lion gallons of water a day to
Ajax and Pickering. The existing
plant supplies 12 million gallons of
water, about half the demand for
Ajax and Pickering, with the rest
coming from Whitby.
Ms. Grier's decision was based
on a report by the Environmental
Assessment Advisory Committee
(EAAC), an independent body
within the environment ministry.
Mr. McGregor says, "We
won't, if you will, appeal this deci-
sion." But, he assures, the ASWC
will continue to monitor the
region's response to the 21 condi-
tions.
One of Ms. Grier's stipulations
was the establishment of a commit-
tee to oversee the design, consmx-
tion and operation of the plant. Mr.
McGregor says ASWC members
will participate on that committee.
Irene Kock, of Durham Nuclear
Awareness, says Ms. Grier's deci-
sion is "good news. Evidently
she's taking our concerns about tri-
titutt seriously "
During the summer, about
3,000 litres of tritium leaked from
the Pickering Nuclear Generating
Station and the existing water sup-
ply plant wasn't shut down until 10
hags after the leak began.
"A lot of our concerns were
dealt with" in Wednesday's
announcement, says Ms. Kock. "It
looks like the EAAC came through
for us."
Also pleased with the decision
is the building trades industry.
Robert Hill, business manager of
Local 894 of the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers,
notes between 50 and 75 per cent
of the 15,000 building trade work-
ers in Durham region are unem-
ployed. Earlier this year, members
of local trade unions held a press
conference asking that a bump -up
be denied so construction work
could begin on the plant.
"Any decision promoting a
turnaround is welcome, welcome
news," Mr. Hill says.
The news that construction of
the plant won't be delayed will
make it easier to attract business to
Ajax, says town business develop-
ment director Grant Whittington.
A bump -up would have halted
development in areas of the town,
Particularly in north Ajax (such as
the A6/A7 lands) and south of
Hwy. 401 and east of Pickering
.Beach Rd. (A3).
The go-ahead on the water plant
means a sewage pumping station
could be built soon to service the
A3 and A6/A7 areas.
Durham West MPP Jim Wise-
man praised the work done by
ASWC members, saying,
"They've set a whole new standard
for the role of community groups
in planning. What they've done led
to all those (21) recommenda-
tions."

"Teach children at the begin-

"Then (students) can always use
them."
He supports direct skill
instruction and "relevant, genuine
and credible praise," believing
whole language encourages stu-
dents to spell poorly because it
doesn't correct mistakes.
"The more they repeat spelling
mistakes, the more they'll remem-
ber them," he argues.
Mr. Holmes believes teachers
01hould be given a choice of teach-
ing methods and should be
accountable for a student's
progress through annual standard-
ized achievement tests.
"See how well a child is doing
in comparison to others. That's
one way of comparing results,"
Mr. Holmes said, criticizing
provincial and federal govern-
ments for not imposing external
standards. He also believes there
should be a standard method of
measuring drop-out rates across
the country.
Durham Board of Education
director Pauline Laing said she
wasn't interested "in creating a
debate" of the issues being dis-
cussed, but admitted having
"highly different beliefs" from
Dr. Holmes.
She concurred "early reading
is extraordinarily important," not-

chances of success appreciative-
ly."
But, Ms. Laing believes lan-

The Oshawa and District
Real Estate Board reports
the average sales price of
new and resale homes was
$150,400.
To date this year, 430
homes have sold in Ajax,
down from 560 over the
same period in 1991.
The board says 117
homes sold in the region
during the week, with an
average sales price of

3,991 homes have sold,
down from 4,279 in `91.
The board doesn't keep
figures for home sales in
Pickering.
New adult learning centre to open
AJAX-PICKERING - Adults
wanting to improve their skills
will be given a new chance to do
so when the separate school board
opens a continuing education
department in Ajax.
The Durham Region Roman
Catholic Separate School Board
plans to expand its continuing
education program by opening a
location in the western part of the
region in November.
For the past two years, the
board has been offering classes to
adults from a school in Oshawa.
That location is limited in the
number of students it can accom-
modate and is also restrictive to
some adults travelling from .Ajax
and Pickering.
"We are confident that the
(new) site will generate strong
interest and response from the area
residents as we endeavor to serve
their needs," says Jack Cole, prin-
cipal of continuing education.
The board is looking at a site
on Commercial Ave. where it
would offer English as a Second
Language, an independent learn-
ing studies program and night
school courses. The board will
also introduce new programs such
as basic literacy, basic numeracy
and citizenship.
Plans to rent a site sparked crit-
icism at Monday's board meeting
from Whitby trustee Ed Finan who
questioned whether classes could
be offered more cheaply at
schools.
According to Mr. Cole, that's
restrictive because many adults
want to attend classes during the
day. As well, he prefers an "estab-
lished site rather than scattered
sites. People' want a site they can
EATERY
identify with."
The board offered continuing
education courses to almost 4,000
students between January and
August.

For more than 20 years, generous residents have helped make life
brighter for those less fortunate by giving to the local United Way.
The last two years have been recession years — which means the
demand on services provided by charities are at their maximum. The com-
bination has been hard on the agencies of the United Way — all have had
to squeeze pennies, cut back expenses and services and still try to deliver
the care that is desperately needed.
The United Way faces another tough haul this year. The times are just as
mean, and after realizing its first $1 -million year ever in 1991, the United
Way is once again counting on the community. ***Campaign chairman
Doug Wellman says it will "take everything we've got to stem the over -ris-
ing tide of social need."
The goal this year for Ajax -Pickering is $1,050,000. That's a lot of
money, but it's money that goes to 26 good causes, including Community
Care for senior citizens, APPLE House for abused women, Big Sisters and
the Distress Centre of Durham Region, all of which have been busy over
the last few years. The goal is also $50SM greater than was raised in 1991,
which means those who gave last year, and can still give this year, may
nave to dig slightly deeper if it is to he met.
Here are some incentives: one in every 14 workers is unemployed, and
some of them need more help than welfare and unemployment benefits can
provide; one in five families is headed by a single parent, and half of those
live in poverty; half of the people served by food banks are children. There
are more, and they all tell stories of people who have been neglected or
abused, have fallen through the cracks in the social safety net, have made
bad decisions and then been unable to right them.
For all of those people there is an agency in our area to help, but they
cannot help if they don't have the resources to do it. Those resources come
from us, and they come from us through the United Way.
Give if you can, and give generously. After all, you may be the one per-
son in four in our community who will use the services of a United Way
agency this year.

Pinegrove decision worries residents
To the editor:
At the Sept. 21 meeting of
Pickering council, mayor Wayne
Arthurs and councillors Kip Van
Kempen, Doug Wellman and
Eileen Higdon, now dubbed the
B.O.D.Y. (Build on Dump -
Yes) council, voted in favor of
draft approval for Bramalea to
build a subdivision on environ-
mentally -sensitive land known
as the Pinegrove Forest, border-
ing the Rouge Valley.

Be gentle with death
To the editor:
I am compelled to write a rebuttal to the letter to the editor in the Sun-
day SepL 20 edition of the News Advertiser titled "Entering into test arti-
ficial, foolish."
This letter was written by Louis Roberts of Ajax, and it appalled the.
Over the past year I have lost two close relatives, or lin Mr. Roberts's
terms, they "died". Most people have a had enough time dealing with
funeral arrangements and calling relatives and friends to tell them of the
grief without being morbid and saying "Hi, called to tell you so and so is
dead". Death is very permanent and you must be gentle with this subject
Funeral directors even have a special vocabulary they must use when
dealing with families of the dead. Many people am t nnmally ill and for
them it is literally "eruering info rest" from the struggle of just keeping
alive by means of machines and medications which drug you up so
much, there is no quality of life whatsoever!
Everyone grieves differently, and some people unfortunately never
completely recover from the death of a loved one. I wish Mr. Roberts
mach kick in his grieving process when he loses someone he loves, and
to then loon beck on his letter for comfort!

tified as exhibiting a strong
hydrogen -sulfide type smell.
Shouldn't we check out the
source?
This park space is just over
250 metres southeast of the
Beare Rd. sanitary landfill site.
It was an open gravel pit, where
Metro dumped an estimated 40
million gallons of industrial
waste and sewage sludge from
the late 60s until 1978.
You can't dump 40 million
gallons of liquid waste into a
gravel pit and expect it to stay
PUL
The residents know the
stench of hydrogen sulfide, rot-
ten egg smell, all too well. It
came from the liquid industrial
waste and we lived with it for
:nearly 10 years.
Other concerns of residents
include: lack of infrastructure;
the near chaotic traffic situation;
the $6 -million -plus cost to tax-
payers for improvements to
;facilitate this subdivision; some
conclusions by Bramalea's con-
sultants in their environmental,
Ihydrogeological and traffic
studies; destruction of the char-
acter of the neighborhood;
appeals for a more sensible
(lower density) plan and the
lack of a provincial environ-
mental -impact study which
could result in the entire forest
and wetlands being conserved
for future generations.
None of these concerns had
the slightest impact on the
B.O.D.Y. council, one of whom
kept dozing off.
To their credit, councillors
Maurice Brenner, Rick Johnson
and Enrico Pistritto put forward
a number of motions including:
to return Bramalea's proposal to
the planning department for
more study; a request for Bra-
malea to meet with residents;
and to look into the source of
the heavy hydrogen sulfide
smell. On all of these motions
the B.O.D.Y. council voted
"no".
Afterwards I asked one of the
B.O.D.Y. councillors why none
of our concerns made any dif-
ference. The answer was, "Well
you know this NDP government
and its affordable housing poli-
cy, if we don't support Bra-
malea we will end up with high-
rises in the Pinegrove Forest."
I guess if you try hard
enough you can justify any-
thing.

Sock divorce
rate soaring
It's often said that life imi-
tates art. Nobody says laundry
is like life. But, it is.
The proof comes out of the
dryer just about every time you
do a wash. Doesn't one sock
almost always end up without a
match, a mate if you will? They
might go into the Maytag mar-
ried but there's usually one cou-
ple that splits up somewhere
along the way, victims of dryer
divorce.
Is it in the wash, one realiz-
ing their partner's all wet?
Maybe the spin cycle sets them
to thinking about their topsy-
turvy relationship. Perhaps it's
in the dryer; one sock has an
affair with another which first
mate thinks is inappropriate -
argyle dress sock with athletic
white one, for example. Or it
may be the owner who's at fault
by putting them into positions
they're not suited for. Could it
be that you've put the right sock
on the left foot just one too
many times?
Whatever the reason, the
divorce rate among socks seems
to worsen every year as your
wardrobe gets bigger and better.
Laundry imitating life.
Even the small talk clothes
engage in is much like our own.
In the closet: "What are you up
to"" "Just hangin' around." In a
jam-packed dresser drawer: "Do
you find it stuffy in here?" In
the washer: "It must be the
weekend; it's raining again."
And in the dryer. "Is it just me
or are you hot too?"
Then there are clothes that
are buddies. Dress shirt to
sports jacket: "Let's go tie one
on.
Clothes destined to never
really get close. Plaid shirt to
plaid shirt: "It'll never work out.
You're a Stewart and I'm a
Macdonald. What would our
folks say?"
Clothes that finally get inti-
mate: "Is that a piece of Bounce
in your pocket or are you just
happy to see me?"
Clothes that should be on
Oprah, er, Oprah's show. or
Phil's, or Sally's. Like clothes
that think you don't treat them
right: "Geraldo, I've had a hard
life with him. He never uses
fabric softener." And, clothes
that get angry when you take
them to the laundromat: "I hate
it when he airs his ditty laundry
in public."... "Duds and Suds:
People who drink as their
clothes shrink. That's the focus
of today's edition of Geraldo."
Laundry imitating life.

AJAX-PICKERING - GO

Pickering Town Centre in a contest
to promote GO's FareConnection

Whitby.
Under FareConnection, passen-

While the free transfer program
has been in place for several years,
a special FareConnection symbol
was created recently to make pas-

gram -
To launch FareConnection, the
Pickering Town Centre and GO
Transit are giving away four adult
monthly GO passes and 12 10 -ride
tickets each month from Septem-
ber until December. Shop 'n GO
ballots are available at the mall; in
FareConnection leaflets at Picker-
ing, Ajax and Whitby GO stations;
and on Pickering and Ajax transit
buses.
Completed ballots can be
dropped into designated boxes in
the Pickering Town Centre. A 400 -
foot air -design sculpture of a GO
Train is in the mall's centre court
to highlight the promotion.
For transit information, call GO
at 665-0022 (or 1-800-387-3652
for hearing -irrrpai red devices);

AJAX-PICKERING - A Picker-
ing couple has received a wedding
gift that makes them feel as if
they're on top of a mountain.
Bill and Gerry van der Valk will
have a mountain in the Yukon
named for them if a request by a
close friend, Robert Rick of Ajax,
is approved.
While the van der Valks were
being married in the backyard of
their Duberry Dr. home on Canada
Day, Mr. Rick was climbing an
unnamed peak near Mount Logan,
the highest peak in Canada. On the
spur of the moment, Mr. Rick
decided to honor the newlyweds by
of a marriage
named in their honor
applying to the National Geograph-
ic Society to have the peak named
Mount van der Valk.
"I couldn't believe it at first,"
says Bill van der Valk, a Metro
Toronto police officer who learned
of the request only recently. "It's
one of those things that just don't
happen" It was the most unusual
wedding gift the couple received,
he says. "Now we're going to have
to drive out to the Yukon to see it."
His wife Gerry, an employee of
the town of Pickering, agrees the
wedding gift is one -of -a -kind. "It's
an interesting, fun thing to do.
There was a fair bit of thought put
into it."
Mr. Rick, a member of the
Canadian Alpine Club, says it may
take up to a year until he hears
from Ottawa regarding his applica-
tion. He says he wanted to honor
his friends because they're active
in Boy Scouts (as is Mr. Rick),
with Mr. van der Valk serving as
president of the OWASCO district
Gdwell Club for leaders.
'"Ibey're very wonderful people
and very dedicated to Scouting,"
says Mr. Rick. "I really didn't
think about it that deeply. You try
to do things for people some-
times."

Cholesterol
our
Illy X R. liII J"
Q: My son has a cholesterol
level of 155 and is on a low -choles.
serol diet consistent with American
Heart Association guidelines. My
husband had low cholesterol before
he committed suicide. What is the
link between low cholesterol and
suicide? Should my son change his
diet? - Dime P., Riverside, Calif.
A: Since 1979, researchers have
reported that individuals with low
levels of cholesterol in their blood
have higher than average rates of
death from suicide, murder, cancer
and other diseases. Researchers
have little idea why the level of vio-
lent deaths is higher, but are trying
to learn if low cholesterol levels
affect brain chemistry and alter nor-
mal behavior, in animals fed low -
cholesterol diets, monkeys showed
increased aggression and rats
showed changes in their learning
ability, pain threshold and physical
activity levels.
And recently, for the first time, a
researcher suggested in print that
individuals with a blood cholesterol
level below 160 should not be on a
low -cholesterol diet.
Cholesterol is an essential com-
pound in our bodies. It is measured
in terms of how many milligrams of
cholesterol are present in a deciliter
of blood, commonly written as
mg/dl. On Sept. 8. a researcher rec-
ommended that cholesterol levels
be kept below 200 and above 160.
But in our society, many people
have much higher cholesterol lev-
els. And while investigates are still
trying to clarify the risks of
extremely low cholesterol, they've
repeatedly found that high levels are
definitely no healthy.
High cholesterol is a major
cause of atherosclerosis, the build-
up of debris on blood -vessel walls.
This build-up often leads to coro-
nary artery diseases. That's why the
American Ileart Association contin-
ues to recommend a diet low in
cholesterol and saturated fat for all
healthy people over the age of two.
At the opposite end of the spec-
trum, an estimated 20 million peo-
ple in the United States 20 or older
have a cholesterol level under 160,
according to the National Center for
Health Statistics. This is often
genetically determined. Some peo-
ple reach this low level through diet
and drug therapy, but doing so is
difficult. And now researchers are
saying it may be unsafe.
For example, a Minnesota
researcher reported in July that a
12 -year study of 350,977 men
found that cholesterol levels lower
than 160 were associated with an
increased risk of death from suidde,
cancer of the liver and pancreas,
digestive diseases and alcohol
depelilidence syndrome- Efidexniolo-
V pn*s" Dr. James Neaton of
the University of Minnesota
described the findings in the
Arduves of Inlemal Medicine.
Similarly, a recent issue of C ir-
01112 ion, the jounral of the Amed-
can Heart Association, summarized
a review of the deaths of 68,406
men and women in 19 choiestel of
studies around the world. It com-
pered individuals wholie cholesterol
levels were below 160 with those
whose levels wipe between 160 and
199. It found that those with the
very low levels had a 40 -per cent
higher rale of death from suicide,
murder and other violence, hen"
rhagic stroke, respiratory disease,
digestive -tract disease and alcohol
-
mlated diseases.
The study, summarized by
David Jambs, an epidemologist at
the University of Minnesota, also

Interestingly, no association was
seen between high cholesterol and
cardiovascular deaths in women.
In an editorial in the same issue,
Dr. Stephen I tulley of the Universi-
ty of California, San Francisco,
School of Medicine, suggested that
explanations for the higher death
rates "are probably a mixed bag...
However, he added, Jacobs' and
several other recent studies are sta-
tistically strong and the findings are
not likely to be the result of chance,

Col.
Hulley analyzed the current stud-
ies and concluded that many factors
suggest low -cholesterol diets may
not be prudent for adults with
cholesterol levels below 160. He
made the new recommendation
described above for healthy choles-
terol levels. Ile also suggested that'
individuals who may have high
cholesterol. but who have not shown
signs of contrary disease, should not
be placed on long-term drug therapy"
to reduce their cholesterol levels.
In light of these reports, the
American Heart Association called
this month for additional research to
determine the exact relationship
between low cholesterol ILvels and
Suicide, concerti and other diseases.

Alax racer Quebec tiflist
atter Mt. Tremblant victory
AJAX - An Ajax endurance
driver captured the 'touring' catego-
ry title in the Quebec series of the
Firestone Firehawk Endurance
Championship at Le Circuit Mt.
Tremblant, near Montreal, last
weekend.
John Sherk placed fifth and sec-
ond in the two -race event to main-
tain his points advantage over run-
ner-up Maryo Lamothe of Quebec,
who was one of two drivers who
had a mathematical chance of tak-
ing over first place.
While Sherk was extremely
pleased with his first pro racing
championship, he was relieved that
he had also increased his national
championship points lead over sec-
ond -place driver. Des Hockley,
whose Honda CRX-Si finished well
behind Sherk's Acura Integra in the
ML Tremblant race.
The final Firehawk race of this
season is at Mosport Park, just
north of Bowmanville, Oct. 10 and
ll. The three-hour endurance race
gets under way at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Barring major difficulties, Sherk
is confident that he and his team
will leave Mosport with their first-
ever national pro championship in
their first fufl season together.
The Firestone Firehawk
Endurance Championship is a
series of races varying in length
from one to 24 hours. The cars
which race in the series are "show-
room stock" except for safety and
durability -related modifications and
are essentially the same vehicles on

AJAX - "It was the longest
weekend of my entire life,"
says the Ajax mother of four.
Unable to sleep, 35 -year-old
Marcie Lane looked at the bed-
side clock. It was 4 a.m. on a
Saturday morning in August,
1990.
"How long do I have?," she
had asked the doctor in the
recovery room on Friday.
His reply was only, "You
require more surgery".
Standing in the hush pre-
dawn darkness next morning,
Mrs. Lane thought of her hus-
band and children, including
her two-year-old asleep in the
crib. At that very moment
malignant cells in her body,
were multiplying, spreading,
out of control.
"I didn't know if I had two
weeks, or two months to live,"
she says.
Her biopsy was positive. The
tissue sample showed she was
living with cancer.
Mrs. Lane's path would soon
cross with Jean Deneault, a
woman whose abdomen was
invaded by cancer. "Over 50"
and a fighter, Mrs. Deneault
refused to accept the terms her
doctors had set down. They
suggested she get her affairs in
order.
"They gave me a year to a
year -and -a -half to live," she
says. That was over three years
ago.
Today both women's cancer
is in remission, yet the path to
recovery — the "journey", as
Mrs. Deneault calls it — was
fraught with denial, anger, fear,
depression and moments of
deep despair.
Mrs. Lane says, "I thought if
I could only run fast enough,
long enough and far enough,
that I could leave it behind."
It was terror, not pain, that
brought the two to a cancer
support group in Ajax, run by
volunteers from the Canadian
Cancer Society.
The five stages faced by the
terminally ill are well described
by author Elisabeth Kubler-
Ross in her book On Death, and
Dying. One is denying the
finality of death, then comes
anger, followed by bargaining
for time, then depression, and
finally acceptance. Unfortu-
nately, living those stages isn't
as easy as listing them.
For many there is no steady
progression from one to five,
,like walking down a flight of
stairs. Mood swings take the

sufferer on a crazy dance, like a
light-footed tap dancer, first on
one, jumping to five, then arcing
back to two. The dance of grief
becomes frightening.
But within the group no two
cancer patients are on the same
plane at the same time, leading
to mutual support, comfort and
even laughter.
Mrs. Lane says, "We spend a
lot of time laughing" about the
absurdity of concern with trivial
details, when there is so much
more urgency in living.
Living with cancer means liv-
ing with hope. The disease is
not always fatal, and in a group
setting there is time, lots of it, to
talk about things that really mat-
ter in life — things escaping
most of us as we try to make a
living, get ahead, raise families.
Here, members share how
hard it is on families to be con-
stantly on their best behavior.
Stories of turbans or wigs need-
ed after hair loss from drug ther-
apy bring laughter, not change.
They share techniques in relax-
ation therapy, medication break-
throughs and prosthesis adjust-
ments.
"Nobody laughs, or calls you
weird," says Mrs. Lane, refer-
ring to her sudden body weight
changes and hair loss associated
with chemotherapy. Others in
the group have been through it,
and lived.
"The fear is constant until
you talk to somebody who's
been through it themselves," she
says.
Members bring their children
and spouses to the group, hop-
ing that they too may find the
courage to let go of the mun-
dane, making the best of what
could be the final days.
They come from a society
that refers to cancer in hushed,
funereal tones as "the big C", as
if avoiding the word will shield
us from the rampage of the dis-
ease. One reason is our helpless-
ness in understanding cancer's
legacy of death and suffering.
Yet her active refusal to
accept death may be exactly
what saved Mrs. Deneault. She
didn't deny her cancer, which
had spread beyond the bounds
of successful treatment. But she
did refuse to succumb to it.
"They're not gods," she says
of the doctors who advised her
to make the best of her remain-
ing time. The very act of being
`'given" time to live annoyed
her.
In addition to chemotherapy
prescribed, she cut her own
course of religious shrines, heal-
ing spas and meditation. Under-
going the "quantum shift" that
many seek, but seldom find,
Mrs. Deneault's world began to
open up, instead of collapsing.
"If you told me three years
ago that I would be into medita-
tion today, 1 would have said
you're crazy."
Practising deep relaxation
during her chemotherapy treat-
ments helped prevent the breath -
ing difficulties that can accom-
pany the drugs. The benefits
today are enormous.
"I'm more tolerant of people
and their feelings," says Mrs.
Deneault.
Mrs. Lane says, "If some-
thing's bothering me, I get it
out, and then get on with
things."
Both women have found that
the certainty of death has
brought them closer to life.
A recent thunderstorm
awoke Mrs. Lane before dawn,
and as happened two years ago,
she got out of bed, unable to
return to sleep.
But her insomnia now is in
wonder and awe of the world
around her, the natural process-
es of the cycle of birth, death
and most of all, living. The
weather becomes a part of life,
not an inconvenience.
"It's been a good summer"
for watching lightning and
hearing the thunder, she says.
