Volunteers knit to warm homeless AJAX-PICKERING - Volunteers here have knitted hundreds of warm goodies for Toronto -area street people. In a project organized by Pickering resident Johanne Pierce, boxes of mittens, hats and scarves have been delivered to Toronto hostels and soup kitchens four times this fall. "It's going great," says Mrs. Pierce of her knitting bee. "We've talked to (the recipients) and asked them, `What do you needT Their big thing right now is socks." Mrs. Pierce, a Canada Post letter carrier, was also able to give away two company jackets with logos removed, and hopes to be able to get more. The men and women who received the gifts, she says, "were really excited. They really appreciate it. They know us now." Seventy-five knitters are working with Mrs. Pierce. The drive is expected to slow down during Christmas, when knitters become commit- ted to other projects, but will pick up again after the holidays. Dealing with it will take joint action by business, labor, govern- ment and advocacy groups, Michelle Falardeau-Ramsay told about 75 members of the Ajax - Pickering Board of Trade at its monthly luncheon meeting Tues- day. Ms Falardeau-Ramsay said bosses are realizing employment equity is good for business. "If you deal with a diverse clientele, you must have a diverse employee base." The Employment Equity Act, passed by the federal government in 1986, is aimed at helping four groups — women, visible minori- ties, aboriginals and the disabled. On Friday, Nov. 27 and Thurs- day, Dec. 3, from 10 to 11:30 am. both days, students off for PD days can drop by the main branch of the Ajax Public Library to make Christmas crafts. Waterford Gate extension debated PICKERING - A planned extension of Waterford Gate con- necting Oakbum St. with Wood - view Ave. could be deleted from the town's official plan. Council's executive committee Monday decided that, instead of a collector road, it would rather have a pedestrian walkway that could be accessed by emergency vehicles. If ratified by council, the proposed official plan amendment will go through public hearings as part of the town's planning proce- dures. Residents in the area have expressed opposition to a collector road, citing worries over the safety of children. But both Pickering's planning and public works depart- ments recommend building the connection to facilitate traffic. The connector road was identified by consultants as desirable in previ- ous traffic studies. The town, which spent about $400,000 acquiring the property when it intended to have a devel- oper construct the roadway, could recoup the money by sewing some of the property for residential development, says mayor Wayne Ardwo. During Monday's meeting, the mayor called the roadway "unwar- ranted, unnecessary and unwant- ed". Councillor Eileen Higdon, however, argued it's "a very nec- essary community link." Opinion The true spirit of Christmas Christmas is supposed to be a time of great joy. The'recession threat- ens to make this Yuletide season one of despair for many. But, it need not be so bad, thanks to the efforts of the Salvation Army and other local agencies, church groups, clubs, businesses and the like which are collecting food, clothes and toys for needy area fami- lies. And. there are a lot of them out there. For example, Ajax -Pickering Salvation Army family services coordinator Joan Harry expects the Sally Ann to help about 600 families this Christmas, up approximately 15 per cent over last year. If you're not among the families who'll need help at Christmas, con- sider yourself fortunate. Then, please consider ways you could help the less fortunate. They're not lazy bums, sitting around on their duffs waiting for hand-outs. Most of them are like yourself, struggling to get by from day to day, trying to make ends meet. There's precious little separating many of them from the fortunates among us. Maybe they've already been handed their pink slips, perhaps their business has gone bankrupt, could be the bank's foreclosed on them. God forbid the same fate lie ahead for you. Count your blessings if you're still working, you have a roof over your head and you're able to put food on the table and clothes on your loved ones' backs. Manv area residents can't• not without help. Please think about helping out_ Maybe you could donate some non- perishable food, perhaps you realize your kids don't need all the gifts you've bought for them or maybe you could volunteer assistance with one of the many Christmas drives currently under way. Catch the true spirit of Christmas. Remember that it's better to give than to receive. And, you'll feel great about it too. Recreation facilities go NDIP:Lgnores the needs of many ahead as... One doesn't need a degree in economics to figure out where our financially -strapped provincial government is coming up with this kind of money. It works out to S1.4 million — S800,000 to Ajax and 5600,000 to Pickering. Implementation of the above ,programs would create more full- time jobs than will be available in the two new recreation facilities, once constriction is complete. Well over 50 per cent of resi- dents in these two towns will never make use of these new facilities, but will still pay handsomely for them in their taxes. Most seniors could care less about such facilities and many of the working poor, sin- gle mothers and those who are unemployed can only dream about buying skates and spending the kind of money that is required for their child to belong to a hockey team or skating club. That's triple their current value, and nine times their value only five years ago. In this, the first of a four-part series, we take a look at it* origins and basic structure of this remarkably popular investment. Mutual funds are big business in Canada. And they're growing fast. In fact, over the past decade, the value of Canada's mutual fund market has increased by an average of 28 percent each year - from $5 billion to more than $62 billion in assets - while the range of funds offered has grown from about 165 to more than 700. Mutual funds are also held by a substantially greater number of investors: today, there are some 5 million mutual fund accounts in Canada (about half of them RRSPs) -- almost 25 times as many as in the early 1980s. While this surge in popularity is a comparatively recent phenomenon, mutual funds have actually been around for more than 100 years. It all started in the late 1800s, when a group of Scottish investors came up with a very sensible idea: rather than invest their money individually, they would pod their resources in one large investment portfolio. and hire a professional manager to look after it The manager's eAwose would help them generate more profits and, because the portfolio would be large enough to hold a variety of different investments, there would be less risk of incurring a substantial loss if one of those investments declined in value. Even after deducting the manager's fee, they'd still come out ahead. Today's mutual funds (or 'investment funds', as they're sometimes called) operated on the same basic principle, albeit on a much larger scale. Typically, a fund is set up to act on behalf of the investors in the fund, using their money to buy and sell securities with a view to generating income and growth. In return for this service, the fund managers receive an annual fee, general calculated as a percentage of the fund's assets. Depending on the type of fund, this can range from 0.5 to 2.5 percent per annum. generally Most funds are divided into hits', with each unit representing a participation in the fund's net assets. This is what differentiates units from *shares" in a company; while share prices are set by what investors are willing to pay for them on the stock market, the value of a unit is determined only by the value of the fund's assets (also called the Net Asset Value. or NAV). To illustrate, let's say that the net asset value of a fund's portfolio is $100 million. If there are 10 million units outstanding (held by investors►, a little arithmetic tells us that the net asset value per unit is $10. Now lens say that the fund's net assets rise 12 percent in value over the course of a year, from $100 million to $112 million. If the management fee is one percent, we deduct $1.06 million from the fund's assets, calculated on average net assets, leaving a value of $110.9: million. Assuming the number of units remains constant at 10 million, the NAV per unit would be $11.09 for a net gain of 10.9 percent. In reality, of course, the number of units would change throughout the year as additional units are purchased and some redeemed. But regardless of how marry units were bought or sold ('redeemed"). it would make no difference to their value it the structure of the fund's portfolio remained unchanged. How much you may actually gain or your units will depend on the type of secunnes held by the fund, market conditions, the skill of the managers, and any fees payable. PICKERING - Anne -Karin Dabo is dancing her way to a dream. After only two years of ballet instruction, the 13 -year-old Pickering girl has been accepted for full-time study at the prestigious National Ballet School of Canada, where many apply but only the most talented are chosen. The achievement means she's said farewell to friends and teachers at William Dunbar Public School and moved into residence at the Toronto ballet school, living with her family only on weekends. "It took me awhile to get used to it," Anne-Karine admits. Nevertheless, "I love it It's fun. It's hard work but you get used to it" The three -and-a-hal f hours she spends in dance classes daily are "really good", she adds. "The way I'm training now is different than the way I was training before." The school invited her to join its full-time program of academics and ballet after she successfully auditioned for its summer school ses- sion earlier this year. "She was very, very lucky to get in," says Anne-Karine's first ballet teacher, Karen Davies of the Pickering School of Ballet "Usually they take them young." But, having a background in gymnastics meant Anne-Karine had the necessary suppleness to excel at ballet and, because Ms. Davies herself is a graduate of the well-known school, her teaching methods are similar. She's also aware of the qualities school officials look for in a student. Ms. Davies says, "1 think (Anne -Karin) has a good chance" of becoming a professional dancer. "She's got the drive and that's half the battle right there. As for drive and technical ability, she's got it" Anne-Karine says she's "always been interested in ballet I really like music and dancing." Now in Grade 8, she hopes to continue at the ballet school through until the end of Grade 12. "It's exciting. You're always busy. You have to be independent" Her family and friends, she says, "think it's great. They're happy I'm here." DURHAM - Theatre people are somewhat like nomads, wandering from group to group always look- ing for a new show in which to per- form. In spite of that, they are very Em close and very supportive of each other. For that reason I should like to offer my sincere condolences to Jill Milsom, a regular actress at Herongate and ' Scarborough. Jill lost her mother on opening night of Herongate Dinner Theatre's pro- duction of Pardon Me Prime Minister and was forced to leave the show and fly home to Ireland. The show must go on however and it did with Anne Ward stepping in with no notice and doing an absolutely amazing job in the role of Miss Frobisher. Jill has since returned from Ireland and, like a real trooper, stepped back into the role. I am sure she will perform it a 41W 'f"- with the skill and professionalism she has always shown. Well Herongate has returned to the type of show that audiences seem to love — British farce. Imm Herongate's cur- rent offering of Pardon Me Prime Minister by Edward Taylor and John Graham is one the finest of this genre. Somewhat similar to the TV series Yes Prime Minister, it deals with a British Prime Minister on the eve of budget day. The government is about to bring in excessive taxa- tion on gambling, bingo, permissive clubs, exotic dancers, etc. The instigator of this outrageous tax is chancellor of the exchequer (finance minister) the Right Hon. Hector Cramond, MP, a prudish teetotaler. To say more would only ruin the show. The set was well-designed and had the basic necessity of all farces —at lest four doors; one opens, one closes. Lighting was simple but effective. Costumes or lack of them were excellent, however I would have preferred to see the Prime Minister's assistant in a dark suit, more appropriate to somebody working at 10 Downing St. The casting was excellent and, although I had a real personal problem with some of the accents, it did not bother the audience. In fact they laughed so much it was sometimes hard to hear all the lines. Director Bill Granger is one of the finest farce directors I know and he has thrown everything he has into this show and it all works. Bev Nicholas as the Prime Minister steals the show. He is a rare mixture of John Cleese, Michael Palin and Groucho Marx, with excellent body language and use of facial expressions. George Waugh gave his usual stellar performance as the brusque Hector Cramond. I really enjoyed Daryl Marks, a Herongate new- comer, as Rodney Cam bell, the PM's assistant. But, as rsaid earli- er, a dark suit would add much to his character. Jo Hubbard, as the PM's wife, was hilarious as she roamed about the stage in a world of her own. Anita Vanden Eykel as Shirley Springer, Kelly Ould as Jane Rotherbrook and Bonnie Morrison as Dora Springer, round off the cast. This show runs Wednesday through Sunday until Dec.19. I gather it is almost sold out so book early and ask about the Sunday specials which are coming up soon. This show ends Dec. 19 but returns for one special New Year's Eve performance. There'll be an extra special menu, the show and a party with live band. What a way to see in the new year. Herongate is on Altona Rd. about eight kilometres north of Hwy. 2.
