Page 3 Girl saves her baby sister AJAX - A live -year-old girl is being credited with saving her two-year-old sister's life. Dave Dolmer says his daugh- ter Shaina-Maric, ', almost hanged herself with the cord on a venetian blind around 9 p.m. Tuesday, but her ,i:ter Alana came to the rescue. Mr. Dolmer reports Shaina- Marie climbed the stairs of a plastic slide in the playroom of the family's Delaney -Dr. home, grabbed the cord for the blinds on the nearby window and put it around her neck. "She must have tried to slide down the slide and hung her- self," speculates Mr. Dolmer, who wasn't in the playroom at the time of the incident. Mr. Dolmer thinks Shaina- Marie was probably standing on the top step of the slide as the window's fairly high off the floor. "She may have slid to get (the cord) off." While he's not sure how Alana got the rope off Shaina- Marie's neck, he figures Alana somehow lifted her sister. Alana says Shaina-Marie was "hanging. Her feet were on the slide. I helped her get down. I helped her fast." Shaina-Marie has lacerations on her neck and she was "a little bit pale" after the incident, says Mr. Dolmer. He's surprised the blinds didn't come down, because he had a problem putting them up. "I didn't know there was any kind of danger," he says. More than a quarter of region motorists stopped by Durham poiice during a recent 24-hour seatbelt blitz weren't buckled up. A little less than half of the violators got away with cautions while the rest were slapped with $78 fines. They were the lucky ones. This time they only paid out of their pockets for a lesson that could save their lives. If they don't heed the lesson, they could pay a higher price the next time they don't buckle up. The cops know that seatbelts save lives. They keep telling us over and over. In fact, the police remind the public so often that it's a wonder there are still people out there who don't wear their seatbelts. It's a wonder that some of them are still alive. Here are the facts for those who refuse to buckle up: Cl Unbelted drivers involved in accidents are 16 times more likely to be killed and six times more likely to be hospitalized than belted drivers. J Correctly -restrained children are nine times more likelv to escape death or major injury than unrestrained children. Despite those statistics, 2O per cent of Ontario residents still don't wear their seatbelts. The objectiv c is to attain a 95 -per cent compli- ance rate. Says Durham Regional Police Staff S( -t. Sandy Ryrie: "If we get up to 95 per cent, another 5(X) lives would be saved." If you're one of those people who still refuses to wear a seatbelt, heed those statistics: don't become a statistic that the police scrape up off the road. Buckle up. It could save your life. Jannine Saarinen and Sarah Davis, both of Ajax, are taking 1 lessons with the National Ballet School (NBS) in Toronto. This .s -ne se---- v�u- �o-ah has taken lessons at the NBS and Jannine Saarinen has been dancing for six of her 10 years. photo by Ron Pietroniro Sarah has I� sum, ; �n Sauuda� morning for an hour and 45 minute.,. "It's fun. It's really hard work, though. It's okay " she saes. During classes, they. do "floor stuff" and work at the bar, Sarah says. "It's fun in some parts and it gets hard in some parts,., she says. In addition to her NBS dancing, Sarah also dances at the Marg le Taylor Dancers schools in both Pickering and Scarborough, and takes part in competitive baton twirling once a week. Sarah says she's out "almost every night, except Fridav and Sun- day. Those are my day,, off." Sarah, 9, began dancing when she was 2 1/2 years old. She's in Grade 4 at Lakeside Public School, with math and gym being her best subjects. Sarah has a sister, Stephanie, 7, and a brother Shawn, 2. Fining in homework isn't a prob- lem, she says. "I haven't been get- ting that much yet." In February, the NBS will hold country -wide auditions for its day school and Sarah plans to try out. The auditions are for the 1993-94 school year. With the day school, students reside at the NBS, combining dance instruction with normal school work "If Intake it, I'd son of miss my mom and dad and family and house, but I'll get use to it," Sarah says. She's been dancing for six years and likes it. "I think it's fun," she says. Jannine also dances once a week, on Saturday afternoons, at the O'Brien Dance Centre in Pickering village. She is one of eight girls out of a group of 20 who auditioned for the class and were accepted. Their teacher is Mrs, Toto, who is "nice", but who can also be tough Attending the day school doesn't seem to interest Jannine. "I wouldn't want to live there because I'd miss my mom too much," she says. Jannine is in Grade 5 at Lad Elgin Public School and says it's "not really„ hard mixing dancing and school. Jannine has two sis- ters — Katherine, 12, and Laura, 5. 0 to C1. Let's face it: all functions are not created equal. A few might be quite enjoyable; it often seems that the majority are dull events, where the highlight of the day is a yawn or two. While many factors may add up to determine success or failure, it is often the atmosphere that tips the balance. For an occasion ta be charged with energy and activity, you need to get people involved with each other, but that isn't always easy to do. And if most of the guests don't know each other very well, the ice can be very hard to break. Strangely enough, the Japanese have had a solution for 30 years. They call it karaoke. The term means 'empty or phantom orchestra' and, as Garth Riley, of G.R. Productions says, it is "an instant icebreaker". And he should know, he's seen it happen time after time at night clubs, weddings, fundraisers and malls. Although karaoke has been in North America for about 10 years now, many people, especially those 35 years and over, have never had the opportunity to experience it - until now. Lois Gibson, who lives at Hanson - Needier Corporation's The'vlansion condominium in Mississauga, was leery about condominiums atter spend- ing 10 years in her own single-family home and decided to be very selective. "I was content to wait, though, until I found exactly the right condominium for me," she said. Thomasdidn't have to wait long. Her condominium came came on the market soon after she purchased her first condominium home. "I liked the location and its price for the size and quality of condominium it offered," Thomas said. "W'hen I saw the penthouse floor plans, I knew it had exactly the features and design ameni- ties I wanted in a condominium. In both purchases, the condominiums more than lived up to what was premised to me. " Karen and Sal tiapolitano also are pleased they took the plunged into the condominium lifestyle. "As soon as we walked in we saw `quality'. no doubt about it," said Sal. "People who come to our place are just amazed at the pillars, the design, the layout, the trim and the details like ceramic doorknobs and the nice fix- tures they gave us in the kitchen." Karen added "most of the features weren't even upgrades, they were stan- dard." Now, he plans to use what he has learned in Durham Region. "I have a different perspec- tive on the area I am looking at it almost as an outsider," he says. "I see a lot of progress in Whitby and Newcastle, but I see Oshawa as lagging behind." Home design doesn't change that much from one place to another. Kassinger explains there are factors to consider, like weather conditions and govern- ment regulations, but the actual look of a home is pretty stan- dard. He finds dealing with the var- ious levels of government "absolutely stifling" and adds that it can also be stimulating. "Tighter constraints can lead to the development of unique solutions." Kassinger says. "The more difficult the problem the more elegant the design of the home:." Stephen Kassinger's influ- ence will be noticed in Kassinger home designs in the near future. A water -source heat pump can be used for properties with a well that is able to provide a sufficient flow of water. in this case. the water is drawn up directly to the pump's heat exchanger. where the heat is extracted. The bivalent heat pump is an air-to- air heat pump combined with a small, high -efficiency propane -fired furnace in one unit. (it is also available for nat- ural gas. but Ontario Hydro incentives do not apply in areas with natural gas.) Since the burner component of a bivalent heat pump is located outside the house. no chimney is necessary. The unit works like the other heat pumps - for about ROT of heating needs. the heat pump does the job while the burner component takes over for the coldest days. usually about 20% of the heating season. Up to 35% could be cut from an electric heating bill with a bivalent heat pump. Although heat pumps are designed to work with forced -air heating sys- tems, some units do not require duct work. These are known as multi -zone heat pumps which consist of one out- door unit connected to multiple indoor air handling units. The indoor units can be individually controlled by a local thermostat. The more efficient the heat pump. the more it costs. The incentives for qualified customers range from $500 for air source. 51.000 for bivalent and $2.000 for ground -source. OntarioM Hydro also offers financing. currently at 2 %r below the prime rate. About 5% of applicants take advan- tage of the financing option. which could reduce the price of financing a ground -source heat pump by up to S�.000 over five %ear.. The workouts are designed to increase awareness of and recruit new- comers for the provincial women's program in advance of the Canadian Women's Field Lacrosse National Championships in Oshawa July 1 to 4, 1993. To date, the national title has eluded the Ontario provincial team. Although Ontario's won four silver medals and one bronze over the past five years, a national championship before a hometown crowd would be the crowning jewel.
