to residents. Cuts must be made. Every sector must pay and chopping jobs that have been protected for years is not an unreasonable move. Fut, rrnegirlg on financial promises made to municipalities and school boards as they went through the arduous task of setting budgets is a cruel and unfair way to do it. _ Slow down, and don't make the little guy suffer for the big guy's past mistakes. Suite #t2, Whitby For Apjxnnunent Call 430-477 Pickering dancers star at Wonderland PICKERING - Two dancers and a choreographer from Pickering will be showcasing their talents at Canada's Wonderland this summer. Brent Moss, 22, and Shannon Lewis, 18, are two of just six dancers chosen to perform in a show called Rock The House at Wonderland's outdoor International Showplace. They were hired after hundreds of dancers from all across Canada were auditioned. Both are students of the Denise Lester Dance Academy. "It will be a very gruelling pace," says Miss Lewis of her summer job, estimating she and fellow dancers will perform the show about 600 times before the park closes in the fall. "It's a great show; it's a lot of fun to do. It has a hip-hop, funky kind of feeling." The show opens this Saturday and runs weekly until June 7, when the pace will step up to five perfor- mances a day, six days a week until early September. Weekend shows continue into October. This season will mark Miss Lewis's third year as a Wonderland performer, last year, she was named Outstanding Female Dancer. Mr. Moss will be dancing at the park for his fifth year and has previously been nominated Outstanding Male Dancer. While their jobs are just begin- ning, Suzie Cunliffe -Brown's duties at Wonderland are over. A former Denise Lester student and now a dance instructor, Mrs. Cunliffe - Brown directed and choreographed the show The Flintstones Go Hollyrock at Wonderland's Woodland Theatre. It's the second time she's choreographed at Wonderland and she, too, has danced at the park previously. Mrs. Cunliffe -Brown, 24, had the job of putting dance steps and action to a musical script and teaching the moves to costumed high-school stu- dents. "It can be difficult, but there's a lot of fun in it." she says. Ms. Lester says she's very proud of Moss, Lewis and Cunliffe - Brown, especially because "There's not a lot of jobs to get. When I go to Wonderland and hear people say, 'oh aren't they good?', I feel like standing up and saying 'I taught them'." But. whichever the Solid vinyl siding adds new life toyourhome Blossoming flowers, a rebirth of nature. The joys of spring are upon us. So who wants to be saddle with the chore of repainting the house when the year's most liberating season is here? Smart homeowners can take the tiresome task of painting off their list of springtime jobs permanently when they re -side their homes with vinyl siding. And, instead of repainting in that same old color again, vinyl siding can dramatically change the exterior look of your home with a wide -range of designs and colors available. ;Major manufacturers have expanded their product lines in recent years to appeal to the wide range of tastes of todav'; stvle-conscious consumers. Working with qualified professional home remod- elers, homeowners can add interesting architectural detailing to their houses with creative applications of vinyl siding. Siding applied vertically and horizontally in combi- nation, or chevron ("V") pattern can create a striking effect on a home's exterior. Gables, dormers and porches are areas particularly suited to architectural detailing. Color co-ordinated soffit and fascia systems also add vibrant or subtle contrasts to the siding. To find out more about restyling your home with solid vinyl siding visit your local home centre and add new life to your home. case, the rewards can be sizeable. This is a great time to build a new deck, re -brick the patio. landscape the yard or apply a fresh coat of paint to a weather - worn garage. You will enjoy the results throughout the summer and the value of your property will be enhanced as well. Opportunities also abound for interior improvements. While you are packing winter clothes up for storage and once again bringing out the spring and summer wear, closets can be reorganized and tidied up for greater ease of use. Investing some additional time now can increase your efficiency later on. You may even be inspired to undertake a thorough spring cleaning. Washing the windows, scrubbing the winter grime from the floors and taking note of any minor household repairs that may be necessary are good beginnings for a springtime overhaul of your home. Be sure to evaluate carefully whether or not the fix -it projects you need to undertake are within your capabilities as a do -it your- selfer. If you do decide to try something that you are unsure about, the staff at your local home centre or hardware store may be able to provide helpful advice and information. Above all, plan ahead. If you are hiring a contractor, you will need to explain exactly what you want to have done. And, if you are doing the work yourself, there is no reason not to be fully pre- pared for the job you are under- taking. The indoor and outdoor unit, are designed to work together as a co-ordinated "team" to pro- vide top performance and maxi- mum efficiency and comfort. 11 homeowners install a new high -efficiency outdoor unit, but don't include a new, equal- ly -efficient indoor unit, the results could be uncomfortable, frustrating and expensive. At best, when air condition- ing or heat pump components aren't properly matched, home- owners will get less cooling or heating — and pay, higher utili- ty bills. The system will still work up to the design efficien- cy, costing homeowners money and possibly providing inade- quate comfort. At worst, improperly matched components could cre- ate undue stress on the system, resulting in premature failure. Consumers should ask installing contractors to replace both outdoor and indoor units when an old system is replaced. In the past two decades, she has continually pushed for a long-term investment policy in housing on both federal and provincial levels. Carol believes that many of the current problems faced by homeowners in today's market are the direct result of a speculative, jump-start approach to housing by the current federal government. Kevin Vandenburg, left, and Durham Lawn Equipment owner Peter Berry, are experienced at servicing lawn mowers and other equipment for local residents. Durham Lawn Equipment Sales & Service helps you be ready for spring With spring in the air, and as homeowners ready themselves for cleaning up their yard, they just might find themselves at a standstill because their lawnmower or other essential equipment won't work. Rather than kick the machine to gain no more than a broken toe, the eager gardener is well advised to take the equipment to Durham Lawn Equipment Sales & Service in Ajax. Small -engine maintenance and repair is a specialty of Durham Lawn Equipment. The busy 2,200-sq.ft. shop is open to the public six days a week. Owner Peter Beery has been in the trade for about nine years. A year ago he started the business, at 855 VVestney Rd. S. and has been going great guns ever since. He services residential and commercial equipment, and also sells equipment by many of the well-known manufacturers. They come with the promise of versatility to go from 10 acres of mowing to grading a gravel driveway or tilling your garden. Ariens and Homelite products are also available through Durham Lawn Equipment. These include assorted trimmers, brushcutters, chain saws, lototillers, plus a full line of such commercial equipment that includes loader tractors. Peter stresses,' "We service everything we sell." In addition, Peter says, "We try to give customers an honest deal." He cites "carburetor problems" as a common occurrence in lawnmowers. Because people leave the fuel sitting in the mower without adding stabilizer during the winter, very often the mower won't start, come spring. Peter adds that dull blades and mower decks that are not kept clean are other problems gardeners often have to deal with. But as Peter will attest, those are relatively minor problems for Durham Lawn Equipment to resolve. For customer convenience, pick-up and delivery are available.
