Cindy Osmond, a Grade 9 stu- dent from Oshawa, questioned Durham Board of Education trustees Monday on the use of an information pamphlet on con- doms offered students in contra- ception displays at science and health fairs. She said she found the pamphlet offensive. 5 "It shows male genitalia with a condom on ... and I think it's really rude," said Miss Osmond. "These pamphlets are being given to (Grade) 7s and 8s and i think they should be taught absti- nence too." Carol Switzer, who has two children in high school, also has concerns about the contraceptive displays being put on by the pub- lic health department, concluding that "public health nurses should be cautioned not to promote their own agenda because it can be dangerous." Mrs. Switzer's daughter Cheryl, a Grade 12 student. was also present at the meeting and asked about an abstinence pro- gram. Questions were also raised by speakers as to whether a certain percentage of time could be set aside to teach students about abstinence. Proceeds from the sale, handed over to the Fairport Beach Ratepay- ers' Association, must be used for "public and community services" within the neighborhood, the authority has stipulated. The property, approximately five acres, extends from West Shore Blvd. on the east to Petticoat Creek on the west. It will be kept as pas- sive open space by the authority. The ratepayers' association had owned it since 1950. The association has no specific plans yet on how to spend the money, says association president Paul White. He says strict guide- lines will be established and trustees will determine if spending proposals meet those guidelines. The association must satisfy the MTRCA that the funds are used for the community, says Don Prince, MTRCA manager of property and administrative services. "We would be thrilled if it was used for the regeneration of the waterfront area But Pickering councillor Kip Van Kempen, the Town's represen- tative on the MTRCA, suggests council might become involved. One suggestion being tossed around is that the money be given to the Town, he says. "The Town would put it back into the property. I'm not trying to take it from the ratepay- ers ... I wouldn't just say, write a cheque out to the Town." The Town could oversee the installation of plantings and walk- ways in the area, he suggests. "I'd like to hear all the input. I would love having some input; I have some ideas that would be great down there." Mr. Prince hopes the Town will be "pleased" with whatever the funds are used for, but "It is (the ratepayers' association) right to decide." as,s_ass,sssats,s's,e,tatzitti ■=r Matic r r r r t r FV DELIVERY SERVICE WATCH FOR THESE INSERTS b FLYERS COWNG TO YOUR DOOR WITH YOUR NEWS ADVERTISER CARRIER TODAY AND IN THE DAYS AHEAD SUN., FEB. nM NEWS ADVERTISER (AJAXIPICK ) 'ALP (PICK) -CANADIAN TIRE (PICK) CFERNEY'S (AJAX/PICK.) Then, on Thursday, GM revealed it's considering adding a third shift to its Oshawa truck assembly plant that would create another 600 to 800 jobs. GM spokesman Greg Pierce said the proposal to bring in a third shift at the truck plant is c6 FREE ' Balloons "Coffee & Caked being prompted by "the pretty strong demand" for full-size pick- ups and extended cabs in both Canada and the United States. Truck plant deliveries for the model year, he said, are up 10 per cent in the United States and 25 per cent in Canada. The proposal also fits in with the company's drive towards increased efficiency, he said. He cautioned, however, that the proposal to run an assembly plant 24 hours a day is "a rela- tively unique concept, certainly from the GM standpoint", and that certain issues still need to be resolved, such as how mainte- nance is to be carried out. "We've got to take it to the CAW (Canadian Auto Workers, Local 222, which represents assembly plant workers)." The union, hit with more than 2,000 layoffs in recent weeks, however, doesn't foresee a prob- lem. Union vice-president Jim Nimigon said the "biggest stum- bling block" has centred on the maintenance of the line. But he said the union's skilled trade rep- resentative, Pat Blackwood, has assured the company that "we're capable of doing it." "There's not too much doubt. According to Durham Region- al Police, a westbound pick-up truck went through a red light, striking a van exiting the GO sta- tion and then hitting an eastbound Pickering Transit bus head-on. The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m., tying up rush-hour traffic. The driver of the pick-up truck was taken to the Ajax and Picker- ing General Hospital with minor injuries. Police say a blood sample was taken from the driver at the hos- pital and sent to the Centre for Forensic Sciences for analysis. Results usually take six weeks, but the centre is busy with work dealing from Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy murder investiga- tions, police say. A Pickering Transit bus driver suffered whiplash and shock in the collision, while the van driver was uninjured. The pick-up truck was demol- ished, while the van had S1.500 in damage. The impact knocked the bus's front end into the curb and caused S10,000 in damage, says Transit inspector Gary Cole. The bus was not carrying any passen- gers. Mr. Cole says a regular transit passenger who was waiting to board the bus rushed to the driv- er's aid. Two other transit buses travelling behind the first also stopped to help. The driver, a town employee for six years, was treated at hos- pital and released. "We feel she should be just fine," says transit director George Papik. Police say a 30 -year old Pick- ering man faces several charges, including going through a red light. Now, it's our turn to be there for the Red Cross. March is Red Cross month, a time when we can give thought to the won- derful services the agency provides and a time when we can give the agency a shot in the arm. We've all been touched by the Red Cross in one way or another. Many of us have learned how to save our own life and the life of others thanks to the agency's water safety and fust aid courses. Most of us know someone who's used the Red Cross sickroom equipment loan service. Imagine what it would cost to buy a wheelchair for someone temporarily disabled, if the Red Cross didn't provide the loan service. We all know at least one senior citizen who relics on the \teals on Wheels program for hearty, hot dinners. For some elderly people. that service alone is what enables them to continue living in their own homes and stay out of institutions for the aged. Who among us doesn't have a loved one who's needed a blood transfusion and has been given the gift of life thanks to the work of the Red Cross and the generosity of the people who regularly show up at blood donor clinics' And, when there's a naulral disaster or other calamity somewhere in the world, the Red Cross is always there to help and heal the hungry and the hurting. NEVER MI- DID FIT IN - Letters Children's environmental knowledge is encouraging To the editor, Canadians generate more garbage per day than any other country — 1.7 kg. per day. This exceeds the capacity of most municipalities to re -use, recycle, incinerate, or put into landfills. Landfills are a $I billion a year industry, and until 1986 were not monitored. Landfills are also a major contributor to the pollution of our ground water supply. The ground water is what fills the rivers and streams, which then flow into Lake Ontario and the Great Lakes. There are about 1,200 landfill sites in Ontario. Few meet provin- cial legislation standards for prop- er engineering. L,andfitl sites pro- duce toxic chemicals known as leachate. If proper measures are not taken these chemicals flow down into the ground water, below the subsurface. Unforturimly, liners in landfill sites, are new discoveries so we are unsure what affect climate changes and time will have on them. Leakage exists long after the fife of a droop site. Who will pay for the cleanup? The Ontario Ministry of the Environment does not require the halt of pollution into our ground water or any water system. They require that the pollution be brought to a level that seems allowable. Currentiv Brock West Landfill site is owned and operated by -Metropolitan Toronto, who, according to its 1989 operation report, made S120 million profit on the landfill after operating costs. In 1987 they were aware of leakage at Brock West — today they admit to around 150 gallons a minute leakage. We are now in February 1993. Metro will attempt to install dry pits in spring 1993. As well, Metro has exceeded the design contours by 1.74 mil= lion cu -yards as of July 1991 sur- vey, worth approximately $200 million. Their response to this was that it will shrink to design contours over time — perhaps it will in 50-70 years. However the contract states quite specifically the contours and capping (4 -inch clay) should not be exceeded without Pickering approval. Brock West has been and contin- ues to be badly managed by Metropolitan Toronto who reap all of the profit. Catego- rizing this treatment as unfair; the role of the environmental groups is to provide a "vision of hope and greater self-sufficiency". For this reason serious envi- ronmental initiatives will only result from the local or grassroots levels; political leaders will only move when the public knows what they want. Politicians will then scramble to get on board. I am very encouraged by our chil- dren, who are better educated on the environment issues. They will force the politicians to be more accountable and perhaps one day will be in office themselves. I hope it will not be too late. Pine Ridge School recently handed 500 petitions to us in ref- erence to no more landfills in Pickering. God bless them and I hope nobody ever discourages them from their "vision": Yes, there are solutions to this waste problem but while Metro controls you can be assured it will not be in the best interests of our chil- dren. Last year a special AI cam- paign focused attention on the abuses suffered for 500 years by Indigenous Peoples in the Americas. Sadly, abuses against native populations continue today — not only in the Americ- as but around the world. News reports document such cases daily. If this situation is to change, declarations are not enough. Offending governments must take practical steps to end the abuses. Such steps might include: investigating all reports of human rights violations against Indigenous Peoples and bringing those responsible to justice; ensuring that all detainees are brought promptly before a judge, and given access to lawyers; instructing the secu- rity forces that basic human rights must be protected under all circumstances; making human rights material available in Indigenous languages: and, consulting the Indigenous Peo- ples themselves about matters affecting their protected rights. The U.N. has established standards to protect the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of Indigenous Peoples everywhere. It is to be hoped that 1993 will see these standards effectively imple- mented. Such action is long overdue. TIft NETS ADvIMM si)P"T,1URVA" x y t etters l -Safe sex' grseaterncil 0 Premature sexual activity inappropriate To the editor, Re: Jan. 31, 1993 — AIDS fight needs open minds/Group fights `hate war' against gays. Some young teens at the Grade 7 and 8 level choose to embrace a sexually active lifestyle and `abstinence only,' a reasonable and responsible standard for sexu- al behavior in young teens, is demoted to a valid option. It appears that some 'concerned par- ents' have chosen to evaluate the standard as inappropriate rather than evaluating the 12 or 13 -year old's premature sexual activity as inappropriate. So, on one hand, the tremen- dous health risks associated with smoking or drinking and drugs are emphasized. But, on the other hand, the gigantic health risks involved in promiscuous sex (homosexual or heterosexual) are down -played by demands for `progressive sexual education.' And by a Durham Board of Edu- cation trustee. Well, no thank you. Moreover, in striving to justify sexual choic- es such as bisexualism, certain individuals on the board evidently feel that any target market is fair game to sell their philosophy: and it appears that some have even come to the conclusion that they have a right to tamper with the lives of my children — and in the name of education. Once again, no thank you. Just as various groups or individuals have con- sciously decided to consider any and all sexual behavior, at what- ever age, absolutely normal as long as a condom is used, I have consciously decided otherwise. Just leave my kids alone. Please! Sex education is valid, espe- cially in its application to anato- my, biology, physical change and reproduction. But, I will not accept it in conjunction with a value system that implies or gives approval for young and vulnera- ble and easily persuaded adoles- cents to consider intimacy in early teens as normal or accept- able behavior. The old cop-out, "They're going to do it anyway", should not be ornamented on a white sur- render flag. Giving into that kind of fatalism is just too dangerous. Although most kids at 12 and 13 years of age can't manage to get a towel on to a towel rack, some appear to have presumed that they will get a condom on to a penis. And then, once the condom is on, magically, these young people can feel protected in whatever sexual behavior they choose because they are practising 'safe' sex. Nonsense. But automotive specialists at General Motors say that isn't so. A vehicle has the least traction on 'wet ice". This road condition occurs when the temperature hovers around the freezing mark and rain begins to fall. The main danger of this road condition is that it looks like rain, but there is a very slippery glaze on road surfaces. Regardless of weather conditions - snow or ice - winter driving requires extra caution. Reducing your speed and driving as smoothly as possible - not weaving in and around traffic - is recommended. Sudden acceleration causes your tires to spin on slick roads and should be avoided. Hard braking ,- ---. THE NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY, FEBRUARY A 1904MAGR 11 P ing silence Thistle Ha'enjoys a rich and remember By HENRY M. GAWMAN Heritage Pickering PICKERING - One of the best - loved poems by Robert Burns is The Cotter's Saturday Night. In the poem he describes the simple plea- sures of a poor Scottish farmer. A cotter or crofter of the 18th century worked a small piece of land for an absentee landlord. From just such a background John Miller came to Canada at the age of 18, in 1835 from Annan in Dunfries, Scotland. After a few years of hard work in Markham, he became owner of 100 acres of uncleared land and 100 acres of partially -cleared land at the northeast corner of Conces- sion 7 and Brock Rd. in Pickering. Here the fieldstone farmhouse known as Thistle Ha' as built in 1855. It is difficult now to visualize the land as it was then. The present owner — Hugh J. Miller — describes maple trees four feet through and birch which had to be cleared before the land could be turned by the plow. And in the soil were stones weighing tons, which had to be removed. Most of the trees went up in smoke. Some of the stone was used to build Thistle Ha'. According to Mr. Miller, the highest paid worker was the stone mason at $1.25 for a 10 -hour day. Other prices, of course, were com- parable. Whiskey was 25 cents a gallon, retail. A huge turkey could be bought for a dollar. The cleared land sold for $16 an acre, uncleared for $8. The land was purchased by John Miller from the Barclay family, who thought it best to leave the country, because of their sympathy to the cause of William Lyon Mackenzie in the failed rebellion of 1837. John Miller had 11 children by two wives. Pioneer life was not easy for women. "The more chil- dren the better" was the motto in those days. The clearing and the working of the land could absorb the energies of any number or sib- lings. A plaque erected by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada on the north side of Con- cession 7 describes how John Miller, by importing quality cattle, sheep and horses, was instrumental in improving stock -breeding throughout North and South Amer- ica. One can imag- ine the solemn deliberations made there, as well as the festivities com- mon to a growing family. The years between 1855 and 1993 number 138. If we compare the hopes and fears, the tragedies and love in our own brief lives, what must the residents of the ancestral home have known? The spirit of Robbie Burns may have presided over many a merry evening. The house knows more silent hours now, but it is a rich and remembering silence. The Dunbarton High School Spartans and the Anderson Colle- giate Raiders of Whitby collided yet again, this time for the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athlet- ics (LOSSA) senior girls' volley- ball championship at Pine Ridge High School. In an exhibition of volleyball featuring two of the province's most talented teams, a near -capac- ity crowd at Pine Ridge witnessed a classic high school match -up, featuring long rallies and gutsy plays on both sides of the net As has been the case in all the teams' previous matches, it came down to the wire to decide the winner, with Anderson eking out 16-14, 16-14 wins to claim the LOSSA volleyball crown in straight games. For the Anderson Raiders, it was their third consecutive LOSSA senior volleyball champi- onship victory. Spartans' coach Jim Higgs says the regular -season games between the two teams were nip and tuck, with Dunbarton winning three times and Anderson victorious on three occasions. The LOSSA title game was no exception. "It was a typical Anderson- Dunbarton game," says Spartans' coach Jim Higgs. "Tight play: two talented teams: well prepared and working hard." However, Higgs is looking ahead to the possible re -match of the two teams at the Durham -York Secondary Schools Athletic Asso- ciation (DYSSAA) championships at Dr. D.W. Williams High School in Aurora on Thursday. "It's our turn to win next," says Higgs of the DYSSAA volleyball title. His counterpart, Anderson coach Gord Williamson, con- curred that the teams were on a collision course for the LOSSA title all season long, with each game marked by aggressive, disci- plined play. "That's the way it's been all season," says Williamson, refer- ring to the fever -pitch of the play in the LOSSA final. "Unfortunate- ly, we're both ranked in the top three in the province, but only one of us will get to go to OFSAA (provincial championships). The only team to beat us in the whole province is Dunbaron." To get into the finals, Dunbar - ton downed Pickering High School in straight games 15-5, 15- 11. Meanwhile, the Anderson Raiders gained entrance to the championship after ousting Henry Street High School of Whitby 15- 2, 15-7 in the semi-finals. The Pickering Dance Compa- ny, comprised of 17 young women between the ages of 12 and 18, is currently planning fund-raising events for an exchange program to France this summer. If all goes according to plan, the girls will spend three weeks in Marseille, France and will host French dancers here next summer. Formed at the beginning of December, the Pickering Dance Company is a non-profit organiza- tion under the direction of Karen Davies, who operates the Picker- ing School of Ballet. The new company performs ballet, jazz and modern dance free of charge in area schools, retirement homes and at other community events. -It's just a dream I've had for a long time," says Ms. Davies of the new group. "I did it when I was a child — performing in retirement homes. It's a good feeling when you're doing something for some- one else." The public exposure is also good for the dancers, all of whom are her students, she adds. The planned trip to France will include study of dance, perform- ing, touring and learning about the French culture and language. The company is willing to per- form at community functions and would gratefully accept donations for the trip. For more information, call Ms. Davies at 699-8566. lKi y EAT FREE!
