"We're not preaching to any- body not to drink," says Durham Regional Police Sergeant Charlie Green. "But if you're going to drink anything. whether it's one drink or 10, stay away from the wheel of a vehicle." Two regional police force teams, devoted solely to the Reduce Impaired Driving Every- where program, are patrolling Durham until Jan. 10. Ontario Provincial Police will be pulling motorists over on Hwy. 401 ramps and will set up spot checks on other Provincial highways until Jan. 2. "We'll be checking as many cars as is physically possible,'" says Constable Gerry Smith of the OPP'S Whitby deta�hment, which Patrols Ajax and Pickenng. "Our RIDE program is a year-round effort, but during the festive sea- son there seems to be more of a temptation to have a few and take a chance behind the wheel. - If an officer suspects you've been drinking, you'll be asked to take a "portable breathalyscr" test called ALERT (Alcohol Level Evaluation Roadside Tester). If You refuse to comply, the conse- quences are "quite severe," Sgt. Green warns. A warning light will go off if you have 50 to 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millimetres of blood in the bloodstream, which could result in a 12 -hour driving suspension. The portable breathalyser tests were administered to more than 500 drivers and 108 motorists were given 12 -hour suspensions. A "sagging job market" in Durham Region is forecast by the tempoirary-help agency. It its latest Employment outlook Survey, 18 per cent of local companies expect staff cutbacks during the first three months of 1993. Only nine per cent of area employers expect to hire, while 70 per cent expect no change in current staffing levels. Three per cent reported being unsure of hiring plans. Man loses part of ear in attack AJAX - An Ajax man had a small portion of his left ear bitten off in a bizarre, unprovoked attack Tuesday night. Prior to the altercation In the stairwell, the attacker had been involved in a dispute with his girl- friend's family in another unit, says Constable Grimley. It also funds a num- ber of crisis services, including Apple House and Hostel Ser- vices. Counselling agencies which receive funds brought in by the United Way include Unemployed Help. Durham Mental Health and the Children's Aid Society. Residents are asked to send in a donation soon or to fill out an employee deduction form at work. Despite repeated reminders about the dan- gers of drinking and driving, some idiots continue to get behind the steer- 4ng wheel and turn their vehicle into a lethal weapon. "When are we going to learn?" asks Durham Regional Police Sergeant Charlie Green, as his force launches its Christmas RIDE program. "The consequences (of drinking and driving) are tragic for many people. Have not enough tears been shed for people who are injured and ki I led because of drinking and driving?" Apparently not. Last year, alcohol was involved in almost six per cent of the more than 8,000 accidents in Durham investigated by regional police. During the RIDE program last Christmas, Durham cops pulled over more than 37,(M vehicles and charged 67 motorist,, with drunk driving offences. Portable breathalyser tests were administered to more than 500 drivers and 108 motorists were given I 2 -hour suspensions. Over the past three years, OPP across the province have checked 865,000 vehicles. Almost 1,500 motorists were charged with drunk driv- ing or refusing to take a breathalyser test and another 2,800 were given I 2 -hour suspensions. Unfortunately, there is still a small percentage (of people) who don't understand" the dangers of driving drunk, says Sgt. Green. And, this time of the year is especially had.
