Durham Regional Police uncovered more than 2,000 marijuana plants in the raid on a family -run nursery Tuesday evening. The drug squad arrested four family members at Newcastle -based Birch Valley Farms, which has as its mono "'We Only Sell Birch Trees". The elderly man's 57 -year-old wife was charged with cultivation of marijuana and possession of a nar- :.otic for the purpose of trafficking. Region grapples with Blue Box cost DURHAM - The cost of the Region's Blue Box recycling program has politicians con- cerned. The issue will be discussed in a meeting with regional chair- man Gary Herrema this summer, Ajax mayor Jim Witty told Town council Monday. "The Region will have to decide whether to expand (the Blue Box program) or take another look at it," he said. It costs Durham $250 per tonne to recycle, compared to $44 per tonne to landfill trash, mayor Witty added. People are mistaken if they believe putting out the Blue Box every second week helps the garbage crisis, he said. "Someday, hopefully it will become more cost effective." In a report to council, regional councillor Susan Dulny said Blue Box collection is a concern to many Durham officials. Regional council re -affirmed its commitment to making sure the enhanced emergency response service continues to be within reach of every Durham resident. Our Region is one of a few municipalities in North America with the enhanced 911 system. The service automatically dis- plays a caller's address on a call taker's screen, letting the police, fire department or ambulance attendants respond even if it's a three-year-old on the other end or someone else unable to explain their emergency. The commit- ment came after council- lors watched a 1 WO video of the 11 American tele- vision show, Rescue 911, which featured Francine Durham police Nicholas and ambulance attendants responding to a Bow- manville home in May of 1991 after getting a call to help a woman and a child who had been shot by her husband. Councillors heard a replay of the actual call for help made from the Bowmanville home to Durham's 911. Wednesday's meeting was attended by shooting victim Francine Nicholas, whose hus- band is serving a 12 -year prison sentence after being found guilty of attempted murder. Using a double-barrelled shot- gun, Mr. Nicholas walked into the couple's bedroom and shot his wife five times in the face and abdomen and his five-year-old daughter in the hand. The child was in bed with her mother at the time. An older child, taking direc- tions from a 911 call taker, was able to disarm his father before police arrived. The entire family is undergoing trauma coun- selling. Durham Regional Police sergeant Derek Denson told council Mrs. Nicholas often points out that she's alive today because of 911. "We have the best system in Ontario," said Sgt. Denson. He reported that Durham's 911 team gets between 12,000 and 20,000 calls a month. The $2 million needed for the start-up of 911 was money well spent, said Durham chairman Gary Herrema. "I'm very proud of this system ... I get a lot of com- plaints about snow plowing. But I've never ever received a com- plaint about 911. I'm amazed at .how well it is working." However, two years ago Durham Region did just that. Times were tough financially, but the green light was still given for the Region's 911 system. And, keeping in the true tradition of how politicians usually spend money, they went for the best, the enhanced system. This time, though, they can't be criticized for going for the best. A system where the caller's address automatically appears on the 911 call taker's screen is a system that increases the chance of saving lives. In the case of Francine Nicholas, a woman whose husband shot her and her five-year-old daughter in May of 1991, the enhanced 911 sys- tem allowed emergency crews to be dispatched to the home as the young caller was explaining the tragedy. Congratulations Durham on one of the most important purchasing decisions you have ever made. With between 12,000 and 20,000 calls a month to the 911 line, we wonder just how many people didn't get help in time before the 911 system was installed. Furthermore... Regional politicians will hash out their Blue Box concerns this summer. The issue is whether or not to expand the program which is roughly five times more expensive than putting garbage into landfill. The decision won't be easy. Either the taxpayer or the environment comes out a loser. It's a discussion that is doubtful to have a happy ending. Good luck. Letters 6 Not enough baseball diamonds for popularity of sport To the editor. Speaking on behalf of the exec- utive of the Ajax Spartans Minor Baseball Association, I thought a response was warranted to the let- ter 1n the March 10 edition titled: Plav ball — sorra, not this season. While it was unpleasantly true that there were long line-ups for the Feb. 6 registration, it is also true that there have been similar line-ups for ball registration in most of the preceding years. Granted, the numbers this year far exceeded any of our expectations, either because of sheer expansion within Ajax itself, or because of the increasing interest in the sport thanks to the World Series win by the Blue Jays. In any case, development of parks and facilities in the Town has not kept pace with the popula- tion growth and needs of the com- munity — and it can only get worse until the recession lifts and goes away like a bad dream. To their credit, the recreation depart- ment has done everything within its power to see that minor ball has been given as many permits and parks as is feasible — not an easy task with 20 other associations (Slo-Pitch, Softball, etc.) vying for diamond time. The simple reality is that our numbers keep going up while the permitted times and facilities remain basically the same. I pay taxes too, and while I am not happy with the situation, I have not gone so far as to throw my hands in the air and refuse to contribute my time and efforts in order to help find a solution. Last year we registered approxi- mately 1,200 children. This year, more than 1,700 wanted to sign up, most of them waiting in line at the community centre on that fateful Feb. 6. By 10 am. we had waiting lists in three divisions, including Mosquito (10 pages long) and if there were disappointed parents and children in line, imagine how we felt — volunteers all — firstly having to inform these parents and children of the waiting lists, then having to endure a lot of angry complaints and criticisms as to how we "should" have run the registra- tion. Mr. Sharpe seems to feel we should pre -register in the fall or early spring. Suppose — and keep in mind we must base our registra- tion on the previous year's team allotments — several divisions fill before the pre -registration is even complete? The Pee Wee division, for instance, has 14 teams, Mosquito 20. Tell me how to pre- register 284 children into 196 slots and still leave room for other eager, interested, committed sports enthu- siasts (and taxpayers) who may move into the area over the winter with a young Nigel Wilson in their fold — and you can have my job, with my blessings and thanks. No system is perfect, but whichever one we opt for has to be fair to everyone. Yes, we ended up with horrendous waiting lists totalling 512 children. We were also able to go back to the drawing board, do some fancy scheduling footwork, budget adjustments, and just plain begging for coaches, managers, and spon- sors (which we still need to make this work) and we have managed to expand by 24 teams overall and accommodate the entire original waiting list Not that we expect the people who griped and complained the loudest to thank as now. I had the privilege of driving a new Toyota Camry wagon. Now. I normally find the Toyota Camry an attractive vehicle and. I am sure. it is a pleasure to drive. But unlike its sister vehicle. the Camry wagon. well. just isn't my style. I don't have any children and probably will not for a veru long time. so the purchase of a station wagon is not in my future. Therefore. I do not find any wagon and. in this case. the Toyota Camn_• wagon impressive at all. a NJ In properly preparing for my ride and drive in this wagon. my attitude had to be altered in order to give this car a fair review. I had to do a men- tal change and begin to look at the car from a totally different angle. I had to adopt the viewpoint of the average mom with children, car pools, baseball teams and plenty of groceries to drive around. The seats are very comfortable and there is definitely a lot of room in the back seat. A feature I really found interesting was the way a third/rearmost seat hid under the floor panels and was ready to pop up on demand. The third seat has built- in three-point seat belts for that all important safety factor. I haven't been in the rear seat of a station wagon since I was probably nine years old and, back then, only the fiottt seats had belts. The rear window features not only one wiper, but two. I thought Toyota hiA outdone itself at first, but after driving on duty and wet roads, the two wipers were not only a plea - WIT to have, but very much needed. The Roadtest vehicle didn't have an ABS system installed, but to adv this feature is not a lot of money. I highly recommend any parent that is driving around valuable little people to install the system. It is well worth the investment. As for the performance of the Camry wagon, when I pressed the overdrive button on the gear shift, the revs instantly shot up 1,000 rpm. This is great when you need to get out of someone's way in a hurry or when making a pass. The Toyota Camry wagon is per- fect for city driving, little trips to the school, mall or arena. And it did offer a smooth comfortable ride on the highway. But overall, I rate this car as a 4$ oQ p tl pi 100, . Camry has Jekyll and Hyde personality By JOHN DUARTE Taking Tums at ,ttie Wheel strongly doubt that when Robert Louis Stevenson wrote about The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, he consid- ered his novel would be used to describe an automobile. This week. Stevenson's classi- cal character gets no less than two mention in Wheels Durham. Jim Robinson and I didn't get together and decide to both use Jekyll and Hyde as a way of illustrating char- acteristics of our respective Roadtest vehicles. but that is exactly what has happened. My test car this week is the Toyota Camry LE wagon. The split personality of Stevenson's character is tailor-made to describe, the 1993 Camry wagon. The Dr. Jekyll portion of the Camry roadtest was present for most of the week-long trial, while the roads were clear and drv. But a dusting of the white stuff was the potion needed for the Mr. Hyde persona to emerge from the Camry's skin. During our ride and drive. co- driver Tem MacDonald -Cadieux and I were faced with a very dif- ferent car than I experienced for the rest of the week. The Camrv's two faces are evi- dent is just about every inch of the car — from styling to perfor- mance. The design of the Camry wagon is familiar enough. The aerodynamic design is attractive enough, until you get to the rear- most window and D -pillar treat- ment. 1 don't know where Toyota designers got the inspiration for that look, but it definitely is the only drawback to an otherwise nice-loo--dng vehicle. Inside the Camry is vintage Toyota. All gauges and controls are perfectly placed within easy reach and clearly labelled for ease of understanding and operation. The Camry brings back a fea- ture I hadn't seen in a wagon in a long time — a third seat hidden under the cargo bed of the car. Lifting two panels quickly reveals seating for two (albeit small two). The bonus is that this hideaway seat comes equipped with three- point belts. This feature is conve- nient and I don't have to tell you where my five-year-old wanted to ride all week. While we are at the back of the wagon, let's mention Toyota's attention to including double wipers on the rear window. This is a feature that is greatly wel- comed. Wagon owners know how dirty the back window gets. One large wiper manages to clear a swatch of grime away to offer a view back, but still can leave a couple of dirt -created blindspots. The Camry's double wiper is most efficient. There is a small area directly behind the driver's head which the wiper misses, but it is much better than in most wagons, „ 1 I I I I. I)' 1 4. I i ': Comfort is also not a 'problem. The seats are firm and offer good support. whether on the short drive to the grocery store or on longer highway rides. Visibility is also very good. There is plenty of glass to minimize blindspots to the sides and rear. Like I said above. the Camry shows a split personality in just about every aspect, performance being where you feel it most. Most of the week I felt the Camry's road manners were impressive, with a smooth ride and decent acceleration (this is not a roadster afterall). But when it came time to take the wagon out in the snow, a different car emerged. I just didn't feel stable on snow-covered roads. The Camry's handling puzzled me a bit. It didn't handle the way a front -drive vehicle normally behaves — plowing effortlessly along through the snow. In fact. turning corners was an adventure at times. Most of the blame for this falls on the tires. The Dunlop all - season tires that come with the car just don't do the job. It would be a wise move to invest in grippier rubber all around. I'm really torn on this car. Toyota does a lot of things right and the Camry family is proof positive of that. The engine is the 4.6 -litre Northstar- with four valves per vlinder and twin overhead mshafts. The latest in computer - ed fuel injection and distributor - ss ignition technology results in 5 horsepower being available — p dramatically from the 200 hp roduced by the former 4.9 -litre it. The only transmission is a four - ed electronic unit with lock up ending power to the front wheels. ue to the excellence of the drive - rain and Cadillac's Computer ommand Ride System in con - unction with the all -independent suspension, this car does not feel like the front -driver it is. In fact, such is the caliber of the "touring suspension system" that it clearly is the most capable and competent North American luxury car (having not driven the Lincoln Mark VIII at the time of this writing) I've ever experi- enced. Along with the Infiniti J30 and the new Lexus GS300, this is the car which stands out as the ne plus ultra of current automotive design and technology as far as I'm concerned. By now, you've obviously noted I like this car — a lot. Walk up to it from any angle and it has presence. The only badging is the "STS" on each hub- cap. There's a body -color Caddy badge on the aggressive grille and that's it. Cadillac has resisted offering twinkle kits like the gold trim and lettering seen on some Lexus LS400 models which makes them look somehow uncouth. Inside, the chrome -plated plas- put on its war paint and dust off the road and constantly adjust pension includes Cadillac's n tic everything of previous use about an thin on the road I shock settin s It can res and to short/ion arm desi n at the re Cadillacs is gone, replaced by an almost too understated grey leather of the highest quality and wood inserts which I'm not certain are really wood. The six -way multi -adjustable leather chairs adjust for driver and passenger and makes looking out on those lovely STS body curves a treat. In addition to buttons on the side of the chair for lateral adjust- ments, you get a host of buttons on the centre console for lumbar adjust, etc. Also on the console is the defroster button for the optional heated windshield. It works in under a minute, turning the deep- est hoar -frost to steam right before your eyes. The back seat looks like a lounge from the Ritz Carleton Hotel in Palm Springs (maybe that's where GM got the inspira- tion), being just plain wonderful to sit in, and be seen in. Braking is anti-lock to four big discs sitting inside 16 -inch wheels. The alloy wheels themselves, as I've mentioned in the past, are particularly handsome. They do a lot to give the car a big wheel look which was one of the keys in mak- ing the classic cars of the '30s such standouts. Bi; wheels make any car look better. Big wheels on the sinuous shape of the STS make it fabulous. With 295 horses on tap and 290 torques to go with it, forward progress is impressive by any standard. It's all helped by the all- new transaxle which was specifi- cally designed with equal -length drive axles capable of dealing with the power of the Northstar. The Northstar has a Jekyll and Hyde personality. It can be driven to the supermarket where the huge trunk gobbles up bags and bags of groceries.
