Pickering man
rescued from
fiery collision
on 401 in Ajax

AJAX-PICKERING - A Pickering man was
rescued from his burning vehicle by a passing
motorist after a three -car accident in Ajax late
Wednesday night.
Ontario Provincial Police credit Greg Green,
31, of Whitby, with pulling the 22 -year-old from
his pick-up truck following the crash in the west-
bound lanes of Hwy. 401 under the Harwood Ave.
overpass.
Police say the man was entering the westbound
lanes at Harwood around 10:45 p.m. The driver
lost control, struck a westbound car driven by o S4 -
year -old Scarborough man, then hit another west-
bound vehicle driven by a 31 -year-old Toronto
man.
The pick-up rolled over, came to rest on its side
and immediately caught fire.
Mr. Green stopped, ran to the pick-up and
found the passenger compartment filling with
smoke and flames. The driver was struggling to get
out of the vehicle. Mr. Green picked up a piece of
metal, broke the windshield and pulled the
motorist free.
-The driver had hair on his head singed, while
Mr. Green had hair on his atm burned and he suf-
fered a lacerated forger.
The highway was closed for an hour following
the accident and traffic was re-routed.
Durham Regional Police and the Ajax Fire
Department also responded to the accident.
The Pickering man has been charged with
impaired driving and driving with more than the
legal amount of alcohol in his blood.

Grants help build
recreation facilities
AJAX-PICKERING - Provincial grants totalling
SIA million have been awarded to the two towns to
build recreational facilities.
Ajax will receive $800,000 to help build a commu-
nity centre in north Ajax, while Pickering will get
S600,000 for a new ice pad at the recreation complex.
Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman made the
announcements Monday night as he addressed Ajax
and Pickering councils.
The north Ajax community centre will be built at
the corner of Westney Rd. and Magill Dr.
While town council hasn't officially approved the
community centre, it has supported the project.
It will be built in two phases, with the first costing
about S6 million.
The first phase will include a leisure -style swim-
ming pool, lobby and change rooms.
The entire centre will cost about S10 million. The
remaining funding for the project will come from lot
levies and debentures.
The ice pad for the Pickering Recreation Complex
will cost about S3.5 million. A sod -turning ceremony
will be held soon and the new pad will open by the
fall of 1993.
The grant money for both projects is part of the
Ontario ministry of tourism and recreation's Fresh
Approach: Recreation Grants for Ontario Communi-
ties program.

And, like prisoners of war, many of those women are tortured.
"Women are showing up at hospitals and shelters with cigarette burns on
their bodies, with welts, bruises and lacerations," Mr. Behrens noted.
Further, women are not finding justice in courts and are "forced to live
in a state of house arrest and abide by a curfew. They stay in their homes
for fear of being attacked at night," added Mr. Behrens.
Violence against women isn't just physical. It can also be verbal, emo-
tional and psychological. Mr. Behrens pointed to dozens of derogatory
terms used to describe women and questioned why sexually -promiscuous
women are called "sluts," while their male counterparts are "studs".
He encouraged students to "treat women with respect" and noted sex-
ist jokes "hurt just like racist jokes hurt."
Put downs can be more subtle, according to Mr. Behrens. For exam-
ple, an aggressive man may be praised as a "go-getter", while a woman
"doesn't know when to stop." A coach may encourage a team to play
harder by telling them, "You're
playing like girls."

Further, it sends a message to
men that "women like to be in a
submissive position," Mr.
Behrens argued. "When women

n For police, for drivers and for crowded courts, there is some good news
in the most recent statistics on impaired driving.
E For the overburdened courts, the good news is that the number of
impaired driving arrests. after increasing steadily for years, declined in
t 1991.
For police that is good news too -- because it means that their enforce-
ment police, and the increased penalties being given out by judges, are
catching the imaginations of drivers.
But it is good news most of all for sober drivers, who have that much
less to fear while driving home late at night.
Despite a beefed-up, full -year RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Every-
where, roadside program, the number of arrests b% Durham Regional
I Police dropped from 1,712 in 1990 to 1,488 in 1991.
i In the years before 1990, when both enforcement and arrests were
growing, it was impossible to tell whether the problem was being reduced.
The 1991 figures make it clear: progress is being rnade.
I �\c don't know yet whrthcr it is the threat of the stick of large fines

This week. Crime Prevention Week, has been devoted by police to
relnforcing the message, because although a start has been made, the car-
nage on our roads due to irresponsible consumption of alcohol is still hor-
rendous.
Police estimate that half of all deaths on the road involve alcohol. It's
worth repeating over and over again until it finalIN takes hold in every-
one's mind: don't drink and drive.

was opened, someone in their
wisdom put up four-way stop
signs.
Shortly afterwards, it was
mentioned that the matter had
come up at council. It seemed to
be generally considered that the
stop signs should be on Townline
only. One councillor suggested
traffic lights. As they couldn't all
agree it was decided that a count
should be taken. That was about
six months ago, no change to

hand turn from Steeles to
Townline on my bike
around 4 p.m. It is usual
for me to pass 10 or more
cars waiting their turn at
the stop sign. Recently at
5:15 p.m, I passed 30 cars
waiting their turn. While
on my way to Finch I saw
only two cars. One had
turned off from Steeles and
the other was north bound.
If a 78 -year-old cyclist
can pass 30 motorists in
hurry to get home from
work, something must be
wrong.
It is time someone in
council or in the works
department woke up.

Watching Pickering council is like
watching a small child trying to put the
square block into the round opening.
Vow that we all have agreed that
ves, Pickering needs another firchall,
You can't seem to agree on a location.
There is only one thing more frustrating
than Pickering council deciding where
to build the new firehall, and that's
Picking the family Christmas tree.
My suggestion to you people is this:
find the best possible location, build the
building and fully staff it. You people
move slower than a soap opera.
Please remember, you're playing
with the lives of the people who pay
your wages.

How to Become a "Green" Homeowner
Growing concern about the future of our planet is leading more and more
homeowners to think "green". In fact. many Canadians are choosing en-
vironmentally sound alternatives to the products they use in and around their
homes.
If you're unsure whether you're a "green" consumer or not, ask yourself the
following questions. Do you recycle tins and glass bottles and jars each week?
Do you try to avoid purchasing products that are over -packaged? Do you try to
use natural -based, environmentally safe products in and around your home?
If you answered "no" to most of these questions, you might want to consider
changing some of your practices. You can get your whole family involved in
thinking "green." And by teaching youngsters to reduce, reuse and recycle,
you'll he helping them to ensure a healthier planet for the future.
There are numerous things you and your family can do to help make a
difference. Most municipalities now provide homeowners with blue boxes so
that items like tins, bottles, jars, newspapers and cardboard can be picked up on
a weekly basis for recycling. By utilizing your blue box you can deter a
tremendous amount of waste per year from local landfills. Lf you don't have a
box, contact your municipal office to see about obtaining one.
Composting is a practice that helps both the environment and your garden.
Home composting helps divert a lot of waste from landfill sites and, over time,
you end up with a dark, rich soil booster which you can use as an alternative to
chemical fertilizers.
When shopping, there are many things you can do to reduce waste
production- For instance, avoid, buying disposable products like paper plates
and plastic utensils, and avoid choosing items that are over -packaged. It's also
preferable to try and buy things which you can re -use over and over again -- like
washable cloths and sponges instead of paper towels.
When and where possible, buy in bulk and use refillable containers. In fact,
some stores now have large dispensers which you can use to refill containers.
Most supermarkets also sell pouches of materials which can be used to fill

source of protection.
According to national crime prevention
experts, homes that look lived-in are less likely
to be burglarized. Following are some practical
tips from home safety experts at First Alert.
These tips are intended to make your home
less attractive to thieves.
♦ Be sure your home's exterior is well lit.
Replace burned out lightbulbs over doorways,
garage and yard immediately. Consider replac-
ing standard outdoor lights with motion -sens-
ing floodlights that turn on whenever anyone
approaches. Not only do these floodlights deter
1priminals, they also provide a light whenever
you or guests arrive home.
♦ Don't give thieves a chance to get into your
house unobserved. Trim any shrubs or trees
that hide doors or windows. And avoid giving
burglars a leg up to second -storey windows by
cutting back tree limbs.
♦ Buy home lighting security timers for your
home. Lighting timers are an easy way to cre-
ate the appearance that someone is at home.
They can also increase your personal safety.
Set timers to turn on lights before you get
home in the evening, to avoid coming home to
a dark house. Some models allow you to pro-
gram different on/off times for each day of the
week, to fit your family's changing schedule.
10 Keep your yard well-maintained to reinforce
the impression that you're at home - or at
least in town. Store ladders and tools inside
your garage or basement when you aren't
using them so they aren't stolen, or used to

"Most people only think about burglar-
proofing their homes when they are going out of
town," explains Rich Timmons, director of mar-
keting for First Alert. "People should be aware
of the need to take the same types of simple pre-
cautions every day." For people who are plan-
ning to be away on vacation or business,
Timmons offers some additional tips for deter-
ring burglars when you're away from home:
♦ Rather than stopping mail and deliveries,
ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up
mail, newspaper and packages daily.
♦ Hide empty garbage cans in the garage.
Keep garage door closed and locked.
♦ if you will be gone for a long time, ask a
neighbor to keep your yard maintained.
♦ Leave shades and blinds in their normal
positions.
♦ Put home lighting security timers on several
lights and the radio, to create the impression
that there's someone home.
♦ Ask police if they have a vacation watch
program, or ask a trusted neighbor to keep a
look -out for anything suspicious.

Inspired by goalie Kyle Cunningham's outstanding performance, Ajax
took an early 4-0 lead before giving up three third -period goals.
Matthew Carroll opened the scoring at 9:14 of the first period assisted
by Craig McDonald. Pat Milne scored the second goal on a long shot from
his defensive position. Sean Ormond gave the Ajax boys a 3.0 lead, assist-
ed by Joy McColm. McDonald completed the scoring with an assist from
Matthew Ash.
The Lube King selects are looking forward to playing in the North York
Select League, which was established 40 years ago.
Other team members are Brock Robinson, Sam Guzzo, Jason Winder,
Kyle Tate, Seamus Boers, Dan Lefort. Mark Simpson and Ben Piemon-

MANAGER
THE AJAX AND PICKERING GENERAL HOSPITAL is a 127 bed
acute care health facility currently expanding to 192 beds.
Construction is underway and the new facilities will be completed by
the Spring of 1994.
We have an opportunity for an individual who is self -motivated excels
at interpersonal communication, has superior organizational skills
and at least 5 years purchasing experience which included Tendering
and Contract administration. Good computer skills are essential and
knowledge of medical terminologies preferred.
The position requires an advanced knowledge of the principles of
buying, inventory control, transportation and a working knowledge of
budgetary principles.
Ideally, the candidate will have completed a recognized post
secondary program in Purchasing. Preference will be given if you are
a graduate of the Purchasing Managers Association of Canada.
At least 2 years managenal experience is required and the ability to
relate to all levels of management and to the general and medical
staff.
