"The public safety will be looked after," Ajax Save the Waterfront Committee (ASWC) member Sherrill Willard said of Wednesday's announcement by Ontario environment minister Ruth Grier. Mrs. Willard says the 21 conditions that must be met before the region can proceed with plans to build a S60 -mil- lion plant on the Ajax lakeshore are "better than a 'bump -up' (that would have forced a tougher test of the proposed facility than the one that's planned). It chops off a few more years of study." Equally pleased is Ajax mayor Jim Witty who calls the conditions "reasonable... The public has had input and will continue to have input. Now Ajax and Pickering will be able to look forward to com- munity development, especial- ly industrial and commercial-, something which was in *)p- ardy without a new supply facility. Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman told yes- terday morning's news conference the provin- cial ministry of natural resources has okayed a $500,000 expenditure by the Metro Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to buy the land together with the town to keep it in its nat- ural state. Sandbury Homes, the owners of the land, had set an Oct. 31 deadline for the town and the province to come up with the $1 million. Pickering council in June approved the town's $500,000 share to buy the 8.5 hectares (21 acres) on the east side of the bay, near Fairview Ave. Sandbury had plans to build 39 townhouses on the property. Residents in the area opposed to the development had gathered 860 names on a petition. Heather Stackhouse, of Fairview Ave., called the news "wonderful. It's something we'd hoped for and weren't sure we were going to get." In addition, Pickering mayor Wayne Arthurs promises to personally carry Ajax mayor Jim Witty's "one bag" of garbage to the curb if Pickering lases the challenge. The amount of the gift, named in the will of the late Dorothy Card, hasn't yet been made public. Town council's executive committee Monday voted to accept the money from the estate of Ms. Card, who died in 1990 Conservation schemes endorsed by Pickering PICKERING - Two reports containing strategies and policies of the Metro Toronto and Region Conservation Authority have been endorsed by Pickering council. Town council's executive committee Monday agreed with "Valley and Stream Corridor Management Program" and "Review of Policies for the Pub- lic Use of Conservation Lands". If adopted by the MTRCA, the reports would "result in new directions" for the authority, say Pickering planners. The documents describe the authority's "need to be even more environmentally -aware in its use and management of lands", planners note Included in the reports is a proposal to increase the amount of public land required adjacent to a valley or stream corridor. Pickering planners suggest that proposal be considered a "guide- line only", noting the town has little money available for pur- chasing additional lands. Pickering seeks alternatives to dumping trash PICKERING - A request that the province look at alternatives to dumping garbage in landfill sites was endorsed by Pickering council's executive committee Monday. Pickering will join the region of Durham in urging environment min- ister Ruth Grier to consider incineration or export of garbage, two options she has already nixed. Both Durham and Pickering councils want the mandate of the provin- cial Interim Waste Authority expanded. The IWA was created to find a dump site in each of the regions of Durham, York and Peel and is expected to announce a "shon list" of candidate sites in November. The board's Christmas present to senior citizens, to be delivered in the new year, will be a SIO fee for .-nrolment in general -interest and credit courses. The fee is designed to cover administrative costs. More than likely, there will be senior citizens who won't sign up for arts and crafts, dancing and defensive driving next year because of the fee. What the board is doing by implementing this new fee is asking for more money from a segment of the taxpaying population that's already living on a fixed .� income. These are people ho've spent a lifetime paying education taxes: people who conceivably depend on these leisure activities to provide them with friendships and emotional well-being. According to the board, it spends S100.000 annualiy on salaries in order to offer 50 continuing -education courses to people of all ages. Couldn't the board take a look at freezing some of those salaries or trimming other administrative costs instead of hitting seniors' pockettiook ' Perhaps fewer courses could be offered in order to avoid a fee, or perhaps seniors could be asked to contribute what they can afford on a voluntary basis. Granted, S 10 doesn't sound like much to ask for a course. But anv senior who can't afford it should still be permitted to enrol. The video's $27,500 price tag sparked criticism from some councillors who believed the money could be better spent elsewhere, even though a company interested in producing it had arranged a corporate sponsor to pick up half the tab. "Do we really need to spend money on a video that already exists in a number of firms?" and could be purchased by the region, Oshawa's Brian Nicholson asked his colleagues Wednesday, the mid -point of Waste Reduction Week. The Warriors scored late in the first half to salvage a I -I tic in a meaning- less game for the Warriors who had already sewn up the league championship several weeks *I i:0. The contest was played at the Ajax Michael Brown Community Centre's field on Sunday after- noon. "Basically, our players went through the motions," says War- riors' head coach Michael Brown. "Their hearts weren't in it. But, that's not to take any- thing way from Durham County who played very well." The visitors opened the scor- ing 10 minutes into the first half of play. A Durham County striker broke in behind the Ajax defence which was caught nap- ping on the play, and put a well- placed shot past Ajax goalkeep- cr Adam Wood. The Warriors came back late in the half to net the equalizer. Mark Crane scored after the ball popped loose from a scramble in front of the Durham County net. Ajax had several excellent scoring opportunities in the sec- ond half, but was unable to capi- talize. The Upper Deck Warriors finished league play with a record of 14 wins, five ties and two losses, three points ahead of Durham Celtic which still has a make-up game remaining. Red,hot Barrie comes to Ajax for Axemen home opener Tuesday AJAX - The Ajax Axemen earned their first point of the young season after playing the host Peterborough Junior Petes to a 6-6 tie in Central Junior 'A' action Tuesday night. The Axemen erased a 4-1 first -period deficit and were leading 6-5 in the final period with Peterborough needing a late -goal to salvage the tie. Axemen head coach Larry LaBelle says it Was a tribute to his club to come back after falling so far behind in the early stages of the contest. "Our penalties were way down and our -defence was a bit tighter. But, the main thing is they didn't give up after being down 4-1 in the first period," says LaBelle. Troy Jacklyn, a former Seneca College AJ4LX 068 EV CWS player, potted two goals for the Axemen, as did veteran forward J.P Latreille. Other markers came from Oshawa 'AA' midget grad Kevin Plummer and former Scarbor- ough Mowat High School player Aaron Saul. Dunbarton boys face Americans in soccer tour PICKERING - The Dunbar - ton High School senior boys' soccer team will put its skills to the test against U.S. competition next week. The Dunbarton squad will leave for a five-day tour of Hartford. Connecticut and Boston, Mas- sachusetts on Oct. 7, arriv- ing back in Pickering on Oct. 11. Dur- ing that time, the Dunbarton boys will play three exhibition contests against American high schools. Dunbarton coach Mario Iozzi wants his charges to face com- petition they're not used to and he hopes to see how the school's soccer program compares with those in the U.S. "We're going down there to get some different kinds of com- petition and see what it's like to play American schools," says lozzi. "I've got a feeling our kids will do all right. I under- stand the Americans have come a long way in soccer. They're hosting the World Cup next year and their (school) programs are starting to take off there." Dunbarton sees first action against Hartford's Avon Old Farm private school on Thurs- da}, Oct. 8. The next exhibition contest is in Boston against the Governor Dummar Academy, another private school, on Fri- day. The final game is also in Boston against Needham High School on Saturday.
