The blaze occurred shortly after I1 a.m. at a home on the ninth concession between Brock Rd. and Old Brock Rd., say Durham Regional Police. It's thought the fire started in a woodstove. A garage containing a car, two snowmobiles and a trailer was destroyed, a loss estimated between 525,000 and $30,000, police say. They had no estimate for dam- ages to the home. See CRASH.—Page 7 John Deveau, 63, and his wife Sarah, Nuclear calamity possible. group PICKERING - Chances of Ontario having a'Urr- nobyl-scale" nuclear accident are one in 17, anti-nucle- ar activists claim. Quoting a recent study by American Dr. Gordon Thompson, who holds a PhD in mathematics, a corah- tion of environmental groups says the risk of an acci- dent here is 26 times higher than Ontario Hydro's esti- mate, and twice the odds of rolling "snake eyes" with a pair of dice. "This study shatters the myth of the supenor safety of the CXN-DU reactor," says Dave 'Martin of Nuclear Awareness Project. "The risk of a major accident at Darlington. Pickering or Bruce is about the same as it was at Chernobyl." But that's like figuring out the probability of a jumbo jet crashing into SkyDome or an earthquake col- lapsing Toronto's subway system, says Hugh Spence of the Atomic Energy Control Board. Tux. AECB is the nuclear industry's federal regulating agency. "The interpretation by this group seems to be, at the least, questionable," Mr. Spence; says. "I gather they're imagining a worst-case scenam, but it borders ort the incredible... It goes somewhat beyond the hounds of credibility." A letter written to the AECB by Dr. Thompson focuses on earthquake asks, says Mr. Spence. 'We're already looking at the seismic question in the Picker- ing -Darlington arra. It's not something that's new." An earthquake here is only one possibility Dr. Thompson looked at when assessing the nuclear acci- dent risk, says Irene Kock of Durham Nuclear 4ware- ness. A "severe accident" at the Darlington plant -xxdd kill 200,000 people, the coalition says, and %. Kock maintains Pickering would be even worse off Because it has older reactors. But Pickering Nuclear Generating Station spokesman Don Terry says Dr. Thompson's Audy "is based on two reports that have been discredited by nat"W experts ( the Geological Survey of Canada) on earthquakes. The two reports this is based on are exag- gerated and lack credibility." The accident at Chernobyl in the former Soviet Union occurred after a block of graphite in a reactor caught fire, blew the reactor roof off and allowed radioactive smoke to escape, says Mr. Terry. In con- trast, Pickering uses heavy water as a coolant instead of graphite and has a vacuum budding around reactors that acts as a c ontainri ent system. Soetens acclaimed PC choice AJAX-PICKERING - Local Progressive Conservatives are hoping to keep Rene Soetens in Ottawa, choosing him as their candidate in the next federal elec- tion. Mr. Soetens. current MP for Ontario Riding, won the candida- cy by acclamation Wednesday night. About 200 Tories gathered at the Ajax Community Centre for the meeting. In accepting the candidacy, Mr. Soetens pledged to continue his "Triple A" commitment that he campaigned on in the 1988 election — accessibility, avail- ability and accountability. "I promise to maintain that 'triple A' promise to you." He outlined how, he's kept that promise since being elected in 1988. mentioning how he brought cabinet ministers to the riding, returned even call and letter and attended numerous community functions. He also criticized the other parties. saying that Liberal poli- cies waver "depending on who's asking" the NDP would do to Canada what Premier Bob Rae has done to Ontario: and the Reform Party "would pit one part of Canada against another in needless. endless referendums." He urged people to "make your vote count" and suggested that haN mg an experienced MP such as himself is "%- al it we are to face the difficult challenges ahead.'. The Women's Action Coali- tion (Durham) will host a meet- ing which features Ajacian Don Sullivan, who successfully fought the federal government to change the Parole Act and the Penitentiary and Reform Act. Ontario Riding's Reform Party candidate waged his battle following the murder of his 21 - year -old daughter Pamela by a criminal out of prison on manda- tory supervision 12 years ago. A co-founder of the support group Victims of Violence, Mr. Sullivan has also helped enshrine victims' rights in the country's criminal code. He will be introduced at the meeting by Jerry Amernic, author of Victims: The Orphans of Justice, which recounts Mr. Sullivan's fight to change the system. The meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rouge Hill Library, 1340 Rougemount Dr., youth of Hwy. 2, Pickering. Mr. Soetens has announced he'll continue hosting Vox Pop forums Mown -hall style meetings) this year. The sessions are held on the last Friday of every month. The term "Vox Pop" is derived from "vox populi", Latin for "voice of the people". The meet- ings are not set to an agenda or a fixed list of items: instead, resi- dents are invited to air their views on any subject of concern to them. "Open and frank dialogue with My constituents gives me impor- tant input and keeps me updated on the concerns and ideas that exist in the community — some- thing I need in order to properly represent this riding," says Mr. Soetens, who began hosting the forums shortly after being elected to Parliament in 1988. "I can hear their comments and explain to those in attendance the rationale behind government decisions." The next Vox Pop forum will be held Friday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Ajax Municipal Council Chambers on Harwood Ave. For more information, call Mr. Soetens' office at 686-0432. 427-1047 DOINd Finch YYC 2 m KinpMon Rd. • True Pay-as-you-go • No contracts • No risk • Beginner to advanced classes • Showers • Childcare • Step training MONEY BACK GUARANTEE if you are not satisfied with your class, we will refund your cost. $5per (10 dam card mttltttutn wtOt Otis aM dass oft tl!npires Jan. 31/'93 pius FREE TRIAL CLASS Just pa a class from the sftdt* below and come on in. Durham Board of Education trustees are thinking about ending tech- nological and family studies as a wary to avoid a tax hike and soothe ratepayers already over -burdened with financial responsibilities. But, we'll remind them that "This program must be viewed as an inte- gral part of a senior student's curriculum," in the words of several dozen parents at Roland Michener Public School in Ajax. The parents sent a form letter to the board after hearing of a proposal to eliminate design and technology and family studies from the Grades 7 and 8 curriculum. "How could anyone take life skills away from students in today's world:'" asks Cathy Brock, whose three children attend Westney Heights Public School in Ajax. "Durham is a bedroom community and many kids don't see their parents until late. These classes teach children how to fend for themselves." And, that is more important than ever before, especially in a society in which there are already too many crimes against children and at a time when more and more kids are left home alone as both parents work to be able to pay their taxes and other bills. We agree with Ms. Brock and the Roland Michener parents that cuts in this year's public school board budget should be made elsewhere -- in areas where they'd have less impact on students. Areas such as excursions to local art galleries, other field trips and the outdoor education program, areas already being considered for cuts. Trustees should also consider slashing competitive athletics while main- taining physical education. And, they could cut out many music programs without adversely affecting youngsters. Under no circumstance should the trustees end courses that teach life skills. After all, those are skills that will last the students a lifetime. But you blew it. Your answer to all the problems seems to be taxes, taxes and more taxes. Prime example, "Cross Border Shop- pers" caused through high taxa- tion — your answer, more taxes. Now I hear we're going to have yet another tax, under the guise of toll roads and bridges (what are our vehicle taxes for'), complete with its crown corpora- tion. Just what we need, more civil servants with huge salaries and bigger pensions (at least at the top of the scale). Isn't there enough hold-ups on the road already? Well Bob, you've still got a couple of years to straighten things out, but time is running out. Let's have more efficiency and less taxation — restore our faith. And, the play could be a strong contender for theatre festival hon- ors in the comedy section April 18. Theatre groups make it very difficult for critics to be critical when they mount such fine pro- ductions. The set was superb — divided nicely into two apartments; deco- ration was tasteful: and props were excellent. Lighting, although basic and simple, was right on, not too powerful. The music was fantastic but there lies my only criticism: for me, at least. it was far too loud during the scene chanoes. Any play with only four char- acters is both an actor's and a director's dream. So much indi- vidual attention can be given to every scene. Director Dewsberry has done just that and the actors have obviousiv taken it all in. Some directors have difficulty interpreting Simon's works. Dewsbcrry has not and. with the help of a strong_ cast, has given us a wonderful reflection of life with all its loves, laughs and sorrows. Chapter Two tells the story of George Schneider whose wife has Passed away and who is attempt- ing to fit back into society and start dating again. Always willing to help is his philandering brother Leo. Enter the two women — Jennie Malone, fresh from a divorce, and her friend Faye Medwick. The acting was superb. Jerry Chad- wick, who up to now has been more involved in musical theatre, gave a strong yet sensitive por- trayal of George who is still trying to get over the untimely death of his much -loved wife of 12 years. I doubt if any Pickering actor has had his name appear more times in this column than Mario Dalimonte, who plays Leo. Those of you who have seen this perfor- mance or intend to see it will understand whv. He is one of the most versatile actors on the scene today and shows it in his performance as Leo. lie shows us his womanizing side. his difficulty with his own marriage and his deep love and concern for his brother. The two women were equally good. Merle Garhe as Faye Med- wick _ave a very fine perfor- mance as she planned and plotted the affair which had the audiences EBRxTF, CEL iptr OCR A ` at the .tion Recrea Yic .erinK Lomple, Kd. 101 `a►leN Y arm o?*IF ty4 TVA& l G• V ,Jp OtA NOOP ., n wwa Pickering (I m. Her voice, stage movement and character were right on, she showed a real warmth and sensitivity as she struggled with her own needs while at the same time trying to cope with and understand George's problems. This is a fine show. I hope you can get out to see it.
