The investigation continues. "The upcoming year will be a significant year as far as Catholic education is concerned." He'll meet with fellow trustees and staff in the new year to decide what to do about the cutback in transfer payments from the Province. "We'll have to evaluate all our expenditures now," says Mr. Old - man, "and we'll have to make sig- nificant changes in the way we're doing business." "The new funding is designed to do an awareness campaign with students on date and acquaintance rape," says Lynda Sauriol, who's in charge of cam- pus safety. Earlier this year the college received about $25,000 for improved lighting, fences and signs. A brochure on campus safety called Be Aware was also developed. The Province announced recently it will give $402,000 to post -secondary institutions to combat date and acquaintance rape on campuses. This money is part of $1.5 million promised by the Ministry of Colleges and Uni- versities to make campuses safer for women. The money will be used to improve lighting, install emergency phones, fund aware- ness campaigns and for other improvements. Durham College doesn't know yet what its portion of the .$402,000 will be. "(Date and acquaintance rape) is a major concern in society at large," says Ms. Sauriol. "Statis- tics show it is most likely to occur in colleges and universities because of the culture. There's a lot of young people in their active, dating years and a culture with the acceptance of a lot of social activity." But she adds that part of the trick of dealing with date rape is the problem of not knowing how common it is, because many do not come forward to report it. "We're assuming it is an issue," says Ms. Sauriol. "Society is growing in its understanding of what is assault and in its willing- ness in a group to say it's not all right." PAGE &THE NEWS ADVERTISER SATURDAY, JANUARY 2,190 Q rb I n nn The RIDE isn't over 'Me holidays are over and so is the annual publicity blitz surround- ing the Durham Regional Police Services' RIDE campaign. The message of RIDE (in case you've been on another planet, that's Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) has finally sunk in. While the number of cars stopped by RIDE units has increased, the number of drivers charged with being impaired is down over previous years. Most people are refraining from drinking and driving. That's good news, but there are still drunk drivers out there, and that's of concern to all of us. Innocent people are still being killed by impaired drivers. Those motorists -- or should we say drinkers -- who are still in the deadly habit of having "one for the road" shouldn't be too hasty in toasting the end of the RIDE campaign. Those menaces on wheels will still be the hunted quarry of RIDE officers who patrol roads and high- ways all year long. Although the RIDE publicity campaign ends, RIDE itself goes on. It's a worthwhile message to keep in mind no matter what time of year it is. lose With another year of bringing you community news stretching ahead of us, we at the Flews Advertiser would like to invite our read- ers to stay in touch. We're always interested in hearing about what's going on in your neighborhood. We can't always print it, but we're interested. One common query from service clubs is how to get newspaper publicity, and many call their local municipal governments looking for assistance in that regard. Just pick up the phone and call our news- room (683-5110), and we'll do what we can to help. Other readers believe that anonymous phone calls and letters will do the trick. Sorry. Your name doesn't necessarily have to be used in a news story, but please don't hang up after blurting out a few sentences over the phone. As well, all letters must be signed. We look forward to serving you in 1993. Letters F71 Volunteers are key to Cancer Society success To the editor, The South Durham Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to announce that the 1992 fund-raising goal of 5263,000 was surpassed, and that S264,120 was raised. This was no easy feat during such a recessionary year. The success of our campaign was directly related to the strength and commitment of our team of vol- tmteers. Our team consists of people who organize special events throughout the year, as well as over 2,500 captains and can- vassers who conducted a success- ful residential canvass. The monies raised not only fund research projects, but enable our team of dedicated education and patient services volunteers to implement excdknt programs to enhance the lives of cancer p cents and their families. I would like to acknowledge the role of the News Advertiser as part of our team, as well. The eaccellent coverage you have pn) - vKW us with during the past year has enabled urs oo inform the pub- lic of the serious need to raise funds, so that we can meet the needs of cancer patients within our own community. On behalf of the South Durham Unit of the Cancer Society, I would like to extend my thanks to the members of our volunteer team, as well as to the many busi- nesses and organizations who sponsored or assisted with special events. In closing I would like to also express the Society's appreciation to the public in general, who had to dig even deeper into their pock- ets this year. Thank you. Job Wbeler, Communications Chairman, South Durham Unit Canadian Cancer Society Don't call it ' was ' To the editor, I am saddened and upset as what appears to be an attack at the cele- bration of Jesus Christ's birth. We do not call victoria Day - Vday, Canada Day - Cday, Thanksgiv- ing Day - Tday, so why in the world do we call Chrisunas Day, Xmas? The name of Jesus Christ can raise stratg emotions, that is no reason to take his name out of the day that celebrates his birth. The name of Jesus is often used in passing or as a swear word in this society's every- day conversation, and yet when it comes to Christmas, most are quick to replace "Christ" with an "X". I find it amazing that the media and mer- chants can jump on the "gravy train" that Christmas brings, and yet not call Christmas what it acWally is — C lirisunas! Trustees who sat on the board before 1991 municipal elections had approved a six -per cent increase for trustees and 25 -per cent for the chair. • Room was made for women at the top of the board's ladder in March. Following heated debate, trustees approved an employment equity policy which follows provin- cial guidelines and calls for 50 per cent of supervisory positions to be filled by women by the year 2000. • Public school supporters faced their smallest tax increase since 1974 when trustees approved a S358.1 -million budget in April and parsed on an average 3.67 -per cent to taxpayers. hike The ousting of popular teacher Jim McMurtry angered some Ajax High School students who held a protest in front of the Bayly St. school for several days in April. Their calls for reinstatement weren't met and Mr. McMurtry left for Europe. • Trees are in and Bibles ac out- In utIn April, trustees decided to give trees to new schools for official openirtgs rather than the traditional Bibie. • The board received the go- ahead frau the ministry of educa- tion to corse up with alternatives to junior kindergarten, which would cast about $24 million to establish. In November, the board slammed the ministry because about half of its capital grants of S8.7 million were earmarked for junior kinder- Sartm construction projects- • Hopes of introducing a modi- fied school year were overwhelm- ingly reject- ed by parents in a May vote that required 75 - per cent sup- port at five t a r g e t s c h o o l s Louise Farr throughout Durham, including Highbush in Pickering. The plan, one option being considered as the board wres- tles with overcrowding, would have kept schools open year-round, though students would have received the same number of instructional days as under the tradi- tional calendar. • A pro -white heritage -roup "congratulated- Dunbarton High School students for "standing up for their race- on a 24-hour hotline, though only a few hundred of the school's 2,300 students stood by the Toronto-based Heritage Front when its members showed up for a demonstration at the Pickering school in May. • A bleak job market may have been the reason behind increased enrolment at summer school. About 1,600 students attended classes offered by the board throughout Durham. • Plans were approved in June to transform Ajax's Harwood Sec- ondary School into a full -program school starting in September 1993. The school was later renamed Exeter High School to reflect its new image. • Pine Ridge Secondary School, the board's fust new high school in more than 20 years, opened its Pick- ering doors in September.
