Catholic
secondary
teachers
may strike
By LINDA WHITE
Staff Reporter
DURHAM - Catholic high school teachers may
soon vote on their board's final contract offer and, if
it's rejected, whether to call a strike.
The Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Associa-
tion (0)E(-T'A), Durham secondary unit, has asked
the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate Schex►I
Board for its final contract offer after talks broke off
last week.
Another meeting between the two sides has been
set for April 21, but if it fails to produce a new deal,
the board's 320 teachers will go to the polls April 23
and mark two ballots — whether to accept the con-
tract and whether to take strike action if it's turned
down.
A strike is "anything meant to produce interfer-
ence in rxxmal procedures," explains union president
Blair Morris. It could include a full withdrawal of
services, rotating strikes at the board's six high
schools, a work -to -rule campaign which puts a stop
to all extra -curricular activities, or pink -listing the
board by telling job applicants of the employer's
negotiating history.
The union must give the board five days' notice
before taking strike action. "That's the legal require-
ment, but that's not the intent," assures Mr. Morris.
Teachers define destreamed class size as the num-
ber -one issue in negotiations.

Women fight back
FROM PAGE 1
Those mistakes included misunderstanding the role
of the Crown Attorney. For years, Mrs. Lupton
assumed be represented her. She later turned to the
Victim's Guide to the Canadian Criminal Justice Sys-
tem, which spells out such things as the role of the
Crown Attorney to prosecute those accused of crime
on behalf of the public, of which the victim is but one
member.
The victim, who is not a legal party to
a trial, participates only as a witness. And
while they may hire their own lawyer for
legal advice, that lawyer is no more legal
party to proceedings than is the victim
and can speak for the victim in the court-
room only with the permission of the
judge.
"As victims, we all have problems with the pro-
cess," admits a group member. "It's all foreign to
you. You're out in left field. In hockey, for instance,
you know the boundaries. In court, you don't know
the rules at all."
Even those who don't understand the rules well are
skeptical of a system they believe gives too much
leniency to criminals, too much power to lawyers, and
too little thought to victims and their families.
Coalition members are sharing their views with
such groups as The Violence Prevention Council of
Durham Region and The Metro Action Committee on
Public Violence Against Women and Children
(METRAC).
In the meantime, they're helping each other over-
come personal battles and refer one another to rele-
vant resources.
"At fust, it's a humiliating experience to tell your
story," admits one woman. "You feel depressed to go
this route — putting your life in the hands of
strangers.
"You admit things you don't want to admit. But bit
by bit, as you listen and learn, you
become stronger. The key is knowing
you're not alone"
Mrs. Lupton agrees. "We all have a
problem with trust. We've been fighting
the (criminal justice) system so long, it's
hard to believe someone wants to do
something for you.
"No one sits in judgement of one another," she
adds. "We've all been hurt in our own ways ... it takes
time to build the trust, but that's the worst of it."
The coalition, which regularly holds small support
group meetings, will also host a public information
meeting Wednesday, April 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. The
topic of discussion is Violence Against Women. Does
the System Work? A film will be shown.
It will be held at the Rouge Hill Library, 1340
Rougemount Dr., south of Hwy. 2. Pickering.
Refreshments will be served.
For more information, or for immediate support

Board 'more than fair': vice -chair

and basic -level students (in
September)," explains Mr. Mor-
ris. "Our board also has a policy
of full integration. Together,
thev'll create all kinds of
demands on a teacher's time and
abilities."
Teachers are demanding small-
er classes of up to 25 students,
while the board wants as many as
32 in each class.
According to Mr. Morris,
teachers "are extremely flexible
on salaries" and have "revised
substantially" initial demands for
a 4.67 per cent pay hike.
(The board had offered an
increase of 0.6 per cent, while a
fact finder appointed by the Edu-
cation Relations Commission rec-
ommended a one per cent raise.)
Meanwhile, the two sides hold
different views on why talks
broke down.
Board vice -chair Mary Zecchi-
no says it received word from
Premier Bob Rae's office to "sus-
pend negotiations" until the
Province had worked out its
social contract — an agreement
aimed at restructuring the public
sector and reducing its costs.
The board has since
announced its willingness to
"resume negotiations," pointing
to more recent direction from
Queen's Park that suspension of
contract talks is "voluntary."
Mary Zeochkio
But Mr. Morris says the board
"walked out on negotiations" and
he was assured by the Education
Relations Commission it was
"business as usual" and contract
talks could proceed.
Our decision to vote on the
board's offer was forced on us by
the board's failure to negotiate,"
he adds.
Further, Mr. Morris calls a
strike vote "insurance" because,
without it, the board can "arbitrar-
ily change the collective agree-
ment" 60 days after the fact find-
er's report is mate public. (It was
released Feb. 4.)

"It would be an agreement by
one party and we'd have no
choice but to accept it. I'm not
certain how long the agreement
could be. Could it be five years?"
But the board believes it has
made "more than a fair offer,"
says Mrs. Zecchino. –The reality
is our board is being as fair as it
can be given the economic
times."
Last year, a work -to -rule cam-
paign began in mid-January and
lasted two -and -a -half months, a
period which saw numerous stu-
dent protests.
That job action brought the
average secondary teacher's
salary to S54,153 from $51,330,
with the highest pay at $62,961,
up from $59,344.
In 1990, the teachers staged an
18-dav strike. Their salaries were
decided in binding arbitration.

'tie's tusuy going on his way'
B
rian's departure cause for national holiday
To the editor,
I think that I've just died and
gone to heaven. No, I'd better not
wish that because my family will
have to pay the taxes on my
estate.
And they can't just put me in a
cardboard box and bury me in the
back yard because that's against
the environment (which is okay by
me). If they take me to the ceme-
tery, the hearse will be able to find
it because we will have the much
needed bilingual signs erected on
the 401, and I hope everyone
attending the service have lots of

loose change to pay at the toll
booths they encounter on the way.
Maybe they can car pool it.
Anyway, the big news is that
Brian is going to quit politics, and
just when I was going to write him
another letter. Now who's going to
answer it. If by chance Barbara
McDougall becomes the next lead-
er of the Conservative party, will
the Women's Rights movement
come down on me because I don't
like her and they just may think
that it's because she is a women.
Hope not, because my wife is also
a woman.
Say goodbye to one of the most
mistrusted prime ministers that has
ever been in power in this country.
He is under the impression that the
historians will say he was a good
prime minister. I won't be around
that long to read about it. In fact,
he has done so much harm to this

country during his terms, we might
not have anything left unless the
newly -formed government can
undo the mess we are in.
The GST, Meech Lake, the
Constitution, Immigration,
Refugees, Multiculturalism, Free
Trade, Abortion, Capital Punish-
ment, and the list goes on and on.
He never solved any of them and
has left us hanging. If he calces a
job with American Express, I'm

going to return my credit card.
He's finally going on his way. I
think Canada should declare a
national holiday so that every year
at this time we can celebrate his
quitting and jumping a sinking ship
that he himself has put a big hole
in. Do I like this man you may ask.
Yes. I do. he finally did something
that makes me happy.

Disney simplicity. Sure, it caters
to the male audience. But who
cares? The Sandlot is what movies
are all about — it's good old-fash-
ioned fun. Judging by the kids
who were rolling in the aisles at
the sneak preview on the week-
end, this will be the hit predicted.
It will grab you by the nosW-
gia and drag you back to a forgot-
ten time. A time where nothing
mattered but getting to the dia-
mond before your breakfast had
time to settle.
And a time and place while the
game hinged on keeping the hall
from going over. under, through
or past the left field fence.
That time is captured perfectly
in The Sandlot. How many boys
or girls haven't rushed through
chores a get to the diamond at the
same time as die rest of the guys?
Tbew is a piece of everyone in
this movie. There's the geek that
can't play baseball, but wants des-
perately to belong. We see the ath-
letic kid who has no right to be
included in the same league as his
neighborhood pals. He's just too
good, but they're friends and it's
more important than playing on a
perfect field in matching uniforms.
And, of course, there's The
Beast out m left field who has all
the players scared to death. His
master is just as frightening.
The Sandlot will drawn compar-
isons with Stand By Me because
of its boyish charm and narrative
but the good news for parents is
this movie doesn't resort to the
extensive swearing Stand By Me
did. A plus in these times of car

redesigned
for the 1990s
For 1993, Ford's Ranger com-
pact pickup is completely
redesigned for the trucking needs
of the '90s, with an aerodynamic
shape, a complete restyling inside
and out, brilliant colors and pow-
ertrain changes as well.
Exterior styling changes give
the Ranger pickup a more aerody-
namic, contemporary look incor-
porating design elements such as
a rounded front end and slightly
sloped hood that sweeps down to
flush headlamps. The new
bumper follows the contour of
the hood and the grille integrates
the whole front end, with a mod-
ern "aero -tough" look.
Aero -style mirrors (manual or
optional electric), semi -flush
glass, limo -style doors and a
refined, rounded -edged bed and
easy -to -open tailgate complete
the outside look. Seven new exte-
rior colors highlight the dramatic
changes in the Ranger's styling
for 1993 adding to its eye appeal.
Inside, the new car -like interior is
more functional and more
ergonomic than in the past. A
new steering wheel, instrument
panel, headliner, seat and door
trim give Ranger an entirely new
interior look. The restyled seats
with headrests, door panels con-
toured to complement the interior
design, optional map pockets and
ergonomic placement of electric
window, door lock and mirror
controls for models with "high
series" interior trim enhance the
driving experience.
The Ranger receives a larger,
more powerful V-6 engine which
increases towing an cargo capaci-
ty, while a wider track width
improves the Ranger's stance on
the road. Ranger engine choices
for 1993 range from the 2.3 -litre
twin -plug EFI four -cylinder to
€ 3.0 -litre and 4.0 -litre EFI V-6
engines. Ranger is offered with a
five -speed manual transmission
standard, or a four -speed over-
drive automatic is available as an
option.
Improved steering, better corro-
sion protection, reduced wind noise
and a redesigned tailgate latch are
among the hundreds of details Ford
has improved on Ranger for 1993.
The extensive choice of power -
plants is matched by a choice of
models — two -wheel drive or four-
wheel drive, long -wheelbase,
short -wheelbase, or SuperCab —
featuring XL, XL Sport, XLT and
STX trim designations.
4x4 buyers will be attracted by
Ranger's choice of manual or
automatic four-wheel drive and
the Ranger 4x4's exclusive
"tough truck" features. Ranger
4x4s come with wheel flares, a
€ special grille, distinctive wheels
and an integral fog lamp lower
front valence panel. SuperCab
buyers will be impressed by the
largest extended cab of all com-
pact trucks.
While the previous Ranger
was Canada's best-selling com-
pact pickup and Canada's pickup
fuel economy champion the new
Ranger's style and size are on tar-
get for the current popularity of
€ trucks as personal vehicles with
its strong appeal to young buyers.
With its all-new look and a host
E of driver -oriented convenience
features, Ford has positioned
Ranger to remain Canada's com-
pact pickup leader through the
1990s.

Canadian -built
LH sedans are
radical cars
Ever since the first cars were
built. their creators have been
admonished to "not reinvent the
wheel."
Instead their efforts have
focused on the continuing evolu-
tion and refinement of the auto-
mobile.
When Chrysler began planning
for a totally new kind of car, it
was realized that the time had
come to set new standards of
design, engineering. quality and
environmental concern.
Thus, the automaker decided to
reinvent the way vehicles were
developed and produced. To
achieve that end. Chrysler orga-
nized the people responsible for
the creation of tomorrow -s cars
and trucks into interdisciplinary
platform teams. Designers. engi-
neers, representatives from manu-
facturing and even outside suppli-
ers would work closely together
from the very beginning.
Next the carmaker invested
USS 1 billion to create the
Chrysler Technology Centre, the
world's newest and most
advanced automotive engineering
facility. There, all the disciplines
of the vehicle development would
be interconnected under one mas-
sive roof to streamline communi-
cations and foster a new team
spirit.
The result is the all-new
Chrysler Intrepid — the future of
automobile design.
It is a design which is as revo-
lutionary as was the Magicwagon.
And it is likely going to change
how cars are designed from this
point on.
Chrysler calls it "Cab
Forward." This unique design
moves the front wheels to a wider
stance, the windshield further for-
ward and the rear wheels back.
The improved aerodynamic
shape not only gives the car more
passenger room, it also improves
access to the rear seats.
The most important improve-
ment is in the car's handling. The
longer wheelbase and lower cen-
tre of gravity give Intrepid a more
responsive feel and a superior
ride.
The Intrepid is powered either
by the standard 3.3 -litre V6 or an
optional 3.5 -litre. 24 -valve V6
which produces 213 horsepower.
"Cab Forward" is likely going
to get copied by everyone. It has
to. Just because it makes so much
sense.
A true appreciation of Intrepid
can only be gained from sitting
behind the wheel. A visit to your
local Chrysler dealer will fix that.
They will be glad to arrange a test
drive for you.
And once you have test driven
Intrepid, you will understand why
automobiles will never again be
the same.

The Sauter's Inn team, from left, Mike, Helen, Joseph, Renate and Carlos. The
staff is looking forward to serving a variety of seafood dishes this weekend.
A message from the Sauter's Inn management team.,...
Our motto is, "we are here to
serve you and help you forget,
for a few hours, the problems of
the world."
When you come to the
restaurant in the courtyard at
Pickering Village, you step into
a world that is reminiscent of a
relaxed European atmosphere.
There is a choice of many
imported or Canadian wines,
draft or Canadian beers. Carlos,
the chef, and Joe, the sous
chef, prepare some of the best
German and Hungarian foods.
In addition to our regular
menu, we have a special every
day which includes on the
weekend, Roladen,
Sauerbraten, and other
specialities, plus some of the
largest and tastiest pork hocks
you have ever seen.
Or join us for Sunday brunch,
German style. We welcome
your presence here, but please,
give yourself a little time to
enjoy the ambience.
When we are busy, dinner will
not be on the table in 10-15
minutes. Most of our meals are
prepared when ordered;
therefore, it stands to reason
when 25-30 people come in
within half an hour, we cannot
serve them all at the same time.
We take pride in our good
food and service and will not
rush it just to get it out.
So just relax - because you
have canned it - and enjoy the
background music; also, now
on weekends, there is new,
live, dinner music.
On Good Friday the restaurant
will be serving a variety of
seafood dishes; and for Sunday
brunch, there will be special
treats for the children.

Why Advertise In Focus On Bushes
Durham Uusiaesses wanting to increase their profile and sales vohume find that being a part of the Focus on
