'� yg o %VCH"Y" %2 i Unity deal forces in heated debate By BILL EEKHOFF Durham Staff DURHAM - A 'No' vote in Monday's unity referendum is a rejection of Quebec that will lead to separation and economic chaos. The 'Yes' forces are using scare tactics because there's no guarantee Quebec will stay in Canada anyway under the proposed consti- tution. Those were the two sides served up Wednesday to more than 50 people at a refer- endum debate at Durham College sponsored by Information Oshawa. It wasn't bitter as debates go, although 'Yes' supporter Stewart Verge, Bell Canada vice-president, and 'No' supporter Michael Bliss, a University of Toronto history profes- Basement � sor, offered contrasting views of how the corn - promise of the Charlottetown Accord was reached. Mr. Verge said "a higher purpose" brought together all the political and native leaders to reach a deal that will finally bring Quebec and aboriginals into the Canadian family. He said despite some flaws, the new constitution satis- fies the demands of every regional group while keeping them all within the country. "I'm afraid if this referendum is turned down, we will have a country on paper the day after, but not one in spirit." Mr. Verge said. Mr. Bliss said the 'Yes' supporters like Mr. Verge were painting him and the 'No' side as traitors trying to destroy the country. He said he is being just as patriotic as them in voting 'No' His main reason for doing so is a fear that too much power is being passed on to the provinces. "The political leaders held a kind of barbe- cue where the provincial premiers carved out the powers of the federal government," Mr. Bliss said. "The two chefs in Ottawa (Brian Mulroney and Joe Clark) happily served it up.„ The most interesting part of the debate came when an audience member asked how the United Nations could consider Canada the best place to live in the world if its present constitution is so flawed. But, he's not dre uning. His Pine Ridge Pumas — the newest LOSSA junior football team representing Pickering's newest high school — are having a dream season to date. Carnovale and co -coach Karl Yap -Sam have molded the team into a winner with a per-fect 4-0 Record so far this season. They've done it with a mixture of experienced football players and newcomers to the game. It's been real nice so far," says Carnovale. "I just hope the kids don't become bigheaded about it. But, they're pretty sensible and they know there are some really good teams in the league." Camovale says building a team from the ground up has been a "headache", especially rounding up enough equipment for the squad. Cherry Sevigny, coordinator of the event, says the "vast majority" of people used free Ajax Transit rides to get to and from the zoo. Those taking Ajax Transit were allowed to ride the zoo monorail and zoomobile free.
