They've decided to put the caps back on, and to instead hit the province where it hurts the most — in the pocketbook. Constable Dale Allan, president of the Durham Regional Police Association, says cops are being urged to use "utmost discretion" in issuing tickets for speeding and other minor provincial Traffic Act offences to protest proposed new rules on use of force. Chief Trevor McCagheny, concedes cops do have the right to use discretion. He says he'll take no immediate action other than to moni- tor it to make "absolute certain" public safety is not threat- ened. The chief says he's been reassured by the association that police are "also concerned about public safety." Association president Dale Allan confirmed Thursday that flagrant violators would still meet with the full force of the law. See COPS ... Pickering -Ajax Citizens Together (PACT) for the Environment has called a press conference for Nov. 16 to disclose findings by University of Toronto profes- sors hired by PACT. The gawp says it will "be chal- lenging Metro Toronto", owner of the landfill, "to account for the present unacceptable conditions at the dump site." PACT chairman Lloyd Thomas refused to reveal the `unacceptable conditions" prior to the press confer- ence. "We just can't. It's probably one of PACT's biggest announcements. Too many people are involved." The names of the university professors are also being withheld until the conference, but "they are very credible", Mr. Thomas assures. The most highly -publicized beef by Ontario cops has been the new use -of -force legislation requiring officers to file a report every time a gun is drawn. Mr. Pilkey has indicated the reports would only be used by the province to improve training programs. But Chief McCagherty, who chairs the training committee for the Ontario Associa- tion of Chiefs of Police, "can't see a training application. "I've never been approached as to what to do with the (use -of -force reports)." While agreeing with "full accountability for pointing a firearm", the chief doesn't agree cops are "needlessly and irresponsibly drawing handguns." He sees the reports his officers are now filling out as having "one purpose and one purpose only — to dissuade an officer from drawing a handgun." And that's why all the fuss is being made over a seemingly minor issue, he explains. Police think "this regulation is meant to dis- suade them from taking proper safety mea- sures on the streets." ...AJAX - An Ajax fattier of three has: been appointed by the separate school board to fill a post left open by the res- ignation of a trustee. They've lost one of the most important battles ever waged in the his- tory of business in Ontario. They are now second in command. Their employees have more power than they do, their government tells them how to run their busi- ness. Ontario's new labor legislation, passed last week, is a blow to Ontario business owners. And, when Ontario struggles, the whole coun- try feels its pain. The NDP put on its earplugs and paid back its favor to the unions for giving it power of the province in the last election. The government ignored pleas by businesses throughout the province not to pass the law. The businesses launched mail campaigns, radio, television and newspaper campaigns and one by one Chambers of Com- merce and other business representatives appeared before a committee to discuss their concerns about Bill 40. The-, were accused by the government of fearmongering. They were accused of spreading false information. So it came down to whose word was more reliable: government or business. The government chose itself. The businesses lost. Now, everyone will lose. The province will lose tax revenue from businesses that pick up and leave a socialist province, workers will lose their jobs when small business can't function under union dictatorship and if there's one small consolation, Bob Rae will lose his premier title in the next election because Ontarians have learned their lesson -- the hard way. The heartbeat of the country went for chant/ in the last election. Its residents wanted something different. They could soon see that difference -- in the form of a radical depar- ture out of the province by business owners. Editor I s mail ntader appauea Immediate health assessment makes sense To the editor, I am writing in response to an article which appeared in the Oct. 16 issue. The Scarborough Board of Education is asking Federal Minis- ters of Employment and Immigra- tion to bring forward new legisla- tion to ensure that all refugees undergo a complete medical assessment immediately upon arrival. As the policy stands now, these refugees are tested within 60 days of their arrival_ Some of these refugees are attending school before undergoing this medical assessment and are posing a health threat to our children. I am appalled at MP Rene Soetens' response to this issue. He is criticizing school boards getting involved in health issues. I don't believe the Scarborough board would have proposed this change The end of a legend To the editor, in the business she was often present with her hus- It is the end of a legend and it was with a deep band and was a great favorite with the patrons and sense of regret that I learned today that Penny- took a personal interest in the life and welfare of the worth's Department Store has undergone a change many young employees. of ownership. I didn't realize there was such a hierarchy as far as politicians go. May we remind you, Mr. Soetens, that you are a representative of the people. Your job is to get involved, that's why you have a seat in the House. It only makes sense to me that we want to curb any unwanted disease when it arrives in the country, immediately, not give it 60 days to spread itself around. These people are lucky to have refugee status in this country. Whether they have a contagious disease or not, they should be pro- nounced medically fit from the onset of their arrival and certainly prior to enrolling in our school programs. Our citizens come first and should be protected. My guess would be that the taxpayers are footing the bill for these medical assessments, so shouldn't we have a say in how our tax dollars are spent? What did it cost the taxpayers to test the entire population of two Scarbor- ough schools for tuberculosis after the children of a refugee family were found to be infected? How 604 R IPP, -N A'I'll AR0 1991 did the government compensate the parents of these children for the fright and worry they experi* enced? For these parents, there will always be a fear that it may happen again. I am a citizen of this country and before my children can start school I have to provide docu- mentation stating that they have been properly immunized. Open your ears and your mind Mr. Soetens and listen to what the people are telling you. There is obviously a problem now, that's why this issue has been raised. This could become a serious prob- lem and I for one would not hesi- tate to pull my children out of the school system if I felt this heath threat was serious enough. Also, consider the fact that most working mothers work har# at keeping their families healthy. We would hate to join the ranks of the unemployed because of the increased time off work to look after our sick children. So, Mr. Soetens, would you be so kind as to point us in the right direction. Enlighten us with your Political know-how as to how we can seriously address this issue. The OMB, responsible for hearing appeals on con- tentious planning matters, has refused a request to con- sider a school site separately from other development applications in the forest. The news has prompted Pick- ering mayor Wayne Arthurs to send "a strong message of disappointment" to the OMB on behalf of council. The Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board is in dire need of a new school in the area, mayor Arthurs pointed out to councillors Mon- day. He predicted the OMB's decision could mean the board will "wait another two or three years" for a Non-profithou PICKERING - Dozens of con- cerned residents fear a proposed non-profit housing project will disturb area wildlife and create traffic chaos. "Lots of Pickering is mostly just houses and buildings stuck together and this is bad," Wendy Tourout, 17, wrote in opposition to an eight -storey building pro- posed beside the Bay Ridges Plaza on the south side of Bayly St. between Liverpool Rd. and St. Council opens'' tback- PICKERING - Commit- tee -room meetings held prior to Monday night council ses- sions will now be open to the public, mayor Wayne Arthurs has decided. "There's no real need for the press or public to be there; there's nothing to be gained by it, but if there's questions of back -room deals, we might as well open the door," the mayor says. "If the public or press want to come, they're not going to learn anything." The 7 p.m. meetings deal With administrative items that are reflected in either the minutes or in subsequent motions brought forward in chambers, says mayor Arthurs. "We usually sit around the table and look at each other rather than make speeches." It's not intended that council deal with agenda items in the committee room, he adds. But during council's Nov. 2 meeting, councillor Kip Van Kempen complained that votes have "mysterious- ly changed from one meet- ing to another" and asked that recorded votes be allowed at all meetings where a quorum is present. Council has yet to vote on a revised bylaw to implement his request. school. Grant Andrews, the school board's associate direc- tor, says the OMB decision "is one of great con- cern ... we needed the school yesterday." How much longer the new school will be delayed, says Mr. Andrews, can't be predicted and will depend on the OMB. In a letter to solicitors for Bramalea Ltd., which owns most of the forest land and wants to build a sub- division on the site, the OMB said the school and other planning matters regarding the forest should be decided on together, and once all paperwork has been received "the board will schedule these matters promptly, given the lengthy history of the case." ''' sing Martin's Dr. "When I look out my window i want to see wildlife, not a pile of bricks," the Radom St. resident added. The Douglas Ravine lies to the cast of the proposed 88 -unit apart- ment building, while a condomini- um apartment and townhouse development lies to the south. The Canadian National Railway (CNR) rail corridor and Hwy. 401 lie across Bayly St. to the north. Access to the apartment build- ing, which would contain a mix of one, two and three-bedroom units, would be through the plaza park- ing lot. While a number of residents believe the volume of traffic in that area is already tcx> high, "this type of project has low trallic characteristics.- council .%as assured recently by the project proponent during a public infor- mation meeting. The land, owned by Benotor Investment Ltd., would be sold to Arcon Non -Profit Housing Corpo- ration if the project is approved. Three ratepayer associations have taken a stand against the pro- posal. More than 30 area residents have submitted individual letters voicing strong opposition to the project, while more than 75 signed a form letter against the plan. The proposal has received posi- tive response from the ministry of natural resources, the Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation and Authority, as well as Durham Region, the Durham Board of rducauon, GO Transit and CN'R. Trees toppled, out but wind storm not too serious AJAX-PICKERING - Power was knocked out, trees were top- pled and windows broken during Thursday night's wind storm. Gusts reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometres an hour felled trees, turned patio and balcony furniture into projectiles and knocked over curbside garbage pails, littering some streets with debris for garbage collectors doing their rounds Friday room- ing. Emergency services personnel expressed surprise the fierce winds didn't wreak more havoc than they did. There were no reports of serious injuries or severe damage. According to Durham Region- al Police Superintendent Don Martin, Ajax and Pickering sta- tions -received all kinds of minor calls" about downed wires and motion burglar alarms set off by blustering winds. Ontario Provincial Police were called to just one accident in the Durham area resulting from the storm. A car in Pon Perry was hit by a falling tree limb, resulting in minor injuries. A number of broken windows were reported to local glass repair companies. Dentists at the Goodman -Weiner office on Liv- erpool Rd. Pickering Hydro responded to calls from 10 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday morning. "We had a bu.s night, but nothing mayor or overwhelming." reports cus- tomer service supervisor George Armstrong. A 20 -minute power outage in the Hwy. ?-Liverpool Rd. arca is being blamed on a tree blowing into wires, Mr. Armstrong says. Trees falling on to Hydro lines and pulling down overhead wires made up the bulk of the incidents crews responded to. The Pickering fire department reported no calls of significance, but firefighters too were called out because of toppled trees. Power was knocked out to about 1.000 homes in northwest Ajax for about 30 minutes, says Ajax Hydro general manager Axel Starck. The outage occurred Mead the News three times each week Christmas n . "it was just excellent," Allyson Partridge says of her trip to Flori- da, put together by the Sunshine Foundation of Canada. The 1 1 -year-old was one of about 80 children from the Toronto and Kitchener -Waterloo areas who recently enjoyed the Sunshine Foundation's 16th Dreamlift to Disney. Two Ajar boys were also selected for the trip. The national charity works to fulfill the dreams of children aged three to 19 who have a lif-e-threat- ening or terminal illness or a severe physical disability. Allyson suffers from cerebral palsy, an impairment of muscular function and weakness of the limbs_ She learned about the foun- dation through Variety Village in Scarborough, where he undergoes physical therapy three times a week. "She applied for the trip in September and asked me every day if she received a response," her mom Sheila recalls. "Finally, she stopped asking. About two weeks before she left, she found out she had been accepted-" Allyson's excitement escalated in the days before the trip and even awakened her at 3 a.m. the day of' her departure, a full hour before her alarm was set to ring. A 727 -jet, loaded with children. medical staff and volunteers, left Toronto airport around 7 a.m. In Florida, the flight was met by members of the United States navy, who accompanied the group for the day. THE NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1S, IM -PAGE 13 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT My Fair Lady truly a delight to watch vtsme again and the Durham group which last year won so many awards for its production of A Little Night Music is back again and hoping to repeat with this year's entry of My Fair Lady (book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe). This perennial favorite is, of course, adapted from George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion. As is usual with Scarborough Music Theatre productions, there is a large Ajax and Pickering con- tingent involved. This time partic- ipating area residents are Coleen Fitzpatrick, Nancy Hall, Elspeth niSimpson, Jeremy Chadwick, Bon- e Davies. Karen -Anne Toogood and Eileen and Patrick O'Leary. I sincerely hope I have not missed anyone. If I have, apologies in advance. It really is unfortunate that, because of deadlines and short production runs, critics are fre- quently forced to review opening nights because there are always opening -night jitters for the cast and the minor technical problems that still have to ironed out. This was the case on opening night for this production. Techni- cally, the scene changes (and there are many) took far too long. The show which started at 8 p.m. did not finish until 11:30. This did include one intermission. Reliable sources now tell me that approximately 25 minutes have been knocked off the run- ning time. This has made it much re moacceptable to audiences who have given this talented troupe a standing ovation at every perfor- mance since. In fairness, the scene changes are complicated and very innova- tive and now handled with skill and dexterity by the whole com- pany other than some minor Local artisans at Country Decorating Show & Sale PICKERING - Three Pickering artisans will be plying their wares during the upcoming Country Art auction DURHAM - Tickets are still available for the Durham Region YMCA's 12th annual Gala Art Auction Friday, Nov. 20. So frequently in musicals members of the chorus are one- dimensional characters who sing and dance. Not in this case. Direc- tor Jackie Burke has made each of them fully develop a character and they have done so very success- fully. It is quite amusing to watch such a motley crew when they are cockneys and such a bunch of aristocrats in scenes such as the Ascot Gavotte and the Romanian embassy ball. The set and lighting were excellent and the costumes bright, colorful and authentic thanks to costume designer and researcher Karen -Anne Toogood of Ajax and costume coordinator Sara Phillips. The main difference between a drama or straight play as opposed to a musical is, of course, one director as opposed to artistic director, music director and chore- ographer and, unless all three work well together, there can be problems. Not in this case. They were obviously a very cohesive trio and it shows. Director Jackie Burke, musical director Anita .Moore and choreographer Coleen Lanki are to be praised for fine direction, absolutely beautiful DECORATING DREAMS yl o CORNNE SCfOL" lived"o.eowkor LIVING Root PLANNING TI'S Your living room is a place where you want to sit and relax and TALK- so a friendly atmosphere s the goal. PICKERING TOWN CENTRE 839-2507 PAGE 14 -THE NEWS ADVEWMER SUNDAY, NOVEMMER 15, 1992 Sports Angela Graham in a class by herself Dunbarton athlete still number one in cross-country in province By AL R1VETT Sports Reporter PICKERING - Dunbarton High School's Angela Graham is once again in a class by herself. The Grade 12 student raced against more than 200 of the province's fastest teenagers at the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) Cross -Country Championships at the Heart Lakc Conservation Area near Brampton last Saturday. Ranked third in the senior girls' division in the province prior to the race, Graham left little doubt about her ranking at the end of the 53 -kilometre event — she was number one. She crossed the finish line in a time of 19 minutes and 44 second, 22 seconds ahead of her nearest rival Christena Sullivan of Water- loo, who was ranked number -one going into the meet. The OFSAA win represents back-to-back cross-country cham- pionships for Graham, who won the junior girls' provincial title in 1991. Such a repeat is rare in high school athletics. Graham admits she was sur- prised to win the event, after a light training schedule in cross- country leading up to the provin- cial meet. LOEB Glendale 'AAA' novices unbeaten in last six contests AJAX-PICKERING - The Ajax -Pickering LOEB Glendale major novice Raiders hockey team extended its unbeaten string to six games with a win and a tic in its last two games. The Raiders played to a 2-2 tie against Markham and trounced the Central Ontario Wolves 10-0. Against second -place Markham, the Raiders twice came from behind to eventually earn the draw. Michael Calnan scored the first Raiders goal, tipping in a Ryan Morgan shot from the point. Andrew Hopkins scored the second Raiders goal, deflecting a Michael Perulli shot. AAA Ajax -Pickering demonstrated a well-balanced offence against Central as they outshot the MIDET6 Wolves 38-1. Adam Grayer and Jonathan Walsh each scored twice to lead the Raiders over the Wolves. Single markers went to Rocky Ruta, Tyler McGregor, Perulli, Hopkins, Dennis Colterman and Michael Carroll. Picking up assists were Ruta with two and singles to McGregor, Walsh, Mark Rogers, Hopkins, Calnan, Kevin Rogers, Scott Robinson and Sean Kostka. Brent Arscott picked up the shutout in goal. Ajax ringette juniors blank Richmond Hill .AJAX - The Ajax Home Hardware junior 'B' ringette team blanked Richmond Hill 7-0 in league play Nov. 8. Brenda McBride was the big shooter for Ajax with a four -goal game. Michelle Cooper, Laura Hampton and Kim McIntosh potted the other markers. Amber Kuciks, Dana leromkin, Michelle Bradstock, Lisa Surcon, Sarah McIlveen and Heather Walker all had assist„.Kuciks and Brad - stock put forth a fine defensive effort for Ajax. Angela Graham "Oh, I was very surprised to win. I wanted to finish in the top three. That was my goal. I didn't knew what to expect. I was very iurpriscd and very happy with the result. "I wasn't sure how I would do. I didn't have a lot of race experi- ence. I hadn't raced against run- ners of Christena's calibre. That's what made it a surprise to win it.” Graham says she wanted to stay close to Sullivan from the start and hope for a break later in the race. "I was going to followed Chris- tena from the start. I knew she was going to set the pace. She led for three-quarters of the race, then 1 left (made my move) with approx- imately a kilometre to go." Graham has been unbeatable in cross-country this year. She cap- tured both the Lake Ontario Sec- ondary School Athletics (LOSSA) and the Durham York Secondary Schools Athletic Association (DYSSAA) senior girls' cross- country titles at Oshawa's Trillium Valley Ski Resort last month. She had captured both LOSSA and DYSSAA cross-country titles last year en route to the provincial crown. Surprisingly. Graham admits cross-country is not her strongest running discipline. As a member of the Toronto Olympic Track Club, she's established herself as a middle distance runner, specializ- ing in the 800 and 1500 -metre events, while cross-country is a secondary pursuit. At last year's OFSAA Track and Field Championships, Graham w won both the 8(X) -metre and 1,500 metre events. Competing at the 1991 Junior nationals last summer, Graham finished third in the 800 metres and fourth in the 1,500 metres. "I've always looked on running cross-country as something for fun — a change," says Graham, who's enrolled in Dunbarton's High Per- formance Athlete program. The next stop on Graham's tour is the National Junior Cross -Coun- try Championships at Etobicokc's Centennial Park on Nov. 21. She'll be running for her track club against the nation's best cro,,s- country specialist,,.
