"1 couldn't describe the scene when I found out he wanted to find me," Leticia Etherington of Pickering recalls. "I sunk down on my knees and bawled. It seemed too strange to be true that after so many years he'd get in touch with me out of the blue. It seemed too easy." In April 1980, nine -month-old Nicholas was allegedly taken to Cyprus by his father, just weeks after his parents separated. His father was arrested in England on a stopover, but was released imd left the country before Leticia arrived th, re tol: ,w•ir an overnight flight. "I missed them by an hour -and -a -half," Leticia recalls. "I new back to Canada the same day, hysterical and jetlagged." Because there are no extradition arrangements between Canada and Cyprus, Leticia dealt with the Canadian embassy in Tel Aviv, which is recognized by Cyprus. After hiring lawyers in Cyprus and Canada, Leticia learned the "best scenario" she could expect was supervised access to her son in Cyprus. Her search for Nicholas "slowed down" five years ago after she lost track of his father. It resumed in December when she got in touch with Child Find and International Social Services. But it was Nicholas who eventually found his moth- er through an aunt in Scarborough. His Mother's Day call ended years of wondering "if he was cold, if he was lonely, if he was even alive," Leticia says. "He looks really good," Sharon reports. "His complexion is so clear and bright. He's calmed down and is more relaxed, and has a lot of good energy." Sharon is impressed with the drug FK 506, which is in its fifth year of study by doctors at Pitts- burgh Children's Hospital. "At the transplant clinic in Toronto, you can tell which kids have had a transplant," she notes. "In Pittsburgh, I couldn't tell which ones had a transplant and which were brothers and sisters waiting for someone. It was just amarine. I saw lots of kids doing well on the drug." If all goes according to plan, Benjamin will return to Pittsburgh in November. Until then, he will continue taking the drug twice a day and blood samples taken twice a week will be sent to Pitts- burgh for testing. Because Ontario's health plan refused to pay for Benjamin's experimental treatment, Sharon and Steve went public with their plight to raise enough money to cover out -of -country hospital expenses. THE NEM ADVERTNER, WED, AUGUST 26, lflLPAGE S-A P Audit requested of Pickerin election expenses By JUDII BOBSITT Staff Reporter PICKERING - Three Pickering election candidates might be asked to show receipts for expenses declared in the Nov. 12 munici- pal election. A town audit on the expenses of Maurice Brenner, Doug Dickerson and Rick Johnson has been formally requested by resident Alex Robertson, himself a former Pickering politi- cian. His request will come before council for consideration. Mr. Robertson is questioning expenses that include Mr. Dickerson's $7,000 victory party, a $3,000 catering tab recorded by Mr. John- son and Mr. Brenner's bills of $2,900 for tele- phones and brochures. After expenses were deducted from campaign donations, candi- dates were required by law to hand over any surplus funds to the town. Chartered accountants hired by the candi- dates have already performed individual audits on the election statements. Of the three candidates, only Mr. Dicker- son was unsuccessful in his bid for re-election to Pickering council; he declared he spent more than 516,000 in his attempt at office. Mr. Brenner, Ward 1 regional councillor, Make justice system a `higher priority': Reform candidate AJAX PICKERING Lawyer Bill Foden wants to run for the Reform Party in the next federal election. The five-ve<r Pickering resident is seekln.: the nom- ination as Ontario Riding's Reform Party candidate, saying he's "irresistibly attracted to this party because it commits parliament to living within its means (and) requires elected members to represent the views of the riding to parliament" Mr. Foden believes the government "should entrench your right of property ownership in the consti- e_iunn. He's also calling for amendments to criminal and parole legislation, believing "it's time to make our justice system a higher priority." Mr. Foden describes himself as a "devoted family man with high moral values" and says he's "com- mitted to making the changes to the parliamentary system that will enable the people to be heard again" A Reform Party member since January, '.vlr. Foden attended the University of Western Ontario, the University of Toronto, and graduat- Cd from the Osgoode Hall Law hool in 1982. He's a past member of the Liver- pool West Community Association, the Community Legal Aid Services program, and a former director of a community Legal Aid clinic. Mr. Foden is presently self- employed in the general practice of law. The party's 820 -plus member- ship will choose a candidate for the next federal election Sept. 9. Others who've so far indicated an interest in running for the Reform Party are Don Sullivan of Ajax and Whitby's Andrew Davies. College courses for adults Bill Foden says he spent more than $19,000 (including $7,000 on a court-ordered recount) while Mr. Johnson reported the Ward 3 regional seat cost him $20,000. "1 can't ever remember so much money being spent on elections," says Mr. Robert- son, who wrote to the town complaining that some declared expenses "appear to be exces- sive." Mr. Brenner says he's got "nothing to hide ... I welcome anything that will confirm everything is above board...no problem." Mr. Brenner adds he may be required to declare a conflict of interest if the request comes to council for a vote. Mr. Johnson says an audit is "fine" with him. "We've done everything by the book." Mr. Dickerson could not be reached for comment. Town manager Noel Marshall says that, if an audit is granted by council, he expects detailed receipts would be required of the three men. If council denies an audit, Mr. Robertson can take his request to the province, says Mr. Marshall. In an earlier interview, town clerk Bruce Taylor said the audit request will likely come before council in September. BWO THF. IM o sou for Durham Our local school boards are offering heritage language courses in Ital- ian, Dutch, Ukrainian and Polish -- the languages of many of the people who emigrated from their native lands in the last century to come live in Ajax and Pickering. But the boards are also offering Filipino, Gujarati, Punjabi and Hindi, Arabic, !Mandarin and Cantonese, to name a few more, to elementary stu- dents who wish to stay in touch with their far-flung roots. The evidence is clear. the world is corrin- to Durham. Some may worry about that, just as those \% ho were already here wor- ried about influ\es of first Irish and later Italian immigranLs earlier this century. But their concerns were proven unfounded, after a time of adjust- ment on each side, and Canada has gone From strenoth to strength as a result of each wave of new blood And with the development of mechanisms and organizations to cater to imrnigranLs catapulted frorn their culture to our multi -culture, the time of adjustment gro%s shorter. Heritage language classes are part of that: new immigrants are encouraged to hold on to what the,. care about most from their culture. This too is causing some concern. There are those who say multicul- turalism splits Canada into hundreds of fragments, and the newcomers should be encouraged to adopt the major[[} culture as quickly as possible. These are the proponents of the "too man cooks spoil the broth" school. But look around: Canada, despite the antics of politicians wheeling and dealing in Otta%va. is a good place to live. As the ads say, last year Canada was rated the best place in the world to live. It's hard to believe this is in spite of immigration from all over the world: it's much more likely that it is a direct consequence of it. In Canada we have a case of many cooks creatine: not a lousy soup, but one heck of a smorgasbord. The world is coming to Durham. Let's accept it w nth open arms. Letters ,.r L--oll '' f THE UNDEWFAKEIR 1?(aifriil 4 Fiscal reform must become priority To the editor. I've decided to write about the fiscal system but not because it must be entirely reformed in order to be fairer and simpler. We have a serious problem: the accumula- tion of huge provincial and feder- al deficits and a national debt which is out of control. There are two ways to solve this crisis: to reduce governments' expenses and to reform our ailing fiscal system. There is no political party, however, that is determined to take that way. Political parties are still in for costly and irrespon- sible promises. In a letter published Wednes- day July 22, one can read: -In The News Advertiser wel- comes letters to the editor on topical issues, controversial matters and anything else of interest to our readers. Canada, tax rates are graduated, as your income: increases so does the income tax". People must remem- ber that Michael Wilson has wide- ly mitigated the progressiveness of the income tax in 1987. He reduced the number of marginal tax rates from 10 to 3 and the maximum rate went from 50 per cent to 44 per cent. That rate applies to those who earn more than 555,000 a year. It means that the maximum marginal tax rate is the same whether you earn S56,000, S5(X),000 or S1 million a PUD year. The income tax in Canada is far from being fair. It causes a sig- nificant loss of revenue for the federal government, that's why it imposed the GST in 1991, a regressive tax harmful to the econ- omy because it discourages con- sumption. One can also read in the same letter: "Many of the so called loopholes are a result of misinfor- mation and not fact". How do you explain that every time someone proposes to eliminate loopholes, rich investors and businessmen strongly protest in order to kill a real fiscal reform'' Two examples come in mind: The Kenneth Carter commission for a fairer tixal sys- tem in 1967, and 1n 198 1, the attempt by the liberal minister of finance, Allen MacEachen, to eliminate some loopholes. Both were harshly denounced by busi- ness representatives. All this proves that loopholes are real and businessmen will fight to keep them alive. Incidentally, the shares and stocks purchase in order to defer the tax to pay was widely used, and still is, by presidents of large companies. Allen MacEachen tried to cancel it, but faile,ln addition, corporations antn ul: very little to Ottawa's revenues. less than 20 per cent-, the ratio fell dramatically for the past 20 years. The people must demand that a true fiscal reform and a drastic reduction in government's expens- es be- the main issues during the next federal election. When I retired from Ajax poii- tics last year, I left with a sense of foreboding with regard to the pro- posal by regional council to locate a new multi-million dollar water supply plant on the Ajax water - trout. Yes, I was upset about the loss Spf lakefront parkland, and yes, I was concerned that the integrity of our beautiful lakefront was to be compromised. However, the other issue - that of provision of safe drinking water and the secu- rity of supply of that water is the stuff that my nightmares are made of. We in Ajax/Pickering have a good life in our towns, they are warm, caring communities - great places to raise our families. My husband and I came to Ajax in 1978 with our two babies and felt an immediate sense of "home". Many of you will understand what I mean because you've experienced that feeling too. 10 When life is so good we can become a little complacent. We don't want to worry or give thought to those issues that are so complex and sometimes a little frightening. The issue of water quality can be difficult to under- stand. Evidence on both sides can be conflicting and confusing. Its easy to be an ostrich and stick our head in the sand, and leave it to our local and regional politicians to sort out and make the decision for us. After all we elected them to make those decisions. jBut remember - politicians are ust like all of us - they are ordi- nary men and women - they don't have any greater expertise on the issue of water quality than we do. Don't give them blind trust on this one - try to find out for your- selves just what this "water plant issue" is all about - you owe it to yourselves, your children and their children. Here are a few items to consid- er. 1) The new water plant site was chosen (in my view) for political and financial expediency. Most of the land is currently owned by the region of Durham; it was the least costly site option. 2) According to our politicians Sive must have a new waterplant to service future development in our area. 3) The intake pipe at the pro- posed site will be laid approxi- mately 8,000 ft. out into the Lake Ontario a scant 2-2 miles from the E sewage treatment plant (York Durham) and about 2 1/2 miles .:Read th e Advertiser three times each week ._= from the Pickering nuclear plant. 4) The York -Durham sewer emits approximately 80 million gallons a day of treated sewage into the lake. 5) The nuclear plant emits 2.4 million gallons per minute when it runs at full capacity. Yes - that's 2.4 million gallons per minute!! 6) The nuclear plant is an aging facility and has had a number of problems over the years - the latest being the serious tritium leak on Sunday, Aug. 2/1992, resulting in shut -down of Ajax and Whitby water supply plants. 7) The jury is still out on whether there is a co -relation between a higher incidence of birth defects in our area and emis- sions from the nuclear plant. The minister of environment will soon make a decision as to whether or not it's safe to go ahead with this proposal. Her decision will come within the next few weeks. As residents of Ajax/Pickering there are a number of things you can do if you are as concerned as I am. 1) Become as informed as you can: a) Call your local councillors at 683-4550 (or write them). b) Call all regional councillors at 668-7711 or 686-2401 - Regional H.Q. (or write them). c) Write or call the minister of environment the Hon. Ruth Grier at 15th Floor, 135 St. Clair Ave. W., M4V IP5,Tel. 323-4360. d) Call Sherrill Willard - Ajar Save The Waterfront Committee, Tel. 686-0654 - 37 Pittman Cres., Ajax LIS 3G4. The new water plant may be safe - it may not. Personally I'm scared, for my family and yours. No one has been able to prove to me definitively that I shouldn't be scared. I do know that I don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that I don't want us to drink our water from a pipe that is locat- ed close to an aging, leaking nuclear plant and an extremely large sewer. You - you'll have to do your homework and make up your own minds - and you'll have to do it fast. The battle continued for about another 15 minutes as the fish made two more long runs before finally succumbing to vander CruNsen's landing net. Upon landing the fish, vander Cruysen did not think it was any- where near the 40 -Ib. mark. But the Nk"hitby weigh station results proved otherwise.
