Groen Samaritans aid ■ drowning man AJAX-PICKERING - Two local men might have saved a life by pulling an unconscious 27 - year -old from the bottom of a whirlpool in the Pickering Recreation Complex Tuesday night. The victim, a Pickering man, had an epileptic seizure at the recreation complex a year ago and is suspected of having had a similar seizure, says Tom Quinn, Pickering's director of community services and facilities. Tony Mousseau and Brent Tulloch are credit- ed with rescuing the man. The victim was discovered face -up underwa- ter at about 9 p.m. "I had finished playing squash and went for a whirlpool bath and he was at the bottom," recalls Mr. Mousseau, an Ajax resident. "I yelled at him but he didn't respond." Mr. Mousseau says he pulled the victim out of the water with the help of another man — identi- fied as Mr. Tulloch of Pickering — and started mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration. Mr. Mousseau, 45, says he had no training in resuscitation efforts but had seen it done on tele- vision. "All I could think of was to do that. It's just one of those things — you just react. I just wish I could've been there earlier. I don't need any recognition for it." But police are also crediting the two. "Their actions may well be responsible for saving a life," says Durham Regional Police Inspector Tony Turner. The man wasn't breathing when taken out of the vt►irlpool, says Constable Jim Grimley. Two lifeguards and an off-duty Pickering fire- fighter were able to get the victim breathing again, says Constable Grimley. "He coughed up a bit of fluid and began gulping for air." A short time later fire and ambulance crews arrived. The victim was rushed to Ajax -Pickering General Hospital and then transferred to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. According to Inspector Turner, he was in serious condition at press time. r O cc no 5 n zo 19 D O C • w wj MOW" M I m k"M" U L -MA", A 1: I 7NTRODUCING" Of NO G.S.T. with any matching Cook at these quality features: ;; - t ! ` ;' mattress set • • • • 111H MWERED HEAVY DUTY STEEL + '. Unhappy residents living in high-rise condomini- ums next door to the planned development near Hwy. 2 and Valley Farm Rd. have threatened to appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board. The developer, Tridel, has also -appealed to the OMB to have its original application of 226 units approved, company lawyer Steve Diamond said Monday. The proposal approved by the executive committee calls for 190 units. Mr. Diamond said the compa- ny went to the OMB after coun- ject were mayor Wayne Arthurs, who rattled off a long list of compromises made by Tridel, and coun- cillor Eileen Higdon, who called the development "a quality project." Outspoken opponents were councillors Rick Johnson and Maurice Brenner. Mr. Johnson said he'd side with residents, while Mr. Brenner accused Tridel of "not bargaining in good faith" because of the OMB appeal. The oper- ator was too "taken aback" to call police as he should have, Mr. Vokes adds. Most of the childish incidents occurred after plows inadvertently pushed snow back into shovelled driveways. "It's an unreasonable level of frustration," says Mr. Vokes of residents' behavior. "The guys are being paid to do a job." In the aftermath of the storm, plows were out again Tuesday clearing snow away from storm sewer catch basins in preparation for rain. That resulted in another flood of complaints to works depart- ment staff, who had already field- ed about 2,500 calls about unplowed streets and snow- Whokcd driveways between Friday and Sunday. People here just aren't used to the volume of snow dumped dur- ing the storm, says Mr. Vokes. The complaints came from people "leaning on a shovel at the end of their driveway, saying 'Boy, that was a tough two hours' and they see the plow coming back." The town's 22 snowplow oper- ators, who took 36 hours to clear all Pickering streets after the storm with nine pieces of equip- ment, are instructed to ignore the abuse hurled at them, he adds. Many people have called the public works department asking staff to "come get your snow" out of driveways, says Mr. Vokes. "Their first reaction is 'what a minute, this isn't my snow'." He adds of the department, "We didn't drop the snow. We're doing our best to get it off roads ... I'm very sorry but we do not have the equipment, budget or manpower to clear residential driveways." Mother Nature blew 5100,000 of taxpayers' money on the storm last Thursday and Friday. That represents one sixth of Mr. Vokes's annual snow -clearing budget ►'410 4 16 it• 4r, CITIZ N E L E C T R O N I C S 64• Warehouse Sale Eventi: ►. ell i FINAL WEEKEN Sale Ends Sun. Paula VanDusen, an employ- ee at Rotherglen Centre and a member of the negotiating team for Local 585 of the Ontario Pub - tic Service Employees Union, says there was a "fairly high yes vote" in favor of the pact The union doesn't want to release the vote results because "we don't want the employer to figure out who voted no," Ms. VanDusen says. The 30 workers at the centre had been on strike for a fust con- tract since Oct. 22. The main issues were scheduling and a grievance procedure, says Ms. VanDusen. The contract took effect this pest Monday and it runs to Dec. 31, 1994. Workers started to return to work Thursday and all will be back by this coming Monday. Ed Blazo, executive director of Kennedy House which oper- ates the centre, says, "We're very pleased, ecstatic they're back and we hope to get the programs back to normal in a short time." Time centre, on Ravenscroft Rd. north of Rossland Rd., holds up to 20 young offenders. The settlement was reached after 20 hours of negotiating on Friday, Dec. 11 and Saturday, Dec. 12 and another 12 on Mon- day, says Ms. VanDusen. On Friday "We thought we'd end up with nothing. Then the employer talked to his lawyer. The ball started rolling and they started to bargain with tis." The union negotiating team felt "this is it. It's all we're going to get," she says. The employees will work 12 - hour days for no longer than three days straight and they'll get two days off between shifts as well as every other weekend off. Prior to the strike, they'd been working eight-hour shifts, some- times for seven consecutive days with one day off, Ms. VanDusen says. The employees will also be paid time -and -a -half for working overtime or on a statutory holi- day. A starting child care worker will now earn S26 -W, while a shift leader makes 535,000. The union had agreed to a provincially -set wage increase of .5 per cera. However, the work- ers will receive retroactive pay to April 1, 19912). Those are some of the nicer things we have to say about the actions of some Pickering residents during the snow storm that hit this area last Thurs- day and Friday. Some townsfolk hurled obscenities, insults, chunk~ of ice and even shov- els at the Town's snowplow operators as the workers did what they're paid to do -- clear the white stuff off streets in the community. One resident even attacked a plow, knocking off the machine's side mirrors with a shovel. Most of those incidents occurred after plows pushed snow back into shovelled driveways, reports Pickering public works director Steve Vokes. Tlx. culprits were displaying "an unreasonable level of frustration," under- states Mr. Vokes. Many people called his department demanding staff "come get your snow" out of driveways, he says. "We didn't drop the snow ... We do not have the equipment, budget or manpower to clear residential driveways," he explains for anyone so thick they need it explained. But, those numbskulls aren't the people who most bother Mr. Vokes and ourselves. We're more disturbed by the individuals who called the works department faking medical emergencies to get their snow cleared more quickly. A number of phony claims of impending childbirths and chest pains were.made, he reports. "We are aware we were tricked. A couple of cases weree not genuine." Snow -clearing crews were immediately dispatched to the "emergencies", leaving other streets unplowed. "This type of thing worries us, because there could have been real emer- gencies somewhere else jeopardized by this action," says Mr. Vokes. In future, the Town will be checking such calls thoroughly and will press charges when the claims are untrue, he warns. We're in his corner. We'd gladly add aruxher label to those people who i11 future try such a selfish, shameful and stupid con job: convicts. • rgXF;yY•:S{Z°i 'q .;'."A,.: xl.ex .✓1;:SY"rfr,. w. - .••••.terra.tiilltl'8a1i3dJ•..`d—il►7 Snowplow operators just doing their job To the editor, In light of the recent snow- storm, I would like to thank the few people who gave us snow- plow operators the "thumbs up" after filling in their driveways when they had just spent the last three to four hours clearing them out Thanks also to the couple in the St. Martins subdivision who took us out of the cold into their home for hot coffee after our truck broke down, and to the gentleman on Rosebank Rd. north who also offered food and drink when we became stuck and needed a pull. Little did people know that as they arose from their nice, warm beds, most operators had already been working on the roads for seven hours, contending with parked or abandoned cars, poor visibility and little sleep. Many operators, again with limited sleep, went on to work 30 of the next 48 hours to make the roads safe for residents and emer- gency crews. So next time, we ask that when it be5omes necessary to plow in your driveway after a snowstorm, please understand that we are just doing our jobs. There's nowhere else for the snow to go. The pro- jectiles and insults hurled at us are really not necessary. Remember the saying about walking a mile in someone else's shoes. 11a4X-e(,Ouf cfa Valerie Nodwell, Pickering Don't bet on it, Mr. Wiseman To the editor, 'OPP Jim Wiseman should be reminded at every opportunity that he supported Ruth Grier and the IWA. After all, it is hard to stomach his "enlightenment" on the dump issue. In January he said, "Whether or not there is a site selected in the north end of my riding and whether it is on this list is not at issue here." "Further to that, to suggest that there are sites in the Rouge Valley, in the area designated as a provincial park, again betrays the fact that you (the Opposition) have not read the Interim Waste Authority's draft document that clearly states that there will be no sites selected within the designat- ed areas of the Rouge Valley Park... If Mr. Wiseman was a betting man, he would lose his shirt..not to mention his integrity. George Ashe, Pickering How do you feel about the Town's snow removal service? Asked in Ajax. Not veteran Pickering actor Gino Marrocco, that's for sure. He's been beat- en up, battered and bruised. And, in his most recent foray as a thespian, he was shot and killed. Relaxing at his Whites Road -area home, Marrocco chuckles that his long- time acting career, which has spanned five decades, has taken on a decidedly criminal twist of late. The father of two recently finished work on a number of television series, including episodes of the U.S.-based Top Cops show, CBC's Street Legal and TNT (with the infamous Mr. T). As we spoke, he was working on a new series called Judge, which dramatizes actual court cases and the events surrounding them. His latest project, filmed in and around Toronto, is an episode of NBC's Secret Service. In the upcoming episode called Murder for Hire, Marrocco plays Mickey, a small- time crook who unwittingly falls into a web of high-stakes counterfeiting which eventually leads to his demise. "(Mickey) claims to be an honest man, but he gets caught passing off counterfeit $100 bills," says Marrocco. "He's eventu- ally convicted and he becomes an infor- mant, helping police set a trap for the guy who gave him the (counterfeit) money. The secret service figures the only way to nail the big guy is to get (Mickey) to testi- fy against him." Despite police protection, Mickey and his wife are gunned down at their home after testifying in court against the coun- terfeiters. `I have died many times with one or two shots. But, this guy gets shot up a lot more than that.` "I have died many times with one or two shots," says Marrocco, reflecting on his many roles. "But, this guy gets shot up a lot more than that." However, there's somewhat of a happy ending to the episode, notes Marrocco. "Me killers are eventually shot". In the highly -popular Top Cops show, which dramatizes actual incidents of 0 Veteran Pickering actor Gino Marrocco plays a small-time criminal named Mickey in an episode of the U.S. drama Secret Service. Here, Mickey is in hospital after being shot by members of a counterfeiting ring. police heroism, Marrocco plays a good Samaritan who helps police apprehend a man who'd stabbed his sister and led police on a high-speed car chase. That particular episode, filmed in Toronto, will likely be seen in the next season of Top Cops, says 'Marrocco. "There are all kinds of antiques around. You can't beat the stone; you can't beat the neighbor- hood. They lr7ke the look of it." EFw Kung Fu: The Legend Continues brings Carradine back as the grandson and namesake of the fust Kwai Chang Caine, whom the actor portrayed in the original series. Ten child actors in shaven heads and robes, por- traying students of Carradine, were expected to join the star at the store for taping, according to Mr. MacLennan. He's appeared in movies such as Oklahoma Smugglers and Police Academy and in televi- sion shows like Cagney and Lacey, CTV's Counterstrike and Global Television's Missing Treasures. Marrocco says his life is in stark contrast to other people in the glam- orous jet set world of show business. And, he prefers it that way. He lives a quiet life with his wife Jacky, daughter Ashley and son Adam. And, while other actors have left Canada in search of the big - money parts in the U.S., Marrocco has been fortunate to work steadily in this country and earn a comfortable living. "I've been lucky that I've been able to balance both family life and an acting career. I don't associate with people in the business. I don't fit in. And I don't want to fit in," he says. ' r .iY .i•'• "•. .r.' ■ •ife's abreeze By FRANK PHILLIPS Special or some, a vacation is a time to let loose — to go wild trying new and adventurous activities. For others, it's a time to relax — a time to do nothing but release the pressures of everyday life. Vacationers looking to try the latter might consider adding Blowing Rock, North Carolina, to Weir holiday schedule. Located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, life in Blowing Rock is slow and peaceful. History is alive and flourishing. At the picturesque Moses Cone Estate, for example, located just north of Blowing Rock off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the most intense activity of the day is the sport of porch rocking. Visitors can grab one of the many rocking chairs available, settle in and enjoy the scenery. That's as high-pres- sure as it gets. The Manor House, which hous- es a craft centre, is part of the 3,500 -acre Moses H. Cone lemorial Park donated to the ational Park Service by the heirs of Moses H. Cone, a Greensboro industrialist. Others may want to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the streets of Blowing Rock. The small vil- lage dates back to the 1880s as a resort town. It was once called Summerville because of all the summer residents that used to come and spend their summers in the residents' homes, inns, etc. Today, a variety of boutiques, craft and antique stores line Main Street. Everything from clothing, dulcimers and fine crafts to gourmet ice cream and chocolates can be found here. Sixty -year-old Anne Mayo, a resident of Tarboro, N.C., visits Blowing Rock annually. She says it's her favorite part of the state. "It's unlike anywhere else in the mountains. It's a place of its own, the peacefulness and simplicity," she says. "The naturalness is love- ly. It hasn't changed. Main Street looks the same as it always has. - Blowing Rock gets its name from the Blowing Rock, a rock for- mation that uses air currents from the Johns River Gorge to return objects tossed from a high cliff. Popular legend has it that the rock formation got its name after an Indian brave fell from the rock, but was safely carried back to the top by air currents thanks to the prayers of an Indian princess. Blowing Rock is also home to Tweetsie Railroad, where during the warmer months a narrow-gauge steam locomotive carries passen- gers through mountain passes and a frontier village. About 15 miles south of Blowing Rock is Grandfather Mountain, a year-round attraction featuring a mile -high swinging Country music at its best.. , THE NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY, DECEMIYa 14 "924pAGE 13 'This mile -high swinging bridge connects two rocky peaks at the top of Grandfather Mountain located about 15 miles south of Blowing Rock, North Carolina. bridge connecting two rocky peaks.
