PICKERING - Ken and Barbi got dolled up
last weekend for an evening that was pure magic.
Pickering's Ken Poynter and Barbara Brill
tied the knot on Saturday. Then, Barbi untied
herself from a straightjacket later on Halloween,
somewhat appropriately the anniversary of the
death of master magician Harry Houdini.
You see, Ken's an illusionist and Barbi's his
assistant. They exchanged their vows in Bramp-
ton

Their private party Saturday wa
other weddings.
Missing were the traditional wedding
wardrobes. It wasn't tuxedos that made the
groom's attendants resemble penguins; it was the
bird beaks they wore. The bridal party was
resplendent in peacock headware and Zorro-type
maliks.
Dracula was there. So were a few Roman
Emperors. What a guest book.
The bride not only turned heads of wedding -
goers; she turned her own too — 360 degrees,
'ike Linda Blair in The Exorcist. And, the groom
wasn't satisfied with cutting into the wedding
cake: he cut into his wife as well — using three
swords as she crammed herself into a tinv box.
There were shooting stars, streamers and con-
fetti being sprayed from above as Ken and Barbi
exchanged vows. And a dance floor shrouded in
smok;. illuminated b�, red beacons and turned
ps�.�:c.:elic with blackhchts-

magical," says Barbi. "We made (the wed-
ding) as much a fairy talc as we could."
The special effects of the wedding start-
ed long before the ceremony. The invita-
tions were printed on transparent paper that
made the letters appear as if they were float -

Pickering Board of Trade.

ment believing that they were
going to listen to the people of
Ontario and engage in genuine

been consultation, we question
that it was genuine. We can't
help but feel that this govern-
ment has used this legislation
to pay its debt to organized
labor, to the detriment of the
citizens of Ontario."

and says the most important point
in the legislation is the creation of
a panel that will ease workers'
fears about technological changes
in the workplace.
The creation of labor unions
will still be determined by
employer-employee relations, Mr.
Wiseman adds.
The passage of Bill 40 follows
"the most extensive consultation
process in Ontario's history", says
provincial labor minister Bob
Mackenzie. "Today we have a
reformed law that is the product of
compromise and reason."
He says the bill is designed to
reduce conflict on picket lines,
streamline procedures in the col-
lective bargaining process and
promote "partnership" between
employees and employers.
"It's time to build partnerships
so that we can increase the cooper-
ation and innovation needed to
help our workplaces succeed and
grow in an increasingly competi-
tive environment," Mr. Mackenzie
says.

Axel Starck says all customers
with a billing history of eight
months or more will soon receive
a home energy audit package,
which contains a questionnaire.
When the completed forms are
returned to Ontario Hydro, an
audit will evaluate energy con-
sumption in each home and audit
results will be returned to each
participating home.
Ajax Hydro commission chair-
man Nancy Maxwell says people
will "have the power to make a
contribution to energy consump-
tion. It's a chance to get energy
bills under control."
She's hoping everyone will
complete the form and "make
energy consumption a part of the
home."
Ontario Hydro will return
audited forms within eight weeks
of receiving them. Energy saving
Lips will be provided with each
audited form.
High-energy use homes will
be eligible for a visit from an
Ajax Hydro representative, who
will demonstrate conservation
measures.

foot containers. The containers,
each holding 25 tonnes of compact-
ed solid waste, would nde double -
stacked on custom-tailored flat cars.
Unit trains carrying up to 100
containers of solid waste would be
transported to the abandoned
Adams Mine, a former ore -produc-
ing site, for disposal and/or recy-
cling.
Preliminary hyrdrogeological
studies indicate favorable condi-
tions exist for development of the
site, which has a capacity of 17.6
million tonnes.
Kirkland Lake and the surround-
ing communiucs of Englehart and
Larder Lake support the proposal,
bche� rng it could stimulate their
ailing economy. Part of the agree-
ment calls for shipping recyclable
products there to create industry.
"With our mining natural

ral resources dwindling, we need a
basis for economic di-crsifacabon,'•
states a letter from the mayors of'

Park.
Mr. Harris and other key players
in the proposal are critical of the
provincial New Democratic Party's
..refusal to use common sense" and
look at alwrnatives to landfill sites
within the Greater Toronto Area.
According to a ministry of the
environment leaflet distributed at
the meeting by Durti am West MPP
Jim Wiseman, shipping Metro's
waste to other places in the
province "does not solve the
garbage problem. It only moves it
out of sight„

at 17 sites in Durham for a mgional
dump, seven of them in Puckering.

It's also looking at sites to dump
Metro and York Regions' waste,
including one on the Pickering -
Markham townlinc. A short list of
those sites is expected sometime
next month.
Mayor Wayne Arthurs told pre-
senters Pickering council "want_~ to
explore all options (though) that
doesn't mean community groups
support the council."
Mr. Arthurs wasn't dismayed by
the small crowd, saying he reco '
nized "many familiar faces who rep-
resent 50 to 100 people," including
Lloyd Thomas, chairman of Picker-
ing -Ajax Citizens Together
(P.A.C.T.) for the Environment.
While the group believes
Durham's garbage problem must be
solved within its regional borders,
Mr. Thomas expressed concern
about the cost of shipping waste and
the "loss of revenue we would see"
if the plan was approved.
Planners estimate a system cost
of S40 to S50 a tonne at Kirkland
Lake, and another S100 a tonne
would be charged for tipping.
Metro charges S152 a tonne to
tip at Pickering's Brock West land-
fill site. As host, Durham enjoys a
rebate and pays S79 a tonne.
Pickering also receives a royalty
for each tonne dumped there and
sells methane gas extracted from the
site.
If elected, Mr. Harris promised
"there will be no dump without a
full (environmental assessment)."
When asked by Mr. Wiseman if he
would "restore Metro's right to
expropriate land," an option
removed by the NDP, Mr. Harris
criticized Queen's Park for giving
itself the right to expropriate land
where it wishes.

were sent in plastic tubes that
looked like magic wands.
That old black magic cast its
spell over Ken and Barbi a while
ago. They met at the grand open-
ing of De Boer's in the Pickering
Home and Design Centre in Jan-
uary of '89, where he worked as
an illusionist and she served as a
hostess. Presto!
"We saw each other and we
knew that was it," says Barbi.
"The marriage was inevitable,"
adds Ken. "When we first laid
eyes on each other, we knew we
were going to be together for the
rest of our lives.
"We had a connection of the
psyches," he says. "We were both
thinking the same things. We were
both saying the same things. It
was kinda scary."
Abracadabra. Ken and Barbi
started working together. He pro-
posed this past April Fool's Day,
which happens to be his birthday.
The two decided Halloween was
the day to get hitched, so obvious
was it that they're bewitched.
What's next for Ken and
Barbi? The partners in life and
partners in Poynter Productions
Magical Entertainment will per-
form at various corporate events
in the next little while.
Then, they take their act to
Harper's "A Little Night Magic"
dinner theatre in Toronto Nov. 23
to 28. After that, it's a a six-month
working honeymoon on board a
cruise ship that will take them

Winds of change

So, our MP doesn't think Tuesday's election in the U.S. is proof that the
populace has a desire for change.
Progressive Conservative MP Rene Soetens says, "If people were upset
with election officials, they didn't show it." Cue the theme song for the final
few campaign days of Independent candidate Ross Pero; -- a little Patsy
Cline ditty called Crazy.
Mr. Soetens notes, "The president was replaced, but in the Congress
and Senate, most were re-elected.
"I'm not sure you can really read anything into (the election results). I
don't read anything."
Mr. Soetens must read more poorly than ousted American Vice-Presi-
',mt Dan Quayle spells.
To suggest for a moment that the election of Democrat Bill Clinton as
S. president wasn't at least partly due to the public's desire for change
to he out of tune with the wants and needs of the people who are sup-
posed to be represented by Mr. Soetens and the rest of the gang on Parlia-
ment Hill.
It was a similar ignorance of the mood of the populace that got Presi-
Jcnt George Bush booted out of office. Mr. Bush believed his handling of
:orci ,n affairs -- particularly the Persian Gulf War -- would distract the
:.)ublic from his lack of action to try to boost the economy out of reces-
sion. He was wrong.
Does a similar fate face Primc Minister Mulroney and the remainder
of our representatives in Ottawa, who have also failed to take sufficient
measures to help us out of our financial woes while they spent their time
on constitutional reforms that the Canadian people nixed two weeks ago?
Mr. Soetens doesn't think so. But, esteemed American political scien-
tist Tem Madonna does. He's quoted in Thursday's Globe and Mail as
having told the acw York Times, "There's nothing very profound about
(thc U.S.) election. There's a massive pro -change vote." We agree.
If our MP, the Prime Minister and other incumbent politicians don't
begin to make changes in the way they serve the public, then it may well
be the people w ho'II be making the changes come next election.

It's time government stopped
funding such a narrow interest
group. I find it insulting to
women, who are just as diverse

to insinuate that we all think and
believe alike. All interest
groups, whether men's or
women's, should be self-sup-
porting. Then we would know
the truth about who represents

voted in favor of Bramalea. Some
councillors were quite bored, and
one had a hard time just staying
awake.
Why are they so arrogant? Are
they so sure that by the time the
next election comes everyone will
have forgotten that they voted in
favor of putting affordable hous-
ing within 250-300 metres of 10
million tonnes of bubbling

And it seems that those people
who need affordable housing the
most will be used as guinea pigs.
Metro Toronto, which owns the
Beare Road dump, and the devel-
oper will have a warning clause in
the agreement to purchase because
they want to stay clear of the
questionable outcome. At least
they are smart.
The BODY council, on the
other hand, in their big rush to res-
cue Bramalea, seems willing to let
Pickering taxpayers assume the
liability in future years if this
development turns out to be like
the McClure Cres. disaster
(radioactive soil) in Scarborough.
Then again, perhaps the BODY
council feels secure in their deci-

studies and reports by Bramalea's
experts reviewed and approved by
the Pickering planning depart-
ment.
How did they miss the fact that
Pinegrove Ave., a minor collector
road, is not 8.5 metres of pave-
ment in width? Did the surveyor
or "expert" have an elastic tape? I
measured iL Pinegrove Avenue is
6.1 metres wide. If the experts got
the information from Pickering
planning department, then 1 under-
stand.
This is the same planning
department which after "a thor-
ough study of the area" planned a
walkway through my bedroom.
Isn't it time Pickering planned
properly? It seems they have a tal-
ent for creating problems fust and
trying to solve them later.
This project and planning com-
pletely disregards the existing
community and the residents' con-
cerns which have been voiced so
often.
What Bmmalea's development
desperately needs is soil testing
for contaminants, not fast track
subdivision approval.

AJAX-PICKERING - Let's
talk about sex and relationships.
That's the theme of an upcom-
ing seminar being presented for
teens at the Barbara Black Youth
Centre.
Healthy sexuality, the preven-
tion of sexually transmitted dis-
eases, and birth control are among
the issues to be discussed at what
organizers hope will be the fust in
a series of meetings.
"We want teens to tell us what
their concerns are and will orga-
nize meetings around those
issues," says public health nurse
Pam Frisby of the meeting, which
will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10
from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Donna Guerra, the centre's
community development coordi-
nator, believes the meetings are
important. "We're trying to pro-
vide youths with adequate infor-
mation so they can become good
decision -makers.
"We believe they'll learn in a
supportive atmosphere. Young
people tend to hang onto misinfor-
mation," she adds. "We want them
to know what's fact and what's
fiction."
The centre recently held an

AIDS workshop which was "very
well attended" and hopes to con-
tinue addressing health issues.
Family and supportive coun-
selling is provided at no charge at
the centre, which receives funding
from the United Way of Ajax -
Pickering, as well as the ministry

"If you need someone to talk
to, we're here," Ms. Guerra says
of the confidential services pro-
vided to students, some of whom
are referred to the centre by the
Family Planning Clinic, the
YWCA and Children's Aid.
The centre also offers work-
shops on starting your own small
business. Held every Wednesday
from 7 to 8 p.m., the seminars
grew out of a need, Ms. Guerra
explains.
"Ninety-eight per cent of the
people who hang around here are
looking for work," she notes.
"They were unable to find
employment over the summer. By
presenting the steps they must go
through, we hope they can start
using their skills and knowledge
so they can have a business by
next summer."

hand to others are invited to call

DURHAM - A local private
school has gone to court to stop
the education ministry from dis-
criminating against religious
course credits.
"They want to stroke us with
the same brush as they do public
schools," says Ren Siebenga,
principal of Durham Christian
Assembly in Bowmanville.
Until last year, the school was
able to credit students for Grade 9
and Grade 10 Bible studies.
Now the ministry doesn't
accredit private schools for reli-
gious sallies, says Mr. Siebenga,
who claims this has been an ongo-
ing isstie since about 1978.
"We offered (the courses) and
from year to year we received
notice that we shouldn't be
,accredited for them, but they
didn't disallow them," he says.
Mr. Siebenga says it became a
"major issue" after 1987 when
graduating students needed 30
credits to receive their Ontario
Secondary Education Diploma.
Students at Durham Christian
Assembly needed 32.
He feels this practice is dis-
criminatory since Catholic high
schools have been able to issue
credits for two religious courses
since 1979.
"The biggest problem is they
really don't have a place for (reli-
gious private schools) in Ontario,"
says Mr. Siebenga. "The credit
issue is one thing, but we expect
and we anticipate in other areas
there will be disputes and prob-
lems."
Last year, 10 students left
Durham Christian Assembly with-
out their ministry diploma. Some
of those students are taking addi-
tional courses to pick up their
credits, says the principal.
Under the leadership of the
Ontario Alliance of Christian
Schools, Durham Christian filed
court action to gain the right to
give the same religious credits as
separate school boards.
Mr. Siebenga hopes to have a
decision by Christmas.

The 3,812 -square -foot
facility is at the corner of

credits to mature students study-
ing at G.L. Roberts Collegiate in
Oshawa and Bewmanville High
School.
Students studying electronics
technology, office administration
and business administration are
able to be credited towards their
high school diploma and towards
college courses.
The college has been offering
the program jointly at high
schools for about four years.
"It accelerates the process for
mature students," says Don
Michie, vice-president of post
secondary education at the col-

lege. "It gives them a taste of col-
lege level work."
Upon receiving their sec-
ondary school diploma, mature
students are able to enter the first
year of college with some credits
towards courses, or even enter
directly into a second -year pro-
gram such as office administra-
tion.
"It lightens their load in the
first year," says Mr. Michie,
especially for students who have
other responsibilities such as
children and jobs.
The college is looking to
expand to other high schools in
Durham region and to increase
the number of courses it offers.

The parade will travel east on

A service and wreath laying
ceremony will begin at 1:40

Following the service, the
parade will head back to the
Legion where an open house is

A public meeting of the Committee of the Whole of Council will be

The Ajax squad dominated early and never looked back.
Although the players were unfamiliar with each other, the team
worked well together. The teamwork showed on the game sheet as
10 different players scored for Ajax.
Scoring for Ajax were Matthew Smith, Adam Cyncora, Matt
Fawcett, Jeff Mitchell, Darren Livingstone, Ryan Martin, Andrew
Matheson, Zach McArthur, Ryan Alexander and Jeff Waines.

AJAX - The Ajax/Village LOEB Ajax Marketplace minor
novice select hockey team played its first-ever game in a new
league and were narrowly defeated 3-1 by North Toronto Nov. 1.
Without the benefit of a practice, the Ajacians played an out-
standing game in North York Select League play in North Toronto.
Ajax goaltender Alex Dobie was
superb, stopping three breakaways to
keep his team close.
David Desrocher scored the lone AJAX/
Ajax goal, assisted by Jesse Taylor. VILLAGE
Other contributors to the fine effort

AEG Sorting Systems Inc., located in Ajax, Ontario, supplies leading-
edge technology and systems to the postal automation market. To
support expanding activities in our Engineering Department, we require
skilled Intergraph CADD operators to develop 3-dimensional models
and create exploded view assembly drawings for our postal automation
equipment.
Applicants must have working experience on Intergraph Microstation
Version 4.0 and must be able to create 3-dimensional mechanical
machinery models from information supplied in the form of engineering
assembly and parts drawings. Only candidates with experience in,
Intergraph 3D modelling of machine parts will be considered for this
challenging and demanding project.
These are temporary positions for approximately 12 months.
