Durham Regional Police Staff Sgt. Sandy Ryrie says the victim, who he wouldn't iden- tify, was taken to Ajax -Picker- ing Hospital and later trans- ferred to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto with "serious but not life-threatening" injuries. It's not known at this time whether the man was the intended victim, Sgt. Ryrie says. Police were initially called to a fight that began in Rock A Billies, 250 Bayly St. W., just before l 1 pm., and then shift- ed outside. Seconds later, cops received several more calls indicating that four shots had been fired in the parking lot by a man. Police recovered a semi- automatic handgun from the area and arrested a suspect, without incident, a short dis- -tance away. An 18 -year-old Metro -area man faces two counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated assault, possession of a restricted weapon and using a firearm while commit- ting an offence. l guan ly n xm mmft -- Ad eefte fn A)= -Picketing News Adrwliser (683-5110) and 0dMwCe-Wh by Atis week (579-440t.114„600 pnwnm .....Y WedraKbyl Ile SPECIAL! a BOXING DAY OPENS EARLY! .:LW7der&l r . . . -ewOpens 8:30 a.m. •Sunday, December 27 ? ,;aSbopto MV WW MU& A -A- I nL i%zwa ^V v XX j jbLK, wLl U-, UVA L MMrdc AN &"A YOUR ONTARIO FORD & MERCURY DEALERS tr DRIVEHOA IE THEDEA I OF THE YEAR, IF 170CASHBACK' Y92AEROSTAR UPo $1500CASH** $1500CASH** ON V2 F=WJUAW MUMS ON V2 if & rcw" PLUSm.HUGEDISCOUNTS ONREMAINING 192 MODEL S 0FA;r a, FOWarowivwc Escoxrsmgausraxciue4 ra nosrmvo. •cotytraeoA+aaqus, cocMsn TMCM HURRY.! Heather Crisp, the fact finder appointed in negotiations between the Durham Board of Education and its high school teachers, agreed with the teachers that the public board must have money, or it wouldn't be building a new administration building. But chair Louise Farr says the fact finder didn't "thoroughly" review the issue. She says Ms. Crisp neglected to address the fact that the centre is being built with the new Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby and will save the Board about $3 mil- lion in the first 20 nears. Mrs. Farr says the new building will save the dollars the Board pays out to lease office space and it will also he cost-effective. because it will share services with the new school. Mrs. Farr says the construction will also create jobs, improve the effective- ness of the organiTation and pro- vide more suitable facilities for staff, including members of the bargaining unit. None of that was addressed," says Mrs. Farr. Ms. Crisp wa:s apfx)inted as fact finder by the Education ReLttions Commission in November. A fact finder meet. with both parties and then writes a report on the issues agreed upon and those that are in dispute. Mrs. Farr says trustees on the employee relations committee feel that some of the recommendations in the fact finder's report are inap- propriate in a time of financial restraint. The report states that the pay increase being offered by the Board is not sufficient to get an agreement. The Board was offering its teachers a two-year contract with a 0.5 -per -cent increase effective Feb. 1, another 0.5 -per -cent increase: in September, and a final 0.5 -per -Cent increase in April, 1994. for a total of just over 1.5 M cent. The fact finder recommended a one-year agreement with a 1 -per- cent hike (the June. 1992, con- sumer price index of 0.5 per cent plus 0.5 per cent). The fact finder also suggested that all secondary teachers be given a day off on request. The Board estimates this could cost an additional $184,000 a year for sup- ply teachers. Mrs. Farr says trustees feel the recommendations don't take into account economic realities, and that any increase in costs for wages and for supply teachers must come directly from class- room programs for students. Accompanying you were two small children, one to your right, the second. pushing by you in a stroller. I was following a westbound vehicle, when it suddenly swerved to the left. When I refocused my thoughts, 1 realized why the other car had swerved. I too found myself swerving to avoid you, your chil- dren and also fighting to avoid oncoming traffic. With my heart in my throat, I checked the rear view mirror to reassure myself that you had not been hip When I did so, I noticed the vehicle behind me also swerv- ing to avoid you. For the safety of you and your children, I urge you, and all others walking our roads at night, to wear brightly -colored clothes, to walk facing traffic and remain on the shoulder of the road. I realize that pedestrians have the right of way: however, when the driver's attention is drawn to another situa- tion that is developing in front of them, your dark -colored clothing, combined with a dark winter's night and the lights of oncoming vehicles tend to obscure one's vision of you. Please, be visible. Robert Blackwell, Pickering To the editor, Announcing the 17 dump sites from which the final three will be chosen has predictably raised a flurry of objections. Conversely cheers of joy and the dismantling of signs came from landowners whose property did not make the final round. Apparently all sites are prime (is there any other) farm land, as, of course, are all housing devel- opments, shopping centres, golf courses and the marijuana crops in Keswick and Markham. Undoubtedly leaching from these sites will be a problem — although it did not stop the con- struction of a large subdivision next door to the Brock Road Landfill site. I also have it on good authori- ty (squirrels in the backyard) that the ground hogs and raccoons are miffed that their natural habi- tat will be destroyed. Let to look at the bright side — in 20 years the dump will be full and it can be converted into parkland as was done in Etobicoke. Who knows, Durham Region may have a new conservation area. "They did get a copy of the exam," says college spokesman Cheryl Bird. She says the matter was treated internally and police, who were informed of the incident, will not be further involved. The four students can appeal the decision, and will be able to attend the college next year. Police say a cleaner at the col- lege became suspicious when she spotted a man on the second floor of the Simcoe SL N. college just before midnight Dec. 15. The 21 -year-old was "cleaning up the floor under a ceiling tile that had been removed", says Durham Regional Police Consta- ble Jim Grimley. "He told her he was trying to retrieve a book. She asked him to go with her to securi- ty." Security staff then checked the area and found "one of the nearbv offices entered through the ceil- ing" and some footsteps on a desktop. Const. Grimley says the man then admitted that "he and three friends were trying to get a copy of the test". 411 The Town of Pickering P~gyp Department of Community Services and Facilities N. Ajax Transit director Terry Barnett says ridership on the Flag Bus has grown each month since the service began at the end of September. The bus carried 12 people a day that month, but ridership is up to 55 a day in December. "It's the best little thing I ever came up with,” Mr. Barnett says. "We expect ridership to continue so grow because of the uniqueness of the service." The 18 -seat bus carries able and handicapped riders, follow- ing a fixed route. It operates in off-peak hours of 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. "It has pretty impressive fig- ures hours," says The bus begins its route at Westwood Manor, at the corner of Harwood Ave. and Westney Rd. S., then travels to the seniors' residence at 655 Har- wood, to the Ajax Medical Cen- tre, to the hospital, to 40 Kitney Dr., to the LOEB Baywood in the Baywood Plaza, the Har- wood Place Mall, the Ajax Plaza, Ballycliffe Lodge on Sta- tion St., the Ajax GO station, then to the K Mart store in the Pickering Town Centre. The return route is reversed. A one-way trip from start b fun- ish takes 30 minutes. The trip is called Route 125, to commemorate Canada's 125th anniversary. Passengers can board the bus anywhere by flagging the driv- er- And, riders can get off wher- ever they want and not just at fixed stops. Ajax Transit has an "open- door policy" with Pickering Transit, Mr. Barnett says, so the bus will stop for Pickering resi- dents who want a ride. As well, Pickering Transit transfer slips will be accepted so a person could use the bus to get from Pickering to Ajax. Fane for all rides is $1. 15. People heading to or from the Harwood Place Mail can ride on the bus free just by telling the driver that that's their destination. Merchants in the mall pay the fare. Paul Brewer, store manager at Miracle Food Mart there, says 231 people had their fares paid by the merchants in November. For more on the service, can Ajax Transit at 619-2529. Bringing holiday greetings "from the beleaguered hamlet of Whitevale", a group of carollers gave special renditions of holiday classics in protest of hosting moth- er dump. With politicians joining in, they sang "Fill the Fields with Bags of Garbage" (to the tune of Deck the Halls); The 12 Days In Whitevale ("On the first day in Whitevale Ruth Grier gave to me a dumpsite in the country'); and, to the tune of We Three Kings, they warbled, "Let us toast the IWA, offspring off Ruth Grier and Rae." But during the same meeting, council refused to call for environ- ment minister Ms. Grier's resigna- tion, as the city of Brampton has. Brampton council has requested all other municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area to follow its lead. Instead, mayor Wayne Arthurs has written a letter of protest to Ms. Grier over the Interim Waste Authority's plans to find a Dtiham- only dump. Four of five candidate sites are in Pickering. The mayor wrote that the TWA has "undermined the principles" of the Environmental Assessment Act and pointed out that Pickering has already hosted landfills for 20 years. He called for a "full, fair" examination of all alternatives in waste management. Councillor Rick Johnson announced that one of the Pickering sites, known as EE 11, should be dropped from consideration because a dump diene would inter- fere with a planned transformer sta- tion to serve the community of Seaton. Meanwhile, a team of consul- tants hired by the town is expected to make a report in March on the IWA search. The team includes experts in agriculture, air quality, archeology, design and operations, geotechnics, heritage resources, hydrogeology, and more. Runway guides Santa PICKERING - When Santa Claus flies over Pickering tomor- row night, he won't have any trouble finding a landing spot. High over the Finch Ave. - Fairport Rd. area, his eye is sure to fall on Red Bird Cres., which will be lined with glowing candles as residents create Santa's Runway. The idea for the event, organized by Caryn Johnson and Diane McCormack, was taken from a magazine, says resident Karen Pritchard. Committees were organized, a flyer was distributed, and door- to-door collections were taken to buy three candles per household. On Christmas Eve, they'll be placed in bags of sand at the bottoms of driveways and lit up at 6 p.m. in a ceremony designed to delight children. "It'll be quite something when they're all lit," predicts Ms. Pritchard, who estimates 350 candles will be glowing along the stmt "We've never done it before." The candles are expected to burn for three boors before a street committee gathers them up, she says. 0 a ADVERTISING FEATURE Peace of mind comes with CAA membership Membership to the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) - provides assurance of emergency roadside service when motorists need it CAA membership has numerous • benefits, in fact. Other starers for Pickering were Brett Kowan with two, and newcomer Matt Gibson, a defence - man who jointed the Panthers on the weekend to complete a trade with the North York Rangers, with one. "We gat back We from Kmgston Thursday and we just didn't Play well . We were just flat — no jump, enthusiasm or energy." Nath York led 3-2 midway through the sec- ond period, then proceeded to take control with three more markers. During this span, the Pan- thers had several good scoring opportunities but were started by the Rangers' goaliender. Chris Ludlow and Gibson scared for the Pan- thers. Why Advertise In Focus on Business Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being a part of the: Focus on Business advertising feature definitely has its advantage. Over the last few years a great many businesses -- of all sizes -- have found that investment in the Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser's and Oshawa/Whitby This Week's Focus on Business feature have generated extra phone calls that likely would not have otherwise occurred. How do you get involved? When a company makes a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also receives a full feature story, complete with pictures. The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions and even a historical overview. Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is done by the newspaper's staff: the ad design, story interview and writing, plus the taking of the photographs. All the business need to do is prepare for the increased sales volume. For more information call Janice at 683-5110. Durham Denture Clinic W. The school also offers defensive driving courses and air brake courses, with certificates upon completion. .As an introductory special, A & R is offering registrants a special saving on the full course until Jan. 30, 1993. For 25 hours theory, 10 hours in car and the road test, the total cost is $450 including GST. (The regular price is $499). For the person who already 'has everything', this would be an ideal gift. Anyone requiring more information is encouraged to call the A & R office at 686-2224, or drop by, at 398 Bayly St. W., Unit 5, just east of Westney R& S.
