Murdered woman's relatives doubt pain will stop By LINDA WHITE Staff Reporter AJAX-PICKERING - Although the husband of Patricia Anne Lopez has been sent to prison for her murder, grieving family members don't know if their pain "will ever stop "The sentence is in and the book is closed, but the mind never stops," the victim's brother-in-law Ray Willis admits follow- ing Edwin Orlando Lopez-Farfan's murder confession at a Toronto courthouse Tuesday. ..You see a girl walk- ing down the street who wears her hair the same way Patricia did or walks the same way she did. Durham Board of Education trustees have created a final transportation appeal board, hop- ing it will resolve problems for ,those parents and guardians who don't find an acceptable solution through the regular appeal pro- cess regarding their children's transportation to and from school. The committee will be made up of three trustees from the finance and transportation com- mittee and will be chaired by a non-voting staff member. .Because it's smaller than the full finance and transportation committee, appeal board "mem- bers will be able to pull them- selves together on shorter notice, not just once every month," school board communications manager Mary Brown explains. Soetens'wants to amend GST to help firms (AJAX-PICKERING - Ontario Riding MP Rene Soetens wants Ottawa to give businesses more time to adjust to the Goods and Services Tax. Companies should have until the end of 1992 to file for a rebate of the old Federal Sales Tax, he says. Under Ottawa's current law, businesses which failed to file before Jan. 1, 1992 are forced to absorb the loss. Mr. Soetens introduced a bill in the House of Commons last Wednesday calling for an exten- sion of the rebate deadline. "I believe this is simply a .matter of tax faintness," says Mr. Soetens. "We implemented a new tax and should be willing to give business a chance to adjust." He says a number of compa- nies here have complained to flim about the filing deadline and, "In talking to fellow MPs, I've discovered this problems is not uncommon to my riding." The rebate applies to the old manufacturers' sales tax paid to Ottawa by merchants prior to the implementation of the GST. Mr. Soetens's bill must be drawn from a pool before it can . be debated. The next draw is at the end of November. Nuclear plant staff may face job losses' PICKERING - Certain employees at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station face an uncertain future in the wake of Ontario Hydro's planned staff cutbacks. Up to 2,000 jobs could be eliminated in Ontario as the cor- poration attempts to trim its 1993 budget by $115 million. Specifi- cally targeted are service and support departments, such as cor- porate relations and human resources. Whether any of the Pickering plant's approximate 1,500 employees are on the chopping block isn't yet known, says infor- mation officer Jack Muir. "There are all kinds of rumors, studies and proposals; it's just at that stage," he says. "It's a time of uncertainty. The only reassur- ing thing is that Ontario Hydro is a responsible company." The utility is the town's largest employer, and pays the municipality $3 million annually in taxes. A hiring freeze is in effect and the company is considering a special retirement package and voluntary tcrmination allowances, sa% Ont!r;. ,'.r. chairman Marc Eliesen. Further decisions on the impending staff cutbacks are expected to be made during a board of directors' meeting in mid-October, says Mr. Muir. Ontario Hydro cites a reduced demand for electricity and cus- tomer complaints over large rate increases as reasons for reduc- tions in both its capital budget and its operations, maintenance and administration budget. Environment minister Pauline Browes, solicitor general Doug Lewis, transport minister Shirley Martin and small business and tourism minister Tom Hockin joined Ontario Riding MP Rene Soetens and Durham MP Ross Stevenson in appealing to area res- idents to get out to vote in the Oct. 26 national constitutional referen- dum. At a Wednesday breakfast meeting held by the Whitby Rotary -Sunrise Club, Mrs. Browes said Canadians are, indeed, "living in historic times". The Scarbor- ough MP pleaded with fellow counwvnien to have their say on the nation's future. "I'm concerned that people might think they're too busy to vote.'. The federal government does not have a plan in place in the event that Canadians reject the deal, said Mr. Lewis, because a back-up plan isn't needed. "I'm confident that people will support (the unity deal).,, The cabinet ministers pointed out that the United Nations cited Canada as the best country in the world to live in. Mrs. Martin told a gathering of local Progressive Conservatives that she's on the ministerial tour to listen to people's concerns about the constitutional agreement, and whatever else is on their minds. Mr. Hockin suggested putting the national unity issue to rest will help spur the faltering economy. Her husband admitted leaving a Bible class early on the evening of her murder and luring his 23 -year-old wife from their O'Dell Ct. home in Ajax by telling her he had a flat tire. When she arrived to help him on Lakeridge Rd. north of Rossland Rd. on the Ajax -Whitby border, he got into her car and shot her twice in the heart. Followed by Maurizio Crupi, a 19 -year- old accomplice from Weston, Mr. Lopez- Farfan then drove to an Ajax bank where he withdrew money from an instant teller to create an alibi. The pair put a spare tire on the victim's car at a Scarborough gas Murdered for insurance money station and abandoned her vehicle on Twyn Rivers Dr. on the Pickering -Scarborough border. Mrs. Lopez's pants, underwear, socks and shoes were removed and her shirt and bra were pushed up to make it look as though she had been assaulted by a passer- by. She was reported missing by her hus- band shortly after midnight. Following her :murder, Mr. Lopez-Farfan moved to Heatherwood Rd., also in ajar. During a police investieauon which Mrs. Lopez had seven separate life insurance p o l i c i e s totalling $429,000, Mr. Lopez-Farfan denied involve- ment in her murder. (In court, Mr. Lopez -Far - fan, now 27, said "greed and stupidity led me to commit a crime which I deeply regret.") The truck driver's mid-June arrest fol- lowed a May drug raid in which a gun seized was discovered to be the murder weapon. It was traced to Mr. Crupi who had traded it for drugs. He admitted being paid S5,000 to help Mr. Lopez-Farfan mur- der his wife and is now serving nine years in a federal penitentiary. Although "the pre-trial judge made com- ments on the enormous amount of evidence against (Mr. Lopez -Farfan)," the guilty plea "was something that came up at the last minute," Mr. Willis says. According to the Toronto firefighter, the preliminary trial judge "suggested (defence lawyer Morris Nanning) should discuss with his client the issue of parole, the impact of a trial on Patricia's family, and payers. Mr. Lopez- Farfan's guilty plea "saves the family a lot of grief," Mr. Willis admits. The trial, expected to last at least six weeks, could have seen as many as 100 witnesses, Mr. Manning told court Tuesday when arguing his client showed "remorse" by pleading guilty. According to Mr. Willis, family mem- bers weren't swayed by an apology in which Mr. Lopez-Farfan said, "I took away Patricia's life, someone who deserved to live more than I do ... I have asked the Lord to help alleviate your pain." Mrs. Lopez's family "expected tears would be coming out of his eyes," Mr. Willis admits. "He's been an actor and a con for so long. It was just another display of what we've seen from him before." Still, the family trusted him until his arrest. "When police asked us whether he was a potential suspect, we said, 'No way.' We later asked why we hadn't recognized those signs. But he was family and we trusted him as much as anyone else" after the couple's 1988 marriage. a good relationship with her in-laws, as demonstrated by the affection shown between them before an hour-long trial in which Mr. Lopez-Farfan was sentenced to life in prison, without eligibility for parole for 25 years. "They loved Patricia as much as we did," Mr. Willis explains. "They too were devastated by the outcome of what's gone on ... Why should 1 chastise them? They are victims just as we are." Since the murder of Mrs. Lopez, mem- bers of her family have become involved in actions against violence and are working with various women's groups. Mrs. Willis Cops, Crown win family's praise and Durham Regional Police will present a forum on Women and Safety Saturday, Oct. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Amberlea Presbyterian Church, 1820 Whites Rd., Pickering. There's no charge. The seminar isn't intended just for women, according to Mr. Willis, who hopes men and teenagers will attend as well. For more information, call 839-1383. Without a full deck When the provincial government rolled the dice and announced earlier this year that legalized gambling casinos may be on their way to Ontario, the NDP tolled snake eyes in the minds of some Ajax and Pickering councillors. A vocal minority of civic leaders in our two communities expressed opposi- tion to legalized gambling Monday night, one going as far as to suggest his town not even send a representative to an information session on casinos next Tuesday in Toronto. Ajax Ward 1 councillor Frank Schaper told colleagues he's opposed to town deputy clerk Joe Tiemay attending the meeting of the Ontario Casino Project Team set up by the provincial govermenL He said sending Mr. Tiiernay to the meeting is "totally unnecessary. People have been to casinos and they know what they're abouL" But, Ward 4 councillor Jim McMaster said sending Mr. Tiemay is "strictly designed as a fact -funding mission. Let's at least make an informed decision rather than hiding our heads in the sand. - Mr. McMaster has the winning hand over Mr. Schaper in that argument The town of Ajar should send a representative to the meeting so councillm can be armed with all the information they can get before ruling on casinos. Unfortunately, Mr. Schaper and Pickering councillors Eileen Higdon and Enrico Pistnuo have already made up their minds. Councillor Schaper pro- posed a mouon that Ajax council go on record saying the town "does not sup- port the (establishment) of gambling casinos within the town of Ajax nor in any other community in the province of Ontario.' He argued, "If we polled resi- dent.s...I dare say 100 per cent would vote against" casino gambling here. We think mane Ajacians who go to Las Vegas and Atlantic City regularly might have a different opinion. And, councilkmrs Higdon and Pistritto will ask their Pickering colleagues on Oct. 5 to oppcxe casinos because they "destroy the moral fabric of a community and provide a negative temptation for those who have the least amount of money." Lotteries and church bingos can also provide that "negative tempta- tion" but do we really want to ban them' Councillor Schaper noted gambling .:an become an addiction much like alcohol or drug use. Thom Installations - for renovations you can trust By I.e.%lie Flint In tough economic times. many homeowners are finding it makes much more economic sense to renovate, as opposed to moving. Whether their restoration project encompasses upgrading windows or building a small addition, E. Thom Installations Inc. of Ajax is there to provide first- rate workmanship at a reasonable cost. !Established in 1981. E. Thom Installations' owner Eric Thom is a certified Pella contractor. }laving worked for the Hunt and Pella firm - which produces one of the top wooden windows on the market - for years before branching out on his own, Eric receives intense training in order to be certified to install the products and keep up to date on the latest developments in the industry. These include such items as blinds located between double glazed glass. Anyone having wrestled with dusting venetian blinds would certainly welcome such a feature. Eric's business involves "primarily windows, but I do a little bit of everything: patio doors, brick knock -outs, solariums, basements, steel replacement doors and replacement glass " By providing a full line of vinyl and aluminum products at competitive prices, "the customer ends up getting the jobs virtually at cosL I can buy the products much :I N Eric Thom, of E. Thom Installations, in Ajax; tel. 427-9737. cheaper than the homeowner can, and labor costs are more reasonable now. It's therefore cheaper to undertake a project now than it was two to three years ago," Eric notes. Making a comeback from the 1950s and `60s are glass blocks. As Eric explains, "They are architecturally appealing and can make a bathroom or hallway more secure while still allowing light to filter in" Other trends include vinyl and aluminum frames in virtually any color imaginable for either indoor or outdoor use although "wood provides better insulation. Many people prefer to go with the aluminum outside, which is pretty well maintenance -free, while having wood installed inside. We can provide the wood frames in clear pine so that it easily adapts to any type of stain or paint to match an interior." Not one to shy away from smaller jobs, Eric finds -many customers opt to do a few windows at a time over a period of three or four years. They'd rather spend a little at a time. I'm not the least bit opposed to that and it's nice to know I'll have a client for a few years too." Working closely with Ontario Ilydro's rebate program, E. Thom Installations can help the homeowner obtain specially treated glass to repel sunlight in the summer and reduce heat loss in the winter. With a choice of either energy- efficient low E -type glass or heat mirror glass, environmentally concerned customers can convert their homes to take advantage of the cost-saving benefits. Offering a five-year warranty on his work, Eric is a firm believer in service. "I've gone back to a job that was done nine years ago! For the sake of an hour and a satisfied customer, it's worth it." The Pella Corporation also backs all windows and doors for five years with its own guaranty. E. Thom Installations is currently offering reductions on fall bookings by skimming prices on labor to pass along further savings to those seeking to increase the value of their home sweet home. J.D. The long-time trainer of the Panthers signed on with the club in its inaugural year of 1972. And, in this, the 20th year of the Metro junior 'A' hockey Panthers, Ramage has returned to the team after a six-year hia- tus. He left the club in 1985 after disagree- ments with the team's management of that time, but Ramage says he's glad to be back with the club. "Bill Barber (the team's new president) talked me into coming back and I said 'Sure, why not?'," says the 62 -year-old trainer. "I've been with them 14 of their 20 years, although I never missed too many games when I wasn't working for them." Ramage, a member of St. John Ambu- lance, signed on as the Panthers' trainer at the urgings of owners Joe Wilks, Don Yarrow and Mitch Griffiths, who'd decided over a few beers to start a junior 'B' club in Picker- ing in 1972. Durinlo most of his 15 years, Ramage was on the job six days a %Leek for practices and cam; <. ? the team Lra:lled to Kingston, it turf,.'. t a n -da% -a-u eek chore. Glenn Healy Glenn Healy played with his hometown Panthers in 1979-80 and 80-81. He then earned a scholarship with Western Michigan, and eventually signed - with the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent. He's now with the New York Islanders. Ray Payne ALSO: Calgary Flames Joe Nieuwendyk played with the Panthers in the 1983-84 season. He was a member of the Flames' '89 Stanley Cup team ... Goalie Doug Dadswell, who played with the _ Panthers in the early 10s, also had a stint with the Flames. Ray Payne coached the Panthers to the Metro Junior 'B' championship in '85. He remained Pan- thers' head coach through the 1988-89 sea- son. Payne's now the eastern scouting director for the NHL's San Jose Sharks But, Ramage never regretted his commitment to the club through the years. "Oh, I loved it. Hell yeah, it was great," says Ramage, who was a 10 - time junior 'B' all-star trainer. "I really liked working with the kids. The kids would tell me stuff they wouldn't even tell their parents." Ramage recalls the first year of the 'P.M.A. Realty' Panthers in the 1972- 73 season. He worked under Panthers' first head coach Bob Duncan, a former minor pro player in Quebec who also had a stint with the Rochester Ameri- cans of the American Hockey League before turning to coaching. About 40 or 50 Pickering teens tried out for the Panthers at the team's first- ever training camp with a strong nucle- us of local boys filling the roster, recalls Ramage, Among the team lead- ers in 1972 were Joey Kowal, Bert Vemoy, Hugh Burgess, Jim Snetsinger and Tom Williams, who "got things going in the dressing ] l room", says Ramage. But, the one kid who stood out for Ramage was working rugged left winger Rocci the kids PagneI lo. "He was one of the would tell best. That guy could go into the corners with four stuff the guys and still come out wouldn't with the puck." In 1972-73, Duncan tell their guided the Panthers to a sixth-place finish, which parents gave the club a berth in the playoffs. However, SCO the Panthers were rocked b a strong Belleville BobraLs team in the first round of the junior 'B' playoffs. But, Ramage and others recognized the season as a building block for things to come. Ramage recalls the crowds at Pan- thers' home games in the first year were relatively small in the beginning, with about 100 people in the stands of the newly -erected Art Thompson Arena which served as the Panthers' home for their first year. But, after the club began to win and improve, the fans started to pour in. For most games, the line-ups to get in overflowed out into the parking lot. The next big step in the growth of the Panthers was the hiring of Sher- wood 'Sherry' Bassin for the 1973-74 season. Bassin possessed a wealth -of coaching experience in the U.S. and Canada. Almost overnight, he pro- pelled the 'Sheridan Mall' Panthers into contenders. Ramage describes Bassin as a stick- ler for discipline. "Sherry was a real good coach. He knew how to get the kids in shape. He was a tough disci- plinarian. When they came off the ice, they knew they had been through a practice." That year, the team moved to the Don Beer Arena and the fan support was never better. The Panthers were greeted with packed crowds every Fri- day night. And, after the games, the booster club was overflowing upstairs at the arena. "We used to fill Don Beer Arena every Friday night," recalls Ramage. "When I was finished in the dressing room (after the game) I would go up to the booster club and I wouldn't be able to get a seat." Bassin guided the Panthers to first place in the Metro Junior `B' league in 1973-74 with a record of 34 wins, six Pickering PANTHERS Metro Junior Hockey Club, losses and four ties for 72 points. After winning hard-fought series over the Belleville Bobcats and the Oshawa Legionaires to win their divi- sion, the Panthers were stopped in the league championship series by the powerhouse St. Michael's Buzzers. Bassin coached his last year with the Panthers in 1974-75 and again the team finished first in its division, but fell short of a league championship in the playoffs. That year, the Panthers produced their first 50 -goal man — centreman Steve Faulkner. Ramage still has the battered red Titan hockey stick Faulkn- er used to score his liked 50th goal — the one and only stick he used With all year. . The All the guys signed y it and he gave it to me me," recalls Ramage. "I saw him about six y months ago and I asked him if he wanted it t even back, but he said 'Keep r it; it's your trophy',"m says Raage. ' Bassin went on to prominence with the SCOTTY RAMAGE OHL major junior league's Oshawa Gen- erals as a coach and general manager as well as being a pivotal part of the national junior hockey program. He was one of the key architects of the big trade which brought Eric Lindros to the Generals two years ago. He"s now the general manager of the Sault Ste. Marie Grey- hounds. Ramage has worked with some good hockey players over the years. Among the best was goalie Glenn Healy who played with his hometown Panthers in 1979-80 and 80-81, before earning a scholarship with Western Michigan, and eventually winding up in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings and now with the New York Islanders. "Healy was a hell of a guy. I think he was number one. His attitude was super and I think 60 per cent of a good hockey player is attitude." As well, Whitby's Joe Nieuwendyk Played with the Panthers during the 1983-84 season before going on to be a star with the Calgary Flames. The Panthers' big year was the 1985 campaign. Under head coach Ray Payne, the club won the Metro league title, and were put out in the first round -by the Streetsville Derbys in the Ontario playdowns. Payne coached the Panthers until 1989, and is now a scouting director with the NHLs San Jose Sharks. While the Panthers went through a rough six-year period of poor fan sup- port and mediocre teams following their championship year of 1985, Ram - age says the team is in good hands with the current owners and coaches. He's confident the organization is on the road to restoring its image as a powerhouse junior hockey operation. "It may take a couple of years, but if we can get the people to support us, it would help a lot," he says. really 0 6 a V 0 0 0 u Ajax Pony Club's Steven Towrie guides his horse Max -A -Mil- lion over a jump during the Central Ontario Region Show Jumping Championships at Audley Road Stables in Ajax last Sunday. These days, Fraser's "enjoying" a lower profile as the One Man Boogie Band, playing local bars such as Morgan's Place in Pickering and Joker's in Ajax and entertaining at company parties and special occa- sions, including a Halloween dance next month at Annandale Golf and Country Club. During the '60s and '70s, Fraser played with such acts as Lionel Hampton, Wayne Cochrane, Ronny Hawkins, Duke Ellington and Gladys Knight and the Pips. For a time, the band he was in, The Fables, was managed by the king of the Las Vegas strip, Wayne Newton. The Fables included high school friends of Fraser — Gerry Smith, Keri Crossman and Jim Seed. At vari- ous times while together, the group's name was The Fables, The Four Fables, and Gerry Smith and The Fables. In 1959, the band began travelling together, starting at small clubs and working its way up to places like the Flamingo and Fremont Hotels in Las Vegas and the Peppermint Lounge in New York City. Although the band stayed together until 1972, it never had a big hit, not even in the two years it was managed by Wayne Newton. "He started in the same hotel as us in Las Vegas, the Fremont Hotel downtown. We bumped into him everyday and we had coffee," recalls Fraser. "After he got into the big time, he came back and signed us up. "He was basically an ordinary guy. He was always a Tittle different because of his high voice." The Fables were the first band Newton signed and he used the group as his opening act for a time. "But. then he got out of that, the manage- ment business. It was costing him to be in that," says Fraser. At one point, Ncwton "got us into a studio in L.A., with a big band and ;,harts, but nothing ever came of it." The group broke up in 1972 because of "internal problems, egos." After the split, Fraser started a couple of bands, but they didn't work out. In 1973, he came back to Canada and played with Ronny Hawkins. "I was down in Arizona. I had a Cadillac and that was about all 1 had. I didn't have a band or a job. I called him up. 1 didn't have to ask for a job; he offered it to me." After performing with The Hawk for a short time, Fraser got out of the music business until the late 1970s. It died out, I suppose, because of the crunch the recession of 1981-82). That's when DJs started to come around." Fraser saw some one: -man bands and 1 thought I could do that. So I did. To me, it's a good challenge. I've always been basically kind of shy and it's scary to kind of try. I did it and it ended up okay. I'm enjoying it." As a solo act, Fraser plays tenor saxophone, guitar, harmonica, bass pedal, flute and banjo. Although he has a stuttering prob- lem, Fraser also sings. That isn't a problem, he says. "Talking is talking, singing is singing. Thank God." In 1972, Fraser met country star Mel Tillis, who also stutters when he talks but is fine while he's singing. "We were sitting at a table in a bar spitting on each other. He ;aid 'Either you're putting mc: on or I'm putting you on'." In the '60s and '70s. Fraser was influenced by the musical styles of the southern United States and musi- cians such as J.J. Cale and Delbert McClinton. Today, he plays "a little bit of everything", including rock 'n' roll from all eras, blues, jazz and bluegrass. Fraser has lived in Pickering for five years with Jenny, his wife of 17 years. He also works at pinsuiping cars in Scarborough. Fraser likes the low -profile musi- cal life he has now. "I'm enjoying it more than I use to in the old days. I guess it's cuz I'm older and I appreci- ate being paid for playing now. Before, it was more like a game, a big party. SS!'TlEbtM A.IM Movies E Script, cast makes Last of Mohicans a hit By JOHN DUARTE Special Ifaintly remember my intro- duction to The Last of the Mohicans. It was the old TV show and I was a child. Like all children, boys especial- ly, the fascination with all things western and of the frontier days, Indians and tomahawks, kept me glued to the TV set when Hawkeye and his Mohican companion Chingachgook spun out their week- ly adventures. Also like children, The Last of the Mohicans television series was something I had all but forgotten. I renewed my interest in The Last of the Mohicans last year when I heard another film version of the .lames Fenimore Cooper frontier classic was being made, this time by Michael Mann. The director captured everyone's attention a few years back with his stylish Miami Vice television series which spawned fashion trends, pop- ularized music stylings and gave just about everyone a good jolt with its 70 -plus violent acts packed into a one-hour show. I'll admit it, I liked Miami Vice not so much for its con- tent as for Mann's way of telling a story. The director brings that stylish storytelling to The Last of the Mohicans. Mann says he "wanted history to become as vivid and real and immediate as if it were being lived right now." This film accom- plishes what the director set out to do. The reason why The Last of the Mohicans works well on the big screen is due in part to the strength of the script. Mann and co -screen- writer Christopher Crowe have taken the time to bring the Cooper characters to life. The realism is in the fact that characters don't waiver, but remain true to their actions throughout the film. The Last of the Mohicans centres around the siege of Fort William :Henry and its fall from British to French hands. In the midst of the storm is a frontier scout named Hawkeye, who from the age of two was raised by Chingachgook, one of the last of the Mohican Indian tribe. The conflict crosses the paths of Hawkeye with the daughter of the Fort William Henry's commander, Colonel Munro. Amidst the strife and the pressures of war, develops a story of lovers enduring cultural and class barriers. A bit trite, but it real- ly does work folks. Like I mentioned above, Mann took great care in making the char- acters as three-dimensional as possi- ble. A strong cast was needed to do justice to the story. Mann's choice for Hawkeye was British actor Daniel Day -Lewis. With his long, tangled, jet-black hair and chiselled upper body, Day - Lewis fits the image of Hawkeye perfectly. The versatile actor never waivers in his characterization and his accent, a combination of his British parentage and Americanized settler drawl, is believable to the .end. Hawkeye's love interest, Cora Munro, is played by Madeleine Stowe. Stowe's Cora shows strength of character without losing her fem- ininity. The other strong casting choice was Cherokee actor Wes Studi in the role of the Huron Magua, whose s deep hatred for Colonel Munro puts both Cora and Hawkeye in jeopardy. Magua is a bloodthirsty villain and Studi makes him one of the best (or worst) bad guys in recent movie his- tory. Finally, there is the beauty of this film. The Last of the Mohicans was shot almost entirely outdoors in the forests of North Carolina and there is some remarkable camera work in evidence by cinematographer Dante Spinotti. The Last of the Mohicans is a good piece of movie making by a talented director and featuring some good acting performances. It doesn't disappoint. Effortlessly passing through customs, you order a drink, grab a towel and settle down by the pool with a good book. You're tired of reading. And it's a the island republic is to anticipate problems before they happen, not after it's too late. New terminals and runways are built because they are needed, when they are needed. For an important decision to be tied up in bureaucratic red tape for years (decades?) is unacceptable. O h b Singapore airport voted world's best couple of hours before your flight leaves. To watch a movie or get your hair done...? Or perhaps a quick, free, city tour. The choices seem limitless at Changi, Singapore's renowned airport. If this scenario seems too good to be true, don't believe me: believe the U.K.-based magazine Business Traveller, which has voted Changi the world's best airport for each of the past four years - in 1991 with an overwhelming 49 per cent of the vote. Runner-up was Amsterdam's Schipol Airport with 14 per cent. And don't bet against Changi this year, when he industrious Republic of Singapore will spend 5200 mil- lion, if you can believe it, refurbish- ing what I have described above. After all, their well-worn Terminal 1 is 10 years old, and embarrassingly lags behind the splendor of the recently opened Terminal 2. The renovations, which will be complete by 1994 will include addi- tional transit hotel rooms, a business traveler's lounge and a pool - believed to be the first at any airport in the world. To the average Canadian used to the trials and tribulations of Pearson International Airport, what is most infuriating about Changi is the dammed common sense and foresight exhibited by Singaporeans. Or should I say the lack of common sense and foresight shown by our transit authorities and politicians. It is very simple: Singapore wants your business. And to get it they offer to make you as comfortable as is humanly possible during what is usually the least enjoyable part of travelling. This hell-bent dedication to ser- vice is what has made Singapore a true capitalist haven, where taxes and duties have gone the way of the dinosaur and service is spelled with a capital S. We want your business: No reasonable offer refused. This is why business and conven- tion travel in Singapore is booming, while in Toronto it declines. In Singapore, you're a somebody! Upon arrival at Changi, airport officials boast that within one hour of stepping off the plane you will be resting comfortably in your hotel room. I clocked in at 50 minutes - a shorter time than what it often takes just to pass through customs at Pearson. Our luggage had reached the conveyer before we did. And don't get the idea that Charigi is in a low -traffic zone. More than 24 million passengers currently pass through the airport in a year, with 1,900 flights a week linking 53 countries around the world with Sinaarwe. But the rule of thumb in t n t e su sect of runways, it should be men- tioned that Changi has one that is par- ticularly unique: the access road into the airport. Adorned in the median with thou- sands of beautiful plants and flowers, the road can be cleared in "13 minutes" by soldiers from the adjacent military base to make an emergency landing strip in case of disaster or war. Lest we make Singaporeans out to be too altruistic, it should be pointed out that their real motive is to take every last one of your dol- lars. But pleasantly. Thus there are 96 shops in the airport that are happy to cater to your last-minute shopping needs. But in true Singapore fashion, shoppers are given a Customer Satisfaction Card guaranteeing competitive prices and quality products. Hungry? There are nine restau- rants, including an ice cream parlor. Bars? No problem. Other services include money changing, banking and postal, direct telephone service around the world, as well as photo developing, hair styling, and even a supermarket. Business travellers are offered all the amenities; fitness buffs can workout, shower and sauna at the fitness centre: and there is a play- ground and nursery for children, as well as a theatre and "vidiwall" - a wall -size television screen. As well, disabled travellers have access to specially designed tele- phones, toilets, ramps and elevators. Travel to and from the airport is quick and easy, though there is no subway link -up. The airport is ser- viced by two snarl -free highways and bus and taxi service. Most tours offer free hotel transfers. New Severn paddle cruises Leisurely cruises aboard a new 30 -cabin paddle wheeler will be available for the first time on England's River Severn.
