All four stores are still open for business, Mr. Belz stresses. His company, Triangle Drugs Inc., has debts totalling 55.1 million. Mr. Belz, whose stores have sponsored local sports teams and contributed to charitable campaigns, opened the Whitby location in 1984. He followed with the Pickering store in 1986, the West Hill outlet in 1989 and the Ajax store in 1991. DURHAM - You want to strap on the boards but are worried Jack Frost hasn't drooped enough snow to fulfill your need for speed. Time to put your skis away till the next snowfall, right? "Wrong, though that's the hardest thing to convince new skiers of,” admits Rick Werner, manager of Lakeridge Ski Resort north of Ajax - "So often, people make a deci- sion on whether to go skiing by looking outside their front door," he explains. "But snow -making machines have gone high tech, so we can ski from November to March- When we close, we usual- ly still have snow on all our slopes but know people are going to start heading to their cottages." Jim Peddie, manager of Dag - mar Ski Resort, also north of Ajax, agrees- "People don't realize just how much snow we can actu- ally make," he notes. "There doesn't even have to be snow on the ground and we can have a foot of snow on the slopes within a day," he says of a system which uses about 500 gallons of water a minute. But the "biggest fallacy" of all rates man-made snow as "harder to ski" than natural flakes. "In fact, it's better to ski," says Mr. Werner. Man-made snow takes longer to thaw and stands up to more wear and tear. For instance. a foot of natural snow measures just an inch when compacted, while the equivalent of the man-made stuff measures eight inches, Mr. Wern- er notes. -Natural snow tends to be lighter so it pushes out of the way and gets icier quicker," adds Mr. Peddie- "Man-made snow is less susceptible to melting." My neighbor had the unpleasant task of removing our pet from the road If the people who had hit our dog — through no fault of their own — had driven off, they would have had a teenager filled with anger, and disgust along with sorrow. By staying, you helped her cope. It took more guts to remain than leave. Thank you. Four days later my daughter's wallet was lost at Pickering Town Centre. Harry Beaumont, who had the distinction of being Pickering's oldest and longest transit rider, died Wednesday at the age of 98. "He was dearly loved by all the drivers," says Pickering Transit director George Papik. "He was a joy to have on the buss." Mr. Beaumont became a regular bus passenger in 1971, two years after the service started, says Mr. Papik. He's remembered for doing thoughtful little things like treating everyone on the bus to chocolates and helping new drivers become familiar with their mutes. Several years ago, transit employees helped him celebrate a birthday by presenting him a jacket with "#I Transit Rider" emblazoned on the back. "He was a real special guy," says Mr. Papik. A service for Mr. Beaumont will be held tomorrow, Saturday, at McEach- nie Funeral Home at 1 pm. (See Obituary below.) "We're really excited about starting this project," says Barbara Rander of Rander and Associates, the consulting firm hired to undertake the study. "There's a lot of enthu- siasm. I have high hopes for this project and I hope some- thing really good comes out of i[... The study was initiated by the Ministry of Social and Community Services and will encompass four regions — Durham, Northumberland, Peterborough, and Victoria and Haliburton. Shelters for abused women in each region, including the Denise House in Durham, are involved in the project. "Basically it's a consulta- tion process to get women to speak for themselves about what kinds of services they need," says Ms Rander of the study. She says there'll be a spe- cial focus on the needs of ethno-cultural women, rural women, native women and women with disabilities in order to gather information on strategies that may better address the needs of abused women from diverse back- grounds. We want to see if these women are being adequately served," she says. The main objective of the study is to identify local prior- ities on services and barriers to services for women at risk of being victims of violence. "The current studies sug- gest that one in three women experience violence at some time in their lives," she says. "We're talking to women who have already been (through an abusive situation) or women who are currently involved in a violent relationship who may not be using the services (right now)." The study not only wants to hear from women in abu- sive relationships, but from those who have been sexually assaulted and those who have -survived abuse as a child. The study received $175,000 in funding from the Ministry of Community and Social Services. The first part of the study, which will begin in February, will involve interviews with service providers such as shel- ters, police, rape crisis cen- tres, the Children's Aid Soci- ety, hospitals and anyone who might come into contact with women experiencing violence in their lives, says Ms Rattder. The second part of the study will involve individual interviews and focus groups with women who are or who have been victims of violence. All women participating in interviews or fcx:us groups are ensured confidentiality and will be compensated for child care and transportation costs. Cultural interpreters, specifically trained to deal with issues of violence against women, will be provided for women who speak languages other than English. Once the study is complet- ed, Ms Rander says it will be followed by a second study to implement some of the rec- ommendations. "We want to do our best so that this just doesn't become a report on a shelf," stresses Ms Rander. Sandra McCormack, exec- utive director of Denise House, a shelter for abused women and their children in Durham, says she's looking forward to the ongoing com- munity participation in this project. "I think it's a very positive step on part of the ministry to allow women in the communi- ty to say what they need," she says. Ms McCormack hopes the study will identify the barriers to services that exist and that it will come up with strategies to eliminate them. If you would like to partic- ipate in a focus group or an interview, call Barbara Randerat 1-800-265-9631.
