and accommodated students up to
Grade 10. Two additional class-
rooms were added in the summer
of 1942 and once students com-
pleted Grade 6, they began
attending St. Andrew's Junior
High School, which was built at
that time.
The school did not close its
doors as expected when the war
ended. Many former plant
employees stayed in the area and
many jobs were offered by the
University of Toronto when it
established an engineering
school here.
As the town continued to
grow, the school saw an addi-
tional four classrooms in 1954.
When Parkside School was built
that year, the school board
changed the name of Ajax Pub-
lic School to Lord Elgin Junior
Public School.
(Lord Elgin, a governor gen-
eral in Canada in 1846, signed
the order dividing York County
into three counties, Ontario, Peel
and York.)
When several young offend-
ers set fire to St. Andrew's in
1979, the community was out-
raged, Mr. Kirkaldy says.
"The kids were brought to
court in Pickering Village," he
recalls. "The townspeople were
very upset, so the judge decided
to move the trial out of town."
Still, one story about the fire
can still bring a smile to the face
of even the most angry. It seems
a teacher there was fond of fish
and was horrified at the thought
of losing his guppies.
"Imagine his surprise when
he found his guppies swimming
in puddles formed in the warped
wooden floors," Mr. Kirkaldy
says of the clean-up. -
The school's destruction
forced Lord Elgin to expand its
program again to include stu-
dents up to Grade 8. That year,
the school board began plans to
replace the Lord Elgin school.
The wooden school was con-
sidered a "fire trap," though
many of the classrooms had their
own doors and students could be
evacuated quickly in the event of
an emergency, says Mr.
Lord Elgin Public School first opened its doors in 1942. The
wooden schoo\, not expected to operate after the war, was
eventually replaced in 1984.
Former Lord Elgin Public School principal Jim Kirkaldy visits students as the school prepares to cele-
brate its 50th anniversary. Mr. Kirkaldy was principal of both the old and new school.
Kirkaldy, who was principal
there from 1978 to 1985.
Admittedly, Mr. Kirkaldy had
been "skeptical" when assigned
,to the old school, though "it was
really sad" when it was eventual-
ly torn down.
"It had atmosphere. Within a
few months, I was really glad I
had taken the job," Mr. Kirkaldy
recalls. "I had been told that no
one would be able to sneak up on
me because of the wooden floors.
I knew where everything was
happening."
The new school was built in
an area that had formerly been
the playground.

The idea of holding informal
meetings was fast brought before
the board in March 1991, when
former Oshawa trustee Fred
Jones argued the meetings would
support, but not replace, deci-
sion-making.
All past and present students

I tconomist says 'no' vote will create'uncertaint
By DONNA DONALDSON
Durham Staff
DURHAM - A local economist
says the no vote in Monday's ref-
erendum will create uncertainty
in Canada.
"The uncertainty created by a
no vote can't be good," says Rick
Hird, economist and professor at
Durham College. "A yes vote
probably would have been better
for the economy."
But Mr. Hird says a yes vote
didn't mean that everything con-
tained in the Charlottetown
Accord was good for Canada.
"Like trade barriers, not everv-
thing was going to be great for
the economy," he says.
However, a yes vote would
have helped the confidence of
investors, interest rates, and the
dollar in making a stable econo-
my, he says.
Mr. Hird cites other past
uncertainties in our country such
as the Meech Lake Accord and
the Oka crisis which created a
negative impact on the market.
"With the uncertainty we've
had for the last three to four
months the interest rates have
creeped up a little bit and the dol-
lar has lowered," says Mr. Hird.
"It's hard to say whether the no
vote will bring interest rates up
(higher) and the dollar down
(even lower). But I tend to think
that will be likely."
However he doesn't predict
interest rates skyrocketing.
'(Since) the Charlottetown
Agreement the Canadian dollar
has dropped in the past few
months," he says. "In September
the prime interest rate went up a
couple of points and mortgage
rates followed which drove the
dollar down.
"It's going to start happening.
Would you want to invest here
when Canada's future is uncer-
tain?"
He says big companies looking
at investment in Canada may look
elsewhere where they feel a little
"more comfortable" for the long-
term.
"If you've got a choice of
investing in Canada or some-
where else that's a little more sta-
ble, maybe you'll look some-
where else," says Mr. Hird, who
is the author of an economics
textbook and has worked as an
economist for the provincial and
federal governments.
But he says the no vote isn'
the only thing discouraginj
investors.
He thinks the proposec
changes to Bill 40, the Laboi
Relations Act, may be another
factor.
"We've got other things oui
there that are possibly discourag.
ing investment as well," he says.
To turn the economy around,
Mr. Hird sees changes needed in
the educational system to train
people for new jobs, elimination
of provincial trade barriers,
changes to Bill 40, and keeping
inflation down.
He says the United States is
showing signs that it is coming
out of a recession and that's a
good sign for Canada.

Complicated
At one time the relationship between the police and the communi-
ty was more harmonious, and less complicated.
The police decided what they needed to do their job, and asked
for it from the politicians. Politicians learned what the people of the
community wanted from their police department, mostly by listening
to complaints and praise from individuals or temporary groups got
together for a specific purpose. Then the politicians arranged a com-
promise, which was imposed on both the police and citizens.
Life in the police force has been complicated by the growth in
size, number and influence of special-interest groups. These groups,
organized by ethnic group, ideology, sex and residency, are no
longer temporary. They are permanent, and their power is growing.
Sometimes the results are good, when they open the service up to
public scrutiny. Sometimes they are irritating, as with the recent
demand for more wasteful paper work. Sometimes they are bad, as
when police officers are accused of racism. (Are our police officers
really any more racist than the rest of society'?)
T6 Tsituation is not special to police. Government at all levels is
increasingly being driven by reaction to pressure from special-inter-
est groups. Groups are even being formed in reaction to other groups
— anti -groups. As the effectiveness of the special interests grows,
their very success encourages the formation of even more just like
them. Our entire society seems to be splitting up into a multitude of
competing organizations, each dedicated to improving its own lot.
We all have the right to organize into a group, with the goal of
improving life for the members of the group. But we have to keep in
mind that we are all members of much larger groups — the commu-
nity and the country — and our greatest likelihood of improving life
comes with the success of those larger groups.
For politicians it is easy to listen to such groups, and not hear the
less focused voice of the majority. If our society is to avoid fragmen-
tation, though, they must develop more fine-tuned hearing.

Monday's 'no' vote in the

Ajax Taxpayers' Coalition dies
To the editor,
Once again our beloved politi-
cians are talking budgets and tax
increases for 1993.
Late in the year 1991, we start-
ed a Taxpayers' Coalition chapter
in Ajax, in an effort to make our
local politicians more accountable
to our tax dollars that they spend
each year. We had membership
drives; we held several public
meetings; we attended many,
many meetings of Ajax town
council, the Region of Durham
council and both local school
boards, public and separate. My
Porn puts down women
and celebrates violence
To the editor,
In reference to your recent story regarding the "peaceful protest"
at an Adults Only video outlet, may I contribute a bit of information
that I picked up from the Business Opportunities column of the
Toronto Star?
The advertisement listed an X -Rated Video store and business for
sale in a suburb the other side of Toronto. What caught my eye was
the feature of the business — a clientele of 2,000 customers. Imagine
that many people on a steady diet of that trash!
Now I know that there are inspirational videos calculated to
inspire one, self-improvement videos which help one to become a
better person. Imagine then the effect of constant consumption of
videos which put down and celebrate violence against women.
Almost without exception these films convey to the viewer that
violence against women will be rewarded with affection. Does this
mean that these films can cause rape? Hardly, but they sure do noth-
ing to prevent such violent crimes.

wife Brenda and I started this Ajax
chapter and put in a tremendous
amount of time and effort to get it
off the ground and make it heard
by local public officials. We were
then joined by four local citizens
who were also concerned about
high rising taxes. Collectively, we
fought long and hard to have the
local level of taxes frozen at the
previous year's level, and we were
successful to some degree.
We went door to door getting
signatures on a petition for a zero -
percent increase and we received
tremendous support in this endeav-
or. We canvassed 1,805 homeown-
ers and we received 1800 signa-
tures, which goes to show, if all
you want is a signature on a piece
of paper you can get all the sup-
port you want. However, if you
ask people to get involved the
result is completely different. No
one wants to get involved!
We ended ftp with a total mem-
bership of about 250 people in the
Ajax Chapter and in June we sent
out a personal invitation via the
mail, to every member to please
attend a meeting with our prime
objective being to select a formal
executive. We received a grand
total of six people showing up at
the meeting.

Then in September, we held
another meeting in an attempt to
arouse people's interest once
again. This meeting was advertised
in The News Advertiser, and a
grand total of four people showed
up.
The only conclusion I can come
up with at this time is that the resi-
dents of Ajax either do not care
what they pay for in property
taxes, or they are happy with their
present level of taxes, or they have
more money than brains!
It is because of this, and with
great regret, that I wish to inform
the residents of Ajax that the exec-

Coalition, Ajax Chapter, is no
longer in existence. I have decided
that if you don't care about your
tax dollars, then why should we.
But please, do us one last favor,

making noise about some hefty tax
increases this year ... don't call us.

To the

born
Oh my gosh. An aunt
researching the family history
has just discovered the Bobbitts
were filthy rich several genera-
tions back, with a fortune built
on the shipping industry.
That nugget of information
has opened up a whole new
level of self -understanding, as
well as giving me a handy set
of excuses to explain away my
behavior.
Now I know it's not my fault
that I'm bad at budgeting and
good at spending. It's in my
blood.
I can't help it when my eye
automatically stops at the most
expensive item when I'm shop-
ping. It's an instinct that was
programmed into my genetic
makeup.
No wonder I've never liked
housework. I was never meant
to do it. And it's only natural
that I prefer my husband to
wait on me hand and foot
around the house; I was sup-
posed to have been born with
servants.
That's why I'm always late
for work, boss. It's a hereditary
trait of sleeping in. I'm fighting
when I pry my eyes open at
nine o'clock. It was never
intended that I work for a liv-
ing.
What cruel fate snatched the
silver spoon from my mouth,
you ask? What tragedy left me
an heiress without an inheri-
tance? Why was I born not to
the manor but to a three-bed-
room bungalow?
The heartbreaking answer,
according to just -written family
legend, has something to do
with whiskey and gambling.
Women and song. Good times
and bad investments.
What I wouldn't give for a
time machine, so I could throt-

Paris right now, or decorating
my Caribbean villa...
But, as my father says about

CRACK.
Dealers have
a foothold
on 'the down
and outs '
By NORMAN NELSON
Durham Staff
DURHAM - They're here.
The crack dealers.
"They're very well orga-
nized," says Sgt. Jake White,
who heads up the small RCMP
detachment in a cramped fifth -
floor office at Oshawa city hall.
"If people don't think they are,
just go right now and try to set up
an organization around Oshawa
to sell crack and see how long
you'll be standing. You'll be
down at Armstrong (Funeral
Home) with a tag on your toe."
They're territorial, too, says
Sgt. White.
"They're
glad when their --
door comes
crashing down
and it's the
police (and not
a rival gang).
"They're
gonna lose
their dope. If
they're stupid
enough to fight
with us, they're
gonna lose that
too.
"And they
may possibly
go to jail. End
of story.
"But if it's a
rival gang or
something,
they don't have
any criminal
code, they Ito
don't have any
code of ethics,
they don't have
any civilian
group watching over them. They
do whatever they want to do. And
they don't have respect for law
and order or human life — they
really don't."
Crack, he explains, is "basical-
ly smokable cocaine."
But that's where the similari-
ties end.
"Cocaine you can perform
under. but not crack. That's one
of the dangers of cocaine
itself ...you could perform under
it."
With crack, Sgt. White says,
"they're almost down to the
junkies and the old speed freak
group who are smoking crack.
They're the down and outs."
And that was exactly the pur-
pose behind crack's introduction.
Traditionally, he explains,
cocaine sold for between S120
and S 150 a gram depending on
supply and demand.
The problem for dealers was
that a lot of people on the streets
"didn't have that money avail-
able...they couldn't afford it."
Consequently, suppliers con-
centrated efforts on designing a
product "that could be more
available on the streets. There's a
certain market on the street that
had $10, S20, S30 or S40 — but
not S150.
"So thus they came up with
crack cocaine and they sell it
from $10 to whatever."
"They sell it in rocks and all
you neeu is a
pop can tc
smoke it in."
And that's
where the deal-
ers have a
foothold, says
Sgt. White.
"Kids have that
SIO to buy it.
That's where it
really hurts us."
The 22 -year
RCMP veteran
— 20 of them
with the drug
unit — has also
seen a lot of
things remain
the same.
"I see the
same people
using and doing
drugs in 1992
that I did in
1978 when I
first came here."
The drugs
they are doing
are basically the same — just
delete speed and add crack.
"Traditionally, the drug choice
of (the area) has been hash oil,"
Sgt. White says.
Runners-up in order of prefer-
ence are hash, marijuana,
cocaine, crack and LSD. -
The hash oil pipeline is
believed to emanate from Mon-
treal.
But the upstart crack dealers
are "supplied out of the Scarbor-
ough area," he says.
And the hash and crack deal-
ers "don't like each other.
"The rednecks in this town —
and there's a lot of them — are
going to take care of a certain
amount of the crack problem.
They don't like crack, they don't
like what it does, they do have

;ome scruples and they don't like
the people dealing it."
He says crack dealers won't
be found at the biker bars or "on
Birchcliffe Ave. dealing crack, I
can guarantee you that, or they'll
be floating on the lake. They're
going to get in other areas around
town. But they're not going to
get into places like that."
While other drugs have "fried
a lot of brains", Sgt. White says
crack will do it more quickly.
"A lot of people who are
addicted to crack will sit here
and tell you they want to get off
it. They curse it. It's screwed
them up so bad they want to get
off it — but they're hooked on it.
"We know people who have
literally lost everything on this
(junk) — good wives, good fami-
lies, nice car, nice houses — just
blew it away.
"It doesn't take long on that
stuff."
The dealer — at least until
he's caught by the law — laughs
all the way to bank, says Sgt.
White.
He notes that a crack dealer
who was arrested recently had a
$40,000 vehicle, equipped with
cellular phone and pager.
"His home was something out
of Better Homes and Gardens.
And the furniture itself could
have only been matched by going
to one of the most expensive
places around."
Sgt. White says it's not unusu-
al to arrest dealers with "a couple
thousand dollars loose money" in
their pockets.
"We've heard some bragging
about people making S 10,000 a
week — tax free."
Police still believe they can
hold the fort against crack in
Durham region, he says.
"We're still convinced that if
we can work hard enough at it
within our limitations — whether
they be monetary or within the
guidelines of the law — we think
we might be able to keep a pretty
good handle on it and keep it
down to a minimum."
The public can play an impor-
tant role calling the local police
forces or Crime Stoppers, says
Sgt. White.
"More people will call us with
crack information than most
other drugs combined because
they don't like it."

AJAX - Until August of this
year, situated on the land known
as 259 Taunton Rd. E., was the
heritage home known to many as
the McQuay house.
The McQuay family arrived in
the Pickering area in approxi-
mately 1829. Mary McQuay
(born 1786) along with her six
children (five sons, one daughter)
emigrated from County Fer-
manaugh. Ireland. The journey
endured by Mary and her family
was long and treacherous, and the
reason for making such a trip to
unknown lands is really not cer-
tain. However, the trip was made
for whatever reason, and Mary
and her family settled on the lands
north east of Pickering known as
the north part of Lot 6, Conces-
sion 3. Mary's oldest son, James
McQuay, was just 20 years at the
time, and he along with his four
younger brothers cleared a section
of the land and built a log
dwelling for the family to live in.
With a roof over their heads,
sights were then set on clearing
more land for farming purposes.
Mary McQuay lived in the
Pickering area for the remainder
of her life. It is not certain if she

James McQuay and his broth-

James McQuay (born 1809)

house had a gable roof with chim-
neys at each gable end. A most
interesting feature of the house
was its asymmetrical front which
had two entrances. The east
entrance had one window to the
left and the west entrance was
slightly off-centre between two
windows. Although the we rea-
son for these two entrances is
unknown, it is thought that per-
haps the entrance to the living
room (door to the east) was for
"everyday" or "family use", and
the entrance to the parlour (door
to the west) was for more formal
guests and entertaining.
The window sash was six over
six. The doors were four -panel
with heavy projecting bolection
moulds which suggests the house
was built in the late 1940s or early
1850s.
The porch of the house was
very attractive with its heavy
posts and fretted brackets pre-
pared in a thick arabesque design.
The design of the brackets did
suggest the porch was probably
added at a slightly later date.
In the mid 1880s, James
McQuay transferred the house
and lands to his son, James Henry
McQuay (born 1854). James and
Sarah McQuay then moved into
the Village of Pickering and lived
at 86 Church St. S. (red brick
house just south of St. Francis De
Sales Catholic Church). James
McQuay lived in this house until
his death in 1887. James McQuay
was known throughout Pickering
Township as a honest and
upstanding man. Both James and
Sarah McQuay are buried in the
Erskine Cemetery in Pickering.
James Henry McQuay,it is
believed, resided in the McQuay
house until he married Catherine
Matilda Whiteman in 1884. After
the marriage, James Henry took
up several trades (tea blender,
baker, salesman), eventually mov-
ing out west with wife and four
children in 1901 to settle near
Foxwarren, Manitoba on 800
acres of farmland.
In the early 1890s, James
Henry transferred the house and
lands to his brother-in-law,
Richard Gutherie.
The house has seen many
owners. With each owner came
changes to the original dwelling
suiting their own needs and tastes.
Several years ago, the entire
house was covered in stucco
thereby hiding the original wood
exterior.
James Henry and Matilda did
return to the Pickering area and
still have descendants living in
Durham Region.
Inquiries were made many
years ago by McQuay descen-
dants to purchase the house from
the developer who owns the prop-
erty in order to bring it back into
the McQuay family. Unfortunate-
ly, a deal did not materialize.
The McQuay house, which
was a pan of our local heritage,
no longer stands. Left empty by
its owner and suffering the
neglect of proper maintenance,
the house met its end in late
.August of this year when it was
destroyed by fire.

Hello and welcome back to
Name Dropping, the column
loaded down with events of a
special nature. As usual, we
have a bunch of 'em again this
week, so without further ado...
Today, Nov. 1, is a big day for
a big guy. Joseph Duffy McNee

Mrs. J. Cook of Ajax, while
Martin is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. S. Neill of Pickering. Kelly
Barrett was the maid of honor,
while Shelly Hook, Karen
Renau and Wendy Freeman
were bridesmaids. The best man
was Rick Freeman and ushers
were Rick Renau, Arron Cook
and Paul Whyte. The couple
honeymooned in the Dominican
Republic and now reside in Scar-
borough...
For a little beauty with a great
big smile, Nov. 4 is going to be a
big day. Rachel Ward will turn
seven years old and wishing her a
happy birthday, with lots of love,
will be Mommy. Daddy, Ryan,
Nana, Papa, Grandma and aun-
tie Wendy from Australia...
Lordy, lord, • look who's
Joseph McNee Baker
at his party. Joseph went out trick
or treating yesterday and plans to
sink his five teeth into some of
candy. Wishing Jo -Jo a happy
birthday, with lots of love, are
Mommy, Daddy and JJ....
N•
For Kaela Kyles, Oct. 30 was
a very important day, because she
turned six years old. Very happy
birthday greetings came from
Mom, Dad, baby sister Kassan-
dra and new puppy Cody. The
family says, "We all love you
very much Kaela. Hope you
enjoyed your party."...
N.
In the Wawryk house, the
shouts of happy birthday were
directed at Jason Wawryk on
Oct_ 29. He turned 18 and wish-
ing him a happy birthday were his
Mom, Dad and sister Angel. A
family dinner was held to mark
the occasion...
Sept. 19 is a day Lisa Cook
and Martin Neill will always

Repairing a ruptured
Achilles tendon
By M.R. HILLER
Special
Q: 1 am a 36 -year-old man,
and I completely ruptured my
Achilles tendon while playing
basketball. One doctor recom-
mends putting my leg in a cast
without surgery and the other
recommends surgery. Who is
right? George T., New York
City.
A: Medical literature is divid-
ed on this issue. Casting the
injured leg without surgery
avoids the dangers of surgical
anesthesia and complications, but
it may leave the patient with a
weaker tendon.
Surgery carries
risks but usually
results in a
stronger repair
and faster reha-
bilitation.
Most authori-
ties favor
surgery for
young, active
individuals and
reserve conser-
vative treatment
for only seden-
tary, older
patients or those
who are chroni-
cally ill or debil-
itated.
"In our ath-
letic patients, we
always use open
surgery to repair
a ruptured
Achilles ten-
don," says Dr. James Bradley, an
Achilles repair researcher who is
a professor in the department of
orthopedics at the University of
Pittsburgh and the orthopedic
surgeon for the Pittsburgh Steel-
ers football team.
"It is the strongest repair and
permits our athletes to regain the
power and endurance necessary
to return to their sport," he says.
"Although some patients are
better candidates for surgery than
others, surgery has the advantage
of restoring the proper length of
the tendon and providing the
strongest repair," says Dr. Gary
Fanton, clinical professor of
orthopedic surgery at Stanford
University Hospital and physi-
cian for the Stanford football
Learn.
Whichever treatment is cho-
sen, the medical literature is
adamant that timely and con-
trolled rehabilitative physical
therapy is essential to returning
the leg to its full function.
Ruptures of the Achilles ten-
don, which helps move the foot
up and down, usually happen
without any warning. An
Achilles rupture is the complete
separation of
the tendon into
two ormore
pieces; lesser
injuries to the
tendon can
include inflam-
mation, com-
monly called
tendinitis, and
partial tears.
R u p t u r e s
usually occur in
25 -to -40 -year-
old men while
they are engag-
ing in a sporting
activity. Rup-
tures can be
silent or may
sound like a
shotgun going
off. Surgeons
report that often
their patients
arrive telling
them they thought they were hit
from behind with a racket. The
resulting pain can range from
mild to severe.
Conservative treatment
involves placing the leg in a cast
for 12 to 20 weeks. This gives
the ends of the tendons time to
find each other and grow back
together. As noted, this strategy
avoids the risks of surgical anes-
thesia and complications that can
include wound infections, skin
problems at the incision, and
damage to the sural nerve or
saphenous vein. Medical litera-

ture cites surgery complications
ranging from two to 50 per cent,
although individual studies at
sports medicine clinics report
complication rates ranging from
zero to five per cent.
But several research groups
have reported that, when healed,
the tendon treated conservatively
is much weaker then a tendon
treated by open surgery. The re-
rupture rate after conservative
treatment ranges from 10 per
cent to 30 per cent, compared to
rates after surgery of up to three
per cent. The largest study
looked at 254 Danish patients
who had simple end-to-end sur-
gical repair and found a re-rup-

'ture rate of 1.6 per cent. The
study was reported in 1990 in the
Danish medical journal, Ugeskr
Laeger.
What's more, spending such a
long period of time in a cast
causes ankle stiffness and calf
muscle atrophy, and often the
thigh muscles, or quadriceps,
atrophy and the knee becomes
stiff.
With surgery, rehabilitation
can start earlier and full
endurance and power can be
achieved within eight months to
a year following the injury.
Patients who have been treated
conservatively can take four to
12 weeks longer to reach this
point.
There are two types of surgi-
cal repair. The most frequently
used involves opening the back
of the ankle and sewing together
the ends of the Achilles tendon,
called end-to-end open surgery.
The other is called percutaneous
repair. This technique does not
open the back- of the ankle,
instead, the tendon is sewn back
together by, essentially, poking
holes through the skin. Regard-
less of the surgical technique, the
patient will wear a cast for four
to 12 weeks.
The percutaneous technique
was developed in 1977 as an
alternative to major surgery; it is
done with local anesthesia and
the incisions are minimal. But
the results achieved by the two
techniques may not be equal.
The medical literature has no
head -co-head comparisons of the
techniques, in which one surgeon
or study site used both strategies
and then compared long-term
results. However, one limited
study did look at the strength of
the surgical repair.
Using amputated limbs, Dr.
Todd Hockenbury of Fitzsimons
Army Medical Centre in Aurora,
Colorado, severed the Achilles
tendons in 10 legs then repaired
them, using the end-to-end tech-
nique in half and the percuta-
neous in the other half. Then he
applied tension to the repaired
(tendons and found that percuta-
neous repair was only half as
strong as end-to-end. The study
was published in the October,
1990, issue of Foot & Ankle.
Other small studies have
shown that in the relatively blind
percutaneous repair the sural
'_nerve is frequently damaged,
T, which can lead to loss of func-
tkm and feeling.
,If surgical repair is chosen,

PICKERING - A Pickering race car driv-
er helped his Canadian cohorts to a
respectable 13th -place finish at the 12 -hour
Firestone Firehawk Endurance race at
Sebring International Speedway in Florida
last weekend.
Paul Duckworth of Pickering was joined
by Indy CART driver John Jones,
Players/GM Motorsport Series winner
Kenny Wilden and Firestone Firehawk race
driver Neil Jamieson for the high-level event
which featured 27 cars in their class.
The team, supported by AIR-sery Tire
Inflation Systems, Cascades paperboard,
Sony of Canada and Bob Johnston Chev-
Olds, was thrilled to survive the gruelling
12 -hour event. In a race that ran in blistering
heat, pouring rain and total darkness, the
Canadian foursome ran as high as 1.1 th over-
all, before settling into a mid -pack finish of
13th overall.
(lwards Just missed for Dwyer
on a shot which soared over the
crossbar from close range.
After a lengthy offensive push
by Dwyer, Ajax finally gained
possession in the second half and
proceeded to score its third goal.

Neil Scott at the corner of the net
who made no mistake on the
play.

team to 13th spot
Despite being 800 pounds overweight, and
underpowered by about 100 horsepower, the
AIR-sery/Cascades/Sony/ Bob Johnston
Camaro was able to run with the leaders.
Jones and Wilden shared the bulk of the
driving, posting very competitive times.
Jamieson and Duckworth showed consider-
able progress throughout the race, despite
never having driven the challenging Sebring
.circuit.
The Canadians completed 213 laps over
the 12 -hour period, going through about 600
litres of fuel, four sets of Firestones and
three sets of brake pads. The high-speed,
fast -place endurance race eventually took its
toll on the car.
Unfortunately, the transmission jammed
in fourth gear at the 10 -hour mark. Despite
the setback, the team tan the last two hours
of the event with only fourth gear, making
the 13th place finish all the more impressive.
