PICKERING - The Town should stop play-
ing the Christmas Grinch and refrain from
sending tax arrears notices during the holi-
days, a politician suggests.
Councillor Maurice Brenner expressed his
concern after at least one resident was notified
to pay up by Christmas Day or answer to a
collection agency.
The letter, with the name of the recipient
omitted, was delivered to politicians during
council's executive committee meeting Mon-
day. It was dated Dec. 10 and stated the tax-

PICKERING - The
huge snowstorm that para-

weekend cost Pickering
taxpayers at least
$100,000.
That was the pricetag
on cleanup operations,
director of public works
Steve Vokes told politi-
cians Monday. About
$22,000 of that was spent
on staff overtime, he said.
Mayor Wayne Anhurs
said other departments —
such as fire — also
incurred costs and would
be asked to report during a
staff meeting Thursday.
The Town would have
declared a storm emergen-

the town.
"We need to be a little more sensitive,"
suggests Mr'Brenner. "This is the last thing
people need. It's supposed to be a joyous
time."
The notice was a form letter generated by
computer and wasn't signed by staff, says Mr.
Brenner.
Town treasurer Jim Walls said he wasn't
personally aware of the notice. "The computer
must spew these things out all the time...]5
days is just a period of time. We're saying,
'Hey you don't have much time left'."
He adds, facetiously, "Tax collectors are
cold-hearted and ruthless."
But no one's going to be knocking on
doors looking for tax payments on Christmas
Day, Mr. Walls concedes. "We're not that
bad. Honestly."
Mr. Brenner says he's not blaming Mr.
Walls, who as tax collector, is considered to
have one of the hardest jobs in town. "Jim
Walls was not Ebeneezer Scrooge trying to
ruin someone's Christmas...If Jim doesn't do
his job, he's in a lot of trouble."

By-law' demands'smokers butt out d
By LINDA WINE
Suff Reporter
DURHAM - Non-smokers may soon
breathe a sigh of relief if stiff smoking reg-
ulations are adopted by municipalities here.
Durham Region's health services
department has put together a model
bylaw, to be considered by municipalities,
designed to protect non-smokers from the
dangers of second-hand tobacco smoke.
It tells smokers to butt out in hospitals
and health care facilities; day nurseries;
financial institutions; service lines; shop-
ping malls (except designated areas in food
courts); transit shelters; buses and taxis;
schools and their grounds; concert halls,
theatres, auditoriums, gymnasiums, muse-
ums or an galleries; lunch stands; wash-
rooms (other than in a private dwelling or
hotel); public areas at hairdressers, barber
shops and laundromats: and municipal
vehicles used by more than one person.
The model bylaw also suggests strict
regulations in restaurants, where patrons
could light up in just 30 per cent of the
available seating area. In bingo and billiard
halls and bowling alleys, smoking would
be permitted in 50 per cent of the premises.
Those numbers are "reflective" of the
community, notes public health nurse
Sandi Schmidt, pointing to a 1990 Ontario
health survey which determined 32 per
cent of Durham residents aged 12 and over
smoke.
Many of those restaurants not governed
by municipal bylaws offer non-smoking
sections "to cater to non-smokers," Ms.
Schmidt adds, but are not legally obligated
to do so.
While Ms. Schmidt "didn't get any neg-
ative impact from restaurants surveyed" on
the proposals, a number of other businesses
expressed "a legitimate concern," includ-
ing binge halls, "which attract a lot of

Still, she believes there's "a potential
they will attract non-smokers who now
avoid those places."
Each of the Region's eight municipali-
ties will look at the proposal and decide
whether to adopt it, in whole or in part, or
to ignore it altogether.
Councils may want to hold a public
forum, undertake a survey or set up a
standing committee before making their
decision, Ms. Schmidt suggests. Some
councillors may decide based on their
understanding of their "community's cli-
mate."
Those four places which already have
bylaws in place — Oshawa, Uxbridge,
Newcastle and Scugog — could accept the
even stiffer regulations suggested by the
Region. In Oshawa, for example, smoking
is now permitted in SO per cent of a restau-
rant's seating area and there are no regula-
tions in shopping malls or bowling alleys.
Durham's model is similar to bylaws
already in place in Toronto and Ottawa,
though a number of other cities were sur-
veyed, including Oshawa, Markham, Peter-
borough, Kingston and Etobicoke.
According to Durham's report, many
health authorities, including Health and
Welfare Canada, have confirmed second-
hand smoke causes such illnesses as heart
disease and lung cancer in otherwise
healthy non-smokers.
(Up to 25 per cent of lung cancer deaths
in non-smokers are related to second-hand
smoke, while an estimated 4,000 to 5,300
deaths in non-smokers from heart disease
and lung and other cancers are attributable
to second-hand smoke.)
Further, second-hand smoke aggravates
underlying illnesses such as asthma, certain
allergies and chronic heart or lung disor-
ders, especially in children.

The proposal is "trying to dictate to
people where and when they can do
what," criticizes Ajax's Roger Ander-
son, a smoker. "We (the government)
control their lives enough. We don't
have to get into their few bad habits."
Durham Region's health services
department has put together a model
bylaw, to be considered by Ajax, Pick-
ering and other municipalities,
designed to protect non-smokers from
the dangers of second-hand tobacco
smoke.
If approved in whole, it would pro-
hibit smoking in such places as hospi-
tals and health care facilities, laundro-
mats, municipal buildings, transit shel- Roger Anderson
ters and shopping malls (except in des-
ignated areas in food courts). It would
also force restaurants to restrict smoking to just 30 per
cent of its seating area.
Such a law "wouldn't hurt my business at all," pre-
dicts Pickering McGinnis Landing Restaurant owner
,Bob Pizer, whose eatery usually operates at about 74
per cent non-smoking.
He encourages large groups which usually accom-
But it would be difficult to strictly
1 enforce such a rule if there was a line-
up of patrons wanting tables in the
smoking section and the restaurant
wasn't full, Mr. Pizer notes. He
believes it would be better to accom-
modate them while not impinging on
smokers.
"I guarantee every other restaurant
would do the same" for fear of losing
business, he explains.
Meanwhile, the model bylaw is
applauded by the Canadian Cancer
Society. Aside from health risks asso-
ciated with second-hand smoke, non-
smokers find the habit annoying,
according to east -central district presi-
dent Mary Tillcock.
"People seem to be really upset
smoking areas in restaurants are so big and are often a
nicer pan of the restaurant," she notes. "And though
smoking isn't permitted in stores, smoke carries
through a mall," adds the society's representative on
the Council for a Tobacco -Free Durham Region.
"Someone who doesn't smoke notices the smell when
they take something home."

Guides; Scouts can still use schools for free
DURHAM - Boy Scouts and
Girl Guides have won a hard-earned
battle to continue using public
schools at no charge.
Throughout their fight, the two
groups warned Durham Board of
Education trustees a decision to
charge $50,000 annually in rental
fees for the community use of
schools would put their future "at
risk"
There are about 5,100 Scouts in
Durham and 6,200 Guides. Their
role in the community was the
deciding factor for many trustees,
including Brock's George
McLaughlin.
"The groups are sufficiently in
line with what we're trying to do
with students" to warrant an exemp-
tion, he argued.
During 1991 budget delibera-
tions, the board decided to increase
user fees for all groups renting
school space and changed the status
of the YMCA from a free user to a
non-profit user. At that time, the
Scouts and Guides maintained their
exempt status.
Last year, the board decided free
use of facilities would be given only
to those organizations which offer a
reciprocal agreement with the board.
For instance, a town would qualify
if it offered free or reduced rates to
the board on such town -owned facil-
ities as swimming pools and skating
rinks.
That issue almost cost Scouts
their exempt status, as trustees like
Whitby's Patricia Bowman criti-
cized them for being "unwilling to
negotiate" an agreement allowing
the board to use Camp Samac at no
charge. It spends about $2,700 there
each year.
But that camp is owned by the
Oshawa District Council of Boy
Scouts and not all units within
Durham, notes Scout leader Peter
Stevenson. That means each divi-
sion would he charged by the
Oshawa district whenever the board
used the camp.
Further, Scouts feared setting a
"precedent," worried a similar
agreement would be demanded by

the separate school board here,
which also rents Camp Samac, adds
Mr. Stevenson.
The Guides, however, are trying
to hammer out an agreement that
would allow the board to use its
Camp Adamar in Oshawa for free.
The board charges different fees
for different organizations. For
example, non-profit groups pay
$9.50 for use of an elementary
school gym, while commercial
groups are charged $11. Both are
levied an administration fee of $10,
as well as GS"f.
Despite increased charges, the
board is still subsidizing about two-
thirds of after-school operating
costs. That's why rental fees will
increase an additional 10 per cent
each year for the next three years.
At the end of that period, the board
should not be subsidizing those

Two sides, two
sets of rules
Durham Regional councillors continue to speak out both sides of
their mouths while governing their overburdened taxpayers.
In one breath, Durham Regional Council called on its regional
employees to accept a wage freeze to help ease the cash crunch it
faces in the coming year, despite the fact that councillors had already
voted themselves a 1.3 per cent salary increase each year for the next
three years.
In the next breath, councillors asked taxpayers to shoulder another
S40,000 a year to help pay for a benefits package that will provide a
"safety net" for politicians.
It speaks volumes for councillors' sense of self-worth that they feel
deserving of both a four -per -cent pay hike over three years and a new
benefits plan.
Surely these people recognize the fundamental contradiction
between telling one group there is no money in the till while they
shamelessly reach into it for themselves.
We can be sure the 1,300 regional employees who were asked to
accept a wage freeze have taken note of this connection. We can also
be sure they will use it as a bargaining chip in the future when the next
round of contract negotiations begin.
As Durham Regional Chairman Gary Herrema said earlier this
year. "We have to keep taxes down ("because) there are so many peo-
ple out of work... It's time we have to ask each other to hold the line."
Very well, chairman Herrema, we will heed your advice: hold the
line. When everyone is holding the line, it will be so much easier for
all of us to pull the same way.
But you too must be in there. pulling with the same strength and
conviction as anyone else.
Let's not get dumped on again
Get"volved,
To the editor.
On May 18. 1989 Durham
Region's chairman Gary Herrema
faced a hostile crowd of 1,500 at
Pickering's recreational complex
yelling above the clamor that
Whitevale's P1 proposed dump
site had his blessing. "We have to
find a place for your garbage," he
thundered. Yet, a mere three
years later he flatly condemned
the newly -formed IADP govern-
ment's BV A's announcement that
a number of York Region's farms
The News Advertiser wel-

.He is now on record as being

whose livelihood is at stake. what
was perfectly kosher re: the Liber-
al government and the P1 farmsite
for a dump project, is quite the
opposite when it comes to the pre-
sent day provincial government's
handling of what may well be
another dump for Pickering. The
political manure being plopped
out of Durham's headquarters
stinks worse than any dump. "We
may have to block the roads if
1s worth f i ght
ing for
Metro threatens to come into
Durham," says our two-faced
chairman. What is Durham doing
to protect Pickering which is con-
demned to be a "toilet bowl" for
everyone? Little wonder that it's
hard to attract good business.
Now Mr. Herrema shudders to
think what will happen if Picker-
ing resorts to civil disobedience
when all else fails. Well it's
Durham's own fault for allowing
the provincial and federal lands —
that have been in limbo — for
being just that. All this vacant
property should have been pro-
lected for beneficial things: now ii
may be too late.
1 believe Whitevale residents
when they say. "Even*morning
some bozo in the bureaucracv and
the government at one or more
levels gets up and asks "what neg-
ative thing can I put on the land
today`'"
Don't look for help from the
regional lcVCI of government: it's
a useless money waster, it
remained silent throughout Brock
West's turbulent history. Don't
expect sympathy from this inex-
perienced NDP socialist govern-
ment which falsely purports to
look out for the people. It already
lied about P1; the sooner they're
out the better for us all.
It is now time for the gloves to
come off and prepare for legal
battles. Visit the Mavor's Task
Force Info Shop, and get
involved. Are you proud to live in
Pickering? Believe me it's worth
fighting for. As an active PACT
founding member I appeal for
everyone in my town to fight for
what is right.

During council's executive

lost a day's pay because town

Santa's busy finding out
who's naughty and nice
By LINDA WHITE
Staff Reporter
AJAX-PICKERING - His
belly shakes as he laughs and a
broad smile decorates his face as
anxious youngsters scramble to
climb onto his lap. The very sight
of him sets hearts aflutter.
"They're overjoyed to see me,"
Santa Claus says modestly of
hundreds of kids who are on their
best behavior as they wait to chat
with the one man who really
knows if they've been bad or
good.
"Some of them are really
motor mouths," he laughs, his
eyes crinkling at the corners.
Dolls remain favorites for
girls, with Baby Wanna Walk and
Baby Wanna Talk top requests
this year, according to the man in
the know. Though Santa listens
intently to all wish lists, he
couldn't hide his feelings when
one tot asked for a doll which
comes with a flushable toilet -
Apartment
vacancies
on the rise
AJAX-PICKERING
Apartment vacancy rates here
rose to 7.3 per cent in October,
according to the Canadian
!Mortgage and Housing Corpo-
ration.
That means about seven of
every 100 privately -initiated
apartment units are vacant and
available for rent.
Privately -initiated apart-
ments are units without a
rental subsidy, while in pub-
licly -initiated apartments, ten-
ants receive help paying their
rent.
The October vacancy rate is
an increase over the April rate
of 5.8 per cent, reports CMHC
housing analyst Tom Valks.
The CMHC surveys rental
markets in April and October.
Vacancy rates for Uxbridge
are included with the figures
for Ajax and Pickering.
The increase, Mr. Valks
says, can be attributed to fewer
people moving to the area and
the affordability of homes.
"House prices have
declined and interest rates
have dropped. It's more attrac-
tive and more tenants are buy-
ing homes," Mr. Valks says.
Also adding to the vacancy
rate are the fact that young
people are living longer at
home with their parents, he
says.
There were no vacant bach-
elor apartments in the area in
October when average rent for
such a unit was $459. Vacancy
rate for one -bedroom apart-
ments was 1.6 per cent and the
average rent $692.
Some 2.3 per cent of two-
bedroom apartments were
unoccupied and units of those
size could be had for $750 a
month. Vacancy rate for three
bedrooms was 16.2 per cent
and average rent $822.
"Home ownership is quite a
competitor for (three-bed-
room) units," Mr. Valks says.
Santa Claus
"I told her straight out, 'That's
gross.' And when she told her
mother that's what I said, she
agreed with me," the man in the
red suit recalls.
When it comes to gifts for
boys, Rudolph and the gang will
be pulling a sleigh filled with Bat-
man, Robin and their friends;
Dick Tracy is "definitely out"
Santa's also received fewer
requests for computer games this
year, though that's due more to
tough economic times than to
popularity, he confides as he
straightens out his wire -rimmed
glasses.
Many of the kids who line up
to see the North Pole's favorite
resident are armed with "all kinds
of questions. Many want to know
where the reindeer are.
They're in park,' I tell them.
'They're back home where it's
nice and cold. After all, there's no
one here to look after them.
Kids are also concerned about
filling Santa's tummy when he
drops by their house on Christmas
Eve. "I tell them to leave carrot%
and apples for the reindeer and
chocolate chip cookies and milk
for me. I think I have a whole
dairy farm waiting for me," he
laughs.
But sometimes, the excitement
of visiting the big guy is just too
much for star -struck youngsters to
handle. "They hold onto their par-
ents and stop right in their tracks,"
Santa notes.
Well-intentioned parents are
sometimes to blame, he believes.
As they wait in line with their
children, who are usually decked
out in their finest, parents point to
Santa and "program" kids practis-
ing their wish lists.
When children hesitate before
hopping onto Santa's knee for a
chat and a photo, parents often
lose their patience because
they've been waiting in line.
"You couldn't get the kid to
laugh if you had a feather duster,"
Santa says, shaking his head sadly
and pulling at his cottony white
beard. "It tears the heart right out
of you."
Admittedly, listening to chil-
dren's wishes can be "stressful"
for the jolly fellow. "You don't
know what to expect," he con-
fides. "But if they cry the first
time and come back smiling the
second, you know you've cured
them."
While Santa is proud of his
popularity, he's mindful of the
"true meaning of Christmas. it's a
religious holiday," he says, admit-
ting annoyance at short forms.
"Xmas. Where's Christ? They've
taken him away. Santa believes in
the birth of Jesus Christ."
Santa's Village is open at the
Pickering Town Centre Monday
through Friday from l I a.m. to 3
p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m., Saturdays
from 10 am. to 3 p.m. and 4 to 8
p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to
3 p.m. and 4 to 5 P.M.
Santa will be there until Christ-
mas Eve. He'll be back to town
later that night, after checking his
list twice and filling his sleigh
with toys for good girls and boys.

Mission he1ps 'forgotten h_1d_i n'

AJAX-PICKERING - Children
of the dumps, digging for food or a
piece of clothing in their daily bat-
tle of survival. Children with
AIDS, outcast by family and neigh-
bors because of superstition and
misunderstanding.
Those are just some of the "for-
gotten children" the locally -admin-
istered Arms of Jesus Children's
Mission is reaching out to help.
They're dying of hunger, rejected
by parents, cast out into lonely
streets, victims of war and poverty.
They have little hope for the future.
"Fifty per cent of the world's
population is children. We're hop-
ing to give the world a better
future," says Dr. Sam Martin,
whose dream of establishing a mis-
sion grew out of a desire to help
needy children like those he met in
Africa several years ago.
"I felt really troubled," Dr. Mar-
tin recalls. "I realized there were
hundreds of other kids just like
them. I decided then to help those
kids no one else was helping."
Since then, services have been
established in Kenya, Uganda,
Zaire, the Dominican Republic,
Haiti, Ethiopia, Czechoslovakia.
Vietnam and Guyana Medical and
feeding programs, and health and
vocational training are among the
services provided, and some homes
for orphans have been established.
The mission also arranges child
sponsorship, which costs sponsors
$20 a month. All but $1 of that
contribution goes directly to help-
ing the child, according to Dr.
Baker, because the mission is run
solely by volunteers. Its newly -
opened Pickering office was fur-
nished through donations, he adds.
"You get a sense of helping
someone," admits Susan Baker,
who's been sponsoring a child in
Uganda for more than a year. "I
know she's getting fed and is going
to school," says the Pickering resi-
dent and mission volunteer who'll
soon travel with her family to work
in Kenya. Duties there include
making sure all requests for help
are legitimate.
"She's also getting the proper
medication," Mrs. Baker says of
Benneth, who is crippled from
polio and now has a wheelchair.
Mrs. Baker's three children also
benefit from the sponsorship.
"They realize how fortunate they
are to live in Canada. to have all
the food they need, ;hc - 11r .
These two youngsters were happy to participate in the recent
grand opening of the Arms of Jesus Children's Mission office in
Pickering. Renaldo Heard, left, was adopted by a Courtice couple
throt* the mission, while Matthew Whitley gives up his pocket
money to help needy children. Behind them is mission director

According to Dr. Martin, the
difference in children before and
after they've been sponsored is like
"night and day. They're kids
who've suddenly been given a
chance at life. Before, their bones
were sticking out and their stom-
achs were bloated from malnutri-
tion. Today, they're smiling and
healthy."
Though Dr. Martin is a pastor at
11
Bayfair Baptist Church in Picker-
ing, the mission is an independent
project and "will help kids irre-
spective of their race or religion.
"We feel our work is only start-
ing. It probably will never end,"
admits Dr. Martin. "Our aim is to
change the world one child at a
time.
"I've never had to beg for food
for my children. I've never had to
beg for blankets," he adds. "Help-
ing needy children is the most sat-
isfying thing in life. Every child
deserves a chance."
The mission centre is at 860
Brock Rd. S., Unit 3, Pickering. It
features an international craft and
gift shop, proceeds from which go
to the mission. It's open Mondays
through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4

spray one
step ' closer
By NORMAN NELSON
Durham Staff
DURHAM - Only one
detail needs to be cleared
up before Durham police
are provided with pepper
spray — money.
The police board has
approved its use, said
Deputy Chief Alex McMur-
ray. and all that's needed is
Durham Council to cough
up S25,000 in the 1993
budget.
One controversial issue
that still hasn't been cleared
up, however, is whether
officers should get the first
shot of the spray.
"There's two points of
view,- he said, "and one of
them is if the officer is
going to use it, he should be
given a little dusting for his
own benefit, to know what
the reaction is. But that's
not finalized either."
Constable Terry Ryan,
vice-president of the associ-
ation representing Durham
police, however, is not sure
a dusting in the face for
Durham cops is a good
idea.
"I think that's similar to
the statement, 'I think I
should be shot to see what
it would be like to be
shot'."
That issue aside, he said
the pepper spray is a good
idea if it can save an officer
from resorting to more
drastic alternatives, such as
the gun or nightstick.
Deputy Chief McMurra}
said the spray, an inflam-
matory agent from cayenne
pepper", temporarily inca-
pacitates the victim,
"It stings the eves and
the nose and the mouth and
causes coughing and gag-
ging and putting your hands
up to your face. It generally
slows you down ... and takes
any fight out of you. -
The Province approved
its use for the new year
(part of the same controver-
sial bill that requires police
to fill out reports every time
they draw a firearm).

Region reps hit taxpayers'
with $40,000 benefit deal
DURHAM - Taxpayers will
soon be hit with an annual bill of
S40,000 to cover a new benefits
package for their regional council-
lors.
The package, being touted as a
"safety net" to regional politicians
in Durham's eight municipalities,
has been okayed despite some
opposition.
"There's going to be hell to
pay," Pickering's Kip Van Kem-
pen predicted following last
week's decision. He criticized the
package's cost and timing, point-
ing to the Region's recent call for
a workers' wage freeze just
months after councillors gave
themselves a four per cent pay
hilae over the next three years.
He believes it's up to each
municipality to offer a benefits
package to its elected representa-
tives. The only Durham munici-
pality which doesn't offer cover-
age of any kind is Brock, whose
mayor Don Hadden says the plan
will "fill in the gaps and be a top -
up for some."
Ajax councillor Roger Ander-
son, an independent business
owner, believes the move "might
encourage" people who might not
otherwise run for office to seek
election. "We have an obligation
that people who do service their
constituents are covered," he
argued.
Whitby's Joe Drumm agreed.
"It's time council got into the 20th
century and (approved) this.
Those who come after us will be
the beneficiaries."

is effective Jan. 1, includes a drug

AJAX-PICKERING - Local
students are invited to express
themselves in an upcoming pro-
gram promoting human rights
issues.
Unity In Diversity — Stu-
dents Forum Program is a project
of the Social Development
Council of Ajax -Pickering, in
association with the Canadian
Human Rights Commission.
Students can develop their
own areas of special interest
through written, dramatic or
visual projects. During an
evening program to be held this
spring on a date not yet deter-
mined, projects will be dis-
•played.
The forum is not a competi-
tion or an achievement awards
program, but an open opportuni-
ty to express one's thoughts or
concerns. The purpose of Unity
in Diversity is to promote "a
greater understanding of human
rights issues" among students in
grades 9 to 13, says the Social
Development Council.
Parents and educators are
being encouraged to introduce
human rights issues in the home
or in the classroom, with the stu-
dents then developing their own
projects.
Deadline for submissions to
the forum is Feb. 28, 1993. Sub-
mission forms and general infor-
mation are available at the Social
Development Council office,
132A Commercial Ave., Ajax;
the Ajax Public Library, 65 Har-
wood Ave.; and at the Pickering
Central Library, One The
Esplanade.

my in a child's
DURHAM - Imagine not seeing
a smile on your children's faces
Christmas morning. Imagine
instead tears running down their
cheeks when they realize Santa
didn't stop at their house.
That's the type of Christmas
being faced by some area families,
victims of this lingering recession.
But, you can help put a smile on
a child, something yummy in their
tummy. All you need to do is make
a donation to one of several Christ-
mas drives being held by local
agencies, groups and businesses.
The News Advertiser will
attempt to print a list of such drives
as often as possible between now
and Dec. 25. If your company or
club is doing something to help the
less fortunate this Yuletide season,
call our news room at 683-5110.

Dreaming
of a green
Christmas
DURHAM - As we are all
aware, the festive season is
known to create more garbage
than usual. It is no wonder that
garbage bags line the streets after
Christmas when we take into
account the extra shopping, enter-
taining, special events, over-
packed products and gift wrap-
ping.
It's just as easy to think
'green' over the holiday season as
it is to be wasteful. For the
'reducing society', gift -giving
ideas such as theatre or sports
tickets, cloth tote bags, long dis-
tance phone certificates, a dona-
tion to your friend's favorite char-
ity, energy or water conservation
inventions, transit tokens, a fit-
ness and health membership, or
simply an hour or two of your
time, begin to emerge as ideal
suggestions for this special sea-
son.
Children and their parents
would probably appreciate the
gift of lessons such as music,
swimming, dance or gymnastics.
One suggestion that does not
require packaging or wrapping is
"Adopt an Animal" gift choice
from the Metro Toronto Zoo. Call
Olga at 392-9101 to receive an
Adopt An Animal brochure
which includes full program
details. This will please the spe-
cial animal -loving person in your
life.
The following gift -wrapping
ideas are always worth a mention
at this time of year. You can
make attractive gift bags from
unwanted draperies or clothing,
colored sections from the news-
paper, children's artwork, inside -
out potato chip bags, tea towels,
bath towels, pillowcases or old
wallpaper. When you receive
gifts, unwrap the presents careful-
ly so you can reuse the paper as
well as the ribbons and bows.

Thursday, Dec. 17 when approxi-
mately 60 volunteers plan to push
rolling clothes racks through the
two miles of Toronto's downtown
underground malls. They will
pick up pre -arranged donations of
merchandise from up to 400 par-
ticipating retail stores. Toronto
mayor June Rowlands will partic-
ipate in a brief ceremony when a
representative of the Under-
ground City presents this dona-
tion.
Windfall is a volunteer, non-
profit organization that locates
and collects new surplus clothing
from manufacturers and retail
outlets. These seasonal surplus,
production overruns, cancelled
orders and samples are now dis-
tributed free of charge to shelters
and social service agencies that
provide for people who seldom
have new clothes of their own.
Levi Strauss & Company says
of Windfall, "We applaud your
imagination and diligence in cre-
ating such a useful and cost-effec-
tive program."

Nigel Wilson honored as
' excellent ambassador'
AJAX - The town honored
one of its favorite sons on Mon-
day night.
Mayor Jim Witty presented
Nigel -Wilson a
plaque recognizing
his "outstanding
achievements" and
wishing him "con-
tinued success in
what promises to be
an outstanding
career."
Mr. Wilson, a
former minor lea-
guer in the Toronto
Blue Jays system, is
now a member of
the Florida Marlins,
a new National
League expansion team.
In November, "the Florida
Martins were smart enough to
select an Ajax resident" in the
expansion draft, Mr. Witty
noted.
Mr. Wilson is "an excellent
ambassador for our town," the
mayor added.
Mr. Wilson said, "I want to
thank everyone in Ajax.
They've been so supportive of
me. Everyone has been so great.
"This man (Mr.
Witty) has been
great. He's like a
second dad to me."
Plaques were also
presented to the Ajax
Spartans T -ball select
team for winning the
Ontario Provincial
`A' championships
and to the Ajax
senior men's baseball
team for capturing
the Ontario Baseball
Association Senior
`C' title.
Mr. Wilson helped hand out
those plaques.
The 6'1*, 185 -pound out-
fielder, who was the first plyer
selected by the Marlins in the
November expansion draft,
leaves for Florida on Feb. 15
with the Marlins' training camp
opening on Feb. 20.

AJAX-PICKERING
Back-to-back tournaments
proved to be a bit too much for
the Ajax -Pickering major
atom Raiders.
After a strong showing at a
Buffalo hockey tourney two
weeks ago, the Raiders were
outgunned in the Chingua-
cousy event on
the weekend,
winning one
game and los-
ing two, which D
eliminated
them from the playoff picture.
Ajax played its tournament
opener against Niagara Fails,
losing 2-1. Brad Virostek
scored the Ione goal, from
Garret Winder and Mike
Sauter.
Chris MacLeod earned a
well-deserved shutout in a 4-0
win over Barrie in the second
game. Scoring were Sauter
and Winder with one goal,
Brandon Ross with a goal and
an assist and Oliver Lopez
with a goal and two assists.
Other assists went to Jeff
Miles, Richard Baker, Chad
MacDonald and TJ. Kemp.
In a rough game with the
Toronto Red Wings that saw
the Toronto squad take numer-
ous penalties, the Raiders were
not able to capitalize on their
Powerplay opportunities and
were downed 4-2.
Winder and Vvostek tallied
a goal and an assist each with
Sauter contributing two
assists.

miserable for their LOSSA

Dunbarton also has a tourna-

Coach Bill Dalliday reports
the Dunbarton squad has had a
"fairly big" turnover heading
into this year's campaign. The
,
club lost seven of nine forwards,
two all-star defencemen and one
goalie from last season's cham-

Despite all the roster changes,
the club is off to a fast start,

something that comes as a big

Much of the scoring punch
has come from the line of Eric
Wheeler, Darryl Chilcott and
Mitch Shechan. But, all forwards

all lines are doing the job at both

Dalliday was worried the

AJAX - Over 100 years old
and standing proudly on the main
street of Pickering Village, the
former Pickering United Church
(545 Kingston Rd. W.) has played
a pivotal role in the spiritual life
of the Village over the years.
Erected in 1891 by a local con-
tractor named Stephen Gordon,
the brick structure was originally
known as St. Andrew's Presbyte-
rian Church. It was actually the
second church on the site, as the
Church of Scotland had construct-
ed an earlier stone church there in
1840, commonly referred to as the
`Auld Kirk'. Prior to the construc-
tion of St. Andrew's, the Presby-
terians had worshipped in an
equally elegant sanctuary on Old

AJAX LACAC
Kingston Rd., west of Church St.
that was later to become the Town
Hall, then St. Paul's Methodist
Church and ultimately demol-
ished in 1957 to make way for the
Village IGA.
The congregation of St.
Andrew's went through signifi-
cant changes during the 1920s
and 1930s. In 1925, Church
Union brought together the
Methodists, Congregationalists,
and two-thirds of the Presbyteri-
ans to form the United Church of
Canada. Consequently, St.
Andrew's Presbyterian Church
and St. Paul's Methodist Church
became, respectively, St.
Andrew's United and St. Paul's
United. While the two United
Church congregations continued
to exist separately for a few years,
vocal union was considered
inevitable as well as advantageous
and on Jan. 24, 1930 both congre-
gations decided overwhelmingly
in favor of unity. On March 28,
1930 the Consummation of Union
Service for the new Pickering
United Church was held. Rev-
erend J. Harold Stainton from
Courtice was the first minister,
serving until 1932.
Although the original plan was
to hold services on alternate
weeks in each building (St.
Andrew's and St. Paul's), this
proved to be rather inconvenient.
Beginning in 1937, services were
held every week in the former St.
Andrew's sanctuary. At this time,
the building was completely
redecorated, as it had suffered
somewhat during the years having
been used for public meetings,
plays, concerts, a club room and
even a gymnasium for a boy's
club.
In the early 1950s the church
lost its most striking architectural
feature. As Leslie Morley
describes so vividly in his History
of Pickering United Church 1925-
1975:
"During a violent summer
thunderstorm the steeple of the
church was struck by lightning.
The bolt struck with such force
that the wooden rafters were shat-
tered and twisted out of plumb.
The tower was roofed with slates
which were scattered over a wide
area. The damage was so exten-
sive as to make it hazardous in the
extreme and practically impossi-
ble to repair. The upper part of the
tower was removed later and a
metal cottage roof built replacing
the original beautiful tower. The
only casualties were the hundreds
of bats which lived in the belfry."
To accommodate its expanding
membership and in particular the
younger families, the congrega-
tion built a Christian Education
Centre behind the sanctuary in
1961, which provided a large
auditorium, kitchen, classrooms, a
chapel, church office and minis-
ter's study. However, the bur-
geoning growth of Ajax and Pick-
ering during the 1980s again
resulted in a clear realization that
the existing facilities were inade-
quate for the church's present
needs, let alone future ones. After
a great deal of study and soul-
searching, it was decided in early
1988 that the existing site was
inadequate and a larger property
would have to be found. The last
worship service at Pickering
Untied Church's Kingston Rd.
location was held on April 30,
1989 and the new building at 300
Church St. N. (adjacent to Picker-
ing High School) was completed
by September 1989, with the
building being dedicated on Sept.
24.
At the present time the former
sanctuary is being used as a dance
studio while the Christian Educa-
tion Centre to the rear is being
used for a Montessori School.
Immediately to the east of the
church, the historic house (built in
1872, it is an outstanding example
of the Ontario vernacular style) is
still used as a residence. Apart

AJAX-PICKERING - A nine-year-
old Ajax student has touched the
heart of a man who pokes fun at
politicians and finds humor in every-
day family life.
St. Patrick Catholic School student
Miguel Chaves has selected News
Advertiser cartoonist Steve Nease as
a "Canadian (who) makes us proud."
Miguel's Grade 4 class was given
that assignment after teacher Cathy
Murrant realized how much influence
Americans have on students here. She
wants them to "appreciate contribu-
tions made by Canadians."
But why does a man whose work
has featured a father learning the
house wasn't quiet because the kids
had gone out to play, but because the
Christmas catalogues had arrived,
draw the admiration of a Grade 4 stu-
dent?
For Miguel, the answer is simple.
"I chose you because your comic is
funny," he said in a letter to Mr.
Nease, who draws the editorial car-
toons and a comic strip which appear
in the News Advertiser.
The accolade came as a "surprise"
to Mr. Nease, whose weekly comic
strip PUD is based on real-life son
Benjamin (who happens to be the
same age as Miguel) and happenings
in the Nease household, which fea-
tures another two sons and a wife.
Is the cartoon true to life? "It's a
combination of personal experience
and artistic licence. There's some
exaggeration, but a lot is verbatim.
There's always something to draw
about," adds Mr. Nease. "A family
offers a limitless supply of ideas."
How does his family feel about
having its activities offered for public
viewing? `hey're used to it," Mr.
Nease says of the cartoon he's drawn
since 1984. `They don't see them in
advance, but they know I'm not going

to do anything drastic."
Any complaints? "Just one,
Mr.
Nease admits. "My wife wishes I would
change her clothes. But comic strip char-

acters never change their clothes," he
defends. "It's cartoon tradition."
And just where does the name
"PUD" come from? "It's a nickname
I gave Benjamin when he was first
bom," recalls Mr. Nease. "I heard it
in an old movie from the 1940s."
Mr. Nease points to his political
cartoons when he considers Miguel's
question on whether he likes living
in Canada.
"Being Canadian means I can do
the kind of political cartoons I do,"
he explains. "I can make fun of
Canada and Canadian things. After
all, it has its faults, as minor as they
may be compared to other countries.
But you couldn't do that in some
countries."
After travelling through Europe
and parts of the United States, Mr.
Nease recalls "how good it felt to
come home. Travelling opens your
eyes to a lot of things. I can't think
of another country I'd rather live.
"It means a peaceful existence and
showing tolerance to other people.
"Its health care is advanced and
though its system of government has
its flaws, it's democratic and rela-
tively responsive to the people."
Mr. Nease promises to write back
to his new Canadian friend.

g
You've sold your home, bought a new
one, and now face the nerve -straining
process of moving. You know you have a
lot do do before the possession date, but
you procrastinate and put everything off
until the last week.
Well, don't wait too long. Moving
doesn't have to be a painful experience if
you plan well in advance. By making a list
and not leaving everything until the iast
minute, you; move can be hassle -free.
For starters, once you know for sure that
the deal will go through, you should give
notice to your electric and gas companies
(and water and garbage companies
depending on where you live); disconrAct
the telephone; cut off cable TV service;
and end newspaper delivery and gardening
services. If you're moving to another city,
you'll also have to close your bank/charge
accour-ts and empty your sate -deposit box.
7 hen, you'll want to contact these
companies which will be cervi-in.g ;,cur
new proi&rty. By planning ahead, you
won't have to face unexpected surprises,
iike having no lights on ycut rr-)ving dad.
fo -o..,act the phone, gas and electric
co:apar.ies to find out how much rotice
they'll need to n. un tnC utilities ani
what deposits are requiroJ Also infon,:
the post office of y),t, i,ew adds -;s and
date of your mov and obtain 'Change of
Address" forms.
Packing Youiself
If you're only proving a short distar-ce
and you have strong back muscles, you
may decide to move yourself and make
several trips in your car If you have a lot
of' big nems, you may need to rent a truck,
dolly and furniture pads, and transport
smailer items to your car. As rates vary
between local movers, be sure to phone
several do-it-yourself moving companies
before choosing one. Also ensure that you
select the right -size truck. If in doubt, go
for the next larger size.
Whether you are moving 15 minutes
away or to another city, you can save a lot
of money by packing and loading the
rented truck yourself. But if' you are n.- 'i
organized, moving can become a
frustrating and frantic experience.
Before you start to park, make sure you
have --nough packi,tg aids, such as coxes,
roam padding, tiller paper, plastic bags,
,markers and heavy -dory tape. Small Saxes
should be ti:,`_ fol dishes ana books as
th(;y at- zLsier to lilt, wnile lamer canon;
should N- sav-,d .o: lig;ttcr i:ems, suc:: a,:
l mp shades, pt,lr,ws ana clothes
Componunt ,,art; arc! :;;nail hardware
shot<Id !)c sealud in p!zstic bags or
envelopes.
When packing dishes and glasses, wrap
each one scp3rat^ly using crushed
newspapers ane; plastic bags or dish towels
as fillers. You may want to wrap your
good china in tissue first tc avoid
imprinting; from the newsprint. More
important, be sure to write "Fragile" on
the top and sides of each box containing
delicate items, as well a; write the
contents of each box and the room to
which they belong on every box. This will
save you a lot of time when it comes time
to unload.
Mirn)rs and pictures can be packed
between layers of clothing, ,nattresscs or
foam padding, while old bl:tnkets should
be placed around furniture surfaces to
prevent scratching. When loading the
truck, place plants, deLcate items, and
items you think you'll need first when you
reach your new location (ie. food, a
broom, and a few dishes and pots) at the
back of the truck.
Hiring the Pros
The easier way, albeit more costly, is to
hire professional movers to handle the
move from start to finish. If you are
moving, say, more than 50 miles, you may
want to explore the costs between moving
your:;clf and hiring a moving company,
which will pack all your belongings into
boxes, load and unload the truck.
While charges for local moves may be
calculated on an hourly rate for two men
plus mileage, long distance moves may be
