Edwin Lopez-Farfan, 27, told the family of Patricia Anne Lopez in a Toronto courthouse that "greed and stupidity led me to commit a crime which 1 deeply regret." The Heatherwood Cres. resident was sentenced to life in prison, and isn't eligible for parole for 25 years. Mrs. Lopez was 23 when she was found shot to death in the back seat of her car April 12, 1991 on Twyn Rivers Dr. at the Pickering -Scarbor- ough border. She had been reported missing the previous day by her hus- band. During yesterday afternoon's hour- long trial, Crown Attorney John McMann recounted events that led to Mr. Lopez -tartan's arrest. After marrying in the summer of 1988, the couple lived in Oshawa before moving to O'Dell Ct. in Ajax. They remained there until the murder of Mrs. Lopez. Court heard Mr. Lopez was working as a truck driver when he met 19-year-oki Mario Crupi, who would later plead guilty to conspira- cy to commit murder. In February 1991, Mr. Lopez-Farfan told Mr. Crupi, a Weston resident, that he wanted to buy a gun, the Crown revealed. Mr. Crupi gave him a 25 - calibre, semi-automatic gun in return for 56,000 worth of paint stolen by Mr. Lopez-Farfan. The pair met on several Patri occasions to discuss plans to murder Mrs. Lopez, but never fol- lowed through, court was told. In early April 1991, Mr. Lopez-Farfan offered Mr. Crupi 55,000 to help him murder his wife on April 10. That night, Mr. Lopcz-Farfan went to a prayer meeting at 7:30, while his wife stayed at home. He left the meeting early and met Mr. Crupi at a around 9. The pair drove together to O'Dell CL where they removed a spare Luo from Mr. Lopez-Farfan's white Ford Topaz and placed it in the couple's brown Honda Accord. They then drtwe in the Topaz to a retail store where Mr. Lops -Far - fan phoned his wife around 10:40 p.m. claiming he had a flat tire and was stranded in north Ajax. Basement tenants saw Mrs. Lopez leave home in the Accord around 10:45 pm. with her dog. She drove to Lakeridge Rd. north of Rosslarrd Rd. and pulled up behind her husband's car. Mr. Lopez-Farfan was carrying a gun when he entered his wife's car . reported Mr. McMann. He shot her twice at close range in the upper chest, the bullets hitting her heart Afar putting her body in the rear seat of the Accord, Mr. Lopez -Far - fan covered her with a coat. Mr. Crupi followed him to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce on Harwood Ave. where Mr. Lopez- Farfan withdrew money from an instant teller. The Crown said he did so to "create a false alibi.- Mr. Lopez -Farfara and Mr. Crupi drove to a Scarborough gas station where they placed the spare lire on the Accord he TCrown said Mrs. Lopez's Pans, underwear, socks and shoes were removed and her shirt and bra were pushed up and her breasts exposed "to look as though she was assisted by a passerby and assault- ed". Her p m was found empty. Mr. Crupi followed Mr. Lopez- Farfan to Twyn Rivers Dr. where they perked the Honda. Mr. Crupi then drove Mr. Lopez-Farfan home and took the murder weapon. Mr. Lopez-Farfan reported his wife missing to Durham Regional Police shortly after midnight. In May 1991, a gun seized during a drug raid was sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences, where it was dis- covered to be the murder weapon. The gun was traced to Mr. Crupi who had traded it for two grams of cocaine. He "readily admitted" to his involvement in the murder and was arrested by police, Mr. McMann reported. Mr. Crupi's now serving nine years in a federal peni- tentiary. Mr. Lopez-Farfan was arrested June 20, 1991. During the investiga- tion, police discovered Mrs. Lopez had seven separate life insurance policies totalling S429,000. Mr. McMann said the last policy of S l 01,0W was taken out in Februan 1991. in a victim impact statement read to the Lopez court, Mrs. Lopez's moth- er Lucette Theriault of Oshawa asked, "Why was I not there to pro- tect her when she needed me the most`'" She said her daughter, the youngct of six chikiren, was "gen- uine, caring, giving and loving" and that she missed most "her demon- strative affection." Mrs. Theriault admitted having a "gaxi relationship" with her daugh- ter's husband and says she saw him "almost every day" following the murder. Following Mr. Lopez-Farfan's rr aest, Mrs. Theriault felt a "deep sense of betrayal" and says her daughter's "cold-blooded murder left our family in a state of shock, disbelief and bew•ilderme:nt." Mrs. Theriault says she can "no longer drive alone on a secluded road without having a vision of Patricia driving to her fate " Defence lawyer Morris Manning argued his client "demonstrates as much remorse (by pleading guilty) that could ever be expreswd", sav- ing the victim's family the anguish of a lengthy trial. Mr. Lopez-Farfan addressed his former wife's family, who broke down in tears several times. He apologized for taking away the life "of someone who deserved to live more than I do ... If 1 could bring her back to you I would. If I could even just trade places with her, I would." Calling the case "horrible (and) tragic," Mr. Justice Edward Then said he had "no choice in the penalty which must be imposed" He complied with Mr. McMarrn's request that Mr. Lopez- Farfan be prdubited from ever pos- sessing a weapon, ammunition or explosive. "As serious and as brutal as the crihas been, I do appreciate that you have taken the first step to reha- bilitation by what you have said in open court," Mr. Justice Then told Mr. Lopez-Farfan. cia CPRO)-=AUTO GLASS and TRIM WMEELD MLACROT YOUR WINDSHIELD We pay the $50.00 Deductible COSTS YOU PLUS we give you x.00 Cash Back! So, we're run- ning the story in its entirety. Our apologies for the foul-up. AJAX - At least six homes — five on Humphrey Dr. and one on Hawkins Cres. — were broken into during the late hours of Sept. 16 or early hours of Sept. 17. In most cases, the robbers were after women's purses, although some other items were also taken. Durham Regional Police Staff Sergeant Sande Ryric says its a "good possibilitN" the same peo- ple committed all the break-ins. One man who didn't want to be identified says he and his fiancee were at home sleeping when their house was broken into. He adds they didn't know they'd been robbed until they heard the police in a neighbor's backyard at 3 a.m. "We didn't hear a damn thing. They came in the kitchen window and went out the patio doors," he says. "It's quite unsettling. The worse part is it's not the first time." Installation of sewers in Pickering Beach area under way next week AJA? - Pickering Beach sewer installation will begin next week. The tint phase of the four-year project will include all of Seabreeze Rd., most of Poplar Ave.. and part of Ruthel Rd. Ajax and Durham region will Split the S441,8(X) cost, with the region paving S278,84-4.15 and the town S162,955.85, the latter approved by Ajax council Mon- day. Town works director Frank Hull says most of the work will be completed by Dec. 20, with some finishing work to be done next year. Earlier this year, the town approved a four-year plan to install sanitary sewers in the Pick- ering Beach area and reconstruct roads to a Waal standard, which includes ditches but not curbs. The town pays for reconstruct- ing the roads, while the region picks up the tab for sanitary sew- ers. Targa Construction of Downsview won the $373.088.46 contract for the entire project. Other costs, such as engineering, contingencies and utility reloca- tion, increase the project total to $441,800. The work will begin at the easterly portion of Seabreeze and move westerly to Poplar. Work on Poplar will extend from Beachview almost to Rangeline Rd., while construction on Ruthel will be half the dis- tance from Seabreeze to Range - line. The man says this is the thi time in a month the couple's robbed. The first time was fo weeks ago when thieves bro into a trailer and took tools. second robbery was two wee ago when the man had a car up blocks and thieves stole th wheels and rims. In the latest robbery, thiev took a small amount of mono identification and keys to eve thing the couple owns. They have had to change all th locks on their house and vehicle and have bought an alarm system. The three robberies have co the couple about S_5,500, includin items taken, paving insuranc deductibles, changing locks an buying the alarm system. Replacing pieces of identifica tion will take more than tw weeks to replace and causes a "lo of inconvenience", he says. The man refers to the robberies as "big time. It's not just kids This is too much for kids to b doing. It's not just kids out doing it for a lark." Other home: it the arca have ettling rd been broken into in the past, he been says, saying one man had a pick- ir up truck stolen, while car phones ke and stereos have also been taken. The While he didn't have any num- ks bers, the man says there are "a lot on of break and enters. A lot." C Ajax is a bedroom community, he says, and "people may be a lit - es tle lax or naive as to what's going y, on." every The man says some of the peo- ple on Humphrey are talking of e forming a Neighborhood Watch S group. The most recent break-ins are cos "a perfect example of the need for g Neighborhood Watch," says Sgt. e Ryric. J .,If anyone sees anyone suspi- cious on the street, they should - call 911," Sgt. Ryrie says. "Don't o attempt to tackle the person. Call t 911." A relatively inexpensive safety device (about S20) a homeowner can install is a motion -detection e light, Sgt. Ryric says. To the editor, On August 15, 1967, a man armed with a shot gun killed nine people, among them seven chil- dren from the same family, in a village in Saskatchewan. One vear ester, the verdict was not guilty, for the accused was declared in --sane. Twenty four years later, the assassin is still alive, and is allowed to leave from time to time the lunatic asylum located in Ontario where he remained con- ftned for all those years. As we see, justice, society are on criminals' side — justice pro - The News Advertiser wel- comes letters to the editor on topical issues, controversial matters and anything else of interest to our readers. They've been forgotten for a long time. In this example, we clearly see that the life of a criminal, mad on top of that, is more important than the life of nine people cowardly assassinat- ed. It's obvious that capital punish- ment, (abolished by the Trudeau government in 1976) must be testored. Because the murder of people, especially the murder of innocent children can't remain unrevenged. Every citizen has the right to live, but no one has the right to take away someone's life PUD without being judged and executed. The state must have the right to condemn murderers to the gallows. That's justice of course, to maintain justice is a great responsibility. But no political party is willing to take this responsibility. Especially the Liberal Party and Dan McTeague, one of the Liberal candidates in the Ontario riding. McTeague said, "Capital punishment leaves blood in the hand of the state." (News Advertiser, Aug. 21, 1992). McTeague prefers to let injustice go on. Mac Rebennack explores his musical roots, over a hundred years of fine New Orleans' barrelhouse and 'junkie' blues, Dixieland, 'funky butt' and 'gut bucket' jazz from such inspirations as Louis Arm- strong and Jelly Roll Morton. And as he aptly puts it: "This album ain't no Chamber of Commerce ho-hum gig." Rebennack is the real thing and this labor of love may be the album of the year. Barenaked Ladies - Gordon (WEA): Eagerly -awaited major label debut from this terrific Toronto band, which has become a sensation for their name and their music. We already know many of the songs here -- "Be My Yoko Ono," "If I had SI,000.000," Off The Record "Grade 9," etc., but together these and the other 12 songs add up to a compelling collection of "acoustic hip-hop" - great harmonies and melodies, charged with vibrant rhythms and witty, often irrever- ent, lyrics. Long live Gordon. Glenn Frey - Strange Weath- er (MCA): Like a jilted lover, my bitterness towards Glenn Frey knew no bounds; from tequila, desert nights and country rock to Evian, fitness clubs and Motown, Frey's career path post -Eagles left me stone cold. With Strange Weather, I'm warming. It's cer- tainly not The Eagles (nor should it be), but aside from a couple of lame MOR cuts, Frey taps into his roots and delivers an inspired Arts & crafts festival at conservation area PICKERrNG - A fall arts and crafts festival will be held this week- end at the Greenwood Conservation Area, Pickering. Joan Armatrading - Square the Circle (A&M): With very lit- tle pomp or ceremony, Joan Armatrading has been quietly putting out good records for over 20 years. Square, her 15th, is another one. It features 10 original compositions built around under- stated guitar work and characteris- tically introspective lyrics, which generally probe the uncertain side of love: insecurity, jealousy and longing, etc. Once again. The Argos currently sport a record of three wins and eight losses and are currently in the basement of the CFL's Eastern Division. Meyer joined the Argos organization in 1992 as the defensive backs coach under Bob O'Billovich and assumed defensive coordinator duties when Rita was named the head coach in 1991. Under his direction as the defensive coordinator, the 1992 Argo defence leads the CFL in fewest first downs allowed (219) and intercep- tion return yards (428). The club also ranks second in fewest yards total offence allowed (3,758), fewest yards net passing allowed (2,962) and interceptions (20). Meyer has coached stand- out defensive backs Zac Hen- derson, Carl Brazley, Reggie Pleasant, Selwyn Drain and Don Wilson to all -Canadian designation in the league. He's a graduate of Arkansas State University and was a sixth -round selec- tion of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers in 1972. He had a distinguished career as a defensive back and punt returner with the Calgary Stampeders from 1975 to 1977. He returned to Calgary to coach the Stamps' defen- sive backs and special teams for two seasons. Born in Jefferson City, MissouTi, Meyer lives here with his wife Carol, son Jason and daughter Amy. Ben Snape, 14, of Pickering, captured the overall gold medal at the World Age Group Cham- pionships for Trampoline and Tumbling in Auckland, New, ?ealand from Aug. 30 to Sept. 16. Snape competed against ath- letes from 22 other countries in the boys' 13 -and -14 age group. In total, there were 24 other competitors in his category. Snape led after the optional routine, where only the top six advanced to the event finals. In the finals, he was simply unbeatable. He finished 1.9 points ahead of his nearest competitor — an extremely wide margin at an international competition. A French athlete finished in second spot, while an Aus- tralian was third. "He was pretty overjoyed.' says his father Jeff Snape. "It was kind of a vindication for him. It wasn't an accident that he's the best in the province and in Canada. It's great that the rest of the world thinks he's the best too." Snape says his son saw his opportunity to win gold emerge after the optional routine where a number of his chief rivals fell out of the top six. This opened the door for him to put a lock on the title in the event final. "It's a tough competition, so going in there thinking you're going to win would be a little egotistical. But, he was thinking he had a shot," says Jeff Snape. 1.1 k. - Ben Snape The world title represented the crowing jewel on what has been a flawless season by Snape. He won eight individual gold medals at various competitions, including the provincial cham- pionship, the Elite Ontario championship and the national championship in Quebec City in June. Snape was also the silver medalist at the International Invitational trampoline meet in Toronto earlier this year. The Canadian trampoline team finished fourth overall at the worlds, garnering four gold medals in total. Snape will now be setting his sights on repeating his title at the world championships in Portugal in 1994. The 1996 world champi- onships will be held Vancouver, where he also hopes to com- pete. He's a member of the Skyriders Trampoline Place in Richmond Hill.
