The 14 -week-old pup, hit by a car last Saturday, was the sub- ject of a fund-raising drive organized by neighborhood children earlier this week. More than a dozen children helped raise S235 for veterinary bills on behalf of the Donaldson family of Fieldlight Blvd., who are giving up their home due to financial problems. The dog, suffering from a fractured shoul- der, is in a sling but won't need surgery. A Toronto radio station is paying the remainder of the current $546 vet bill, but Pam Donald- son estimates another $250 will be needed for follow-up care. Any extra donations will be given to the Ontario Humane Society, she says. Several people have pledged hundreds of dollars and two com- panies are taking up collections among employees, she says. Her daughter, eight-year-old Shauna Scott, is thrilled to have Nikita back. "It's great," she says. "When I saw her at the vet's she was very sad. Now she's happy to be home." "They have no business being in a hobby," says Craig Ware, owner of Grand Slammm in Ajax. He first opposed the cards after hearing photos of missing children were inserted in one series. "Parents are grieving for the loss of their kids. No way would I support (the cards)." The cards are particularly offensive to Don Sullivan of Ajax, whose daughter was mur- dered in 1980. "If someone ever did that with a picture of our daughter's murderer I'd proba- bly go to the manufacturer and burn the building down," says Ontario Rid- ing's Reform Party candi- date. Mr. Sulli- van, who co- founded Vic- tims Against Violence with his wife Pat, says the stress endured by parents of a m u r d e r e d child lasts for many years. "What are (parents) going to do when they see these killers of their children glorified" while some- one makes a financial gain, he asks. I don't like censoring people but I don't need to put that in children's hands," says an employee who asked not to be identified. "If every store carried them, no one would want them," he predicts. But not all retailers agree. "I find nothing offensive about them," admits Jan Truppe, owner of GNU Books in Ajax. "I sell more true crime books than anything else. They con- tain more details as well as pic- tures," while the cards feature paintings of the criminals. While Ms. Truppe is "neither for or against" the cards, "all kinds of people" are interested them, and she quickly sold the six boxes she bought. "I could have sold two cases (of them) faster than two cases of baseball cards," she says. (A box contains 36 packs and a case contains 40 boxes. GNU Books sold a package of 10 for about S 1.50.) Ms. Truppe says a new series of cards, featuring paintings of such trials as Charles Manson and Patty Hearst in which cam- eras were banned, will be released in November. The series, Crime and Punishment, will feature l 10 cards. Another retailer, Got It Need It Sportscards and Memorabilia in Pickering, says it's difficult to get the cards. "We don't sell them, but we would if we could get them. People definitely want them," says manager Sherie Selim. A Toronto company which distributes to GNU Books says the demand for the cards "is not that big compared to other cards. This has been trumpeted as a major innovation, but how it varies from the current Pre -Standard situation, where teachers determine whether the state of their students' learning is adequate, is hard to see. In fact, there has been no change: a sop has been thrown to parents who were raised in the age of grades and pass or fail, and who want some objec- tive measure of how their ch&ken are progressing. The Ministry of Education is caught between competing influences. Par- ents, appalled by the illiteracy rate, by the recent poor results of Ontario chil- dren in international competitions and by the soaring cost of a system they perceive as failing, are pushing for standard tests. They want to know exactly how their children, and their children's school, stack up against a known stan- dard. Teachers, who feel under attack, resist such standards. They fear that they will be used to grade teachers, not students. But why shouldn't parents know that some teachers, whom they pay, are consistently turning out bad, or supe- rior, students? They fear that set standards will introduce a competitive atmo- sphere. But then so does basketball (not banned in schools), and life outside of school has its competitive quote of aspects, as teachers may have noticed in their job interviews. They fear that some students, especially immigrants, will be disadvantaged by applying rigid standards to education. Perso ement To the editor, e News Advertiser's August 21 edito- T al entitled "Catholics and Mrs. Smith" truck me as an articulate and reason- able commentary on the Durham Separate School Board's decision not to renew the con- tract of Mrs. Donna Smith, an excellent but nonetheless non-Catholic teacher. It is precisely because your editorial sounds so rational, how- ever, that I feel so strongly obliged to respond to iL You make three statements with which 1 find fault (1) that in deciding what to do with Mrs. Smith (and other teachers like her) the Separate sdxx)l board's primary emphasis should be the quality of the education provided and not the Catholicity of it; (2) that a sympathetic teacher of another denomination is capable of instilling Catholic values in his/her students; and (3) that the will of the parents/ratepayers should prevail in determining board policy. Your initial comment reveals an incomplete umdestath_— of what Catholic education is. The uniquenhess of Catholic education is not some- thing super -imposed on the curriculum but, rather, something intrinsic to it That is to say, a Catholic school is not Catholic because of its "religion classes" so much as because of its vision of itself as a vehicle in and through which its students develop their intellectual and physi- cal potential as they nurture intimate and mean- ingf it relationships with the Trinity. In other words, quality Catholic education is opment is plaorl: olic approa about excellence in academics, but it's not just about that. It's most importantly about personal faith devekVrnenL The school in a Catholic sys- tem is not just an academic building, but a Chris- tian community. The child in a Catholic school is not merely a pupil but a brotber/sister in Christ, a fellow journeyman on the pilgrimage toward Christ. The quality of Catholic education is found in its "Catholic" approach to this reality. So "quality" and "Catholicity" aro inseparable notions. Without a complete understanding of what Catholic education is all about, you are also unaware of ways in which non-Catholic teaches may fall short in such a system. ertainly a sympathetic teacher of another denomination may be capable of instilling Christian values and, arguably, even "Catholic" beliefs. But in an allnospkm in which we as a system are trying to emphasize the hoilistic impure of ed=t M it is fundamental that our teacbers be able to be wholly active in the liturgical and sacramental life within their school communities, especially at the elementary level, and only a Catholic teacher could fulfill this noquirement given the church's policy on access to the sacraments. If the board is to be criticized, it is for com- promising this principle in the first place by allowing a non-Catholic teacher to teach in the system. Its only defence can be that no Catholic teacher was able to do the job at that time. Finally, you misunderstand how it is that cer- tain policies of a Separate school board, like this educa one regarding non-Catholic teachers, must stand firm despite the ratepayers' desires. Any board of education has an obligation to be sensitive to community wants and needs when determining policy. But the nature of Catholic education is such that its boards are not merely administrative organizations but in a cer- tain way extensions of church ministry. Consequently guidelines that the boards establish are not always mere policy. Sometimes they arae, as in the arras of busing and budgeting. for example. But sometimes they are part of er moral notions in which cam must (a larg- er they in accordance with church teaching and/or (b) uphold the distinctness of Catholic education. The former is answerable to parental will, the latter is not Should Catholic ratepayers decide, for example, that Catholic schools be obliged to "update" themselves by t+eaclhing abortion as a viable response to unwant- ed pregnancy, the board could not give in to pub- lic desires because to do so could, as have shown, weaken the structure of hopefully I olic education. The only way in which a parent could exacta k0w tight in dupe ['matte's would be to withdraw hisdher child from the system. These are hard principles and as a Catholic teagdher married to a non-Catholic teacher I am particularly sensitive to the seeming injustice done caring Christian teachers denied employ- ment by Catholic boards of education. The ninth month of the year is traditionally a sports junkie's favorite time of year. Baseball's stretch drive is on (with the Blue Jays holding on to first place), the NFL has started its season, the CFL is winding its season up, and hockey is just around the corner. What to watch? Armchair coaches from all walks of life are sure to be getting in shape for some fast and furious chan- nel switching. Timing, as in most sports, is crucial. You've got to get from one game to another without missing a crucial play -- the game winning home run or 80 - yard touchdown, after all, takes only seconds to complete. Rookie coaches often have to wait until that night's sports coverage to see the big play. For sports widows, or wid- owers, it's a good time of year to get a hobby. Your spouse has a very busy schedule. Well, got to go, just a few hours until game time... Just a reminder... (at Woodbine) MARKHAM Ajax council c 1 frozen AJAX - Councillors, aren't getting a pay increase this year and they won't get much of a raise in the near future. Ajax council voted Tuesday to continue with a pay freeze this year, mean- ing the mayor will make $43,289 from town taxpayers and councillors will earn $17,315. Mayor Jim Witty and regional councillors Roger Anderson and Susan Dulny also receive money from Durham region. Council also changed a bylaw used to determine the politicians' salaries. Prior to this year, the mayor's salary was 50 per cent of what the chief administrative officer made, while the councillors' pay represented 20 per cent of the earnings of the CAO, who got a raise earlier this year. The bylaw approved will reduce the mayor's remuneration to 47.61 per cent of the CAO's salary, and the councillors' rate to 19.04 per cent of the GAO's wage. All councillors received a four -per cent salary increase on Jan. 1 of this year and were to receive another one per cent on April 1. On Jan. 20, councillors voted to roll back their wages to 1991 1eveLs until the town's budget had been ruralized. That was done April 20. Ward 3 councillor Steve Parish agreed with the wage freeze Tuesday, but said he didn't like having councillors' salaries tied to the CAD's. Mr. Witty called the system "an excellent way of doing it. It's my hope that council, by the end of this term of council, will sec fit to reinstating the same percentages. I think it's the right way to proceed." One-third of a councillor's salary is tax free. About S330,000 of the S1,050,000 goal has already been raised, it was revealed at a cam- paign volunteers' kick-off Wednesday night at Gallantry's Restaurant in the Pick- ering Town Centre where about 100 volunteers and rep- resentatives from organizations receiving money from the Unit- ed Way attended. The campaign runs to Wednesday, Dec. 9. The money raised so far includes contributions of about S 1 10,000 from the towns of Ajax and Pickering, and S215,000 from Area Wide, a consortium of the United Ways of Ajax -Pickering, Oakville, Peel region, York region and Metro Toronto. The United Way raises money for 27 social services agencies, including the Big Sis- ters, Big Brothers, the Head Injury Association of Durham Region, Meals -On -Wheels, the Canadian Mental Health Associ- ation of Durham Region, APPLE House for abused women and children, and the Distress Centre of Durham Region. LaBelle expects Bruce Beachner and Drew Campbell to form the goal- tending tandem this season. They will play teams from Orillia, Barrie, Collingwood, Newmarket, Lind- say, Peterborough, Markbam, and the Cobourg Cougars who jumped from junior 'C' this sea- son. Ajax began its exhibition sea- son in earnest with a home -and - home series with the Cobourg Cougars. Ajax defeated Cobourg 3-1 in Cobourg last Thursday and, on Tuesday night, tied Cobourg 3-3 at the Ajax Commu- nity Centre. The first challenge was against Markham who played an extraordinarily tight game against Pickering. With the game tied 7-7 in the seventh inning, Pick- ering's Kelly Honsberger smashed a three - run homer to propel the softball reps to a 10-7 victo- ry- Pickering faced league rivals Stouffville in the second -round contest. Pickering had an easy time of it, doubling Stouffville 12-6 thanks to some great hitting by Jelinda Hough. Advancing to the final unde- feated, Pickering was again forced to face Stouffville who had made their way out of the loser's bracket. Pickering took an early 1-1 lead, but Stouffville came back to tie it. The tie stood up through seven regulation innings forcing an extra frame. In the extra inning, a Stouf- fville base runner stole home to give them the victory. As this was Pickering's first loss in the double -knockout event, another game was played to decide the championship immediately following the first game. The teams traded runs in the first inning, with Stouffville scoring to take a 2-1 lead after the second inning. Although Pickering had many good scor- ing chances, they were unable to cash in base runners. Stouffville prevailed 2-1 to take the gold medal.
