DURHAM - It's the first day of school for
Johnny and you watch from the doorstep with
tears in your eyes as he makes his way down
the driveway.
Starting school is a big event and some-
times it can be a little scary for such a little
kid.

PICKERING - A Pickering company has signed
what it hopes will be a lucrative contract to export
therapeutic air mattresses to Europe.
Haug Industries expects to _
make "a couple of million" dol-
lars shipping the mattresses to a
European distributor, Meddi-Mau
(Ireland) Ltd., says Karl Haug Sr.
The Dillingham Rd. company was
invited to sign a contract after a
Meddi-Matt executive slept on
one of his mattresses, he says.
"'R>e economy has been down;
now this has come up so I'm Karl Haug Sr.
pushing hard," says Mr. Haug,
who expects the fust shipment of 100 mattresses to go
"anytime". The contract is valid for a minimum of
throe years and "if all goes well", it could create jobs
for four or five people, he says.

it crossed Bayly St. at Church St. during busy morning traffic
recently. After running over top of the reptile, believing it was
a rock, Ajax resident Danny McConnell nicknamed the rep-
tile "Lucky" and set it free in Lake Ontario.

Attacking fox was rabid
41PICKERING - A fox that attacked a woman in Pickering a week-and-a-
6ago has tested positive for rabies.
The fox was shot by police Aug. 25 at Beach Point Promenade and West
Shore Boulevard, after it bit a 19 -year-old woman's shoe when she
approached the animal. The bite
fortunately didn't penetrate to her
skin.

Agency aims to help poor kids
DURHAM - A local agency wants to work with
community groups to help children who have prob-
lems related to poverty.
Diane Garvin of the Children's Services Council of
Durham Region says one in five youngsters is at
greater risk of poor health and nutrition, mental health
problems, disability and injury, or abuse and neglect.
"Living in poverty is the main reason children are
at risk," says Ms Garvin, prevention development
manager.
The federal government announced in May it
would provide S200 million over five years to com-
munity groups across the country for the delivery of
health and social programs to high-risk children up to
six years of age, and their parents, and to pregnant
women and nursing mothers.
Ms Garvin is calling on community groups who
are interested in working to plan a Brighter Futures
project in Durham.
The new group that forms will develop a proposal
to send to the government.
The goal of the Children's Services Council is to
improve services for kids with special needs and their
families. The agency, which has more than 60 mem-
ber agencies, is funded by the ministry of community
and social services.

Mattress maker puts Europe to bed

The vinyl, air-filled mattresses are called "air blad-
ders" and are inserted into a zippered mattress cover,
which Haug Industries also makes. "When people
sleep on this mattress, they don't want to sleep on
anything else," Mr. Haug asserts.
He says Meddi-Mau has agreed to take a minimum
of 100 mattresses during each of the first three
months of the contract and a minimum of 250 each
month thereafter.
As well as air beds and mattresses, Haug Indus-
tries manufactures pool liners, accessories and kits,
and other speciality vinyl products.

TEAR GAS SEIZED FROM MOTORIST
PICKERING - A can of "Paralyzer" tear gas was found in the glove
compartment of a car stopped by a police radar unit Monday night.
Durham Regional Police say the car was ordered stopped on Dixie
Rd. south of the third concession after officers noticed its occupants had
a can of beer.
Police say they found an open case of beer in the vehicle as well as
tear gas, and a passenger in the car initially gave a false name when
questioned.
A 21 -year-old woman of no fixed address is charged with posses_
sion of a prohibited weapon and obstructing police.
DIAPER SERVICE HIT BY BURGLARS
AJAX - Several businesses were broken into Thursday night at an
industrial complex here.
Durham Regional Police say Nappy Days Diaper Service and the
Weed Man were arnong the companies robbed of petty cash at 369 Fin-
ley Ave.
The burglars entered the businesses by spinning the door locks,
police say.
MARCH OF DIMES DRIVE NEEDS HELP
DURHAM - The Ontario March of Dimes needs help with its
upcoming campaign in Durham region.
Volunteers are needed for door-to-door canvassing, special events

Visits to the park, to a vari-
ety of stores, zoos, a creek or
lake, and the public library are
learning experiences for the
children, says Mrs. Prentice.
Co-operative habits taught at
home can make interacting
with other saxlents at school a
lot easier. Parents should
encourage children to put
durtgs away, to listen and to fol-
low instruction, and b play co-
qwatively.
Give your child some
responsibility with simple
chores and develop a routine
for morning, bedtime and
meals, she says.

Helping your children
walk to school safely
DURHAM - Pamms can help reduce the danger their children
face getting to and from school by helping them select the safest
route available.
The plan calls for parents to map out a route and explain to their
children why it was selected. The Canadian Automobile Associa-
tion suggests you teach your children to:
• Choose the route with the fewest streets to cross.
• Go directly to and from school — don't fool around.
• Cross only at comers and cooperate with the school safety
patrol, crossing guards or other supervisors.
• Look all ways before crossing.
• Obey traffic lights and signals.
• Watch for turning cars.
• Walk Allow yourself plenty of time and don't run across the
street.
• Never step into the street from between parked cars.
• Face traffic when walking on roads without sidewalks.

With the Labor Day weekend,
the music filling the Pickering
Town Centre will be silenced.
The buskers program, run
throughout the summer at the
Pickering gypping centre, comes
to an end. But there will be no sad
faces. Everyone involved, from
the performers to mall
management, are glowing in the
success of the summer evemt
"It was simply fabulous," says
Pickering Town Centre's Barb
Brown. "'The energy supplied by
the performers was tremendous.

Buskers are roving entertainers
adept in singing, telling stories,
magic, juggling and varied other
forms of amusement The art of
busking dates back to old
England, when performers
travelled from town to town
entertaining local people. The
performers, in turn, collect
donations from appreciative
audiences. -
Performers at the Pickering
Town Centre this year included
several singer/guitarists, a
classical guitarist, a saxophonist,
a magician/juggler and an a
capella quartet. Some had busked
before, others were just enjoying
their first experience with the
performance farm.
"It has been really exciting,"
said sax player Jason Arcega.
"The money is really good and
you get to meet a lot of people
and talk to them. I've played
professionally and busking
definitely more fin."
Many performers found busking
to be helpful in honing their art,
especially when it comes to
catching the audience's attention.
"It is very different from the
concert aspect of performing,"
said Cameron Dolan, of the a
capella group Free Time. "It
(busking) really makes
performing more difficult because
people are walking by, they are
not there to listen to you sing."
Classical guitarist Mariette
Seide said she was extremely
pleased when she found out she
had berm granted a licence to
busk at the Pickering Town
Centre. She explained busking
jobs are hard to come by, but
welcomed by performers.
"I took it because it would give
more experience in performing,"
Seide added. "When busking, you
have to work on the performance.
You have to draw people's
attention and hold them."
Performers like singer Latoya
Lesmond said getting a licence
came as a big surprise.
"I always look through the
newspaper for auditions," she
said, "but I was surprised when I
got it. I want to make singing my
career and this will give me good
experience.
Brown introduced busking to
the merchants and shoppers of the
Pickering Town Centre for the
fust time this year, but guarantees
this is not a one-time event.
"The merchants are all quite
excited. They had never been
exposed to this type of
entertainment in a mall before,"
she said. "We plan to offer this
type of entertainment, not only
during the summer time but also
during special occasions like our
anniversary and at Christmas."

Breaking up
not so hard to do
With the opening last week of three Durham meeting places for split-up
families, the province has made a move toward bridging the gap that too often
separates parents from their non-custodial children.
In one of its wiser moves since being elected to power, the Ontario NDP
government announced earlier this year that Durham would get $75,000 to
open three supervised access centres for visits between children from broken
homes and their parents. (Tire centre serving Ajax and Pickering is at the Y
Pace Centre in Pickering.)
Such facilities have been needed for a long time. In fact, as soon as Attor-
ney General Howard Hampton announced funding for the centres, officials
were swamped with calls from the public, reports Duat><an Supervised Access
Program director Ted Raby.
That confirmed the need for the program and more or less verified Mr.
Hampton's claim that thousands of children now meet their non-custodial par-
ents in restaurants, bowling alleys, lawyers' offices and police stations. Hardly
places that foster open and intimate conversation between members of split-up
families, conversations that are needed if estranged family members are to re-
open the lines of communication and mend the fences that too often go up

Many animal shelters and
pounds in Ontario are full of
adoptable dogs and cats. And
while the summer months often
see an increase in the number of
animals available for adoption,
this summer appears to be worse
than usual. The unusually large
number of animals needing homes
means that many of them will

one of supply and demand. The

is far greater than the demand
from responsible people who are

This letter is written on behalf of my seven-year-old son, Kyle.
To the person who stole his bike: we want to let you know that you
are a selfish, stupid, incAnsiderate and thoughtless person. You must
have real nerve to approach a garage and carry away a bike when the
chain was broken. My son was very upset. 'Ibis bike was a birthday
present from the whole family and we will probably not replace it this
year. Now we are going to miss out on all the bike rides and enjoy -
mart we get from cycling as a family. We tape you feel like a creep,
because you are one.
A note to everyone who owns a bike: keep your garages locked and
bikes inside when you're not riding them so this wont happen to you.

PICKERING - A baking con-
test will highlight Pickering
Museum Village's upcoming Fall
Country Fair, the last special
event of its season.
The fair will be held Sunday,
Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
offering enjoyment for every
member of the family.
Prizes will be awarded for the
best apple pie, oatmeal cookies,
strawberry jam, chili sauce, basket
of plenty and garden bouquet.
Children under 14 can compete in
the Best Chocolate Chip Cookie
Contest. Entry forms are available
at Pickering branch libraries, the
Pickering Recreation Complex
and the Pickering Civic Complex.
Fair -goers can stroll through a
craft market, where more than 35
vendors will offer gift ideas such
as hand-crafted pottery, stained
glass, needlework, soft -sculptured
dolls and animals, wooden toys,
braided rugs, gift baskets,
wreaths, tatted snowflakes, paint-
ings, primitive folk art, hand-
crafted jewelry and Christmas
ornaments. There'll be baked
goods and preserves, too.
Activities will include candle
:making and clock making, while a
circuit minister will conduct three
services during the afternoon.
Admission is $4 for adults,
$2.50 for seniors and students, $2
for children five to 12 or $12 for a
family of two adults with children
under 18.
Persian Gulf
destruction
meeting topic
DURHAM - An environ-
mental journalist who wit-
nessed the destruction caused
by fires set during the Persian
Gulf War will share his experi-
ences at an upcoming meeting.
Randy Thomas will also
show his 25 -minute video Eco -
War, which recently won top
honors at the Environmental
Film Festival in the United
States. The film depicts the
damage inflicted in the Gulf by
175 million barrels of spilt oil
and fires that burned for 200
days.
Mr. Thomas will explain
why he believes the facts on
human and environmental
destruction there have been
rept from the public.
The event, sponsored by the
Durham Environmental Net-
work, will be held Thursday,
Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at

Pickering Recreation Complex
Sunday, Sept. 27.
Hosted by the Durham Avi-
cultural Society, the show will
allow the public to view birds
of all kinds from 10 a.m. to 4
P•m-
Admission is $2, or $1 for
senior citizens and children
under 12 years of age. The
recreation complex is at 1867

can improve quality
of life with program
AJAX-PICKERING - Improv-
ing the quality of life for asthmat-
ics of all ages is the aim of an out-
reach
utreach program being offered
again this year.
The Lung Association of
Durham Region will continue its
out -reach program, designed as a
drop-in centre, at the Ajax and
Pidwring General Hospital.
The free service, funded by a
grant from Glaxco Canada Inc.,
also aims to reduce hospital
admissions. Early detection and
proper treatment are the major
factors in determining the out-
come of asthma, according to the
,association.
Through education and by
encouraging compliance with pre-
scribed medical therapies, the out-
reach program promotes a more
normal lifestyle for asthma suffer-
ers.
Respiratory therapists will
review different aspects of asthma
and its treatment and there will be
hands-on assistance on the use of
inhalers, peak flow meters and
other breathing devices.
The program, held Wednes-
days at 6:30 p.m., begins Sept. 16
and runs until Dec. 2. It will begin
again Feb. 3.

Agency 'makes it our business to know'
about a myriad of needed services
DURHAM - An agency dedicated solely
to special needs children "makes it our
business to know" about a myriad of ser-
vices, from drooling clinics to youth proba-
tion and child welfare.
.'We provide information on needs that
are difficult to meet," says Joan Higginson,
executive director of the Children's Ser-
vices Council of Durham, a resource for
parents and agencies unable to access need-
ed services.
..A resource teacher (for instance) could
never know about all the services out there.
We make it our business to know."
Of Durham's 110,000 children, Mrs.
Higginson estimates 20 per cent have spe-
cial needs or are "at risk."
(A child with special needs has demands
beyond those of a normally developing
child in one or more areas of development,
including physical, medical or sensory;
intellectual or learning; communication;
and social, emotional or behavioral.
An at -risk child is one who may need
specialized programs or services to ensure
his adequate health, competence or safety
because of such external or internal family
stresses as poverty or chronic illness of a
parent.)
Most of those children "will never know
the council exists" because inquiries are
often made by social workers and resource
teachers.
Established in January 1991, the council
is an umbrella for 56 social services agen-
cies covering a wide range of needs,
including health, mental health, rehabilita-
tion, child welfare, child development, edu-
cation, young offender and family services.
The founding members, which included
the Children's Aid Society, Durham Hoose
Child and Family Centre, Grandview Reha-
bilitation and Treatment Centre, and the
Family Court Clinic, wanted to "coordinate
their overall efforts," says Mrs. Higginson.
In the event of a service dispute between
agencies, the council acts as a mediator. "If
more than one agency is involved in pro-
viding services to a child, they may come
to an impasse," explains Mrs. Higginson.
"Different service sectors have different
perspectives on issues. A mediator may
help them work toward the same goals."
A formal case resolution process has
been developed by the council to ensure
the needs of hard -to -serve children and
their families are met. If treatment has
failed or appropriate services aren't avail-
able, the council will explore new options
and, if necessary, negotiate with agencies.
Parents are encouraged to participate.
The council can simplify the application
process for residential services by asking
applicants to fill out just one form which
would be forwarded to the appropriate
agencies.
It also encourages agencies to base their
planning on "facts rather than perceptions"
and has established an information system
which analyses the use of services by
clients.
"It gives a picture of how adequate the
service system is," Mrs. Higginson notes.
"It tells how many children are receiving
services and how old they are. It may show
that some services aren't being used in a
particular area, such as Brock."
At a time when there's "uncertainty and
anxiety" among social services agencies,
the council encourages its members to plan
together.
"If one agency decreases services,
everyone else knows about it and plans for
it," says Mrs. Higginson. "Hopefully there
are no gaping holes."

doing business (but) when there are huge
cutbacks, it's inevitable that it will mean a
reduction in services."
The council, which recently completed
a two-week program for eight- to 18 -year -

Helping your children learn how to

and the Durham Regional Police
are asking for the public's help in
solving a robbery in Oshawa Fri -
Heritage
languages
are taught
DURHAM - Italian, Croatian,
Portugese and Spanish are just
some of the heritage language
•courses being offered here at no
charge to elementary school stu-
dents.
A heritage language is any lan-
guage other than the two official
languages of Canada.
The Durham Region Roman
Catholic Separate School Board is
offering classes Saturdays from
9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. beginning
Sept 19. The program, made up of
30 classes, ends June 5, 1993.
St. Bernadette Catholic School
in Ajax will offer Italian, Filipino,
Polish, Portugese and Spanish. SL
Isaac Jogues Catholic School in
Pickering is home to Italian, Fil-
ipino and Spanish-
Dutch
panishDutch and Polish will be offered
at SL Hedwig's in Oshawa, and
Croatian, Italian, Filipino, Por-
tugese and Spanish at St Christo-
pher's, also in Oshawa
To register, call the separate

The Durham Board of Educa-
tion is also offering a variety of her-
itage language courses. Classes
begin in mid-September and are

male entered the
V Plus Gas Bar at
925 Simcoe SL N.
and asked the
clerk about pur-
chasing cartons of
cigarettes. Just as
the clerk started
to answer, the
suspect opened
his jean jacket
and exposed the butt of a handgun
that was tucked in his pants.
The suspect then moved towards
the till and asked the victim to open
the cash register. Cash was removed
and the bandit also stole three car-
tons of Players and one carton of
Export A before leaving the gas sta-
tion.
The gunman walked eastbound
on the south side of Robert St. and
then turned south on Masson St.
He's described as white, 5'10",
160 pounds, scruffy, with wavy
brown medium -length hair that was
uncut and pushed back. He was
wearing a black ball hat with a patch
