Durham Regional Police say an armed man took his common-law wife hostage around 9 p.m. in her basement apartment at 99 Emperor St. The tactical unit and a police negotiator were called. The tactical unit, on a training exercise at Camp Borden near Bame when the incident began, arrived on the scene at 11:05 p.m. and heavily -armed officers began moving Into position at about 11:-10. At 12:09 a.m., a man surrendered without incident. No shots were fired and no one was injured. Superintendent Roy Hobbs said at the scene, "The tactical unit arrived, called in to him and asked him to come outside. After a while, (the man and wornaa) did." The couple had had a fight earlier, accord- ing !c Supt. Hobbs. During the incident, police blocked off Emperor St. between Tumbull Rd. and Tul- loch Dr. Sergeant Sandy Ryne says that, after the man came out of the house without a gun, police had "no problems" arresting him. Cops then searched the house and found a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition. "It's premature to make a final decision on abandoning the option of using courts to challenge this bill;" Durham Board of Education trustee Duncan Read told col- leagues Monday. The Ajax trustee is among those concerned with the provin- cial government's intent to man- date junior kindergarten by September 1994. `'Our mandate is education," Mr. Read said. "There are some who would argue junior kinder- garten is nothing but day care." But Pat Prentice, who's responsible for the early years at the board, pointed to reports that suggest "early education can be beneficial to young children, especially those from disadvan- taged backgrounds" and that "liv- ing is learning" from birth to six years. A legal firm believes the board would fail if it attempted to chal- lenge the government's proposed bill in court. That's because :school boards don't have constitu- tional powers and therefore must Obey federal and provincial legis- lation, Guy Giorno told trustees. Further, Mr. Giorno doubts the Ajax teen mugged AJAX - An Ajax teen was mugged early Sunday morning after complying to three strangers' request for a cigarette. He was walking in the area of Rotherglen Rd. and Sher- wood Rd. around 3 a.m. when three men asked him for a cigarette. When he went to give them one, they knocked him to the ground, kicked him in the face and grabbed some money out of his wallet. He suffered cuts to his face. "Being unreasonable does not constitute a court challenge," he told trustees concerned with implementing a costly program during a recession. (It would cost the board an esti- mated $24 million to establish a full-fledged junior kindergarten program.) If the board refused to imple- ment a legislated program, a par- ent, ratepayer or government could apply for a court order demanding the board to comply, Mr. Giomo said. The government could also withhold some or all of the money the board receives in grants. The Durham public board is among 17 boards across the province which doesn't have a junior kindergarten program in place. Since getting the go-ahead from the ministry of education to examine alternatives, the board has come up with such options as *JsKWL COMING TO Presented by . ka= a Puckering PICMERING J\JII -JJ'J rJRA]] `\ l.I VIRE Three days only! Dump search delayed another two months DURHAM - Residents will have to bite their nails for another two months while waiting for a short list of Durham's candidate dump sites. The provincial Interim Waste Authority, which was to have cut a list of 17 candidate sites down to five or six by the end of this month, has decided it needs more time to do the job. A short list of sites won't be made public until late November, IWA chair Walter Pitman has announced. The delay will give the author- ity more time to review more than 1,000 letters, almost 2,000 tele- phone calls and about 100 briefs submitted by residents, he says. "We want to ensure the site - search teams have adequate time to evaluate all of this information through field verifications and tests, and to incorporate it in the study conclusions," explains IWA general manager Ery McIntyre. But the two-month delay is prolonging the agony of worried residents, says Lloyd Thomas, chairman of Pickering -Ajax Citi- zens' Together (PACT) for the Environment. Seven of Durham's 17 candidate sites are in Picker- ing. "We've cot all these people under stress and strain right now worrying about their farmland," points out Mr. Thomas, mention- ing that he's seen farmers "in tears" at public IWA meetings. "This (delay) will prolong the anxiety; people are going to be suffering that much more." Durham West 11PP Jim Wise- man agrees. Mr. Lopez was reportedly attending a Bible class at the King Street Pente- costal Church in Oshawa when his wife was seen leaving the couple's O'Dell Court home in Ajax on Apr- 10. (Mr. Lopez moved after the murder.) Neighbors reported seeing the woman get into her car with her dog around 10:30 p.m. The dog was found notch of Ajax on the day her body was found. The provincial body was to have cut a list of 17 potential sites down to five or six by the end of this month, but has decided it needs more time to do the job. The short list of sites won't be announced until late November. The decision to delay has come under fire by the Pickering -Ajax Citizens' Together for the Environment (PACT). They're concerned the process is taking too long, keeping people under unnecessary stress and strain. Seven of Durham's 17 candidate sites are in Pick- ering. And while the delay may be stressful to residents, it is neces- sary. The dump site location decision is not one to be taken lightly. According to IWA chair Walter Pitman, the delay is to allow the authority to review the more than 1,000 letters, almost 2,000 tele- phone calls and about 100 briefs submitted by residents. The fact that they're interested in these communications is a positive sign. It's only with all information carefully considered that the IWA can make a proper decision -- one that will benefit most residents in the long run. And, this is where residents concerned about the location of the dump can help out. Let the IWA know your concerns. Express your anxieties and help them make the proper decision. No one wants a dump site in their neighborhood, but the fact is there's one on the way. Don't get caught later saying, "We should have..." Act now. .Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Letters Bookworms pay taxes too To the editor, Branch libraries are closing and planning to close in increas- ing numbers in this area. The solution to the financial problems is so simple, those at management level can't see it. Look up the word "library" in any reliable dictionary. The fol- lowing is the meaning found in the Concise English Dictionary. "A collection of books classified or otherwise organized; a build- ing, room or series of rooms con- taining such a collection; an insti- tution established for the forma - The News Advertiser wel- comes letters to the editor on topical issues, controversial matters and anything else of interest to our readers. Pleas keep litters to a reasonable length of no more than 11/2 typed, double spaced pages. We reserve the right to edit letters for style, length and legal reasons and to withhold ktters deemed not fit for pub- lication. All letters must include your full name, address and phone number for our information. Lion or maintenance of such a col- lection; a series of books similar in subject, literary forms etc." Do you see anything about video games, craft centres, musical concerts, etc? Somewhere along the line, the library board has decided that anything that can be classified as a learning experience belongs in a public library. All the aforementioned are financed at the expense of closing local branches or decreasing the number of hours when some are open. I can't understand why the library budget should be covering any learning experiences except those found in books. Them is an all-time high number of people who can't read, or would rather be spoon fed by TV and videos, but why must those who enjoy reading and borrowing books from the library be deprived of the conve- nience of a branch library near their homes that is open a reason- able number of hours each day of the week, with the exception of Sundays and holidays? Bookworms pay taxes too, and would like more value for their money. Marina Rodgers, Pickering Pell — lr. It 9L Mother's courage moving To the editor, It was with great interest that we read the article "If love is the drug, Bryan may be cured" in your August 30 edition. During this tragic situation we have had the very fortunate experi- ence, if one can use that term under the circumstances, of working with Bryan's mother, Isabel. The threat of losing a child is any parents greatest nightmare and all who have worked with Isabel during this time cannot help but be moved by her courage, her deep love for her family and her unending faith. Bryan's recovery is also a tribute to the love of his brothers, his many friends, and the gentle hands of the many medical professionals who have played a major role in this miracle. Bryan, Philip and Michael should be proud. Their parents have provided an example we can all aspire to. (A review of Blithe Spirit will appear in an upcoming issue of the News Advertiser.) Charley's Aunt is a 100 -year- old British comedy, but it's not a lighthouse plays Purple Onion Saturday By John Duarte Special When Lighthouse plays at the Purple Onion on Saturday, many of the people in the audi- ence won't have been born when the band entrenched itself in Canadian music histo- ry. Lighthouse was formed in 1968 when drummer Skip Prokop had a vision for a rock band featuring horns and strings to augment the guitars and drums. In a six-year span, from 1969 to 1974, Lighthouse was voted Canada's best rock band four times and received the Juno Award on each of those occasions. Songs like Sunny Days, One Fine Morning and Hats Off to the Stranger helped Lighthouse collect nine gold and platinum records. Prokop said putting Light- house together is a huge finan- cial undertaking, and if the group was going to get back together it would have to be with bigger plans than just another one-shot deal as was tri "The reviews of the five or six dates we have done to this point have been astounding," Prokop said. "Most of the reviews we've received figure the band is better now than it ever was. That is because we've matured a lot. No one has got anything to prove. We're just having a great time." Lighthouse plays the Purple Onion in Oshawa Saturday. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door. Herongate I Barn Dinner Theatre Altom Rd., Pickering presents Noel Coward's 11111 ITCH ING COMEDY BLITHE SPIRIT" Opens Sept. 11 Tickets frOM Dinner, Show & $28 95 Taxe IncluLd r rmAFALve For Refs3rUOM Pkm Cd 1 472 -roes lc ?eview museum piece, rather a classic comedy, which the audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy. This production, presented by the Scarborough Theatre Guild, includes a number of very talented people from Pickering. Mike Woodbridge was superb in the demanding role of Lord Fancourt, who is persuaded to impersonate the aunt of his friend Charley. Both for reasons of space and to avoid spoiling the show by telling too much of the plot, I won't try to explain why he does. However, the results are hilarious. Eileen O'Leary was charming and serene as Charley's real aunt, who arrives in the middle of the charade, much to her and the audi- ence's amusement. Larry O'Leary, your regular reviewer in this space, gave a convincing and hilarious performance as the crusty Spettigue. In any review of a play with several characters, it is difficult to discuss all the performances. The players — 10 in all — worked well together and the overall effect was very good. Much credit for this goes to director William Granger. Special mention must be made of an excellent performance by Jim Renshaw in the role of the long-suffering servant Brasset. As in most plays, there were many backstage workers, who are as important to the success of the show as the actors. Important backstage contributions included costumes by Jacqueline McKee and properties by Angela Al- Hillal, also of Pickering. The play is very entertaining. 1 highly recommend it. It's being staged Thursday, Fri- day and Saturday nights until Sept. 26 at Scarborough Village Theatre at the corner of Kingston box office at 396-4049 for tickets Rd. and Markham Rd. At the provincial championship in Waterloo on the Labor Dav weekend, the Spartans were beaten 7-1 by Thornhill. They were hurt by errors and a lack of offence. Equally disappointing to the Ajax midgets was the fact they had mercied Thornhill in an earlier pre- liminary -round contest. Spartans' pitchers, who got the only Ajax hits in the game, got the offence started too late. Andrew Kolbin stroked a triple to bring home 'alike McKenzie in the sev- enth inning with Ajax's only run of the game. Defensivelv, Kolbin combined with fust baseman Ryan Lowe for a fine double play on the fust play of the game. Lowe also scooped up several wildly -thrown balls at first base, while Junior Brown snagged two deep fly balls in centre field. The Ajacians started the provin- cials with a bang, mercying Chatham 10-0. McKenzie allowed two hits and had four strikeouts. Kolbin went three -for -four at the plate with three singles for three: RBIs. Casey Chuaniuk smashed a double and a single, Jay Rodriguez's triple brought in two RBIs, Shawn Barnes's double earned him an RBI and Scott Smith poked two singles and a sacrifice fly for an RBI. Ajax merzied Thornhill 11-1 in the second game. The bats were hot with McKenzie's double and single cashing in three RBIs. Kolbin col- lected two RBIs on a double and Lowe earned two RBIs on a deep sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice. Greg Bailey smacked a double and Smith and Brown stroked a pair of singles each. The defence was led by Brown who gloved a hard-hit ball in the third inning in centre field and Bai- ley who lunged to snag a deep fly ball to left field. Kolbin tossed for five innings allowing four hits and six walks and fanning three Thornhill batters. McKenzie closed in the sixth and recorded a strikeout. Ajax battled Waterloo to a 2-1 win in the third game. The only runs for Ajax came in the third inning when Gord Henderson >troked a single and later scored on . owe's single. Sudbury's Pierre Beaudreau in one of the fights on a box- ing card which featured Cuban junior fighters. The Cubans will fight a team of Ontario all-stars again Saturday night at the Annandale Golf and Curling Club. photo by Andrew !wanowski Cuban fighters conquer,, but Ontario boxers battle gamely AJAX - The Cubans conquered at the boxing card in Ajax Sunday afternoon, but Ontario fighters fared better than expected. The 10 -bout card featured the Cuban junior national boxing team — currently on a two-week training camp in Ajax and Oshawa — against a group of Ontario all-star boxers who came from as far away as Ottawa and Thunder Bay. The Cubans won all their bouts by unanimous decisions at the card at the Annandale Golf and Country Club in Ajax. However, Ajax Boxing Club coach Don Ross says the Ontario fighters were full value in the ring, and a few almost pulled upsets. "I was quite happy with the way th.- Ontario fight- ers fought," says Ross. "They fought with their hearts. They didn't have the technical skills that the Cubans have." Ross pointed out Bob Gnay of London fought three close rowx1s with Esteban Fuentes in a 88 -kilo- gram weight class bout Scarborough's Joe Lim also put up a valiant display against Oirstes Qwjano in a 69 -kg. bout, with Lim appearing to be winning the fust two rounds, but the Cuban's superb conditioning showed through in the third and final round. The only Ajax Boxing Club fighter to see action in the card was Doug Fisher who fought Sudbury's Pierre Beaudreau in a 60 -kg. bout. Fisher won by a second -round disqualification. The Ontario all-stars will square off again against the Cuban team at Annandale Golf and Country Club on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. Two Ajax fighters, Doug Fisher and Troy Talbot, will see action against Cuban opponents in Satur- day's card. Doug Fisher will fight a lightweight (69 kg,) bout against Orestes Quijano, touted as the 'young Mike Tyson' by his fellow Cuban boxers. _ Meanwhile, Troy Talbot will climb into the ring against Noel Perez in a light heavyweight (84 kg.) encounter. Both Talbot and Fisher are in training and are expected to compete at the Canadian Amatew Box- ing Championships in Winnipeg on Jan. 7. Following the two-week training camp in Ajax, the Cubans will depart for Montreal to take part in the World Junior Boxing Championship in Montreal. Tickets for the two exhibition boxing cards are $10 each and will be available at the door. The Annandale Golf and Country Club is at the comer of Bayly St and Church SL in Ajax.
