Sporting paper seagulls and protest signs — and in one case, a rat costume — the crowd converged on the Metro East Trade Centre to meet representatives from the Interim Waste Authority, the provincial agency searching for a Durham dump site. Four of five potential sites are in Pickering. The crowd chanted, clapped, whistled, jeered and cheered, interrupting IWA speakers several times. Gary Komar of Dillon Consultants, a firm assisting the IWA in its search, was almost constantly drowned out by hecklers as he tried to describe the IWA's method of comparing sites. ' He was laughed at when he mentioned "public input" as part of the search pro- cess, and then was silenced completely as the angry crowd took to its feet, clapping and chanting "No more dumps" in a protest that lasted several minutes. MCESSARV Ma,- Bell rate hike denied DURHAM - Bell Canada's first proposed rate increase in 10 years has been denied by the Canadian Radio -television and Telecornmunications Commission, Ottawa. Under the plan, residential phone bills were to have increased by an average $1.40 April 1, while business rates were to have risen an average $3.25. But Bell is still seeking a Sept. 1 jump in rates and the subsequent implementation of toll-free telephone service from Bowmanville to Burlington, which will increase residential telephone bills by an average of $7.55 per month. The toll-free proposal is known as the Community Calling Plan. Under the CCP, residential telephone customers in Ajax will be pay- ing a total of $21.95 for service by Sept. 1, while businesses will see .their bills rise to $64.50. Those rates will also apply to customers on Pickering's 831 and 839 exchanges and on Claremont exchanges. Pickering residents on Toronto's 509 exchange will pay $19.45 per month, while businesses will be billed $58.50. He acknowledged that Pickering residents "have the feeling of being exploited in the past" and assured the IWA will hold hearings on the issue of equity. Mr. Gelot, who discussed the issues of compensation to the host municipality and govern- ment funding for groups monitor- ing the IWA, told the crowd it ,should be chanting "no more garbage" instead of "no more rdumps". He added, "One day we twill say 'this is the site', wherev- er that may be. We would not ;need to do this job if there was no garbage produced. When we stop producing garbage, we will }stop building dumps." Throughout their remarks, people bombarded them with protests such as, "We don't want it and we're not having it" and "Keep your money and keep your garbage. We don't want either one." At one point, mayor Wayne Arthurs advised the crowd, "They're aware of the hurt that's gone on in this community... The Canadian Radio -television and Telecommunications Commis- sion spared Bell Canada customers a cruel April Fool's joke when it denied Ma Bell its first rate increase in 10 years that was proposed to come into effect the first day of this month. Bell had proposed to increase residential phone bills by an average $1.40 April 1, while business rates were to have risen an average $3.25. Bell appealed to the CRTC for the rate increase, arguing that the pro- longed recession and increased competition have "considerably reduced the company's revenues". Very few companies have escaped such losses in these tough economic times. Fewer still would respond to decreased revenues by charging customers more. Most wise business owners slash their prices or offer better service to attract consumers during economic downturns. But, not Bell. It wanted to increase its charges simply because it claims it's hurting during this recession. That, even though Bell had record profits last year of $931 million and its corporate parent, BCE Inc., was the most profitable Canadian company at SIA billion. However, the CRTC intervened on behalf of those of us who want more bang for our buck. And, who doesn't? That said, we have to applaud Bell for another plan it has in the works. This time, the company's proposing to charge customers more but customers will get more too. Fonda turns professional assassin in action -packed Point Of No Return By BRUCE FROUDE Durham Staff If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That was John Badham's plan when he started filming Point Of No Return. The original version, Le Femme Nikita, was made in 1990 and Badham loved it. So much, in fact, he went right out to get his hands on this hot little French number. Le Femme Nikita received rave reviews around the world. but Badham knew North American audiences wouldn't watch this film because of the somewhat dis- tracting subtitles. Not too many people in this society want to go the extra mile reading the subti- tles while concentrating on the scenes happening before them. It's a shame, they missed a good movie. People won't want to miss Point Of No Return starring up and coming super actress Bridget Fonda. Fonda plays Maggie/Nina, a bad apple with a drug problem. Maggie kills a cop. Maggie goes to the chair. Maggie dies, or so it seems. The murderess is given a reprieve by a coven government organization and is turned into a professional assassin. Life as a high-priced killer agrees with Maggie until she falls in love with J.P. (Dermott Mul- roney). This causes the obvious angst as Maggie wants out of the blood- shed business. But there is no way out as she funds out. The story line is fantastic and it stays true to the original Le Femme Nikita. Camera angles, lighting, costume, almost every- thing is duplicated in Point Of No Return. The opening scene and the other action moments in Point Of No Return are excellent viewing. There will be theatre buffs calling this a cap -out. but it really works the second time around. Point Of No Return exceeds the original in several areas and falls short in others. The Badham pion is more obvious and deliberate in plot development, while not over- stepping the effectiveness of the subtlety needed to set up the ch - max in the movie. On this overall question, the three do, in fact, reach a measure of agreement- , the big issue fac- ing Canada is the recession," says Fred, predicting that Brian Mul- roney's failure to come throagh with jobs will figure prominently in the Upcoming election year. Kristal, while agreeing with Fred's overall assessment, dis- agrees with his criticism "I believe the PCs are commit- ted to restructuring the economy in ways that are going to create jobs," she says. "Technological changes, for example. Steps in this direction show that the government is com- mitted to long-term change." Rob Halpin, however, offers a different perspective. "I think that the key issue has to still be unity," he says. "We need a fresh government in Canada to help us get over the hump. We are still kicking our- selves about the Charlottetown Accord, but we won't be able to move on unless we're stable as one unit. This is affecting the recession with the fallen dollar." The economy, unity — is that all the country has to deal with? Kristal says no. "Job training and education relating to the technological changes going on in the country are also important. So is the envi- ronment, international relations and human rights- All politicians in the upcoming year are going to have to be extremely accountable on the issues." "We have to fix things like that before we can start to function normally.- '-'=reAI " Fred, like Kristal, agrees that bods the environment and foreign relations will play a key role. A federal campaign was in the works at the time, and Kristal became interested in the Progressive Conservative Party. It's been nearly five years, and she's still interested. "I think the thing that first attracted me to the PC party was the fact that it offered chances to everyone," says the 18 -year-old O'Neill Collegiate student. "It's uplifting and encouraging — always striving for something better, something more." Kristal began her involvement with the party campaigning door-to-door for Rene Soetens. The move to fund-raising was next, and now she sees her main objective as getting the word out into the community. At the youth level this is difficult to do," she says. adding that most students don't know what is out there for people their age. or feel that they have to wait until university to get involved. "You don't need to wait. There is a lot going on out there." Kristal and her fellow party members try to get this message across in a number of ways. Young Progressive Conservative meetings are a key, as are community events like free car washes. Flyers come in handy, too. And after watching her peers react to the referendum. Kristal hopes that the message is getting across. The first time I ever voted was in the referendum." she says. '"i'here was so much discussion among people my age about what was going on, and I think that our voices were heard in the vote. I hope the lesson that voices can be heard has been learned, and that people my age will speak out in the next election as well." Just voting. though, is not necessarily good enough. "How people vote is a major concern." says Kristal. "I think that most people, in most countries, tend to vote against p,-N)ple rather than for issues, and that :s a problem. - While adding that her ideal of people putting wide all outside influences and looking only at the candidate is perhaps Utopian. Kristal nevertheless helieves the tide may be turn- tng. "As I mentioned earlier. the referendum gave people a chance to have their voices heard. and maybe that will change some things in the future," she says. "At this point, however, I think politics is politics, and you are always going to have something clouding the issues" Despite many people's frustration and disillusionment with Canada's three -party system, Kristal still believes that the country should work with what it has. "I don't mind admitting that I am a traditionalist at heart," she says. "We can work with what we have, especially since the alternative right now (the Reform Party) is not a viable one. "I still believe that the PC party has a lot to offer this country and I would like to see Brian Mulroney run again." she continues. "I believe that he has gotten some bad press all around, and that given a fair chance, he can prove how committed he is." While Kristal is deeply concerned about Canada's fate, she is also planning to honor a more personal commitment — to her future. "I hope to attend Mount Allison University in New Brunswick for commerce. It has a great community -minded program," she says, speaking of next year's school plans. "I'd also like to see more of this country. That's important to me. Once the commerce degree is done. I'd like to work toward my law degree." But what about politics.' "I'd like to always be involved." she says. "But to me, it is important to be settled, to have a law practice. to know where 1, personally, am going. Then I can think about it." Our mistake... I1m.LER The Medial Adviser Q. I am a 62 -year-old typist In 1989, I noticed hard lumps form- ing in the palm of my left hand, and in 19901 was diagnosed with Dupuytren's contracture. My left hand cannot straighten as far as my right, but I still have full use of both hands. I have seen three doctors: One said to have surgery immediately, and two said to wait until the fingers start curling into the palm. I am scared I may lose the use of my hands. Should I be aggressive and have surgery? - Gloriana L. A: The consensus in studies is to postpone surgery for Dupuytren's contracture until a significant, fixed bend affects the fingers. Generally, surgery is tarely called for in hands without a 30 -degree bend at the knuckle joint (where the fingers meet the hand) or 25 -degree bend at the proximal interphalangeal joint (the fust forger joint up from the knuckle). New research, soon to be published, shows that 97 per cent of the hard humps, or nod- ules, treated with a series of steroid injections do not require surgaY- A disease of the hand charac- terized by permanently bent fin- gers was first described in 1831 by a French surgeon named Guil- laume Dupuytren. Dupuytren's contracture mostly affects white men over the age of 60, may be inherited and has an association with diabetes, alcohol, smoking and HIV infections. Experts couldn't provide any reliable statistics telling how common the disease is. Often the first sign of the dis- ease is the presence of nodules in the palm of the hand, which often grow in length and develop into long bands or cords from the palm to the fingers. The cause is not known, but recent work by Dr. Andrew Baird, professor of molecular and cellular growth biology at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., and his colleagues have identified cells that may control the growth of Dupuytren's contractures. Their work aims at finding a drug that may interfere with the abnormal cell growth. Until recently, surgery was thought to be the only effective treatment for the disease; patients waited and watched their nodules grow into cords that developed into contractures. But one researcher has suggest- ed an alternative. While no one recommends removing nodules surgically, Dupuytren's expert Dr. Lynn Ketchum has had success treating nodules with a series of injections containing the steroid triamcinolone. Ketchum, a professor of surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Centre in Kansas City, found that 74 out of 75 hands treated with three injections six weeks apart showed regression of nodules, and none of the nod- ules developed into a contracture. The research was reported in the November 1991 issue of the jour- nal Hand Clinics. Ketchum has continued to use the steroid treatment "Results of our new study, soon to be pub- lished, show that surgery is pre- vented in 97 per cent of all patients treated with a series of trimcinolone injections," Ketchum said in an interview. If the disease progresses and the fingers bend severely enough to require surgery, there are two forms of surgery to be considered. The Durham Regional Police basketball team was beaters by the eastern all-stars, feawring players from Oshawa schools, 49-32 in the fust High School Bas- ketball Tournament at Durham College.Y: More than 700 spectators watched the hoop clash between the cops and the high schoolers, as well as a slam dunk contest and an east -west all-star game. Several local dignitaries, including Oshawa MPP Alan Pilkey and chief of police Trevor McCagherty, were on hand to lend support to efforts to bring local students and the police closer together. The tourney was organized by cadet Jeff Haskins and Constable Terry Ryan. Several area businbesses donated prizes and sponsored events. In the east -west all-star game, the eastern all-stars nipped the western regional team, featuring high school players from the Ajax -Pickering area, by a score of 61-60 with the outcome decided in the final few seconds of play. In the slam dunk contest, Kirk Salesman, a Grade 12 student at Pickering High School, walked away a winner. It was his second consecutive win in a Slam Dunk Contest in Durham Region. Second place was claimed by Michael Hunte of Ajax High School, while Mike Piwerka of McLaughlin High School in Oshawa was third. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletic Fund and the Durham College Athletic Fund.
