recent band and drill competi-
tion at HMCS York, Toronto.

ing Navy League branch, the
local sea cadets ranging in age
from 12 to 18 bested corps from
Oshawa, Whitby and Scarbor-
ough. As a result, the 16 -mem-
ber band and the 13 -member
drill team have earned a trip to
the provincial competition at
Ipperwash near London on the
May 21 to 24 long weekend.
They'll be competing against
corps from throughout southern
Ontario. And, the band is liable
to sound even better by then
after the Navy League presents
all new instruments later this
month.

S50 million in street repairs needed
PICKERING - The Town needs $50 mil-
lion in road work, consultants say.
The figure is contained in the latest update
of a Roads Needs Study, prepared annually so
the Town will be eligible for subsidies from
the provincial ministry of transportation.

ually assaulting a female patient has been sentenced
to 18 months in prison.
In handing down his sentence to Dr. Brian
Nagahara, Mr. Justice William Lane sent a clear
message to both patients and doctors.
"The public must be assured the trust they place
in their doctors will not be misplaced," he said Fri-
day at the doctor's sentencing hearing in Whitby.
As well, the punishment encourages other doc-
tors to "think twice before acting iroppropriately,"
Mr. Justice Lane said.
After his release from jail, Dr. Nagahara will
serve a probation of three years, in which he's pro-
hibited from contacting the victim and must seek
rehabilitation. If he practises medicine during that
period, he must have another adult present when
conducting breast and pelvic examinations.
(Dr. Nagahara faces the loss of his licence to
practise medicine when he goes before the Ontario
College of Physicians and Surgeons.)
Dr. Nagahara was a general practitioner at South
Ajax Family Doctors on W estney Rd. when he was
charged with sexually assaulting a woman in her
early 30s who visited the walk-in clinic in June
1991 for an employment medical which included
breast and pelvic examinations.
The victim told the jury the breast examination
was normal until Dr. Nagahara squeezed and
caressed her in a way she believed had no medical
purpose. The pelvic examination was also normal
until the doctor tried to atom her.
According to the woman, he asked her what her
bra size was, whether she had a boyfiriend and if
she wanted a boyfriend. The examination ended
when she got up, started to get dressed and ordered
him to leave the room.

29 at the time of his arrest Jane 28, 1991, hasn't
practised medicine since Nov. 1991 becaase of the

PICKERING - The frequency
of chemical spills at a local truck-
ing terminal has officials dis-
turbed, says Pickering fire chief
Steve Stewart.
At least three spills have
occurred recently at CP Trucks
on McKay Rd., the latest on
Thursday when a container of
sealant preservative toppled over
inside a tractor trailer.
Although that spill was con-
sidered minor and non -hazardous,
it came just two weeks after
spilled furniture lacquer posed a
fire threat at the terminal. That
incident, on Feb. 23, prompted
evacuation of the building and
the hiring of a specialized clean-
up crew from Hamilton. Nor was
that the first time employees were
evacuated because of spills.
"We're getting concerned
about it," says chief Stewart,
adding that CP may be asked to
hire an expert on WHMIS (Work-
place Hazardous Materials Infor-
mation System).
But CP terminal manager
Roman Slugocki says no one has
suggested that to the company.
"Absolutely not."
He blames two of three spills
at the terminal on "faulty contain-
ers". Of the thousands of ship-
ments handled at the Pickering
site, about 15 per cent fall under
regulations pertaining to "danger-
ous goods", he says. The compa-
ny is required to notify authori-
ties of spills of hazardous materi-
als.

try Decorating and Collectibles Show and Sale.

The Durham Board of Educa-
tion is offering three levels of
study: Basic I, Basic II and Inter-
mediate. The first level lasts six
months and the other two last
three months.
Each class is offered Monday
through Friday from 9:15 am. to
2:45 p.m. beginning in early April
at the board's Durham Alternative

There are 15 openings per class

Mr. Van Kempen says the consultants' figures represent the
'.absolute Utopia" in road repairs. "We won't do a lot of that

Politicians begin
to act responsibly
It's become all too apparent this past week that we've been bilked and
over -billed for far too long.
It was Durham Board of Education trustees and Ontario Hydro's head hon-
cho who, by their actions on consecutive days, tipped us off that we've been
ripped off by the very service providers they run.
Their moves to save taxpayers a bundle of money could easily have been
cheered But, when one looks beyond the surface and reads between the lines,
they deserve to be jeered.
Durham board trustees Monday suggested transportation of public high
school students no longer be funded by ratepayers but by the pupils or, more
likely, their parents in communities where public transit exists — Ajax, Whit-
by and Oshawa. If trustees go ahead with the plan when they finalize the
board budget, it would save taxpayers 5425,000 a year. Great news.
But, hold the applause. Why wasn't this move made years ago? Board
finance committee chair and Pickering trustee Ruth Ann Schedlich admitted
the board doesn't have to pay for transportation, but its chosen to do so in the
past. In other words, those of us who aren't users of the board transit service --
i.e. people without children who are bused to public high schools -- have been
rices instead. Thinking taxpayers' blood should boil.
Then, on Tuesday, Hydro chairman Maurice Strong announced a major
restructuring of the utility that could effectively freeze your electricity bills for
several years to come. Good news for just about everybody, except the 3.300
local Ontario Hydro employees who make their livelihood at the Pickering
Nuclear Generating Station or the utility's eastern nuclear services office in
Ajax. Its tragic that marry area residents will be thrown out of work.
But, what's equally troublesome about the pending layoff of 4,500 of
Ontario Hydro's 28,000 employees is Mr. Strong's admission — if you read
between the lines — that the utility can do without one of every six workers
now on its payroll. It begs a question: For how long have those jobs been
redundant, for how many years has the taxpaying public been ripped ofP
It may be the only good thing to come out of tough economic time: politi-
cians and blaeaucw acting responsibly and admitting that in the past, they
haven't been seming us as responsibly as they should have.

Drivers' attitudes unbelievable
When did Highway Traffic Act change?
To the editor,
My wife and I moved to this
town about 10 years ago. One of
the reasons was to get away from
the rat race of the city. This town
used to belong to the police and
good neighborly people. Boy has it
changed, especially the attitude of
the drivers on the road.
When did the Highway Traffic
Act (HTA) change? If the speed
limit is posted at 40, 50 or 60 km
.and you drive accordingly, look
out, you are taking your life in your
hands. Stop signs, ha! That's a
laugh. Most of the time they mean
nothing. Stop means stop, not slow
down and keep going. Right tum
on a red light means stop and when
the way is clear proceed.
It seems our new HTA has
changed all this. You now come to
the corner (without signaling), cut
oncoming traffic off and proceed
with your turn because you have
the right.
Also, making a left turn from a
green light must have been
changed. You don't need to signal
or pull out half way and proceed
when the way is clear, you do one
of two things -- either sit behind

First let's get the record
straight. No I don't have kids in
the system. But I sure as hell
have a big chunk of my taxes
going to keeping the thing
afloat.
It's my humble opinion that
the tapes be made available to
those parents who choose to take
a few quiet moments with their
children to sit down and watch
and discuss, to the extent to
which they're comfortable.
I may be wrong but I think
there should still be some
responsibilities associated with
being a parent.

like hell on a green light and try to
beat the oncoming traffic.
Speaking of signals, it's my
understanding all motor vehicles
are equipped with these devices. I
always thought signals were
important to let other drivers and
pedestrians know what you're
going to do.
My real beef is speeding. I
shake my head when someone
passes me because I drive too
slow. I do the limit as posted, but I
drive too slow for these people.
With all the hand gestures and
mouthing I get from other drivers
that pass me, I guess I must be
wrong. Another HTA change I was
not aware of. From what I can
gather I drive like an old man, I
obey the HTA accordingly and put
safety first.
It is my feeling that if Ajax is
going to be a safe place to drive
again maybe some or all of these
infractions should be enforced.

To the editor,
Please print this letter as we
cannot thank our local firefighters,
police, and ambulance attendants
enough and to remind them of
how valuable they are to our com-
muruties.
I would just like to take a
moment to thank our local
Ajax/Pickering firefighters and
police. I was in a minor car acci-
dent on Feb. 16 (one of our many
snowy nights this year). I very
unwisely stood between the two
cars after the accident had
occurred and was subsequently
reared ended while standing
between the cars. My legs were
"inched" between the two cars.
In what was a short time con-
sidering the weather conditions
and other calls that must have
been pouring in the "911 team"
arrived. Although my injuries
were not, as they say, "life threat-
ening", the situation was treated
with care and compassion.
I an fine, no broken bones, just
a lot of bruises and very fortunate
to have my legs and I just want 10
say again, thank you to all those
services who respond to 911,
yours are not easy jobs and I com-
mend you on "jobs well done."

AJAX-PICKERING - A two-
year search for her birth sister
has led a Cobourg woman to the
Ajax -Pickering area.
Nancy Bruce believes her sis-
ter, born Diane Rosely Duetta on
Jan. 12, 1967, was adopted by a
family here 21 years ago. Diane
would now be 26.
"I'd like to meet her; I don't
have a sister right now," says
Mrs. Bruce, 24, who was adopted
herself at the age of two. "I just
want to meet her and see how she
is and see if she got as good a
family as I did... Unless you're
adopted, it's hard to explain. It's
kind of an empty feeling."
Mrs. Bruce discovered she had
a sister after tracking down her
birth mother for medical reasons.
The two girls, born in Picton,
were the youngest of six children
in the family. The other four chil-
dren, who stayed with their
mother, are half -siblings to Mrs.
Bruce and Diane.
Mrs. Bruce, born Violet
Louise Duetta in 1968, was
adopted by Frank and Margaret
Gladden of Cobourg and grew up
with a brother.
Information Mrs. Bruce has
uncovered indicates Diane, who
might also have been given a
new name, was adopted in Ajax
or Pickering on Dec. 22, 1972.
There's a possibility the family is
named Reid; Mrs. Bruce has
learned through an adoption
worker that they lived in a bunga-
low on a large treed and fenced
lot which overlooked a ravine.
Diane's adoptive mother, 32 at
the time of the adoption, was
born in Scotland and taught Scot-
tish dancing to public school chil-
dren. She had worked as a secre-
tary but believed a mother's place
was in the home while the chil-
dren were young; she had two
sons and enjoyed decorating,
painting, sewing, knitting and
reading.
The adoptive father was 38
when Diane was placed in the
home and was also born in Scot-
land. lie was employed as a sys-
tems analyst with a large oil firm
and was a "family man" who
coached hockey and played

drums in a Scottish pipe band.
The maternal grandmother lived
with the family and worked for a
toy company.
The Gladdens and Mrs. Bruce
made a trip to Ajax -Pickering
Tuesday, where they visited two
local schools and sifted through
old yearbooks, looking for a
Diane Reid or someone who
resembles a childhood photo-
graph of Diane that Mrs. Bruce
found in a Belleville newspaper.
"Nancy wants to know this girl
is all right," says Mr. Gladden.
Adds his wife, "It would finish
the family unit. Nancy doesn't
have a sister."
However, Mrs. Bruce assures
she doesn't want to cause Diane
"any hardships." Should her sister
not want to meet her, "There's

DURHAM - When a Durham school began a
daily physical education program in September
1991, there were some doubts about how it would
work.
But the pilot project for the Region's separate ele-
mentary schools did have a lot of support from par-
ents and teachers.
Now, the second year into program, the doubts
have disappeared, says Colin Edgecomb, principal of
St. Matthew's Elementary School in Whitby.
"The kids are really into it. They think it's fabu-
lous. It's definitely helped with classroom discipline.
They're more eager to get into their studies, they feel
better about themselves and the adrenaline is flow-
ing."
The concept, officially called Quality Daily Phys-
ical Education (QDPE), is being promoted nationally
and at the provincial level by health and physical
education organizations.
QDPE can be traced back to France in the 1950s,
where a study was conducted into the practicality of
a daily phys-cd program.
The study showed children
spending more time in physical
education had better health, were
less susceptible to stress, matured
more quickly, were more inde-
pendent, played better with ott-
ers and were less aggressive.
One of the more important
findings was that they also per- t
formed better academically.
Here in Durham. QDPE has a
definite advocate in Mary Jane
Flynn, physical and health educa-
tion consultant for the Durham
Region Roman Catholic Separate
School Board. She says it makes
a lot of sense.
"Kids are a lot less fit than
they used to be. Studies show
that they are spending 30 hours a
week in front of the TV and
another 30 hours sitting around
in a classroom. -
So much inactivity, she says,
can lead to life-long habits that
can be bad for their health.
"Parents are calling for the
basics like reading, writing and
arithmetic. But 1 don't think
they're seeing the whole pic-
ture," says Miss Flynn. -Sure
their kids may grow up to be
good readers but how long are
they going to live? -
Miss Flynn would like to see
QDPE at all elementary schools.
But she says there are some bar-
riers that have to be overcome.
She reports there isn't much
opposition to the idea itself, but
there are some questions about
how to implement it when school
boards are having less and less
money to spend. Gymnasium
time can be at a premium, and
school trips to community sports
facilities can be expensive.
And there are other doubts. {
"Parents, trustees and principals ask, `The cur-
riculum is already crowded, how can we fit more
in?"' says Miss Flynn. As well, there are questions
about facilities.
That's one of the reasons a QDPE committee has
been formed, to look for ways around some of those
barriers. The committee, which reports to the
Catholic school board, is looking for innovative
ways to implement the program, and without spend-
ing a lot of money.
Alternatives can be found to expensive trips to
community facilities, such as holding activities in the
classroom itself.
As for the crowded curriculum, Miss Flynn says
there are ways to blend subject areas, such as altering
a French exercise to include some form of physical
activity.
In any case the idea is to keep the program enjoy-
able and to veer away from more competitive sports
such as soccer and basketball.
"The whole focus is fitness and fun," says Miss
Flynn. "We want to expose them to a wide variety of
activities and hopefully turn them into lifetime pur-

Superb acting gives Mad Dog delightful bite

verybody loves a wimp.
Who wouldn't? Whether
you love or take pity on a
wimp, the loser always makes you
feel something. And you can't
help but be enamored with Robert
De Niro in Mad Dog and Glory.
De Niro, that collector of
Academy Awards, plays super
nerd Wayne 'Mad Dog' Dobie.
This character is a cop, but not
your ordinary cop. He never sees
action, real front line action, as a
police photographer. He gets there
after the guns have long since
been put away. The closest he
comes to the action is his televi-
sion set. Which is fine by him, we
might add.
This mild-mannered guy has
his life turned around when he
saves hoodlum Frank Milo (played
by Bill Murray) during a variety
store holdup.
The generous big shot decides
he has to repay Mad Dog and
gives him Glory (Uma Thurman)
to be his friend for a week.
Mad Dog needs friends, a girl-
friend to be exact, and Glory is the
ideal friend. Even if it's only for a
week. And even if she's an
unwanted gift. But our nerd isn't
dumb.
The pair hit it off so weli they
become lovers, much to Mad
Dog's surprise. Ours too.
The love scenes in this movie
arc two of the funniest in movie
making history. Sharon Stone and
Michael Douglas have more
instinct than this pair.
And instincts tell you Bill Mur-
ray will be his usual funny self.
He's not.
Murray has taken a complete
departure from his other roles
(granted, he did play a serious role
in Razor's Edge, but nobody

He does it with the ease he
plays comic roles. This friendly
loan shark is more than willing to
give you the shirt off his back, but
the pay back is all your clothes as
Glory discovered when her brother
borrowed money and couldn't pay
it back.
The three main characters are
all believable, likeable people, but
their potential is never really met.
The scenes between De Niro and
Thurman are good; the bits with
De Niro and Murray are terrific,
especially when De Niro's charac-
ter sees Murray for what he really
is; but somewhere from writer
Richard Price's desk to the movie
set the magic expected of Thur-
man and De Niro goes missing.
These two, supposedly deeply
in love characters lack spark for
each other. We never know if
Glory likes this nerd because she
brings his town back to prosperity
and turns his once -bitter marriage
into a passionate romance. Despite

AJAX - The owner of the Ajax Axemen Central Ontario
Junior 'A' Hockey team has no plans to move the club to a
new eastern league being proposed by Ontario Hockey Asso-
ciation officials.

However, Axemen owner Larry
LaBelle made it plain prior to the
meeting he has no intention of jump-
ing into the loop, but intends to stay in
the eastern division of the Central
Ontario league.
"Frankly, I wouldn't be interested
in that," says LaBelle. "Every one of
those trips is a bus trip for us. Right
now, we drive (by car) to Newmarket
and Markham. We have large enough
travel costs already."
LaBelle notes the Axemen have
competed in two different leagues and
three different divisions in the past

Ajax soccer Walrriors best older teams
to reach Scarborough toumament final
AJAX - The Ajax Warriors tinder -10 select indoor soccer team made
it to the championship game at the Scarborough Invitational Soccer
Tournament Manch 6 and 7.
The Warriors squad — in its first year together and made up mostly of
eight -year-olds — played valiantly to make it to the final of the 12 -team
tourney against Woodstock. However, they lost by a goal in the show-
down.
Scoring for Ajax during the tournament were Lawrence Swailes with
four goals, Colin Vickers with three and Daniel Kunz, Joshua Tataren
with one goal apiece. Other team members who gave it their all were
Corey Sevier, Ryan Ross, JD Murphy, David Hunchak, Devon Yacoob
and goalie Christopher Rigby.
The team thanks JD Murphy who substituted for an ill Jonathan Ste-
fan one hour prior to the tournament.
The squad is coached by Jean Rigby.

"When we got into Junior 'B' we wanted to play against
towns that people recognize, like Markham and Newmarket.
They want to see the Markham Waxers and the Barrie Colts,"
he says.
"Not only that, I don't think it's a responsible move. How
can you build a solid franchise when you jump to your fourth
league in four years?"
Moreover, LaBelle says OHA officials will need a con-
vincing argument to get him to change his mind on the matter.
"They would have to do a lot of persuading to make me
consider that option. Right now, I'm not considering any
move," he says.

Mart peewee select hockey team brought home
another championship trophy, this
time from the recent Agincourt
Canadians' Tournament.
The championship game pitted
Ajax against Markham — two teams
which were undefeated enter-
ing the final. In an exciting
game, Ajax thoroughly dominat-
ed play, winning 7-2. MiNora r
Ajax started the tourney against
the host Agincourt Canadians. The Canadians
were no match for Ajax with the North Westney
Mini -Mart selects claiming a 13-0 victory.
The Ajacians then met the Scarborough Sabres
in the second contest and thrashed the Sabres by a
16-; count.
In the third game, Ajax gained entrance to the
final by clobbering previously undefeated Cedar
Hill 7-1.
The Ajax squad scored a total of 43 goals for

• A mechanical engineering degree or equivalent
experience
• Knowledge of hydraulic press application
• Experience with computer controlled equipment
• Knowledge of tools, moulds and dies
• The ability to read blueprints
• A familiarity with the automotive industry would
he helpful

Overmedication biggest problem with thryroid therapy

Q: Over 21 years ago I had
trouble getting pregnant and was
told to take desiccated thyroid.
When I recently refilled my pre-
scription for 2.5 grains of the"
drug per day, I must have
received a bad batch; I became
very tired and felt sick. When I
saw an endocrinologist, she told
me I was grossly overmedicated
and that it was mandatory I
switch to a synthetic thyroid hor-
mone. Was I put on thyroid medi-
cation for the right reasons?
Should anyone take desiccated
thyroid? Can I get off thyroid
medication completely?
A: According to the majority
of studies and medical experts, a
synthetic thyroid hormone is now
preferred over desiccated thyroid,
which is an old-fashioned remedy
prepared from animal glands.
The most common reason thy-
roid medication is prescribed is to
treat low thyroid function. It is
also prescribed in cases of thyroid
nodules, thyroid cancer or a goi-
ter, which is an enlarged thyroid.
Experts say there aren't any other
good reasons to take the drug.
The thyroid gland, located in
the neck, produces a hormone that
regulates growth and metabolism
- the speed and temperature of
cellular reactions. In some people,
the gland produces too little hor-
mone, a condition called hypothy-
roidism, or produces too much, a
condition called hyperthyroidism.
Mild hypothyroidism may be
present in a young person without
symptoms, but it tends to progress
over the years, requiring a physi-
cian's attention and medication.
Hypothyroidism is particularly
prevalent in the elderly; studies
have shown that 6 to 10 per cent
of women age 65 and over have
some degree of hypothyroidism,
and 1 to 4 per cent of men.
Symptoms of moderate to
severe hypothyroidism are many
and can include weakness;
fatigue; lethargy; cold intoler-
ance; decreased memory; hearing
impairment; constipation; muscle
cramps; dry, coarse skin, modest
weight gain even when calorie
intake is low; decreased sweating;
heavy or extended body and scalp
hair; and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism
can include weight loss, bulging
eyes, tremors, rapid heartbeat,
muscle weakness and unusually
rapid bone loss, which can lead to
osteoporosis.
If abnormal thyroid function is
suspected, a specialist known as
an endocrinologist should be con-
sulted and will probably order
blood tests.
The thyroid normally produces
a hormone called thyroxin, also
known as T4. Forty per cent of
thyroxin changes in the body to
an active hormone called tri-
iodothyronine, or T3.
To confirm a diagnosis of
hypothyroidism, T4 levels are
measured, as are levels of another
relevant hormone, called thyroid
stimulating hormone, or TSH.
If thyroid function is too high,
treatments vary. If it is too low,
the endocrinologist will usually
prescribe a thyroxin replacement.
This therapy has undergone
profound changes. From the
1940s until about 1970, this
replacement would have been
desiccated thyroid, a preparation
comprised mostly of ground -up
pig and cow thyroid glands.
However, it is difficult to mon-
itor patients on desiccated thy-
roid. What's more, studies show
that the potency of T4 and T3 in
desiccated thyroid may vary from
manufacturer to manufacturer and
even from batch to batch.
The solution, experts say, is to
take a synthetic thyroxin called
levothyroxin, which is sold under
several brand names.
"Many generations of physi-
cians grew up giving desiccated
thyroid. They are now gradually
being replaced with physicians
giving thyroxin preparations,"
said Dr. Reed Larsen in an inter-
view. Larsen is professor of
medicine at Harvard Medical
School, chief of the thyroid
department at Brigham and

"There is absolutely no reason
any longer for anyone to take des-
iccated thyroid," said Dr. David
Cooper, academic director of the
endocrinology division of Sinai
Hospital of Baltimore, in an inter-
view.
Both experts said switching
from desiccated thyroid to syn-
thetic thyroxin is simple and
should pose no problems. But the
change must be done under a doc-
tor's supervision.
Patients already taking thyroid
medication may want to have
their doctor review whether it's
necessary. A study of the use of
thyroid hormone in 2,575 adults
over 65 showed that only 81 per
cent of women and 71 per cent of
men were taking thyroid hormone
for appropriate reasons. That
study, by Dr. Clark Sawin, pro-
fessor of medicine at Tufts Uni-
versity School of Medicine in
Boston, was published in the May
1992 issue of the Journal of the
American Medical Association.
Even when thyroid medication
is appropriate, it's important to
have it monitored.
"Overmedication is one of the
biggest problems with thyroid
therapy," Larsen said.
