' One dropout
one too many:
top educator
DURHAM - High school dropouts better not
mind asking, "Would you like fries with that,
sir?" because that's the kind of job they'd be
lucky to find.
That advice comes from OAC student Kevin
MacDonald, who shared his thoughts on why
students quit school during a panel discussion
at Tuesday's Mobilizing the Stakeholders Con-
ference at the Pickering Recreation Complex.
"That's a reality for many dropouts," said
the student of Oshawa's Eastdale Collegiate
and Vocational Institute. "Education is no
longer a luxury; it's a necessity."
Fellow Eastdale student Chad Langworth
agreed. He admitted dropping out of school
because he was bored and didn't think he could
catch up after skipping too many classes. Fur-
ther, a weekend job left him with "no time for
myself."
Several weeks after quitting school, Mr.
Langworth "got bored sitting around the house
and hanging around friends." He was also dis-
couraged by failed efforts to find a job. "It's
hard to find a job without experience or a
Grade 12 education... Even my dad turned me
down," he recalls.
Although "a lot of kids think it's not cool to
go back to school after dropping out," Mr.
Langworth returned and has rave reviews for a
co-op program which allows him to "meet peo-
ple and get experience at the same time."
The conference, hosted by the Durham
Industry/Education Council, promoted the
active cooperation of people in government,
business, industry, labor and community ager -
cies because all aro considered stakeholders in
educating the labor force.
According to Durham Board of Education
director Pauline Laing. both the public and sep-
aram boards bene work with students who want
to drop out and those "who are in school wish-
lout a sense of purpose."

Fight dumps, residents urged
• PICKERING - Residents here are being called on to "rise up in righteous
indignation'. against the possibility of another dump in Pickering.
The battle call was sounded at the town's civic complex shortly after it
was announced that four of five Durham candidate dump sites are here.
.Rise up in righteous indignation, and say 'this is enough, we don't want
anymore'" advised Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman, whose own MDP gov-
emment initiated the search for a Durham -only dump. Mr. Wiseman criu-
ci/AA the search process as being unfair to Pickering.
Maya Wayne Arthurs called on residents to join ranks with PACT, which
he said will aid council in official protest. There may also be legal action
taken, he said. "Our opposition remains firm, our team is in place...it's time to

A WORKMANSHIP! WORKMANSHIP1
WORKMANSHIP! Firstly, it takes a lot of skill
to get c rtairx to fall and drape properly.
Investing in a good curtain maker guided by
an Inlenor Decorator's custom design will
resuh in well -made window treatments that
will last beautifully for many years.
Secondly, generosity with faux: is thetfY to
fullness. An excellent RULE OF THUMB for
full bodied draperies is -3x the width' of the
window. For this look, investing in a large
quantity of fabric a a must.
However, d you don't need curtains that
close, you can cut back on the amount of
fabric required. For example: aIBa ool n
Valanceuses about 113 of the fabric needed
for a WORKABLE BALLOON.
Formal window treatments such as JHE
SWAG AND JABOT are often enhanced with
fringes• tassels, and cords. Top of the line
trimmings can cost almost as much as the
curtains themselves Also, formal cirta,ns
are ifffM lined. There is nothing worse than
light coming through the curtains if it is not

Since window treatments are the
'Architecture of a Room' they require the

Catholics pay to help
troubled school trustees
DURHAM - Marital, financial
and self-esteem concerns are
among the problems dealt with by
an employee assistance program
which Catholic trustees will tap
into.
The Durham Region Roman
Catholic Separate School Board
agreed Monday to participate in
the program, despite concern by
some trustees of the cost to tax-
payers.
"We are not employees of the
board. We are politicians," vice -
chair and Pickering trustee Mary
Zecchino told colleagues.
Each trustee will pay $12.13
for the program. The remainder of
the $36.38 annual price tag will
be picked up by taxpayers, bring-
ing the total cost to almost $440.
Pickering's Kevin Ashe was
disappointed the program wasn't
more widely received by trustees,
saying it was supposed to be a
"morale booster." He believes the
program is a "good investment"
because a "happy employee is a
good employee."
Other problems dealt with by
the program include family diffi-
culties, dealing with children and
parents, stress management,
divorce, separation and custody
issues, single parenting, sexual
concerns, alcohol and drug prob-
lems, legal advice, and coping
with illness.
The program is also offered to
board employees and their imme-
diate families. The board has
picked up two-thirds of its cost
and the employees or the union
representing them the remainder.

The news Friday that Pickering is still being considered as host to a
Durham -only dump shouldn't have come as a total surprise to anyone.
After all, we knew the provincial Interim Waste Authority was consider-
ing seven sites here as part of a long list of 17 locations in the Region.
But by keeping four Pickering locations on a short list of just five
possible sites, the IWA has virtually promised us another stinking, reek-
ing, polluting dump. Our chances of being "dumped on" yet again just
shot way up. The fairness of the dump -search process, in which virtual-
ly all Durham communities except Pickering escaped unscathed, must
be questioned. Once more, Pickering has sounded the battle cry.
Is it another case of the Not -In -My -Backyard syndrome?
Maybe, but so what? Pickering residents have already done their
share of hosting landfills, and they've already suffered at the hands of
the province by losing properties to expropriation. Pickering can be
excused for saying "enough", and it has nothing to be ashamed of in
doing so.
No,A, it's up to ever}, person living in the Town to make that objec-
tion with a strong, united voice. IWA chairman Waiter Pitman assured
the media Friday that, "It's not who you know or how much noise you
make" that matters to the IWA, but Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs dis-
agrees. "Walter Pitman may feel the community's voice won't be heard,
but I find that hard to believe," said the mayor at his own press confer-
ence. He also assured, "The IWA has focused on a community that's
proven itself to be an adversary. I think they've made a serious mistake."
All of the Pickering sites are already owned by the province. "They
alNays target provincial lands," says Lloyd Thomas, chairman of PACT.
knew they'd go after them again."
.%,1r. Thomas promises opposition to all Pickering sites. "We're going
to fight them all just as hard ... We're ready to go."
So what can you do to help? How can you join the fight?
PACT, town council and a mayor's -citizens' task force against dumps
xill be working together cooperatively. Get informed, and decide if you
want to get involved. Don't wait for your neighbor to do it for you. The
task force, with an information centre in the Pickering Town Centre, can
be reached at 831-9189.
Letters
To the editor.
olen_"A"guage misunderstood
Iam an elementary teacher
presently working in the
Durham public school sys-
tem_ I feel compelled to respond
to the letter from Ajax parent,
Jackie Boers, which was pub-
lished in your Oct. 30 issue. While
I can understand her concerns, I
think the major problem may be
lack of understanding.
Mrs. Boers suggests that some-
how the "Whole Language" pro-
gram is directed entirely by stu-
dents, with no guidelines and no
teacher control. This is hardly the
case. While student need is a
major factor in determining Lan-
guage Program content, academic
expectations are clearly set out in
Durham board guidelines and
many schools maintain individual
grade level checklists which track
the achievement of specific skills
acquired by each child.
Specific programming is deter-
inined by the classroom teacher
and there is considerable prepara-
tion in order to provide learning
activities which will accommodate
:- and develop the abilities of all stu-
dents in the class. This is often no,
easy task, as any class may span
several grade levels and include
students identified with learning
difficulties. It is crucial to the self-
esteem of each child that he/she
meet with success at his/her own
level if they wish to develop nec-
essary language skills. The teach-
er's aim is to assist each child to
achieve his/her highest potential.
In Durham, teachers are
encouraged to use the "Whole
Language" approach as the most
suitable means for meeting the
needs of all students. Many find
this method to be highly effective
and have developed Language
Units which revolve around a
theme or specific topic.
In order to help Mrs. Boers, and
other parents understand, it might
be easiest to outline one such unit
.of study.
In September, a junior level
class studied their cultural her-
itage. Language, arts, music, and
environmental studies were all
combined to support the common
themes of pride in our roots and
friendship between all students of
all cultures.
The students did direct their
own ares of study. Each one
selected one country of their own
cultural background. Parents and
grandparents became involved as
students questioned them about
their own family traditions and
experiences. A dialogue between
generations began.

ry, food, etc. and one extra topic
of individual personal interest.
One page of research on each
topic was set as the minimum
expectation. Students determined
the acceptable format of each
page, i.e. titled, underlined, at
least three paragraphs, etc.
Students also selected their
class spelling list, based on words
they needed to use in their
research. These words, like multi-
cultural, ethnic, acceptance, immi-
gration, descendant, etc. also
served to enrich and increase
vocabulary.
Weekly spelling/vocab tasks
usually resulted in a high accuracy
rate. Peer and parent editing of
major assignments also made stu-
dents aware of spelling errors.
Those which were common, such
as keeping an "e" when adding
"ing" were addressed in mini -
lessons for everyone's benefit.
Students read novels, based on
the themes of friendship and
acceptance, daily for 20 minutes.
Follow-up activities appropriate to
each novel were assigned, as well
as at-home projects connected to
each novel.

Students listened for 20 min-
utes each day to a novel about a
young native girl stranded on an
isolated island. They were able to
compare the experiences of char-
acters in their own novels and
experience in their lives with
those of Karana, the heroine of the
teacher -read novel.
Students wrote regularly in
their journals where they were
encouraged to write at length con-
cerning their personal interests
and experiences. Spelling, in this
instance, was not an issue, as per-
sonal expression was the main
goal.
Students brought in arti-
facts and souvenirs from
their various countries of
origin. These were enthusiastical-
ly explained and displayed. Stu-
dents also told stories they had
learned about experiences from
parents' or grandparents' child-
hoods. Many spoke at length,
without notes, because they were
excited about relating adventures
in their family history.
Students were encouraged to
share their discoveries within their
groups and to share resource
materials. Students willingly
exchanged ideas, books, informa-
tion, and computer discs in order
to help fellow class members

• Teachers are students'
' greatest asset': teen
FROM PAGE 1
She believes it's important to
"develop those skills which give
students the heart and confidence
to continue learning."
The public board began a stu-
dent retention program in 1988 at
.Dunbarton High School in Picker-
ing and Harwood Secondary
School in Ajax to target students
at risk of dropping out before
acquiring their diploma.
The program, which has since
been expanded, promotes the set-
ting of goals as well as career and
supportive counselling. Potential
dropouts "need someone to listen
to what their goals are and find
the building blocks to get them to
their goal," believes counsellor
Anna Clark.
"A career plan works as a
motivator for many," she
explains. "Until then, they haven't
found any meaning in school. It's
like a little carrot you wave in
front of their face before a math
exam or an English exam."
Mr. MacDonald believes it's
important to keep students "inter-
ested in school. We're expected to
sit quietly and listen to a teacher
lecture for an hour" before mov-
ing on to the next class.
Teachers, not funding, are a
student's "greatest asset," Mr.
MacDonald argued. "A teacher
can teach and a student won't
even know they're learning."
Though definitions of what a
dropout is vary across the country,
statistics indicate 30 per cent of
Canadian students quit school.
The Durham public board has a
dropout rate of about nine per
cent. It defines a dropout as every
student who's not in school at the
beginning and end of every con-
secutive year from age six until
achievement of a diploma.
The Durham Region Roman
Catholic Separate School Board
has a dropout rate of less than two
per cent. Director Earl Lagroix
says that's not a "true" statistic
since separate boards didn't
receive full funding until 1985.
Because of that, only those stu-
dents who wanted to graduate
would pay the cost of finishing
their education there, he noted.
"Even one student who drops
out is one too many," he said at
the conference.

Comic books sold faster than a speeding bullet
AJAX-PICKERING - It's a bird, it's a
plane, no it's someone rushing to buy a Super-
man comic.
Wednesday's death of the Man of Steel had
a super effect on the sales of his comic books.
Jan Truppe, owner of GNU Books in the
Ajax Plaza, sold out of 300 copies of the comic
on Wednesday, the first day it came out^ In the
comic, Superman is killed by Doomsday, a
creature who erupts from the ground.
"I could have used a thousand (copies),"
says Ms. Truppe. "Every person in the store
and every call was for Superman. I've never
seen anything like it in eight years."
One man called and offered $50 if someone
at the store would reserve him a copy, she says.
"We didn't do it."
She reports that people of all ages dropped
by the store, looking for the book. "'['hey were
from six or seven to 80. People came in saying
'my grandma wanted this'."
The direct distribution comic came in a
black plastic wrapper and sold for $2.95. The
newsstand copy, which doesn't have the wrap-
per, went for $1.50.
The death of Superman may be short-lived,
as his resurrection is expected within the year.
The Man of Steel's demise "is a marketing
ploy, I know. He'll be back," Ms. Truppe
believes.

The future looks bright for Michael O
"It's not just somebody else's problem, or
my bad dreams ... it can happen to anyone,"
says Michael Apostol of his battle with cancer.
Ten years ago a man or woman
with osteogenic sarcoma — a type
of bone cancer that often affects
active young men — would have
undoubtedly faced amputation.
Canada, familiar with this disease
due to Terry Fox's courageous
attempt to beat it, had not yet come
up with a cure or another effective
way to treat it. In 1992- however,
the future for people like Terry Fox
and 17 -year-old Michael Apostol is
looking much brighter indeed.
"My greatest fear was that
Michael would lose his arm," says
Letty Apostol, Michael's mother and
a registered nurse at Oshawa
General Hospital. "To me, it says
something about the advances of
medicine, that he didn't have to go
through that."
Michael was diagnosed with the
disease in September, 1991 after a
sore shoulder — something he fig-
ured was just a basketball related
injury — wouldn't heal.
An active player at Paul Dwyer
Catholic High School, Michael was
used to sports related injuries and
wasn't expecting anything out of the
ordinary to come out of the X-rays
his mother asked the doctor to order.
"At my age. I guess it's easy to
think that nothing could happen to
you, " he says. "I found out that it's
not just somebWy else's problem, or
my bad dreams, and my friends
found out, through me, that it can
happen to anyone."
Michael's treatment — three sets
of chemotherapy prior to bone trans-
plant surgery, followed by an addi-
tional three sets of chemotherapy —
made regular school attendance an
impossibility. Grade 11 was com-
pleted with the help of teachers,
tutors and lots of moral support.
"I had my surgery and my chemo
treatments done at Mount Sinai
Hospital in Toronto," says Michael.
"One day about 40 of my friends
came to visit all at once. There were
too many of us to fit in my room, so
we had to go to the lounge. We prob-
ably drove the nurses crazy."
Although the surgery was a com-
plete success — it was performed on
Dec. 4 and on Jan. 28, 1992,
Michael was pronounced in remis-
sion — the treatments were hard on
him.
"I was taking drugs to help me
keep food down, but I wasn't hungry
at all," he recalls. "1 was tired, and
grumpy. I lost all my hair, and on
one occasion I had to be rushed to
the hospital because a flu brought on
from the treatment just caused my
body to shutdown."
Michael recently returned to hos-
pital for surgery where doctors
removed his clavicle, but his recov-
ery has been quick and he's back at
school. As Letty says, "he's very
strong, that kid."
Despite her belief in his strength,
however, she still has fears.
"It's hard because I spend a lot of
time worrying about whether or not
the cancer will return," says Letty,
explaining that this type of cancer
often makes its second appearance
in the lungs. "Every time Michael
gets a chest cold and starts coughing,
I worry."
Michael, too, admits that fear of
getting it back is often on his mind.
"I try to peek at the X-rays in the
doctor's office every month, and
every once in a while I just start tak-
ing really deep breaths to see how
my lungs feel," he says.
But most of all, Michael just con-
centrates on his life.
"I am back at school every day
now, which is great," he says, adding
that in addition to playing recre-
ational basketball —competitive
play is out of the question, doctors
are still not sure if injuries could
bring back the problem — he also
Plays tennis and performs in the
seniorjazz band.
"Playing basketball on lunch
hours is the best_ My friends all
know I can't take the hard hits or lift
my arm really high, so they some-
times hang back and let me shoot
from the outside."
And to Michael, that seems like a
definite advantage.

Basketball, tennis and jazz are among the everyday things Michael
is doing since his cancer surgery.

Oshawa General Hospital anxious for new radiation facilities
By LINDA PRUMEN
Special to This Week
From the outside, Oshawa
General Hospital (OGH) appears
small. Located just north of the
intersection of Adelaide Ave. and
Simcoe St., it's easy to drive by
without really noticing the build-
ing. A look inside, however,
will change that. Small it may be,
but this is one hospital that more
than makes up for its size with its
dedication. Its cancer care unit is
no exception to the rule.
For a regional hospital, Oshawa
General Hospital has remarkably
well-equipped facilities for diag-
nosing and treating the disease. k
"We have all the surgical ser-
vices necessary for diagnosis and t
treatment,” says Dr. Hak Chiu, the
hospital's Hematologist and
Medical Oncologist. "And we t fig,
have a newly expanded
chemotherapy unit which is used
to treat cancer in a number of dif-
ferent ways."
In early cases, explains Dr.
Chiu, chemotherapy is adminis-
tered to prevent a re -occurrence of
the disease. In more advanced
cases, the object is to control and
possibly cure an already existing Q
condition.
"For our most advanced cases,
we are equipped to administer pal-
liative care," he says. "This
includes pain control and symp-
tom relief."
Despite the services already
available at the hospital, adminis-
trators are not content to simply
rest on their laurels. Radiation
treatment, says executive vice-
president Bill Lewis, is something
the hospital currently lacks — and
something it is vying very hard two

Part of the money raised stays
right here in Ajax and Pickering,
helping cancer patients and their
families. "The money that stays in
the community is spent on patient
services and education," says Ms.
Nazarko.
Those services include a new
program being introduced by the
South Durham Unit in January, or
sooner, for parents of cancer -
stricken children. Parents will be
able to talk to other parents whose
children have been diagnosed with
cancer, as well as gleaning insight
from parents who have gone
through the devastating experi-
ence.
The group is being launched
"because we're forever getting
calls from parents who have just
had a child diagnosed and they
want something close (to home),"
explains Ms. Nazarko. -T"hey want

With Cancer A Special ReDort
'Is hair that important?'
infilar_TIni
Marlene Pisani was angry.
She had just returned home from an afternoon
coffee and gab session with her sister Sandi
Gravelle — the sister whose chemotherapy treat-
ments had caused her to lose most of her hair,
the sister who people kept comparing to Sinead
O'Connor, the sister that the young teenage girls
at the coffee shop, busy french -braiding each
other's hair, were giggling and pointing at.
Not wanting to upset Sandi by mentioning it
to her, Marlene picked up a pen and vented her
anger in a letter to the editor.
"Come on people," she wrote. "Wake up! Is
hair that important? Next time you stare at some-
one because they don't look the way you think
they should, maybe it's because they have can-
cer!„
"I can't believe how angry I was when I
wrote that," says the 28 -year-old Oshawa resi-
dent. "I just had to get it out. It's hard enough to
live with this disease; people's ignorance and
insensitivity makes it even harder."
Marlene and her sister have been "living with
the disease" since June 5 when Sandi, 32, was
diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia —
a type of bone cancer that tends to affect older
men and women.
Bothered by a swollen foot and shin, Sandi
went to a walk -in -clinic on June 3. On June 5,
her family doctor admitted her to Oshawa
General, and the next morning, she was trans-
ferred to Princess Margaret in Toronto.
"It was the last thing I was expecting," she
recalls. "I had just given birth lo my fourth child,
and I had been tired a lot during the pregnancy
and had had some bad joint pain, but I never
thought of cancer."
Sandi admits she doesn't remember much of
the next few days — the days in which she
underwent a bone marrow aspiration to find out
what type of cancer she had and started
chemotherapy treatments.
"I vaguely remember asking people if I was
going to die, and no one would answer," she
says.
Sandi does remember July 6. A second bone
marrow aspiration indicated that she was in
remission and on the same day, she found out
that her sister — and best friend — was a perfect
match for a bone marrow transplant. The trans-
plant was scheduled to take place on Oct. 26 and
Sandi's chances of remaining clean jump from
15 to 85 per cent.
With all of that behind them, Sandi's hair loss
seemed like a minor problem.
"I was quite lucky," says Sandi. "I kept my
hair for a long time. It was only near the end of
July that it started falling out. We cut it really
short and I started to wear a wig"
It didn't take her long to decide that wigs and
scarfs weren't for her. ""They were uncomfort-
able, and I kept worrying about them falling
off," she says. "I didn't realize that people would
react so strangely to a woman with hardly any
hair."
Although the stares and questions — `did you
mean to cut it all off?' and 'what did you do that
forT — bothered Sandi at first, she says that the
ignorant comments aren't what bothered her
most.
–l'be constant reminder that something is
wrong is the worst thing," she says. "I am hying
to get on with a normal life, and all the questions
remind me that I have this disease. I think I am
beginning to understand how handicapped peo-
ple feel."

Sandi Gravelle says stares, a constant
reminder that something is wrong, are hard
to deal with.
"I know that people are curious about things
that they don't understand," adds Marlene. "But
curiosity doesn't give people the right to be rude.
If I could get one point across it would be not to
assume anything. Try to get more informed
before you just ask someone if they meant to cut
off all their hair."

Living With Cancer
Cancer services
extend to greater
Toronto area
Aside from the services and support groups offered through both the Canadian
Cancer Society and Oshawa General Hospital, men and women affected by cancer
in Durham Region do have access to a number of other programs in the Toronto
area.
Since many patients may be already making the trip for treatment, here are a few
other things to look up while you're in the city:
Cancer Coping Skills Training Program — Princess Margaret Hospital: Has been
teaching coping skills to cancer patients and their families for about 10 years.
Different types of training, including one-on-one sessions, seven -week sessions,
group sessions, or weekend seminars, are used primarily for research purposes,
though all have been shown to provide positive results. For information, contact

Survival -rates
have risen in-
most
cases
a• Despite the continuing fear of cancer, the statistics compiled by the Canadian
-ancer Society show that, in most cases, survival rates have risen. Comparing
statistics from 1968-1977 and 1978-1987, the following has been determined:
For males:
❑ The survival rate for cancer of the testes has risen from approximately 75 per
cent to 90 per cent.
❑ The survival rate for leukemia has risen from approximately 30 per cent to
approximately 40 per cent.
❑ The survival rate for melanoma has risen from approximately 70 per cent to
approximately 80 pzr cent.
For females:
❑ The survival rate for ovarian cancer has risen approximately 5 per cent.
❑ The survival rate for leukemia has risen approximately 10 per cent.
❑ The survival rate for stomach, colorectal and bladder cancer has risen approxi-
mately 5 per cent.
The survival rate for children with leukemia has increased even more dramatical-
ly. In 1960, 1 out of 25 children survived. In 1968, the number rose to three. By
1975, 13 survived. Today, 18 out of 25 children with leukemia survive.

PICKERING - The lyrics
scream, "Coming at you from the
suburbs. "
Are they necessary? pops to the
forefront.
YAP, or Yet Another Posse, lets
everyone know who listens to their
demo tape, or sees them live, that
they aren't just another city group
of rappers. They let people know
what they are about and who they
are. You may have seen them on
the Electric Circus dance show, but
maybe not.
It's music
with an attitude
If you missed them, these guys
are up and comers on the hard-core
rap scene. Sure, it's music with an
attitude, but these guys are good.
They challenge without insulting
with the music vocalist At Large
(no real names here) calls the punk
of the 90s.
"Rap is the middle-class
music," he says. "It's street -level
music. It's our way of expressing
ourselves."
And they are expressive.
Vocalist Billy Stick is at times best
described as out of control.
Members of the Pickering -based
band like to see the crowd doing a
version of the 20 -minute workout
when they're on stage.
They want people watching the
show to do anything but watch.
They want action. They want
movement. They want dancing.
And if they don't get it, they get
angry. It is not beneath them to
shout at a crowd that is a tad lazy.
You are forewarned.
YAP, featuring At Large, Billy
Stick and DJ Next Man played at
the Ozone in Oshawa recently.
Their alternative music, as At
Large calls it, finds the people who
are into the underground scene, not
those who go looking for it as the
latest "cool thing.,,
It makes the posse sick to see
:the pretenders at their shows (but
not ill enough to turn down their

cynical but do accomplish the
band's goals.
They even overcome the fact
they are a white band in a predomi-
nantly black scene.
"We had a lot of trouble in the
beginning," admits At Large. "But
if you take your music seriously
people will take you seriously.
We're not up there making a joke
of it. It makes it a little easier to be
accepted."
It appears the band is being wel-
,omed into the rap circle with
proverbial open arms. YAP recently
,siened a record deal with Epidemic
and is the only group on the Phat
K id label, a new rap division,
"They must like us," says At
Larne.
The band will have a new
release in 1993, but it's still lugging
around a demo tape. A very good
demo tape, at that.
"We're trying to get a message
across in every song we do," says
at Large.
"Hopefully, it won't be misinter-
preted," chips in Billy Stick.
They had a problem earlier, but
think those troubles are behind
them.
Check them out and find out for
yourself.

Aowmdose
antibiotics help
How women
can reduce infections
1- Drink lots of fluids,
especially cranberry juice, which
increases urine acidity and fights
bacteria. Empty your bladder
completely.
2. After a bowel movement, wipe
from front to back.
3. After intercourse, urinate soon
and take a bath rather than a
shower.
4. Diaphragms, douches,
deodorant sprays and tampons
can help cause infections.
*ho's counting: Since 1989. 326 medical articles have been
published on drug treatment for urinary tract infections.

The Medical Advisor
Q. I am a 34 -year-old woman,
and I have been experiencing up to
five urinary tract infections every
year. This year I was prescribed
daily use of low-dose antibiotics
and had no infections. How long
can I remain on these drugs?
A. Studies agree that women
who have more than two urinary
tract infections a year should con-
sider the use of low-dose antibi-
otics, although most studies report
on only short experiences of pre-
ventive therapy. The exception is a
study reported in February 1991 in
the journal Review of Infectious
Disease.
This study by Dr. Walter
Stamm, professor of medicine at
the University of Washington
School of Medicine, followed 51
women with recurrent infections
for nine years. They had 770 infec-
tions and came in for 2,819 clinic
visits. Use of low-dose antibiotics
reduced the rates of bladder infec-
tion and prevented kidney infec-
tion. The antibiotics, taken one at a
time, were: trimethoprim, taken at
a strength of 100 mg daily;
trimethoprim sulfamethozazoloe,
taken at a dose of one-half tablet
THE NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY, NiDVEpla®t 22,1!1'2 -PAGE► 25
urinary tract infections
daily; and nitrofurantoin, taken at
100 mg daily. All were equally
effective.
This study concluded that the
effectiveness of the antibiotics
remained constant for a five-year
period. No serious adverse reactions
were seen. After therapy was
stopped, the infection rates usually
returned to the level observed
before therapy started.
"As long as there are no side
effects, we believe a patient can
continue with low-dose antibiotics
for years," Stamm said in an inter-
view. "After two to three years of
therapy, a patient may consider
stopping all medication to see if
infections recur. At this time, there
are no known risks to staying on
low-dose antibiotics."
About 25 per cent to 35 per
cent of women between ages 20
and 40 have urinary tract infections.
Before the age of 50, men are
much less likely to have the infec-
tions than women; after 50, urinary
tract infections in men begin to rise
until they are almost equal with
women.

Bereaved parents can share grief
DURHAM - Parents who have
suffered the loss of a child are
invited to share their grief and
take an important step in returning
to the mainstream of life.
Bereaved Families of Ontario
will host a family information
night Nov. 26 which features a
panel discussion called The Death
of a Child in My Family. The
group will also show a film outlin-
ing the services it provides.
The organization "turned my
life around and made me feel nor-
mal again," says Susan Hendricks,
whose teenager was killed in a car
accident a year -and -a -half ago.
"Unless you've lost a child,
you don't know the terror and
awful stuff that goes through your
mind," admits the Newcastle resi-
dent. "People feel sorry for you
and love you, but they can't possi-

Bereaved Families is a self-

bereaved parents. Grief and
bereavement specialists help
develop ongoing programs and
train self-help group leaders.

such as the death of a newborn

Durham parents must now

Advertising Feature
Why advertise in
Focus on Business?
Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume will
find that being a part of the Focus on Business advertising feature
definitely has its advantages.
Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes - have
found that investment in Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser's Focus on
Business feature has generated extra 'phone calls that likely would not have
otherwise occurred. -
How do you get involved?
When a company makes a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the
page, it also receives a full feature story, complete with pictures.
The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in
depth its product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions, and p
,.even a historical overview.
Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is done by the
newspaper's staff: the ad design, story interview and writing, plus the
:taking of the photographs.
.All the business needs to do, is prepare for the increased sales volume.
For more information, call Janice at 683-5110. -
