Can you help
solve mystery of
abandoned baby?
Woman searches
for birth parents
By .TUDI BOBBITT
Starr Reporter
DURHAM - She was a newborn baby abandoned in a car
24 years ago. Today, Debbie Grant has babies of her own
and a burning question only her birth mother can answer —
what demons forced a woman to walk away from her infant
daughter?
Someone in Pickering might hold the key that will unlock
that mystery.
Sometime between June 8 and 9, 1968, a Pickering moth-
er travelled to Port Hope and there, in a stranger's driveway,
left her hours -old baby in the hands of fate.
"She had me to herself for about 12 hours," says Ms.
Grant, who now lives in Oshawa. "When she left me in the
car, did she say something to me? Did she say, 'I love you
and I'm sorry to do this'? What happened between her and
my father for her to go all the way to Port Hope""
In searching for her biological parents and the answers to
those questions, Ms. Grant has just recently learned they
lived in Pickering at the time of her birth and abandonment.
She's hoping someone here knows something that will help

Abandoned
at birth searches for OM PA
k them down.
With the help of files ftolln the
Childrm's Aid Society (CAS), Port
Hope police and the investigative
work of a Port Hope newspaper
reporter, Ms. Grant has learned the
following story.
Her mother gave birth to her at
home in Pickering on June 8, 1968,
at about 5:30 am. She had been in
labor for 15 hours, but didn't seek
medical help and delivered the baby
alone. She was 23 years old and
separated from her husband.
The next afternoon, a woman
living on Augusta St., Pon Hope,
found baby Debbie inside a car
parked in her driveway. She was
eventually adopted by another fami-
•y and grew up with four brothers in
Hampton, north of Oshawa.
'Emotionally, in my eyes, I am
my adoptive parents' child," says
Ms. Grant. "They will always be my
mom and dad. They were the ones
who were there for me and raised
me.
She always knew she was adopt-
ed, but at age 15 she found out she'd
been abandoned from a social work-
er who blurted it out "in a blunt,
crass way," Ms. Grant recalls. "My
(adoptive) mother was shattered."
When she was three years old,
her biological mother returned to
Part Hope in search of her and was
interviewed by police. An officer
who's now deceased drove her
dlpxxher to the house where the baby
been abarAmed without telling
her where they were going.
"She was apparently very dis-
traught," says Ms. Grant. "She start-
ed screaming that's where she left
the baby. That's why they believed
her (claim that she was the moth-
er)."
According to CAS files, her birth
pares rts were reconciled at this am,
and her mother was "remorseful" at
leaving her but "it was with great
relier she learned the baby was safe
and healthy. The file also states her
father wanted to find her after the
*abandonment but didn't know
where to look
In the file, her mother is
described as 57", 135 pounds with
fair skit, blue eyes and brown hair.
By this description, it seems I look
just like her," says Ms. Grant.
Her mother was a high-school
graduate who held secretarial and
public relations jobs.
Her father was described as one
of Ontario's top plumbers, 6' and
160 pounds with brown hair, hazel
eyes and a fair complexion.
Ironically. Port Hope police
know her bath mother's name and
address, but can't release that infor-
matton, says Ms. Grant. She recent-
ly
avenly interviewed a police inspector
familiar with the lose.
"He told me he has a phone
member, but there's nothing he can
do," says Ms. Grant "Her name and
everything is in a police file in Part
Hope, but they can't give it to me.
That's very hard on me."
But she appreciates the officer for
sharing what information he could.
"He was a wonderful man. In his
heart of hearts, he wants to phone
her. He, can't because he would get

Police hinted her biological
mother is now in the Unionville
area, adds Ms. Grant.
One of her dreams is to have her
birth parents meet their grandchil-
dren. "I don't resent anybody," she
assures. "There are a lot of unan-
swered questions. I will be upset if
they don't want to meet me."

es. "You don't go nine months

No hospital
fund-raising
jobs open
AJAX-PICKERING - More
than two dozen people contacted
the Ajax -Pickering General Hos-
pital last week under the mistak-
en impression the hospital is hir-
ing fund raisers.
In fact, a company called
Consumers Choice is offering
fund-raising jobs in a project
that's independent of the hospi-
tal.
About six weeks ago, Con-
sumers Choice contacted hospital
director of community relations
Tracy Paterson.
"They indicated they would
like to support the hospital by
selling coupon books and donat-
ing a portion of their sales to the
hospital, which we gratefully
accepted," she says.
But a job advertisement for
fund raisers placed by Con-
sumers Choice in the General
Help column of the News Adver-
tiser last week caused confusion
for readers and headaches for
hospital staff.
The ad says 100 hospital fund
raisers are needed at a pay rate of
$9.75 per hour and invites job
seekers to call 509-1483.
Instead, people have been
calling the hospital, stopping
hospital community relations
staff on the street and dropping
by in person. Even hospital
employees themselves have
taken their children into work to
,get them a job, says Mrs. Pater-
son. "You wouldn't believe iL
"People don't believe us when
we say we're not hiring," she
adds. "We would never pay fund
raisers. One woman who was
talking to me was positive I
could get her a job. She was
quite upset."
Mrs. Paterson says she's "not
questioning what (Consumers
Choice) is doing, but people
can't be left thinking the hospital
is doing iL"
Anyone interested in the fund-
raising jobs should call the phone
number given in the advertise-
ment.

The cause of the accident was
still under investigation at press
time Friday.
Toronto Hydro employees
observed one minute of silence in
a memorial service for Mr. Van-
derstarren Friday morning. A pub-
lic relations spokesperson said the
Pickering man was married with
three children and had worked for
the utility for 12 years.
The underground vault supplies
power to the Toronto Transit
Commission and, at press time,
the Main St. subway station was
operating on auxiliary power and
police were helping to direct traf-
fic in the area. It wasn't known
when full power would be
restored.
An investigation is being car-
ried out by Toronto Hydro, Metro
police, the Ontario ministry of
labor.

Pickering store convicted
Torselling tainted meat
PICKERING - A Pickering business was convicted
i.n provincial court Thursday for selling ground beef
laced with sulphites.
The numbered firm 781657 Ontario Ltd., carrying
on business as Pickering Wholesale and Meat Deli-
catessen, 715 Krosno Blvd., was fined $700. Compa-
ny president Luigi Di Vincenzo pled guilty on behalf
of his firm to two charges under the Food and Drugs
Act.
In an interview following the court decision, Mr.
Di Vincenzo said there's "no way" a similar incident
would happen again. "It was really a mistake, believe
me."
Charges were laid following an investigation on
Jan. 23 by Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada.
Owo samples of what was displayed as special ground
beef and lean ground beef were submitted to the
Health Protection Branch laboratory in Winnipeg for
analysis. The analysis revealed sulphites at levels of
737 parts per million (ppm) and 638 ppm respective-
ly.
According to Consumer and Corporate Affairs,
sulphites are not permitted in ground meat because it
constitutes economic fraud. Sulphites enhance the
appearance of the meat by giving it a bright red color,
the redness is maintained even if the meat is not fresh
and may conceal bacterial decomposition.
Sulphites also pose a health hazard. Levels as low
as five ppm in cooked food could be lethal to sul-
phite -sensitive individuals, and just one ppm could
produce airway obstruction in asthmatic -prone peo-
ple, says Consumer and Corporate Affairs.
GM worker aims to cut
off NDP from union dues
By NORMAN NELSON
Durham Staff
DURHAM - A General
Motors worker's drive to cut off
the NDP "or any other political
party" from union funding is
going gangbusters.
Alan Clarke, 34, a skilled
trades worker, says petitions cir-
lating around GM's numerous
hawa plants had attracted more
than 1,200 signatures in two days.
"So many people want to sign
it, we can't get the petition out
fast enough," he told the News
Advertiser Tuesday afternoon.
"There's been a 95 -per cent
positive response. I never thought
support would be as overwhelm-
ing as it is."
The aim, Mr. Clarke says, is to
present the petition at a coming
union meeting, and to then ask for
a plant -wide vote.
"Myself along with a majority
the people want (union funding
the New Democrats) stopped
for a multitude of reasons," he
says.
"When the NDP got in, we
expected them to support us a lit-
tle bit — nothing drastic."
Such moves as the gas guzzler
tax and the tire tax, however,
have soured GM workers on the
NDP government, according to
Mr. Clarke.
The alliance between the
Canadian Auto Workers, Local
222 (which represents about
15,000 union members at GM in
Oshawa) goes back a long way,
agrees union official Jim
Nimigon.
"It could go all the way back
Cthe old CCF (Co-operative
ommonwealth Federation — the
precursor to the NDP)."
He refuses to say how much
money was being handed over.
"That's between the membership
and the NDP. If it's going to
change it will be done by a vote
of the membership."
Mr. Clarke, who terms himself
"Just a working grunt", however,
says he undmstands the funding is
20 cents per person per month
and $100 a week to the local NDP
office.
"During electior time they
always vote a block of money —
.the tens of thousands of dol-
," he claims.
Other perks are offered as
well, such as full-time union
members paid to work for the
NDP during election campaigns,
Mr. Clarke reports.
Mr. Nimigon agree that some
moves by the rookie NDP govern-
ment have left the "membership
disenchanted".
He says, when the petition is
brought to a union meeting, "the
membership will speak" on it.
Personally, he is also a "little
disenchanted" with the NDP, for
such moves as copping out on
public automobile insurance, but
he figures the NDP is still better
than the alternatives.

Rae reaches
unanimity
Bob Rae has made it unanimous.
In the two years of his government he has managed to alienate almost
everyone. Business is upset with labor law reform. Medical groups, edu-
cators and municipalities all face cutbacks, despite a huge increase in
government spending. Taxpayers are upset because of the impending rise
in taxes. (Most are not fooled by the government's efforts to find "cre-
ative ways to increase revenue." All ways lead to the wallet.)
Now Mr. Rae faces a double threat: police forces around the province
are tying on blue ribbons to protest his government's guidelines on the
use of force, and, at the other end of the political spectrum, workers in
General Motors car plants in Oshawa are signing up in droves to protest
against their union dues being used to support the New Democrats.
It's not a good sign for the NDP when union members revolt: the
alliance between the two has been steady for decades. It's also not a good
indicator of popularity when police forces, which are supposed to enforce
the laws, choose instead to ignore them in an attempt to convey frustra-
tion with government policy. Police officers don't appreciate being sin-
gled out as special examples of what's wrong with society, and being the
subjects of frequent investigations into racism. That resentment was
/.'41
building, and burst out in the campaign to reverse the use -of -force rules.
Mr. Rae tried to be the nice -guy premier with his budget. He spent quote of the Week
billions to make Ontario's economy grow in the middle of a worldwide
recession, an attempt predictably doomed to failure. Now he faces the
consequences of that failure: dropping revenue, a massive deficit, forced When she left me in the car, did she
tax increases, and a complete shortage of funds to be a nice guy with. He say something to me? Did she say, A
is still misguidedly trying to be a nice guy, only cheaply -- with similar
results. His tenure at the helm of Ontario has been a financial disaster, love you and I'm sorry to do this?
and a policy disaster. --Debbie Grant is searching for the
It's hard to remember an Ontario government so uniformly disliked as birth mother who abandoned her
this one, unless it was the Conservative government that was summarily an a driveway when she was
dismissed by the people some eight years ago. Of course, it took 40 years Y
to work up a strong enough intolerance to dump those Tories. Bob Rae a few hours old
has managed it in only two.

Town misses the grade
on environmental preservation
To the editor,
m writing regarding the
Pickering council meeting of
Sept. 21, during which
development plans were approved
for the Altona Forest. The provin-
cial government must be called
upon to take a good, hard look at
the bureaucratic travesty that we
are forced to call our municipal
"leadership".
The meeting on the Alton For-
est, attended by a profusion of
local environmentalists, unequivo-
cally signalled this council's dedi-
cation to tearing the heart out of
the remaining wild spaces in Pick-
ering. As sad as it was, it certainly
was not unexpected.
For all intents and purposes,
en Wigs living in Picker-
ing already have to contend with
the fact that, in a provincial per-
ttpective, this town's leaders are
known to be ecologically ignorant.
While the majority of Canadian
leaders are seeking to preserve
regions of environmental impor-
tance, Wayne Arthurs and some
council members we so in fond of
development that they are literally
"feeding out the hands of develop-
ers". During the meeting, council
clearly indicated that the process
set in place by the provincial gov-
ernment does not apply in this
town; the decision to go ahead
with plans for the Altona flagrantly
proves that Pickering council does
not respect political protocol.
Certainly in the minds of this
town's councillors and media, the
designation of "environmentalist"
also seems to have taken a nega-
tive connotation. We are seen as
the opponents to progress: the pro-
ponents of recession and the adver-
saries of economic prosperity.
Politically, we must be defeated -
lest our activities jeopardize the
profitable alliances that have been
forged between profit -minded
developers and council. Ironically,
envummentalists do not have any
vested interest in their convictions;
our motivation is simply the eco-
logical health of the entire region
on a long-term basis.
The meeting also suggested that
a small group of misinformed resi-
dents living around the Altona For-
est had beers convinced that "envi-
ronmentalists" were responsible
for their renovation and utilities
difficulties. It was disturbing to
hear one landowner criticizing the
students of Dunbarton High
School for being troublemakers

who should be out picking up trash
from his property. It astounds me
to think that these landowners do
not comprehend that their property
will become ultimately more valu-
able if it were to remain adjacent
to a preserved natural area.
pother specific incident
stood out: Ron Oren -
in of the International
Wildlife Coalition spoke on behalf
of Dr. Murray Speirs, a nationally -
recognized and respected ornithol-
ogist who has lived in the Altona
Forest for over 40 years. Twenty
seconds into this deposition, Rick
Johnson and Kip Van Kempen
started whispering and giggling
among themselves: coincidentally,
Eileen Higdon also chose this time
to take a six -minute nap. Ironical-
ly, she snapped out of it in time to
voice appreciation over the
"efforts and dedication of Dr.
Speirs" on behalf of all council
(subsequently to turn around and
vote that his property be garroted
and isolated by the proposed Bra-
malea subdivision). This seems to
a synopsis of how Pickering coun-
cil conducts bu=mm- playing on a
public stage, but acting from its
own agenda. I hope that this is not
the way that our council listens to

community concern in general -
paying courtesy lip service, but
ultimately passing judgement with
bias. If this is indeed the case (and
it certainly looks as if it is) than the
real fools are the residents who
have elected this group of bureau-
crats.
In an overall context, Canada is
dedicated to preserving 12 per cent
of its natural habitat by the year
2000. Ontario itself achieved a "C-
" grade from the World Wildlife
Fund: a grade issued primarily on
the promises which the province
has made for the coming year.
Respectively, Pickering would not
even qualify for an "F-", based on
its collective performance in envi-
ronmental preservation. As munic-
ipal leaders, Pickering councillors
are obsolete - we will never be rec-
ognized as an environmentally -
friendly community with this cur-
rent leadership. I am sincerely con-
vinced that the province will Wer-
vene in the Altona Forest issue. I
certainly hope that this will wake
up the voting residents in this com-
munity.

A glossary for
the World Series
This is it. The big one. The
show. The World Series.
This glossary is for those of
you who just found out the
Toronto Blue Jays have a band-
wagon pulling out of town to
Atlanta to kick off the World
Series and for people who've
never seen a baseball game before
but now want to belong to the
trendy set.
- World Series: The annual
showdown between the two best
baseball tearns in the world, well,
at least this part of the world --
U.S. and Canada, eh.
- Chop Shop: Not a butcher
store, but the nickname of the
Atlanta Braves' home stadium.
Long ball, round -tripper,
four -bagger: a home run.
*A heater a pitch thrown at
such velocity that, if you were at
bat, you'd soil the spandex pants
you were wearing.
Chin music: a heater
designed to drastically alter a bat-
ter's dental chart and make him
soil his spandex.
,A slurve: a combination of
the curve and the slider, two
pitches which the human arm
wasn't made to throw.
- Rotator cuff: Nope, nothing
to do with a player's pant leg
rolling up. It's the part of the arm
that the pitcher blows out (injures)
after throwing too many curves,
sliders and slurves.
- "He took that one in the
abdomen/ upper thigh/ soft spot'•:
The player's reproductive capabd-
ities may be seriously impaired.
- "He's taking a minute to re-
group.": He won't be fathering
any more children.
- "He's going to the bullpen
for relief.": The manager knows
his pitcher is in doodoo up to his
protective cup so he's gonna bring
in another hurler.
- Hurler: Forget Wayne's
World; it has nothing to do with a
player bothered by an upset stom-
ach. Hutiet's one of several words
to describe a pitcher. Others:
reliever, short man, stopper.
- Free agent.: He's anything but
free. He's the guy who's gonna
leave the team that pays him a
million a season for another one
d a ll pay two million. Nothing
to do with the speed at which
Blue Jays' Devon White was trav-
elling beAxe the Mercedes sales-
person trying to peddle the car
crashed into a pole.
- Baseball smarts: Deva didnti
buy the car.
Still lost? That's OK. Just say
to every strarhger or fried "What
about those Blue Jays, eh?" You
R fit right in.

At the movies...
1492: Conquest of Paradisepresents
darker side of Columbus' journey
By JOHN DUARTE
Special
O.K.' So no one's ever going
to blame Hollywood for being
realistic in its treatment of history.
Real life is boring, after all.
Two accounts depicting
Christopher Columbus' historic
crossing of the Atlantic Ocean
5O(! Nears ago have now sailed our
way'.
While Christopher Columbus:
The Discovery was a lively bit of
historical fiction, 1492: Conquest
of Paradise presents a darker (and
in many ways more factual)
account of the Italian navigator's
obsessive quest for a route to the
Orient by sailing westward.
Director Ridley Scott offers a
film that borders on epic propor-
tions. There are sweeping scenes,
a terrific and moody score and a
powerful presentation of Colum-
bus by French actor Gdrard
Depardieu.
Unlike the season's first
Columbus flick, I492: Conquest
of Paradise is not a swashbuckling
spectacle. Scott is often deliberate
in the way he plays out the story
with no hurry. Each scene unfolds
belore the audience rather than
explode in front of our eyes.
Scott's images are carefully
complemented by Vangelis' musi-
cal score. The man who set the
mood with music in films like
Chariots of Fire is in top form
here. The music beautifully accen-
tuates the tone of Scott's dire -
tion.
On an acting note, Conquest of
Paradise is really a one-man show.
Depardieu is the focus of nearly
every scene. There is little inter-
play between the French actor and
the supporting cast, which
includes caliber names like
Armand Assante, Fernando Rey,

Sigourney Weaver and Frank Lan -
Sella.
Few actors could carry a role of
this magnitude effortlessly. Depar-
dieu has broad shoulders and plays
the role convincingly. The actor
accomplishes this in European
style. There is no overboard act-
ing. Depardieu shows enthusiasm
without drowning the audience in
needless gestures or words.
%lost of the people are familiar
with the story and there is no need
to tell who the character was.
What we see in Conquest of Par-
adise, thanks to a fine screenplay
by Roselyne Bosch, is who the
man was. We see Columbus as a
dreamer, and a man whose dreams
may be beyond his actions. When
he is faced with governing the
'tew-found territories, Columbus is
a fish out of water.
If there is am_•thing working
against this film, it is its running
time. At 2 1!2 hours, many people
may find the film a trifle long. But
Scott doesn't waste a single frame
and at the screening 1 attended
there was no evidence of nervous
rustling marking anxious anticipa-
tion for the movie to end.
1492: Conquest of Paradise is
actually the third Hollywood try at
presenting the historic sea voyage.
As mentioned before, Christopher
Columbus: The Discovery ran
aground earlier this year, while
Frederic March first set sail in the
role back in 1949.
If Hollywood has another try at
the saga, Conquest of Paradise
will be the yardstick by which
future accounts of the crossing are
measured.
Knowing what we know of
Hollywood, not everything in
1492: Conquest of Paradise has a
basis in fact. But watching and
getting immersed in this film, we
get the feeling that we've just seen
a bit of history come to life.

Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being a part of the Focus on Business
advertising feature definitely has it advantage.
Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes - have found that investment in the Ajax/Pickering News
Advertiser'- and Oshawa/Whithv This Week's Focus on Business feature have generated extra phone calls that likely
would not have otherwise occurred.
How do you get involved?
When a company makes a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also receives a full feature story,
complete with pictures.
]be -tory reinforces the advertisement. enabling the business to explain in depth its product and/or service, philosophy,
goals. special promotions and even a historical overview.
1'nle5. the business chooses otherwise. everything is done by the newspaper's staff: the ad design, story interview and
writing. nlu the taking of the photographs.
All the bu;tness needs to do is prepare for the increased sales volume, For more information call Janice at 683-5 110.

Day care can be a major ` r _
milestone in a child's lite. 4@1- #_;;t
Often, it represents the first -
time that a parent and child
are separated for an
extended period. Therefore,
choosing the right day care -
requires serious
consideration.
For Nancy Eickmeier,
choosing a day carte for her
two children was easy. She
knew that everything about

To provide the best

for the near future are behavioural

On November 7 a huge fund-

great gift ideas for everyone will be
held at the Pickering location.
