Thousands of Ajax and Pickering residents plan to be glued to their favorite TV chair Saturday when the Jays take on the Atlanta Braves in the first game of the World Series. Many of those same fans skipped work Thursday or left early to watch the Jays clinch the American League pennant against the Oakland A's with a 9-2 victory and a 4 series win. The Upper Deck Sports Bar in Ajax, for example, was jam- packed, according to owner Ben Vande Graaf. "We had a totally packed house from about 2 p.m. until the game was over. It was a 'rT See JAYS'...Page 4 Welfare levelling is a sign economy is better: Edwards DURHAM - The levelling off of the welfare caseload here may be a sign that the recession's in decline, says the chairman of Durham council's health and social services committee Last month saw 19,581 people collecting general welfare assis- tance, down slightly from the August total of 19,596 but up from 17,301 in September 1991. And, the caseload has also sta- bilized. In September, the region had 11,621 cases, up slightly from 11,613 in August and dramatical- ly from September 1991, when there were 9,977, and September 1990, when there were 6,692. Social services committee boss Tom Edwards reported in an interview with the News Adver- tiser after Wednesday's regional council meeting that September is the "seventh consecutive month the figures have remained at vir- tually the same level." If the number of welfare cases had "zipped up" in August and September, it would have been a bad winter for the region, Mr. Edwards said. "In general, we would support the concept of refugees who will attend Durham schools receiving a medical assessment as soon as possible after their arrival in Canada," Dr. Robert Kyle says in a letter to the Durham Board of Education. "From a public health per- spective, this assessment should determine whether these refugees are infected with an agent of a ,communicable disease." Trustees asked Dr. Kvle to comment on a letter from the Scarborough Board of Education, which is asking the federal minis- ter of employment and immigra- tion to bring forward legislation to ensure refugee claimants undergo a complete medical assessment immediately upon arrival and receive treatment when necessary. Last year, the entire popula- tion of two Scarborough schools A -as tested for tuberculosis after children of a refugee family had been found to be infected with contagious tuberculosis. "The Lime of the detection was such that the children would surely have been carrying the dis- ease when they entered Canada." Scarborough board director of education and secretary -treasurer Earl Campbell says in the letter. "It seems obvious to this board that people from other parts of the world, where differ- ent diseases are more prevalent than in Canada, and where public health standards may be inferior to Canadian expectations. could pose a risk to Canadians, as well as themselves, unless they are in good health when they arrive,'" Mr. Campbell adds. Dr. Kyle doesn't know whether the federal government's policy to test refugees within 60 days of arrival is "reasonable" nor what potential health hazard is created in Durham if refugees attend schools before receiving their assessments, and, if neces- sary, care and treatment- He reatmentHe points to a Montreal study which "indicates the risk may be rather low" because only one cake of active tuberculosis was diag- nosed in almost 2,100 refugees between August 1985 and April 1956. While Ontario Riding MP Rene Soetens admits "some parts of the world don't have the same health standards as Canada," he criticizes school boards getting involved in health issues. "It's like .an MP getting involved in the hir- ing process of janitorial staff at schools." The immigration Act will soon sec a number of changes, but Mr. Soetens doesn't believe medical assessments will be among them. He says it's "evident" the present act is being "abused" by refugee claimants who "paid for (legal) advice on how to cheat the system." But the Scarborough board doesn't think those changes go far enough. "If we arc able to provide facilities to detain refugee claimants while they are pho- tographed and fingerpnnted, then surely we can also arrange for a medical examination before the claimant is released into Canadian society to await a hearing," Mr. Campbell says. "It's not a bad time to build, but this is not a good tender." said mayor Wayne Arthurs of a $809,000 contract bid recom- mended by town staff. Another $15,000 would have been required by consultants to monitor con- struction because the bidder's "references are lousy," mayor Arthurs told the meeting of town council's executive committee. He also argued against the pro- posed Dixie -Finch location as rec- ommended by Dillon Consultants in 1987, saying a firehall on Brock Rd. between the third and fotu'th concessions or on Whites Rd. north of Finch would see less traffic congestion and better serve both the urban and rural areas. Proceeding with a new firehall was approved by council earlier this year, but mayor Arthur% said it would make more sense to address staffing costs during bud- get talks before beginning con- struction. 1}rging approval of the tender were Ward 2 councillor Kip Van Kempen and Eileen Higdon, who pointed out fire department response times are slow in the Dixie -Finch area. Mr. Van Kem- pen suggested residents' lives are in jeopardy. Councillor Maurice Brenner said he'll ask council at its next meeting to consider pre -qualified tenders from companies with "a proven track record". Mr. Wise has stayed loyal to the Toronto team even during the rough years. "I thought it's about time they won," he says, predicting the Jays will take the World Series in six games. The Toronto -Oakland show- down drew Ted Arnts of Arnts Loam Supply to the television, even though he doesn't consider himself a die-hard fan. "It was a good game;' he says. "I was sur- prised they won. I didn't think they'd win_" He plans to watch the World Series but doesn't hold out much hope for the Jays. "I don't think they'll win, but I've never seen the other team play." Meanwhile, students at Lin- coln Avenue Public School in Ajax were "tense and hyper. They were hard to settle down," reports principal Neil Simpson. "It sure is nice using the analo- gy of teamwork in the classroom," adds Mr. Simpson. "We can point out how well the Jays did because of working together." At the Pickering civic complex, the town's director of community services and facilities, Tom Quinn, kept trying to slip away from work early. He managed to catch the last part of the game at his home, where he joined his wife and children in rooting for Toronto. "I thought it was wonderful," he says. "It's the best thing for the Blue Jays, Toronto, Ontario and Canada to have 50,000 people spilling out into the streets of Toronto and not have a problem." There's no doubt in his mind about the outcome of the World Series. "Toronto's going to win. It's going to be a great series; Toronto has the talent and the ability.' John Campbell, the district sales manager of Labatt's, is "nothing but positive" Toronto will beat Adanta in six games_ "It's a great thing for the city, It's a great thing for business and the city," Mr. Campbell says. Mr. Campbell and some of the staff at the Labatt's office in Pick- ering watched the game "at one of our customers' (bars)." Scott Whittington, of MVP Sports Cards on Harwood Ave., says the Jays' capturing the Amer- ican league pennant is "fantastic." He and a few friends watched the game and had a "bit of a party". Mr. Whittington reports his store saw increased interest in Blue Jay baseball cards during the ALCS. There has also been an increased interest in Blue Jay lim- ited edition prints, says Tami Kazan of The Outside Solution, an art gallery. Ms. Kazan watched the clinch- ing contest, saying, "It's the first time I've stayed awake for an entire baseball game. "Fin really happy for Toronto. I don't know if they'll win the World Series, but I'm glad they got there." This was one of the many tasks students from across the region faced at the fifth annual Durham Secondary Science Olympics at Eastdale Collegiate last Friday. More than 80 students from Grades 9 to OAC tested their abil- ities to solve brainteasing puzzles and projects in engineering and aeronautics. In the brainteaser event, stu- dents had to solve math problems, thinking problems. word prob- lems and pictograms. In enginecrin_. [cams were given a specific task uch a,, building a floatin_ i, W building an extending arm that could support a standard 100 gram mass. For the tower, teams of three worked with a box of straws, a box of elastics, one -metre of scotch tape and four sheets of ,paper. "They get to apply their scien- 'tific knowledge and have fun while they're doing it," said San- dra McEwan, Anderson Colle- giate teacher and organizer of the event. In the space launch activity, each team constructed a glider out of a garbage bag, wooden paint stir sticks and glue. The gliders were then tested for distance. Ajax High School team Garth Rutledge, Mike Gibbs and Stephen Storey spent about a week designing their glider. "We had a couple of idem and then we came up with this one," said Garth. The team of Chelsea Balzan, Nesime Askin and Michelle Lue at Henry Street High School, took first place in the seniors division with their glider. It flew an amaz- ing 9.12 metres. "We read books on lift and drag," said Chelsea, in prepara- tion of their project. "This was the fust (glider) we tried out." Nesime added, "We tried about five more (models) and we came back to this one." Children know it; they're blind to minor dif- ferences in people, minor differences like skin color. It's too bad that many of them will notice those differences by the time they're adults. Instead of being color blind, many grown-ups are blinded by color, unable to see beyond other people's skin color to their heart where it really counts to realize that we are indeed created equal. They're bigots whose hatred is ingrained by ignorance. Older but not wiser than when they were born color blind. God bless the children, like several teens of various heritages from Archbishop Denis O'Connor Catholic School in Ajax. The eight were among approximately 80 Grade 10 students from high schools throughout the province to attend a week-long leadership course that focussed on multiculturalism. And leadership they did learn along with a few lessons that some adults would do well to herd. Listen to what Candice Metivier has to say: "We should be looking at a person's inside, not at their color. We have to learn to take (differences) as a plus, not as a minus.' Sa,,,s D.J. Say 'no' to federal government To the editor, I thought the purpose of the voting process in Canada was to allow, the citizens to make their own decisions. I hardly call the high-pressure campaign of the federal government to "Just vote yes" on the constitutional refer- endum leaving the decision to the intelligence of the voters. Aren't there two sides to every issue:' Let's also hear the reasons why we should "Just vote no". I have done my best to follow the constitutional talks by news- paper, television and radio and The News Advertiser wel- comes letters to the editor on topical issues, controversial matters and anything else of interest to our readers. I for one am thoroughly dis- gusted with the behavior of the federal government - it's wasting my money to tell me how to vote. For the first time in my life (and I have been voting for almost 40 years) I am not going to the polls. I cannot vote simply "yes" or "no" on these complex matters, and therefore will refrain from casting my vote. However, come the next federal election, I will be sure to vote and it won't be "yes" for the current federal govern- ment. A grand total of $20,534.60 was raised to help defeat the disease. Without evervone's support and generous donations this would not have been possible. The team is still winless after its first six regular -season outings although the Axemen do have three ties, the third one coming against the Cobourg Cougars at the Ajax Community Centre arena Tuesday night. The Axemen needed a goal in the last five minutes of play to sal- vage a 4-4 tie against the Cougars, who are enjoying some early suc- cess in their first year of Central Junior 'A' play. Axemen coach Lam, LaBelle says while he's more pleased with the team's progress now than he was a week ago, he's still contem- plating changes in the line-up. "We're happy with the devel- opment so far, but we still have some wholes to fill," says LaBelle, who filled one whole in Tuesday's game with quick -skat- ing centreman Ian Agard, who's back with the team. . J He points out that the club's penalties have been way down in the last two games which have been ties (including a 3-3 draw with Orillia last Thursday night). How- ever, he says, scrambly, undisci- plined play of his young squad has kept it out of the win column. "We get so many kids coming out of minor hockey who do not play good positional hockey. We have to keep stressing this at prac- tices," says LaBelle. Injuries have also played a part ,in the Axemen's misfortunes to date. Defencemen Frank Kavanaugh, with a fractured fin- ger, and Wayne Stevenson, with a badly bruised collarbone, have been out of the line-up with injuries. The Axemen got off to a poor start in Tuesday's game as the Cougars opened the scoring on Gervain Sytayk's goal at the 12 - minute mark. Early in the second period, Cobourg went up 2 - when S y t a y k ,cored his second of the night, redirecting defence - man Geoff Fleming's / shot past Axemen Ig o a l i e Larry LaBelle B r u c e Beachener. Ajax rebounded three minutes into the second period with a pow- erplay marker by Kevin Hill to close the gap to 2-1. The Axemen tied the game on Hill's second of the contest at the midway point of the period on a picture -perfect pass from Troy Jacklyn. Axe - men's Scott Wodsworth tied it up again midway through the middle stanza, spanking home a rebound after a shot by Hill. Cobourg broke the tie once again early in the final period, but with 8:32 remaining in the game, Ian Agard's high, rising shot from the top of the circle beat Cobourg goalie Jody McMillan to the glove side to salvage the tie for the Axe - men. Game time is 8 p.m. Soccer Spartans return triumphant from the U.S. By AL RIVETT Sports Reporter PICKERING - The Dunbarton Spartans senior boys' soccer team came back triumphant from a week-long tour of the U.S. The Spartans won all three of its games against school teams from Hartford and Boston, while earning the respect of the Ameri- can teams impressed by the Dun- barton squad's skilfulness. "Most of them noted that our players were much more skilful. The officials said that we were the most skilful team they had seen," says Dunbarton coach Mario lozzi. "The Americans where much faster than us. They ran the whole 90 minutes." The Spartans played against .the Avon Old Farm School, a pri- vate institution in Hartford, Con- necticut on Thursday, Oct. 8. The Spartans prevailed 0, winning the game of a goal by Alan Haines in the second half. lozzi says the pris- tine private school is more than 200 years old and was the site where the movie Dead Poet's Society was film( The school's ice rink also serves as the training camp site of the Hartford Whalers NHL hock- ey club.
