Ten million dollars in provincial funding should be spent to prevent the Pickering site from becoming a subdivision, MTRCA board members agreed. The news means "the deal will now be able to close with (landowners) Bramalea and Landford," says Pickering councillor Kip Van Kempen. Ontario politicians sitting on the board engaged in "a heated debate" for over two hours, "debating, bickering and fghting" before adopting the project, says Mr. Van Kempen. About half of the 330 -acre forest, which would otherwise be bulldozed for about 1,000 homes, will be saved. While Queen's Park will contribute $10 million toward the purchase, the total pricetag on the property is $13.8 million. The MTRCA expects both the Town of Pickering and the Region of Durham to contribute funds to make up the shortfall, adds Mr. Van Kempen. The federal government, environmental groups and "anyone and everyone who's got an interest" will also be approached for dona- tions, he says. k rU f p J a`-• ,4 zlr :via, . - Minimmodels Models at the Pickering Town Centres "You Take The Stage" Fashion Event last week included Michael Cannon, left, and Johnathan Wigs. "That's good news," she says of the MTRCA decision. "We'll be working with the province." Discussion of how much money Pickering taxpayers should contribute won't be brought up in council chambers anytime soon, predicts Mr. Van Kempen. "1 think it will be awhile. I think we'll want to wait until a bit more (information) is flushed out in the plan." Queen's Park has yet to make a formal announcement that it will hand over the $10 million. Towns 'ship of fools'wrangles' over how to deal with media PICK ERING - A motion to pro- hibit Pickering politicians from communicating with residents through the media without the mayor's permission was tabled by council Monday night. Guide- lines for appointees to keep council informed of committee Imre" or urtlner tun - kering. Earlier in the meeting, resident Terry Nuspl told council the motion "does not go far enough". She sug- gested politicians be required to get written permission to speak to the press, write a letter on town letter- head or meet with a developer. Those rules would "put an end to the grandstanding, one-upmanship and jostling for the limelight," she said. "I feel I'm in a storm -tossed ship of fools. We are the laughing stock while you councillors fight over who gets to play captain hero." Mr. Wellman's motion called for any council appointees sitting on boards, agencies or committees to refrain from issuing a press reports and activities were also included in the motion. Mr. Wellman acknowledged that local media aren't impressed with his pro- posal. "We didn't want to muzzle anybody or dabble with democra- cy," he explained, adding that his intention was that the mayor should be consulted prior to a formal press conference or any "major announce- ments" to reporters. He said Mrs. Nuspl's sugges- tions go "far beyond the invent" of his proposal and disagreed that council has made Pickering citizens a "laughing stock". Mr. Brenner suggested amend- ments to the wording of the motion to allow individual councillors to give opinions to the press and "ensure (there are) no misunder- standings". She put a perfectly healthy baby to bed at night and. in the mornine. she found him dead. Like thousandti of other parents who are the victims of crib death or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Gloria doesn't know why her baby died. Life simply dealt a crux! blow. Despite expen- sive. intense and ongoing research. the medical community still can't tell Gloria and her hus- band Jamie why, eight years ago. their baby became a victim of SIDS. The medical community does, however. know some things about these mysterious deaths: There is no way to tell when such a death is going to happen: most SIDS Our family life was typical of any youn_, couple facing the adjustments that go with raising* two sons under the age of two. But our lives changed in an instant when 1 awoke that morn- ing and discovered our baby, not yet three months old, lying face down in his carriage bed. My husband, Jamie, had not yet left for work; but his attempts at CPR were in vain. My memory of the days after the funeral is foggy. What 1 remember the most is the incred- ible intensity of the pain! For the sake of our older son, Trevor, I had to perform the usual daily tasks, but inside I felt as if I were dying. Everyone seemed to go about their own lives, even though mine had come to a crashing halt, and I was angry at the world for conunuing to turn. These situations compounded the pain of having to explain to everyone who asked about my boys what had happened. My life was miserable for a while, and I was almost certain I was W ?W ?W hy* hye hyo 0 Joan Ransberrm' explores the pain of SIDS With Oshawa's Gloria Mills babies die while sleeping: it docs not always happen in the baby's crib and the babies die in anv position -.on their backs. on their sides and on their tummies. Also. the baby does no( cry out. Parents are assured: their little ones did not suffer. Perhaps most impor- tant: No one is to blame. !here is absolutely nothing Gloria could have done to prevent her son's death. Waiting for the breakthrough that will explain these deaths is hard. Gloria has. however, found ways to make the waiting easier: Gloria comforts parenLs in the Oshawa -Whitby area who are experiencim, grief linked to SIDS. In doing this, she works with the Durham Perinatal Bereavement Association. Gloria also publishes The SIDS Network Newsletter. Published from her Crowells St. home in Oshawa three times a year, the newsletter ii mailed to more than 400 families across Canada and the united States. The purpose of the publication is twofold: to comfort and to edu- cate. Gloria has collected an abun- dance of information on SIDS. She pasties the information on. She points out that SIDS is the most common cause of death among children aged one week to one year, claiming more lives each year than all childhood cancers, heart disease and abuse combined - Gloria's newsletter speaks from the heart... Parents submit personal writings to be shared with others. Gloria knows, first hand, that sharing feelings with understand- ing. compassionate and lovine people can help the healing and eventually, the accepting process. "For me, the best therapy is to A MOTHERS STORY going insane. Finally, our minis- ter referred us to another local couple who had lost their son to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syn- drome) five years before. Through Brian and Debbie, Jamie and I realized that we weren't losing our minds. It was perfectly normal for us to feel the guilt of "wondering what we had missed," and to feel angry at God for taking our baby. We learned that, in time, the hope- lessness of that incredible, heart - wrenching pain would subside. It has .been five years sin Travis' death, and working through my grief has been a slow, uphill climb. I am no longer angry at God for taking my son, and I have learned to accept this loss, but it still feels unfair to me. The death of a child is one of the hardest things in the world, and it is even more difficult when the cause is unknown. There is no -finger of blame" to point at anyone or anything. When Jamie and I received the autopsy report from the coro- E=BX GLOMArM#X- S -A ner's office, I secretly hoped that it would have some tangible evi- dence that Travis had died from a known disease, but that wasn't the case. Apart from some pin- point hemorrhages around the thymus and heart, everything appeared to be normal, which infuriated me. One cannot go through such an experience and not somehow feel changed within. For us, the invincibility of youth had allowed us to believe that tragedies happened to everyone else, not to ew -Whatever inno- %TitC," says Gloria. -The hardest part of losing a child is dealing with the empti- ness: There's just no place to put the love...The baby's gone. but the love remains. When Gloria works on the newsletter it's her way of cuddling her baby. "Tbe newslet- ter helps others and it helps heal me," she says. The newsletter is popular. As the demand for the publication grows so does the cost, now esti- mated at S7.000 a year. Gloria gets donations from some of the families on the mwl- ing list. But it's not near enough to cover the cost. Gloria is appealing to local service clubs in the hopes that they will help. Also, she wel- comes individual donations. Two months after Travis died, I became pregnant again. I was frightened at the possibility of losing another child, but Mal- lory Evelyne was born on Octo- ber 22, 1986, and she has sur- vived my fears, anxiety and paranoia. She has grown into a beautiful little girl who has brought a lot of love, joy and hope back into our family. Travis still lives in our hearts and minds. We will, of course, always love and miss him very much. Through his dying, we have learned one of the hard realitites of this life; Now, we can better understated and appreciate others' sorrow. Through Mallory's birth, we -were able to get on with the joy of living. Five years ago, I never thought I would be happy again, but I am, it doesn't mean I miss Travis any less, only that I have reached another milestone in this life. APKtL 2L 19U C>P1n1cn:::-- '.Leadershi8p, vision lacking"in JK plan It would be more positive if the News Advertiser could agree with the provincial government for delaying the introduction of mandatory junior kindergarten based on Ontario -wide opposition to the plan. But, as fortuitous as the move may be for school boards to postpone implementation of JK, it's primarily because of NDP mismanagement in Ontario and the empty till it has at Queen's Park. Despite that, and despite the News Advertiser's traditional position against the costly start-up requirements, we couldn't agree more. Bob Rae's New Democrats have backed off on JK implementation, giv- ing school boards until 1997 to set up the program. Naturally, Durham Region favors the move because it has long been an opponent of the previ- ous implementation date (1994) which would cost an estimated S24 mil- lion. Clearly, the New Democrats realize the burden they would be placing on school boards across the province if they were to insist on JK imple- mentation while simultaneously decreasing funding. Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman made it clear this week that his gov- ernment isn't backing away from JK. But he would have us believe the move is rooted entirely in `listening to what school boards have had to say. That's just a political smoke screen created by the New Democrats, and Ontarians can see through it. The money the Province had earmarked for the introduction of 1K next year will likely never make its way to Durham, while the school board continues to struggle with other education priorities for students here. Junior kindergarten is an education provision the News Advertiser has traditionally supported, but not at the expense of other regional initiatives or facilities, and certainly not at the expense of other students. When succeeding governments in Ontario have more money in the till and a clearer vision of policy, junior kindergarten should find a place in Ontario schools. But not now. Not without leadership. Not without vision. Letters IWA chairman has reader irked To the editor. The following is a copy of a let- ter sent to Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman. I am writing to share with you an incident that took place last week which has greatly distiressed my wife and I. Following the April 1, 1003 public meeting with the IWA at the Metro East Trade Centre, we approached Walter Pitman, Chair- man of the Board of the IWA, and Conrad Geim of his staff, to per- sonally express our concerns about Me way Pickering has been unfair- ly treated by his organization. Mr. Pitman's response to our comments was to laugh in our faces, and to say "It doesn't mat- ter, the process will get hung up, and thea there will be an election, and thea die whole thing will start over." As you know, the past four years have been extraordinarily stressful for my family, the Hamlet of Whitevale, and the entire Town of Pickering, as we have been faced with first the P-1 dump, and more recently the fact that we are within the impact zone of four out of five IWA Durham sites, plus a York -Metro site. Living with this situation, our young children (ages two and six) have suffered, as most of our spare time is invested in trying to under- stand all the technical data the IWA publishes. Our financial resources have been stretched to the limit, because we are denied funds to retain experts to help as understand what the IWA is doing. Our house is worthless becatrse of the dumps. Our jobs and careers have suffered as we cannot just leave tie fear and stress at home. And after four years of this, our health is suffering. It's just not fair. If Mr. Pitman's statement is »: The. Leave us alone to pick up the pieces and try to put our lives back together. If Mr. Pitman is lying to us, then how can he be fit to serve in such an important position? If he will lie to us, then we must expect that his whole organization will lie to us. In any event, how can we ever believe anything that they say or do? I think, Mr. Wiseman, that you Help should be directed to those who really need it To the editor, In reading about MPP Jim Wisemart's pre -budget discussion (March 26), I was pleased to see that Durham Board of Education chair Louise Farr gave him an ear- ful concerning the province's extravagant plans to implement Junior kindergarten. I heartily con- cur with her stand. However, it was Mr. Wise - man's response to her that puzzled me. Surely he was misquoted. In fact, I would suggest the opposite is true. Taking four-year-old chil- dren out of loving and secure homes and institutionalizing them is much more likely to contribute to the outcomes described by Mr. Wiseman. Granted there are a small num- ber of children in difficult home situations. The remedy, however, is not to institutionalize all four- year -olds, with all its financial and social repercussions, but to direct help to those few who need it. Linda Wainwright, Pickering are doing a pretty good job for us, and I would hate to think that our only protection from this unfair sit- uation is to vote you out of office, as Mr. Pitman suggests. Moi sup, ggon Iola h Owrodx 1 yaw.1p0 Fe, boon Reader happy with MP's performance To the editor, As a taxpayer fed up of politi- cians who say one thing as the opposition and another while on the campaign trail and still anoth- er once in office I was determined to monitor my MP's performance throughout his term. I was going to be to politicians what Ralph Nader is to consumer products. One promise that I heard our Federal MP make during his cam- paign was to be accessible to his constituents. I don't think anyone, including myself, gave much thought to how he would do this. After all there are approximately 185,000 constituents in Ontario Riding. Well, despite all the pub- licity cantered around Ross Per - rot's and Bill Clinton's town hall meetings over the past few months, some people still don't know that Rene Soetens has been holding town hall meetings ever since being elected into office over four years ago. Nevertheless, I'm glad I knew. By attending these town hall meetings, (Vox Pops) not only was I able to be heard, but like- wise, I was able to debate and bet- ter understand the rationale and correctness of some less popular decisions which this past govern- ment has been making in spite of the negative impact on their politi- cal popularity. An important by- product of these meetings was an enlightened constituent who learned that finally this country had a government that was honest with the people it was elected to serve and prepared to put the country's best long term interest ahead of the party's popularity. Through these same forums I became involved in two constitu- tional projects through which I had the opportunity of meeting with our elected official more often than even the town hall meetings provided. Somewhere along the line I gave up my Ralph Nader hat. I saw Rene Soetens' continued commitment to Canada and his constituents throughout his mandate. I found that he pos- sessed those qualities which so many other Ralph Naders of poli- tics demand — integrity and abili- ty. Perhaps that is why I was so pleased to read that Rene Soetens was thinking of running for the leadership of his party. I know that he will do the constituents of Ontario Riding proud should he decide to run for the position of leader. I encourage him to do so with the same guts and openness he has demonstrated throughout his mandate. I won't wish him luck because luck doesn't make a 'It doesn't make sense' To the editor, 1 read with interest the article announcing the location of a new wholesale warehouse in Ajax. Blake Hossack representative for Markborough Properties announced that "Other retail ten- ants, such as supermarkets, fash- ion outlets, and sporting goods stores can be expected to locate in the largest mall in Ontario" in the near future. As a retail businessman in Ajax for the past 20 years I am asking myself, who in their right minds would want to locate and sell retail, with all the high rents and associated costs in a mall where the major tenant will be selling such things as clothing, groceries, drug stone dons, spoxt- ing goods, automotive products, TVs, stereo equipment, etc., etc., etc. at wholesale prices? Over 400 students will con- verge on the Metro East Trade Centre to compete in such con- tests as welding, computer- aided drafting and mechatron- ics. The aim of the competition is to reward students for excel- lence, involve industry in directly evaluating student per- formance, and to keep training relevant to employers' needs. Gold -medal winners from regional competitions, including the Durham Skills Challenge, are eligible to compete. Last year, Durham students collected five gold, five silver and six bronze medals. Students who earn gold medals at the provincial contest qualify to compete in the United States Skills Olympics in Louisville, Kentucky in June. Last year, Harwood Secondary School's Randy Vandenberg and Durham College's Matthew Dodds each took home a bronze medal from that meet. The Ontario Skills Competi- tion will be held Saturday, May 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Metro East Trade Centre, Brock Rd. and Hwy. 401, Pickering. The hospital's Lifelong Friends Bed Campaign, which is raising money to replace 20 -year- old beds with new electric mod- els, needs a boost. About 150 new beds will be needed when the hospital's new wing opens this July, and only 60 beds have been purchased to date. Campaign chairman Anita Witty is challenging groups and businesses to come up with inno- vative ways to raise money for a bed. "When it's a group buying (a bed), it doesn't have to be a lot of money (per person)," she says. "It can be $1 a week or S2 a week. We really need to get com- mitments, even if they don't come up with the money now." She suggests company employees could organize regular 50-50 draws or neighbors on a street could raise funds together. Each bed, which will include a side table and over -bed table, costs S5,000, and pledges can be spread out over a number of years. For example, a group could pledge $1,000 a year for five years. Families can also request that donations be made to the bed campaign in memory of a loved one. Individuals and groups can also pledge a total of S 1,000 to the campaign; when four others do the same, a new bed is paid for. Lifelong Friends Bed Campaign chairperson Anita Witty gets a boost from organizers of the Bay Ridges Hockey Tournament and members of the Ajax Royal Canadian Legion. The hockey touma- ment raised $7,500 for the bed campaign, while the Legion has pledged funds to buy 20 beds. With Mrs. Witty, from left, are Dave Griffiths of the hockey tournament, Jim Kelly of the Legion and Bill Phillips of the Legion. Each bed will bear an engraved plaque recognizing the donor. The Ajax Royal Canadian Legion has made the single largest contribution to date, pledging funds for 20 beds at a total cost of S 100,000. Many of you must have thought I had vanished for good. Not so. I was however very busy directing two plays — The Boys Next Door for Scarborough The- atre Guild and The Philadelphia Story for Amicus Productions in North York. 1 covered the THEA Awards and will bring you a report on how our local thespians fared in an upcoming issue. Also next week I hope to bring you a review of Theatre Durham's next production, Agatha Christie's towards Zero. Enough diversion, now to the topic at hand — Herongate Din- ner Theatre's current production of An Evening on Broadway. Herongate has traditionally been known as the home of com- edy and farce over the past few seasons. However it's expanded the playbill to include some very fine thrillers. This present offer- ing is a delightful step forward into the world of musicals. It was however an experiment to see how audiences would react and for that reason is only scheduled to run until May 8. What a shame because the audience loved it, myself includ- ed. And my feeling is that Heron - gate could easily sell out a 10 - week run. If you are like me, you will resent having to pay 570.90 to see the hit musicals when they come to Toronto. You will how- ever be delighted to know that for a third of that you can see and hear most of the major hits from those same musicals performed by a cast which is as talented and full of energy as any musical cast I have ever seen anywhere. Just as an aside, Marlene Han- drahan, one of these fine per- formers, recently picked up a THEA Award as the best lead actress in a musical and, when you see this talented young lady perform, you will understand why. Director -choreographer Shari Robinson and musical director Leslie Magder have done a superb job. Lighting by Vance Dick was right on and helped bring out the special moments of each number. Thanks to a new sound sys- tem, Marg Carey did a masterful job. The eight performers were simply brilliant. To single out any one would be totally unfair. Geoffrey Coulter, Derek Faulcon- cr, Randy Pryce, Peter Hurley, Judi Cragg, Lise Anne Bourgeois, Judy Gans and Marlene Handra- han sang and danced their hearts out through 20 Broadway hits. My own favorites? Well how can one not love Try to Remem- ber from the Fantastiks sung so beautifully by Randy Pryce or Judy Gans and her beautiful ren- dition of Send in the Clowns from Sondheim's A Little Night Music. You could hear a pin drop as Geoff Coulter sang Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera and Lise Anne and Derek sang All I Ask of You from the same show. There were also moments of laughter, especially when Mar- lene, Randy and Geoff performed Triplets from the show The Band- wagon. I could go on and on about this 1K 80ift $129o5 oslwoBiggest Por"it PockcW Ever!
