"At this time we're not really contemplating (job action), but there will be a show of support," says police association president Dale Allan. :Members of Metro Toronto Police have been working -to -rule to show their displeasure with the province's proposals on policing, including one which requires an officer to file a report each time he or she draws a gun. Durham's plan of action will be formulated at an upcoming executive meeting of the association and then presented to the membership at a special meeting Oct. 26, says Const Allan. "We support Metro's concerti and have the same zoncers," he says. "From our perspective, we haven't been requested by the membership to take any action other than through press releases and writing letters to the (provincial) government." The association's beef with the goverment, is that it "keeps pushing more on police." He calls the most recent 'use of force' guidelines, which sparked the job action by the Metro police association, the "straw that broke the camel's back." A major concern of police is the requirement to file a repon every time a gun is drawn. Besides the time away from the beat the cops will spend doing paperwork, officers worry about what the reports will eventually be used for. Another concern is that complaints of racism against police officers are now to be investigated by an independent provincial body, says Const. Allan An accused officer will now have to face "months and months going by with a complaint hanging over his shoulder because (provincial complaints commis- sion members) don't work as speedily. They don't have the staff. It's not their fault; it was never designed for that process." In the past, he explains, allegations of racism were handled internally by the complaints bureau, with the See REGULATIONS.—Page 4 O Mtly means results -- Adverlae in Ajax -Picketing News Advertiser (683-5110) c See REGION ... Gerard Kennedy reports 350,000 people in the Greater Toronto Area use the food bank each year. That means eight per cent of the people in Durham, York and Peel regions, Metro Toronto and the city of Oakville need help putting food on the table. "More startling is one in seven children in the GTA use the food hank." he says. The Daily Bread Food Bank is in the middle of its seventh Thanksgiving drive, which con- tinues till Monday, with a goal of two million tons of food. The Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser is again distributing donation bags — 35,000 with today's paper and 2,000 in the Sunday edition. Together with our sister paper Oshawa -Whitby This Week, 114,000 bags will be delivered to residents of Durham. You're urged to fill your bag with food items like canned fish, meats, stews, fruit or vegetables, peanut butter, powdered milk, baby formula or food, macaroni and cheese dinners, beans with pork. or rice. Then. please drop it off at a local fire hall. (In Ajax, Food bank issues plea for supplies AJAX-PICKERING - The local community food hank is counting on generous residents this Thanksgiving to re -stock depleted food supplies. "It's been a long, long summer full of unemployment." says Ginny Butler, coordinator of the .Ajax -Pickering Community Food Bank, operated out of St. Paul's on -the -Hill Anglican Church in Pickering. "Summer is awfully quiet; the summer is full of people who are in need and not full of people giving.- In iving "In the past few weeks, the food bank has spent hundreds of dol- lars to meet the needs of approxi- mately 60 families it serves, she says, and organizers are counting on the Thanksgiving season to replenish food supplies. All non-perishable donations given to the Ajax -Pickering Com- munity Food Bank stay here, helping local families, as do dona- tions given to a food bank operat- ed by the Salvation Army in Ajax. The two are the only food bunks in our area. Now until the end of October•, drop-off boxes for the community food bank will be set up at van- ous locations. They include the Pickering Central Library; the SuperCentre, Pickering; the Bay Ridges IGA, Pickering; LOEB Glendale, Pickering; Knob Hill Farms, Pickering; Food City, Ajax; Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ajax; and St. Paul's on - the -Hill. As well, a fund-raising event 1 organized by CHOO Radio at the Pickering Town Centre this week- end will benefit both local food banks, and will include drop-off boxes. From there, the food will be sent to Toronto to be sorted before it's returned here for distribution. Optimist Clubs throughout Durham are lending a helping hand to the effort. Since the recession hit two ;years ago, Mr. Kennedy reports, there's been a 117 -per cent increase in the number of children receiving food from the Daily Bread. For this food drive, the Daily Bread is asking donors to fill out a questionnaire on the bags in an attempt to find out what role the food bank should play after the drive. "We'd like to get a strong sense of how they feel." Mr. Kennedy sans. When the Daily Bread opened in the mid-1980s, the aim was to The "temporary and short term. We'd help people who had diffi- culty paying rent and then buying food" Since the recession's outset, the need has grown so much that "we've had a whole other food bank grafted on top" of the exist- ing demand, says Mr. Kennedy. About 25,000 more people are using the Daily Bread this year over last year, he says. That's not the only food drive taking place in the area. The Sal- vation Army's coming to the res- cue of area hungry people too. Joan Harry, family services coordinator for the Ajax -Picker- ing Salvation Army, says, "People need us more than ever." The Salvation Armv, which doesn't get food from the Daily Bread, helped feed 136 families in September. reports Ms. Ham. When she started at the local Salvation Army in April 1991, about 90 families were receiving food aid. Since then, a food bank operat- ed out of the Dunbarton-Fairport United Church has closed and some of its clients have turned to the Salvation Army. A food bank coordinated by St. Paul's on the Hill Anglican Church has opened and serves about 60 families. Ms. Harry says the Salvation Army food bank is "suppose to be an emergency service." It will also con- clude which roads should be widened first and which will give the region "the biggest bang for the buck," says Mr. Prevedel. The $400,000 plan is being financed largely by the Ontario ministry of transportation. Tax - Regulations on use of force 'lack rationale' FROM PAGE l provincial complaints commis- sion notified. Const- Allan charges the provincial government is listen- ing more to special-interest groups- and changes are being made -without any real consulta- tion with the police community". That's also the key beef of Metro cops, who earlier this week stopped wearing their uni- form caps and handing out seat- belt and parking tickets. "The proposed regulation is ill-conceived and lacks a ratio- nale," says a press release from the Metro police association's board of directors. "It has been developed with- out direct input from — or con- sultation with — front-line offi- cers." The statement adds, "The pro- liferation of new rules, regula- tions and monitoring agencies to oversee the police have fuelled frustrations". Major police associations throughout the province, includ- ing the Durham association, sym- pathize with the Metro cops. At a special meeting Wednes- day in St. Catharines, the associ- ations — representing 95 per cent of Ontario police officers — endorsed in principle "the issues that the Metro Police Association (has) raised and will be urging our members to show their sup- port in whatever way possible at our earliest opportunity.-. "The government has listened to scores of other people about how police should do their jobs. It is time they began to listen to the concerns of officers on the street." A provincial government spokesman, however, says there are no plans to alter the legisla- tion, which comes into effect at the beginning of the year. "It was developed in consulta- tion with the community and the ,police," says Cim Nunn, press assistant to Solicitor General Allan Pilkey. The legislation "best reflects our goals of enhancing officer and public safety". "With a master plan, we'll be able to pay for it once and do (assessments) with a broad brush," Mr. Prevedel explains. The region also believes recent concern for the environment can work in its favor. "People are more attuned to the environment," Mr. Prevedel notes, suggesting it may be time to change the design of subdivisions. "Instead of enclaves that arc isolated, it could be time to stet CLOSED ANKSGIVING SUNDAY back to the traditional grid system where roads are interconnected," paving the way for more direct bus, walking and cycling routes. The plan will also encourage residents to be more "transit con- scious," which will mean making it more available and cost-effec- tive. It should also be easy to use, says Mr. Prevedel, pointing to municipal transit systems which can make it difficult for a resident to travel throughout the region. "Every person you convert is one less car on the road in peak hour," Mr. Prevedel notes. All you have to do is use the bag inside your newspaper today. By filling the bag you've put food into someone's mouth who is struggling through this devastating recession. You've taken the first step in showing that Ajax and Pickering people really care. That while you're eating your turkey dinner with all the trimmings, another family not so fortunate is able to have a meal as well. The meal might not be as tasty or pleasant as yours, but, it's a meal. Even year local residents wonder if the food they donate is really getting to local people. Residents are concerned their donations arc reaching thousands of Toronto mouths but none locally. Each year we contact the Daily Bread Food Bank to ensure Ajax and Pickering donations are coming back to Ajax and Pickering. In fact, after the food is sent to Toronto and sorted, to ensure there's not an abundance of one type of food distributed here, more actually comes back than was sent out. If you don't have the time to get out to the grocery store, look no further than your cupboard. Surely there has got to be a can of veg- etables or a box of macaroni dinner that you can spare. You don't have to go any further than your local fire station to drop off your donation. And remember. Many of the people who are relying on food banks this year never thought the,,. wouldn't have enough money for food. They're people just like you who have had the misfortune of being ylctlnis of the recession. And. they'd truly appreciate your help. %d 1\ LIV IF WE WE RIPuOTE N°, HIsToRlc.., WE Pipup-mose-0*0 WP__ RIP UP-. Letters New school name causes confusion To the editor, Earlier this summer I wrote to you regarding the naming of the new school in Pickering Village on Church St., north of Hw•v. '_. I felt that the name of Lincoln Alexander P.S. would be very easily confused with Lincoln Ave. P.S. and so was a very poor- ly thought out choice. Your article on Sunday, July 19, 1992 entitled "Trustee sup- ports naming school after ex-heu- tenant governor" served to make me realize that minds were made up and it was no use complaining. I'm certainly not going to be the one to disagree with Mr. Reeds' quote "Mr. Alexander stands out as a good citizen and is a role The News Advertiser wel- comes letters to the editor on topical issues, controversial matters and anything else of interest to our readers. Please keep letters to a reasonable length of no more than 11/2 typed, doubled spaced pages. All letters must include your full [tame, address and phone number for our information. Letters can be mailed or dropped ofd' at the News Adver- tiser, 130 Commercial Ave., Ajax, Ont., LIS 2H5 or sent by FAX to 683-7363. model to all races in the country." I ask you then why your news- paper deemed it necessary to clari- fy in the article regarding a barbe- cue to be held at the new school on Sept. 3 that it would be held at "the new school in Pickering Vil- lage, Lincoln Alexander P.S. also known as Hermitage Park Public School"? I was further dismayed to read the article "School Bells Ring" by Donna Donaldson on Sunday Sept. 6, 1992 and find that a picture of a teacher and new stu- dent was captioned "Students who'll be heading to Lincoln Ave. Public School this week got a chance to tour the new school, located on Church St. in Pickering Village, at a recent barbecue." Please, the name of the new school is Lincoln Alexander Pub- lic School. I don't agree with the choice of the name but I must sup- port it. Therefore, I am torn whether to thank you or scold you for your errors, but one thing I do know — I feel vindicated. Jan Pettafor, Ajax N Referendum Oct. 26, not election To the editor, It is clear from L.S. Allore's letter to the editor of Sept. 25 ("Do you really trust these men with the Constitution?") that he misunder- stands the purpose of the upcoming referendum. He should be remind- ed, at this important juncture in our history, of the difference between a referendum and an election. Although character may appropriately be questioned during an election campaign, it has no place in our cur- rent constitutional debate. At present, it is imperative that voters foeud on discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the proposals contained in the constitutional document, not the perceived strengths and weak- nesses of those who wrote it. Read the principles, criticize the concepts if warranted, but please leave the cynical personal characterizations out of this debate. Leanne Lewis, Ajax //4746-$,e 4utc- Yag How do you think the Blue Jays will do in the playoffs? Andrew Aldred says, "They'll ks9e like usual. They haven't done well in the playoffs yet." So bad is this effort that actor John Stamos (Full House) was even recruited to sing lead on one number. There are some new songs -- all excruciatingly lame -- as well as covers of classic hits like "Under the Boardwalk", "Remember (Walking in the Sand)", and "Hot Fun in the Sum- mertime". The Ajax duo played from behind most of the way against the Courtice squad. After trail- ing 3-0 early in the match, Ajax rallied from a 7-5 deficit to knot the games at 7-7 and force a tie-breaker. Hargrave and Plooard, play- ing their first year of high school tennis, admit it was no easy task to win the LOSSA title over the tough Courtice twosome. "It was really hard. We real- ly had to work to get the gold medal," says Hargrave who, along with Plooard, is a mem- ber of the Ajax Tennis Club. Hargrave and Plooard got a bye into the semi-final match, where they played Aimee Fearon and Mandy Lamers from Father Leo Austin school in Whitby. Thomas Walsh Sr. started a tradition in construction, Which, after 25 years, is being continued by his sons Thomas and Lawrence Walsh. The senior Walsh trained others, including his sons, who now operate Classic Aluminum. As the name implies, the company specializes in aluminum and vinyl siding. However, additions, restorations and renovations are also offered by this reliable firm. And if you simply want framing done, Classic Aluminum will do it; if you want roofing, Thomas says, they will do that as well. The firm also installs windows and doors. The fact is, they are skilled in most areas of construction, and can be relied upon to complete a task they are qualified to do to the customer's satisfaction. Although the bulk of their work is done primarily throughout Durham, they have worked outside the area - for example, on a historical project with a church Classic Alumina committee in Scarborough. Another recent job was a garage that was added to a home. A small company, Classic Aluminum provides personalized service. The team members do all installation themselves, with nothing farmed out to contractors or others who cannot be accountable to the customer. As brothers Thomas and Lawrence explain, customers deal directly with the owners, who give "service beyond warranty." That's because their reputation is important, and they want only good news about their business to be broadcast. "A lot of work (90%) is through referrals," LawTence says, adding that that is due to the quality and service provided. Vinyl is the most popular siding. According to Thomas, Aluminum it withstands the extremes of our climate, being more durable. Both family men, then add that they plan to be conducting business for many years. As well, Classic Aluminum operates year-round. If you have a home addition, renovation or restoration project you need to complete professionally, call Classic Aluminum. The owners also welcome general enquiries. Thomas can be reached at 986-5758; or Lawrence at 831-1098. Your calendar of coming events Village, Sat„ Oct. 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. 683-4721.
