PICKERING - There's no association between leukemia in children
of male nuclear workers and doses of radiation received by their fathers,
a federal study has found.
The study, just released by the Atomic Energy Control Board, was
undertaken after a researcher in the U. K. reported in 1990 that he'd

"something to be covered up", says a resident.
Council Monday refused Alex Robertson's request to have a
town -appointed auditor scrutinize election receipts of Maurice
Brenner. Rick Johnson and Doug Dickerson.
Mr. Rohertxm. himself a former Pickering councillor, ques-
tioned expenses declared by the three for victory parties, cellular
telephones and brochures during the Nov. 12 municipal elution.
After deducting expenses from campaign donations, candi-

The latest Ontario study
looked at childhood leukemia
cases from 1950 to 1988 near five
nuclear facilities, including the
Pickering plant. Leukemia cases,
including 69 here, were compared
with a large number of children of
the same age, living in the same
areas, who had not contracted the
disease. The radiation exposure of
all fathers was obtained from the
National Dose Registry and
employer records.
Researchers focused on the
effect of radiation exposure on
fathers employed in the nuclear
industry, particularly in the period
before the child's conception.
The study concluded there's no
association between childhood
leukemia and fathers' exposure to
radiation, but the AECB says it
will continue to monitor any fur-
ther developments in research and
is considering supporting animal
studies.
Researchers speculate study
results in the U.K., where elevat-
ed childhood leukemia rates were
found near nuclear fuel reprocess-
ing plants, might be due to inter-
nal radiation exposure from a sub-
stance other than tritium or expo-
sure to toxic chemicals. There are
no nuclear fuel reprocessing
plants in Canada.

DURHAM - Regional coun-
cillors have given themselves a
four -per cent pay hike over the
next three years.
Seventeen of 28 councillors
voted in favor of the raise
Wednesday, arguing the "nomi-
nal" increase of 1.3 per cent a
year would be easier on taxpayers
than playing "catch-up" in the
future.
If council failed to keep up
with inflation by increasing
salaries, `only the wealthy could
run for public office and make
the kind of commitment they
should," argued Newcastle mayor
Dianne Hamre.
A council member's annual
salary from the region will
increase from S21,000 to 521,273
this year. Standing committee
chairs and appointed members of
the police services board, who
earn S3,000 on top of their salary,
will make an extra S39. The
regional chair will see his salary
increase from S75,000 to
575,975.
Councillors also receive pay
from their municipality. In Ajax,
they're paid 517,315 and the
mayor makes S43,289. That
council voted Tuesday to contin-
ue with a pay freeze this year.
In Pickering, councillors earn
$15,479, while the mayor makes
540.741 _
Opponents of the increase,
which is retroactive to Dec. 1,
1991, included Pickering mayor
Wayne Arthurs, and Pickering
councillors Kip Van Kempen and
Maunce Brenner. Rick Johnson
supported the hike, as did Ajax
councillors Roger Anderson,
Susan Dulny and mayor Jim
Witty.

The Greater Toronto Home Builders' Association (GTHBA)
reports 744 new homes sold in August That's an 18 -per cent increase
over sales in July, 1992 and 47 per cent more than August, 1991.
In Pickering, 28 homes sold in August, while 10 sold in Ajax.
GTHBA president Claudio Cinapri attributes the increase to a com-
bination of low mortgage rates, competitive prices and positive con-
sumer reception to the five -per cent down payment and RRSP pro-
grams -
"Given these favorable conditions, we're confident that the upward
trend will continue during September. Sales offices around the GTA
are reporting healthy levels of traffic and increased sales," Mr. Cinapri
says. "We are also expecting a boost from the recent strong perfor-
mance of the resale market- We know that buyers have been extremely
cortcerned about selling their existing home before looking for a new
one, so we're pleased to see a growing pool of confident buyers in the
marketplace.-

Reminding council he had defeated
Mr. Robertson in a 1978 election,
he called the resident "an old politi-
cal war horse who refuses to ride
off into the sunset.
"The real nuts and bolts issue
here...is has anybody broken the
(Municipal Elections) Act?" said
Mr. Dickerson. "No, they have
not.
Also speaking on the subject
were unsuccessful election candi-
date Ken Matheson, who suggested
all candidates be audited, and Phil
Frampton of the Taxpayers' Coali-
tion of Ontario. Mr. Frampton
opposed an audit and suggested
Mr. Robertson take his concerns to
the province. "I hope we don't get
into any negative publicity for the
town of Pickering," he added

son each declared a conflict of
interest on the vote regarding their
own expenses, but opposed an
audit of each others' and Mr.
Dickerson's receipts.
Because of council's refusal to
hire an auditor, Mr. Robertson is
now entitled to take his inquest to
the province. After the vote, he said '
he hadn't made up his mind if he,
would do so.

Everyday people
become our heroes
They're everyday people who were thrust into what have now become
everyday situations.
But, it's the way they reacted that makes them heroic.
The Ajax and Pickering residents honored with civilian citations at the
Durham Regional Police awards night Friday are different from most people.
They're not indifferent: they chose to get involved
Like 15 -year-old Ian Szabo, who was ice fishing on Lake Scugog Jan. 25
when he heard cries for help. He and two other anglers went to the aid of a
snowmobiler who'd crashed and suffered two broken legs and a collapsed
lung. Without the teen's persistence, police Staff Sgt. Bruce Pugh says, "I
think it's safe to say...the victim would have perished."
Then them are Ian Keane and friend Bill Campbell, who helped catch a
man wanted for robbing the Bank of Montrea] in Ajax Jan. 10. After the hold-
up, the two followed the man and later returned to the bank to give police a
good description of the suspect and the licence plate of the getaway vehicle.
Without their quick responses, notes Staff Sgt Pugh, "this robbery may not
have been solved."
And there are Michael Williams and David and Evette Clarke. They came
to the rescue of a senior citizen pushing a shopping cart when she was knocked
to the ground by another woman who attempted to steal her purse -- Mrs.
Clarke comforting the distraught senior and Mr. Clarke giving chase to the
attacker. When the attacker jumped into a car with a male accomplice, Mr.
Clarke flagged down passing motorist Mr. Williams and the two followed the
thugs until they got the licence plates. "Had it not been for the unselfish act of
bravery and caring demonstrated by these citizens, the culprits would no doubt
have escaped apprehension," said Staff SgL Pugh.
Because of the actions of the police awards winners, a life was saved,
crimes and criminals were stopped, thieves and thugs were collared. And,
were all better off because thev live in our community.
Our hat goes off to then and our heartfelt thanks go out to them. They are
our he rws and heroirues. Not overpaid athletes, not famous musicians or movie
stars. Just ordinary folks performing extraordinan• feats.

Gay/lesbian ruling makes mockery of traditional family
To the editor,
The recent decision by the
Supreme Court of this country to
grant same sex couples the same
rights as normal couples shows
the deprhs to which Canadian
judicial morality has degenerated
to these days.
Equating homosexual or les-
bian relationships to a family as
traditionally known, makes a
mockery of the efforts and sacri-
fices a mother and father must
make to properly raise a child in
today's environment. It appears

their current political needs.
This is all being done in order
to comply with the charter of
rights, a retrograde piece of legis-
lation foisted on the country by a
deranged liberal of the '60s, a
piece of legislation which is the
source of many of this country's
current problems. Since then, Par-
liament has abrogated its respon-
sibility to govern, this being done
instead for it by the courts, who
have taken it upon themselves to
"read into" legislation things that
aren't there. In this way, unelect-
ed judges with their own political
agendas make law, instead of the
people we elected for this pur-
pose.
It is unfortunate that this state
of affairs has developed and is
allowed to continue. But it is not
surprising. Politicians certainly
won't be protesting as it makes
their work easier and gives them
more time to spend on retreats,
trips, etc. And the ultimate escape
if people dare to complain, is that
they can say "the court said so"!
I think it is high time that we

Second crossing guard nixed
. PICKERING - A second crossing
guard for school children at an intersection
deemed hazardous was denied by coun-
cil's executive committee Monday.
There's already one guard at the inter-
section of Whites. Rd., Briarwood Gate
and Bayfield St., where town staff report
vehicles turn without stopping for children
because they either don't see the guard or
"raced in front of the children in an
attempt to keep from stopping."
Staff suggested a second guard at the
crossing or "we may very well experience
an accident at this sic."
But town manger Noel Marshall report-
ed to councillors a second guard would
have an impact on future annual budgets
and would represent an increased level of
service for taxpayers. He also noted the
current crossing guard budget is under-
spent because of the difficulty in retaining
guards.
Politicians voted to receive Mr. Mar-
shall's report rather than approve an esti-
mated yearly cost of $5,000 for another
guard.

Stop signs to reduce danger
PICKERING - New stop signs are
planned at several intersections in Picker-
ing neighborhoods.
Approved by council's executive com-
mittee Monday were: a four-way stop at
the intersection of Maple Gate Rd., Tim-
ber Crt. and Trailwood Crt.; a three-way
stop at the northerly intersection of Den -
mar Rd. and Jaywin Circle; and a stop
sign westbound on Brookshire Sq. at
Gablehurst Cres.
A resident had written to the town
complaining motorists who fail to obey a
yield sign at the Denmar Rd.-Jaywin Cir-
cle intersection pose a danger to school
children, and an investigation by the
town found a potential hazard exists for
both motorists and pedestrians.
A stop sign on Brookshire Sq. is
intended to provide better right-of-way
control, while the four-way stop at Maple
Gate Rd., Timber Crt. and Trailwood Crt.
will replace a current three-way stop that
town staff have determined creates a
potential for accidents by causing confu-
sion.

The bake -off is named for Mrs. Isaac (Han-
nah) Linton, who laid the church cornerstone
over 100 years ago and baked 40 pies in a day
to celebrate the event.
Bakerscan make as many pies as they like
and are welcome to enter any and all categories
for which they qualify. Prizes will be awarded,
and winning pies will be auctioned at 3 p.m. by

pastry -lover Rick Johnson, regional councillor
for Ward 3. Also to be auctioned is a multi -col-
ored, "Woodlily" applique quilt.
Between 2 and 3 p.m., residents can savor
coffee and pie at the church for $2.50, while
enjoying the music of The Nipissing County
Boys and The Preacher.
Pie categories open to all bakers are: apple,
other fruit, filled, savoury and chocolate. There

are special categories for junior bakers. (up to
12 years old), senior citizens and men.
Pies should be taken to the church for judg-
ing between I I a.m. and noon on the day of the
contest. All pies will be considered a donation
to the church renovation fund and will either be
sold or auctioned.

Unity deal wins favor of most area politicians

AJAX-PICKERING - Oppo-
nents of the unity deal being put
forward in next month's referen-
dum aren't "enemies of Canada"
and shouldn't be labelled as
such, a Reformer says.
"It's appalling (supporters)
are calling us enemies simply
because we want to read and
understand the deal," says Don
Sullivan, the first-ever Reformer
to run for federal office in
Ontario Riding.
The suggestion that oppo-
nents are enemies of the country
"has upset an awful lot of veter-
ans," says the Ajax resident, who
served in the Korean War for
five years.
Mr. Sullivan says he can't
support the package for several
reasons, including his concern
that proposed veto powers for
Quebec will pave the way for
future hostilities "and it's not
going to be the fault of the peo-
ple in Quebec.
"I'm in favor of Quebec stay-
ing in Canada," he admits. But,
by giving the province veto
rights, politicians "are drawing a
line between Quebec and the rest
of Quebec."
Mr. Sullivan is also critical of
the agreement because "it's only
a framework. Over 50 topics still
.have to be negotiated."
He also objects to "being told
to hold our noses" and support
the package put together by
provincial premiers. "We did
that with the GST and the !forth
American free trade deal. How
many more deals do we have to
do that before we get leadership
in Ottawa`'"
Finally, Mr. Sullivan criti-
cizes spending millions to hold a
national referendum Oct. 26
when its results aren't binding.
He believes the so-called
unity crisis was "manufactured
by politicians who don't know
how, to address the economy. It's
so phony. It really upsets me."
Residents arc being encour-
aged to vote "yes" for the deal,
however, by Ontario Riding MP
Rene Soetens. In an earlier inter-
view, Mr. Soetens said people
should endorse the unity pack-
age, even though he acknowl-
edges it's "not perfect.
"There's some compromise in
all of this; it's not perfect," he
commented. "It's not exactly
written the way I would have
wanted it. I would have reduced
(the number of MPs for) the
provinces that were overrepre-
sented and not increased the
provinces that were underrepre-
sented. We don't need more
MPs."
He also vowed, "I will do my
utmost to make sure people have
the information they need to
make a decision... I'll be encour-
aging people to vote `yes' and
encouraging them to read the
document so they can understand
why they should vote in favor."

rolled back, but I'd have to hear
their arguments," he says.
Federal Liberal candidate Dan
McTeague says people may not
like the amendments, but the
agreement should be ratified.
"We need to get on with the
economy," he says. Voting 'no'
would be an "option too devastat-
ing for the economy. We (Liber-
als) support it unequivocally."
The Liberal supports a referen-
dum, saying the changes should
have the "full sanction of the peo-
ple."
There are areas of concern, he
says, such as not having an elect-
ed Senate and the increased repre-
sentation in the House of Com-
mons.

AJAX-PICKERING - A non-
profit course designed to improve
participants' communication
skills and develop their self con-
fidence is being offered in Ajax
and Pickering.
The Christopher Leadership
Course, which has been offered
in Canada since 1953, covers top-
ics such as dealing with nervous-
ness and developing self confi-
dence; speech reading; public
speaking; introducing and thank-
ing speakers; presenting and
accepting gifts; organizing a talk;
leadership skills and more.
Each course runs for three
hours a night, one night a week
for 10 weeks. It's open to anyone
over the age of 16 and fees cover
the cost of materials only. Cost is
$115 per person, or S 105 for a
second family member, a senior
citizen or a student. Instructors
are trained volunteers.

Warriors repeat as soccer champs
Ajax Upper Deck seniors capture Motor City Soccer League title

the Motor City Soccer League.
The Warriors knocked off a
short-staffed Oshawa Italia squad 5-
0 Tuesday night in Oshawa to
clinch fust place in the standings
and re -capture the
league champi-
onship, their third
title in the last
four years.
Warriors coach
Michael brown says
the drab and miserable weather
Tuesday and the fact the game
ended late didn't allow for much of
a celebration. However, the team
will make up for it Sunday when
the league's championship trophy is
presented.

Ajax started slowly in the con-
test against Oshawa Italia, but the
Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first

ham who broke down the right
wing and made no mistake on the

After regrouping at half-time,
the Upper Deck V1'arno s came out
flying in the second half, scoring
four unanswered goals to seal the
victory. Graham notched his second
of the night, while Dave Campbell,
Peter Pinheiro and newcomer
Marek Woloch, with his first of the
year, scored for Ajax.
Brown says the Warriors had a
tough road to the championship this
season. Most of their games were
close affairs which could have gone
either way. Moreover, Oshawa
teams have been gunning to

PICKERING - A Pickering bowler is aiming to again be the national king-
pin at the Canadian Bowling Championships in Winnipeg which started yester-
day and wrap up Saturday.
Jack Brace, who bowls in Toronto, won the national men's tenpin title in
1990 and is one of the favorites to win this year's event against bowlers from
five other provinces as well as northern Ontario.'
Brace advanced to the World Tenpin Finals in 1990 in Pattaya, Thailand
and finished a respectable fifth.
If Brace can emerge as the Canadian champion this year, he would be Cana-
da's representative at the world championships in Le Mans, France Nov. 1 to
8.

Fest opens today
DURHAM - Area artists will
be part of a two-week festival of
contemporary visual arts in down-
town Oshawa.
The Durham Art Fest kicks off
tonight, Friday, Sept. 18, from 7
to 9 p.m. with a chain of openings
at five sites. Opening ceremonies
are slated for tonight at the
Michael Starr Building, 33 King
St. W., Oshawa. The festival will
continue until Oct. 3.
Jean-Paul Rehr of Ajax and
Heather Rigby of Claremont are
local artists among 32 artists tak-
ing over vacant office and store
space along King, Centre and
Simcoe Streets in Oshawa.
These contemporary galleries
will house work of artists whose
paintings, sculpture, drawings,
prints and photographs are better
known in Toronto. 'Montreal, Hal-
ifax and New York.
Coincidentally, the Robert
McLaughlin Gallery will open its
re-creation of the important 1953
exhibition Abstracts At Home,

impossible to dig outside the
house, a similar set-up can be
installed indoors. A trench can be
dug around the interior perimeter
of the house, and filled with
weeping tiles and gravel in the
same manner as the outside
system. New concrete is poured
over the trench to refinish the
basement.

residue, a thin skint laver of this
concrete is applied to restore the
exiOnal look of- the object. Cracks
around swimming pools can be
filled, as can chips and pits in
concrete stairs. liven broken,
crumbling concrete can be repaired
by this process.
