Environmentalists promise a fight to save Altona Forest By JUDI BOBBITT Staff Reporter PICKERING - Environmentalists say they'll storm Pickering council chambers tomorrow night in an effort to save the Altona For- est from development. Friends of the Altona Forest and Petticoat Creek say they're "fun- ous" with council's intentions to "expedite- development, and are calling on other concerned residents to join them in the fight to keep the 330 -acre forest from becoming a subdivision. If approved, the development will destroy a significant ecological link between the Rouge Valley and Duffin Crede watersheds, say environmentalists. "While the province is looking at protecting our natural heritage, and other municipalities are striving to restore and improve their nat- ural enviro meets, Pickering council is still determined to destroy this magnificent forest," charges Katherine Murray of Friends of the +Altona Forest. IM, Opinion Give up the cheques The federal bill ending family allowance cheques for wealthy and well-off families has met with an outcry against the sacrilege of ending "universality". In this case, "universality" translates into a system where the govern- ment wastes its resources mailing cheques to people who can't justify being the beneficiaries of government largesse. The federal government then taxes most of the cheque back. This is so blatantly wasteful it's a minor miracle the system has last- ed so long. The original point of family allowance cheques was to help poor par- ents who were just barely getting by. Children were suffering from mal- nutrition; going cold in the winter because they had no warm clothes or boots. Before the age of the computer, when family allowance cheques first went out, it was difficult to implement a program such as family allowance that wasn't universal. Not so now. Families making $50,000 or more in today's economy may not be doing particularly well. But, on the other hand, they're not starving. Under the bill, the working poor, people who are have trouble keep- ing a roof over their heads, food in their children's stomachs and warm boots on their feet, will get more money. That money will be available because richer people won't be getting a few extra dollars a month. In Ottawa, and elsewhere throughout the country, including Ajax and Pickering, there are people who object to that. Some will be genuinely inconvenienced by the bill; some are concerned that more money will not be directed to those on welfare (which is a separate issue); most are just piqued at being deprived of their spending money. "Universality" is selfishness. Putting money where it is needed is the true function of government. By PAM PRYJMA Ajax LACAC AJAX-PICKERING - Pickering's first settler, William Peak, and his wife Margaret arrived in Pickering Town- ship in about 1793. Wildlife thrived in the dense forest, and Duffins Creek was filled with salmon; in fact only a pitchfork was required to spear a meal. Friend of Indians The Peaks settled at the mouth of Duffins Creek, directly across the creek from where Rotary Park is presently located. William constructed a dwelling, presumably made of logs, and cleared land to grow crops. He also built one of the earliest known mills on Duffins Creek. However, the mill, as well as his first house, were consumed by fire at a very early date. William Peak is an important figure in our local history — not only was he our first settler, but he was a fur trader and Indian interpreter. He is described in the 1877 County of Ontario Atlas as a friend of Indian Chief Waukikishko, whose influence extended from the Credit River to the Bay of Quinte. After living on Simcoe Point for many years, William purchased his land in 1807. Despite the hardships the wilderness inflicted, the Peaks man- aged a healthy existence and reared a family of 12 children. He died the following year and the resort and the original Peak home- stead were sold, leaving over 100 years of family ownership. Simcoe House prospered, drawing vacationers from all over Ontario and Quebec. The Great Depression served a devastating blow and it fell into dis- repair. The resort was destroyed by fire in the 1950s and is survived only by charred hydro poles and fruit trees. Home to generations A family burial ground located on the shore of Duffins Creek serves as a reminder of our first settler William Peak, and the generations of Peak- Greenlaws who were born, lived and died on Simcoe Point. A complete record of burials for this small cemetery doesn't exist, as all grave markers were destroyed by vandals about 40 years ago. Around the turn of the century, the bodies of three sailors washed up on shore and the Greenlaw family provided these unidentified young men with a grave in the family cemetery. In recognition of the importance of this site and those who are resting there, the Ajax Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee erected a plaque on the cemetery site last spring. Located a short distance from the lakeshore, and near the creek edge, the plaque includes a brief his- tory of Simcoc Point, of William Peak, and the names and dates of those known to be buried there- WHY here. One of the keys to making all this possible is compatibility, says Bruce Mowery, director of busi- ness markets for Apple Computer Inc. All of Apple's Macintosh computers, for example, can be linked to any MS-DOS system - and for a reason. "This provides you with a ready growth path to the future when you may have anywhere from two to thousands of computers," Mr. Mowery says. ,Individuals and businesses should look for a number of features when purchasing or expanding their computer systems. These features include: *versatility - Since each employ- ee often wears many hats, it's essential to have a computer that performs many functions, includ- ing word processing. accounting and mailing list management. *Built-in networking capability - It can help avoid buying expensive and hard -to -install components later. *Ease of use and sufficient power- "Remember. you can always find a cheap computer. but if it doesn't do what you want - or if you and your employees don't fed comfort- able using it - you haven't gained anything," says Mr. Mowery.
