PICKERING - The hiring of a dozen fire-

But whether residents will see an actual

Keeping the peace their mission
FROM PAGE Al
Mr. Surcon "couldn't believe
it" when told he was going to
Cyprus. "I was in total shock. I
thought they had everyone picked.
I couldn't believe it."
He now says, "I think it will be
a good experience for me."
Mr. Bassingthwaite in Septem-
ber put his name on a list used to
select personnel for Cyprus. "I
was told it was a year to a year -
and -a -half before they would con-
sider selecting me. They wanted
people with more experience."
Since being selected, he's been
"looking for an answer to how I
was picked."
When Mr. Bassingthwaite was
told he'd been selected, he was
"excited and scared — excited
because it's an awesome opportu-
nity and scared because there's a
chance of seeing some combat,
although the chances are very
slim."
He's also scared because going
to Cyprus means living "up to the
expectations of everyone."
Both men were notified of their
posting at the end of November.
While they're in Cyprus,
they'll man observation posts and
patrol a dividing line between the
two factions.
n
Mr. Surcon, 20, is a second -
year General Aviation student at
Georgian College in Barrie. He
joined the reserves because he
"needed a summer job to get back
to college for a semester. It was
the only job I could come across."
From January to May of 1993,
Mr. Surcon was to go out on a
work term for school. He'll be in
Cyprus from February to August
and that time will be considered
his work term, he says.
Mr. Surcon's home unit is the
7th Toronto Royal Canadian
Artillery unit.
Mr. Bassingthwaite, 19, is a
member of the 48th Highlanders.
He'll be in Cyprus for five to nine
months.
He graduated from Pickering
High School last June and was
taking a year off. Joining the
reserves is "something I always
wanted to do. 1 went down one
night and signed up."
The two men met while doing
basic training in Petawawa during
the summer.
After being told they were
going to Cyprus, both reported to
Petawawa at the end of November
:for three weeks of training. They
returned there on Tuesday for
:more training before heading for
Cyprus next month.
Earlier this year. Canada
announced it was pulling its
peacekeeping troops out of
Cyprus in 1993.
The country has been divided
for years, with Greece and
Turkey claiming the Mediter-
ranean island.
Joining Canada in the peace-
keeping role are British and Aus-
trian troops.

Kids' village to teach traffic safety "
By NOW&4 NI NELSON
Durham Staff
DURHAM - A new village will
be constructed in Durham Region
— likely in Ajax or Whitby — at a
cost of around $650,000.
It won't have any permanent res-
idents — just youthful visitors who
will learn about traffic safety.
"lite Ajax Optimist Club and the
Oshawa Parkwood Rotary Club are
combining efforts to get the chil-
dreri's safety village off the ground
A deal for two acres of,land
should be finalized soon, confirms
Ken McKenzie, the Optimist co-
chairman. "We're very close, we
have several options.,,
When it's ready — likely by the
spring of '94 — it will be handed
over to Durham Regional Police
who7l use it to teach safety to chil-
dren eight years of age and under.
Sgt. Gwen Cutler, who handles
community relations for the cops,
estimates between 15,000 and
18,000 students in Durham Region
will visit the site where they will be
able to walk, cycle and drive (minia-
ture czars, of course) through a mock
village, complete with traffic fights,
railroad crossings and road signs, to
learn about safety.
Organizers will try to raise
$400,000 worth of "money or ser-
vices". Some money will by raised
by persuading companies to sponsor'
the buildings in the village.
And, organizers will gladly
accept components that will make
up the children's village such as
traffic signals, street lights and land-
scaping.
Mr. McKenzie says a portable
classroom will be on site, and chil-
dren will receive a half-hour instruc-
tion from the police officer and then
spend another half hour putting it
into practice in the village streets.
The two service clubs say they'll
kick off a fund-raising drive in Ajax
tonight with a $10,000 donation
from Dupont in Ajax.
Children's villages are already in
place in Waterloo and Halton
Region with one currently under
construction in Peel Region.
"We'll have the best of the three
of them," says Mr. McKenzie.
He became enamored with the
idea during a visit to the Halton
Region facifity three years ago. He
thought Durham children could also
tx;nefit from such a facility, and his

Digging deeper
to fund educatimon
School boards in Durham Region face a tough year in 1993 and are set
to tighten belts another notch to balance growing educational needs with
dwindling tax dollars from the Provincial government.
Adding to the monumental challenge are Provincially -mandated pro-
grams - destreaming in Grade 9 and the implementation of junior kinder-
garten -- that loom on the horizon for Durham Region's boards of educa-
tion. At a time when funding is harder to come by for school boards
across Ontario, it is most needed.
The NDP government continues to scramble for methods to raise tax
revenues, while many of its traditional dependents (hospitals, colleges
and universities, municipalities and school boards) are being told to pro-
vide the same levels of service with less funding.
Certainly this lingering recession has had an effect on the amount of
revenue taken from taxpayers, and certainly the consequences of that dip
in revenue are tougher funding decisions.
But school boards are providing the foundation on which young minds
are built and expanded.
An immediate measure to ease the funding crunch (and to avoid cuts in
educational services and programming) would he for school boards to
seek a proportionate rise in the education portion of local tax bills.
It would he painful for most of us who are also finding less and less
money in our pockets, but it would help ensure that the quality of educa-
tion in the Region isn't being eroded because there is no money in the
Provincial till.
It it's true that tough times require tough measures, then taxpayers in
Durham Region can expect a sizable hike in their taxes in 1993.
Both school boards are committed to paring their expenses to the bone
to minimize the impact on local taxpayers, but the pain will be felt any-
way.
We'll all have to dig just a little deeper, for just a little longer.

School's Christmas activities disappoint parent
To the editor.
I am w-riung to express my dis-
appointment with the recent
Christmas activities held at St.
Marguerite Bourgeouys School.
M", children have been in atten-
dance at this school for the past
10 years. I have had the pleasure
of witnessing many a Christmas
concert, play or program — even
back to the years of pageant on
the hill outside shivering in the
cold, but proudly singing carols as
we watched the Christ story
unfold.
This year. the agenda was dif-

ferent_ All the Christmas activities
were scheduled during the school
day. My daughter's performance
was Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., and
then again Thursday at 1:45 p.m.
%1y son's class had chosen to do
nothing. When I questioned the
principal regarding this, I was
informed it was the teacher's
choice. The teacher in turn said the
class was polled and only three
children wanted to participate,
therefore no activity was planned
at all. My son was not aware of
any poll. My youngest, in senior
kindergarten), had a Nursery
Rhvme Parade in November
(again, in the afternoon) that lasted
about 10-15 minutes and was wit-
nessed by approximately 15-20
parents (at least three classes of
children were in the parade). Last
year at the kindergarten concert
there wasn't a seat to be had in the
gym when all the parents were
there to proudly watch (and film)
the kindergarten concert.
This is the first year in 10 that I
had to return to the work force. I
am trying my best to be mother,
wife and working woman and con-
tinue to share and participate in
my children's education. I have
always done volunteer and com-
mittee work within our school.
Therefore, I was very disappointed
when the only explanation I
received on questioning the princi-
pal concerning the inconvenience
and improbability that most par-
ents would be able to attend these
Christmas festivities was that a
vete had been taken among the
teachers and the majority had
decided that a daytime program
was to be held. It was even
inferred that at one point the
option had been to do nothing at
all — and we were lucky that even
this was the final decision.
For the sake of my daughter
(the one child that had any Christ-
mas part at all) I took two half
days off work and drove the dou-
ble trip in one day from Pickering
to Oshawa to Pickering to Oshawa
to witness her shining hour.
No thanks to the staff at St.
:Marguerite Bourgcouys who think
it best to schedule Christmas activ-
ities that only the lucky few who
can afford to stay home in this
time of recession to catch that
happy smile and wave as their
child makes his way up to the
stage. Bah Humbug'

PICKERING - A weekend
rampage in a residential area has
left 22 cars damaged and a trail of
destruction totalling up to
$10,000.
Durham Regional Police say
the cars were broken into early
Sunday morning on Ashford Dr.,
Beechlawn Dr. and Marshcourt
Dr., located behind the Metro East
Trade Centre.
Windows were smashed and
stereos and cassette tapes were
among the items stolen. Inspector
Tony Turner offers a "conserva-

ranging from 57,000 to S10,000,
but doesn't know whether the van-
dalism is the work of gangs or an
individual.

He said he'd like to talk to the
vandals if they're caught.
