are needed
to knit for
homeless
Couple aims to help
city's street people
AJAX-PICKERING - A Pickering couple is hop-
ing the community will knit together to warm the
homeless this winter.
Johann and Robert Pierce want to organize a huge
knitting bee so Toronto -area street people will have
warm scarfs, hats and gloves when the weather gets
bitter.
"I've noticed a lot more people living on the
streets," says Mrs. Pierce, who became concerned dur-
ing a recent trip to downtown Toronto. "The cold
nights are going to come quicker this year. I wouldn't
want to be out there."
The Pierces have contacted some knitting -supply
companies and already have promises of donations if
they can find volunteers to knit.
"What we really treed are the knitters," says Mrs.
Pierce, who hopes to start distributing warm goodies
to the homeless by October. "My main goal is to actu-
ally go out and hand them out to people."

can knit or distribute items. Donations of knitting sup-
plies would also be welcome but cash will not be

Liberal hopefuls

DURHAM - The economy is
the public's top issue, say all
three candidates seeking the local
Liberal party's nomination for the
next federal election.
Addressing about 40 people at
an all -candidates' meeting at St.
George's Anglican Church in
Pickering Village Thursday, the
three aspiring politicians also
expressed their opposition to the
North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA).
Brian McKinnon
said 90 per cent of the
people he's talked to
have concerns about
the economy and jobs.
"People are hurting
and people don't have
jobs. There's a grow-
ing concern about our "s
security in this coun-
try," he said.
Mr. McKinnon's
being challenged by
Chaitanva Kalevar and
Dan McTeaguc in his
bid for the Liberal Chaitan
nomination for
Ontario Riding, which
includes all of Picker -
..ng and Ajax and most
of Whitby.
Our economic
problems can't be

continues in Ottawa,"
Mr. Kalevar charged.
"We have branch -
plant thinking by a
branch -plant presi-

Brian) Mulroney got
us into this problem."

Mr. McTeaguc said
that, to turn around the
economy, "First we've
got to get rid of a gov-
ernment that's com-
mitted to destroying
the country from the
outside."
He claimed the
GST is a "regressive
lax" that should be replaced by a
tax based on income.
Mr. Kalevar agreed the GST is
a "regressive tax because it's a
Tory tax and Tories are regres-
sive."
Mr. Mulroney "forced through
legislation the majority of Cana-
dians objected to," Mr. McKin-
non said. "They're taxing the
middle class and the working
poor, the people who can't afford
it."
The government should be tax-
ing rich people and big corpora-
tions, he added.
On free trade, Mr. Kalevar
said, "There's little the Tory gov-
ernment does that I'm for. I
opposed free trade in 1988 and I
oppose NAFTA."
When the free trade deal with
the U.S. was being negotiated, the
federal government "promised a
lot of adjustment pro-
grams and workers
who lost jobs would

be taken care of, but
nothing happened.
They were empty
promises. The only
thing they had was
UIC (unemployment
insurance) and that
was cut back. The
only thing left was
welfare," Mr. Kalevar
said.
Mr. McTeaguc
a Ka'e,ar called NAFTA a
"joke. There isn't any-
thing different than
the last one (the U.S.
free trade deal) and
we should fight it so it
doesn't see the light
of day."
He said, as a result
of NAFTA, Canada
could be subjected to
harassment by the
U.S., similar to what
happened to the soft-
wood lumber sector.
He added there are no
adjustment programs
proposed with the new
tr.,.Jc deal.
Mr. McKinnon
reported that 500,000
Canadian jobs had
been lost since the
U.S. free trade deal
came into effect.
"Talks suggest
we're in for another
round" of job losses,
he said.
Issues such as
workers' rights and
workplace health and
safety aren't part of
the U.S. deal or with
NAFTA, Mr. McKin-
non said. "You and I are being
kept in the dark," he added.
The Ontario Riding Liberal
nomination meeting will be held

Niagara cops
impound car
in Pickering
PICKERING - Niagara
Regional Police have impounded
a car here that belonged to a man
murdered in Fort Erie three
months ago.
Durham Regional Police
seized the unplated Chevette
Wednesday from 2705 Brock Rd.
and handed it over to Niagara
Police.
The car belonged to Vito Ciril-
lo, whose body was found burned
and wrapped in carpet in Fort Eric
in May.
Niagara Police Det. Damian
Parrent says the alleged murderer,
James Courville, took the car
from the scene of the crime and
was killed two days later near
Ottawa.
When the car broke down here,
Mr. Courville reportedly gave it
to a tow -truck driver in return for
a ride to a bus stop. The car was
then sold two more times.
Det. Parrent says the car will
be returned to Mr. Cirillo's fami-
ly.
No welcome at
PICKERING - A man knocking on the wrong door was greeted by a
rifle to his head Wednesday night.
Durham Regional Police say a man looking for his wife knocked at
the wrong door at a townhouse on Whites Rd. in Pickering around 11:30
p.m.
The occupant of the house got out a 12 -gage shotgun, pointed it at the
unannounced guest and marched him onto the sidewalk, say police.
The occupant then went back inside the house.
A 31 -year-old suspect was arrested and charged with pointing a
firearm and possession of dangerous weapons.

AJAX-PICKERING - Youths with a yearning for the sea may be
interested in joining the Ajax -Pickering Navy League.
Registration for the group will be held Tuesdays, Aug. 25 and Sept. 1,
from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in matting room 2 of the Ajax Community Centre,
on Centennial Rd.
Males and females from 10 to 19 years are welcome.
Navy League members will learn seamanship, take trips, learn march-
ing, play in the band and take part in parades.
There's no cost to join and uniforms are provided free.
The group will meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the; HMS Ajax
Room of the community centre starting Sept. 8.

But the drug, FK 506, has
been "working really well" so
far, says Steve, who talks to Ben-
jamin every day. After three
days, the numbers which indicate
qee failure of his liver began to
crease along with his blood
pressure.
While doctors are questioning
whether Benjamin is rejecting his
liver or if his bile ducts are clos-
ing, the drug "will give him a
chance to grow. If he does need
another transplant, his body will
be more responsive when heal-
ing," says Steve. "The drug, all
around, is really good for him."
Each morning, Benjamin goes
to the hospital for blood tests. "A
couple of times, they've had to
pin him down because they've
missed his veins. They've even

Benjamin and Sharon have
been staying at Ronald McDonald
House and enjoyed a Pittsburgh
Pirates baseball game where the
youngster tried to catch a foul
ball, his father reports.
Still, Benjamin is anxious to
return home. "Just the other day,
he asked Sharon, 'Are we going
to stay here forever I want to go
home right now'," Steve recalls.
Doctors will decide Monday
how much longer Benjamin will
remain in Pittsburgh. It's likely
he'll need to return there some-
time in the future.

Certain residents of Ajax got an unappetizing "notice" stuffed into their
mailboxes Thursday night. An anonymous writer thought all her/his neigh-
bors should know that he/she recently found a mouse tail in a pizza
ordered from a local outlet. The writer muses, "I wonder who got the rest
Of it."
We shudder at the thought.
But what's really unappetizing is what the writer omitted – a signature.
The memo ended with a call for residents to bombard the regional health
department with questions about a certain pizza store.
It makes us wonder if the writer is legitimate and whether heJshe took
the time to call the health department for himself or herself. Certainly,
health inspectors will visit a restaurant upon complaint and will make a
professional decision as to whether it's safe to eat there.
But then, it's so much easier to write an anonymous note and ask your
neighbors to do your work for you. Or was it a case of revenge against a
restaurant for an entirely different reason, such as getting fired? We don't
know.
But we're grateful to the anonymous writer, because it gives us a
chance to point out we interviewed the health departrnent not long ago.
Would it surprise anyone to know rodents aren't unheard of in restaurants?
Food inspectors make sure there are no serious infestations by ordering the
owners to take proper steps -- and they will close a restaurant if necessary
Granted, if someone really did find a mouse tail in their pizza, it must
have been a horrifying, sickening experience. But the best solution to any
problem is to take it to those in authority. If the writer had done that. and
still didn't get satisfaction, titers he or she shouldn't have been afraid to sign
their name.
It reminds us of a note delivered to the newsroom this week regarding
the Pickering nuclear plant tritium spill. The unsigned mote asked, "Why
aren't you guys on top of this stery?" Had our little note writer signed a
name or even bothered to call us, we could have assured him/her we were
on "top" of the story and had been writing about it since in happened
But the bottom line is, we who receive antonymous notes must disre-
gard them. Who knows if there was a mouse tail in a pizza? Who knows if
there's a reader legitimately concerned with our nuclear plant coverage?
People who won't identify themselves will say anything.

I am appalled at the federal
government's latest tax hit.
On Saturday, July 11 1992, 1
collected a parcel from friends
in England, a gift for my daugh-
ter, for her forthcoming mar-
rirlge. To receive this parcel I
had to pay $9.95. I felt I was
being held ransom for my
daughter receiving a wedding
gift.
Apparently this is a `new
gimmick' put forth by the 'feds'
to help increase efficiency of our
postal service. This is a joke in
our village, our post office was
closed 15 months ago and it's
taken us until now to get a ser-
vice which is still inefficient.
After two hours of constant
phoning I managed to get verbal
promises from government
offices to send me forms to
appeal the charges.
I wonder how many people
are aware of this latest govern-
ment scam — to be penalized for
having gifts sent from family
and friends outside Canada.
As the wedding is in Septem-
ber and most relatives are in the
U.K., I think I shall be spending
my summer chasing the govern-
ment to reimburse me for the
ransomed gifts.

Pickering, like many communities, seems to be
plagued with rude parkers - the inconsiderate
drivers who park their cars across sidewalks.
This plague seems to affect all streets at one
time or another forcing pedestrians, parents with
strollers and people with wheelchairs to leave the
safety of the sidewalk and detour around the vehi-
cle.
Durham's finest do not have the time required to

Why don't people help their guests to find suit-

parking lot?

laid in last weekend's death of a teen who
walked into tratT-rc following a minor accident

Sheila Jagnarine, 39, of Scarborough,
turned herself in and was charged by Whitby
OPP Tuesday with failure to remain at the
scene of an accident which claimed the life of
Maridtarn student Kenneth Vrzovski,19.
Const. Bill Muldoon says a woman, who
believes she may have run over the foot or leg
of the victim, was in shock and left the acci-
dent scene after 20 minutes.
Police believe Mr. Vrzovski may have been
disoriented after a minor accident just moments
earlier. The teen had reportedly been driving at
a fast speed and was weaving in and out of
traffic when he lost control and drifted toward

Organization a must in creating a comfortable dorm
Dormitory life presents many
challenges that test each student's
problem solving skills. For starters,
living in the limited space of a
dorm room requires planning and
organization.
According to Tom Nevermann, a
specialist in space planning and
home organization, all you need are
the right tools and a little bit of
ingenuity to transform even the
smallest cubicle into a comfortable,
functional living space.
Generally, dorm rooms are small,
with limited storage space. "To
make the room functional," the
space planner says, "you'll need to
follow two basic rules."
• Rule one: "Bring only what
you'll really use, plus a few decora-
tive items that reflect your person-
ality." Remember that you'll collect
new memorabilia at college, so
don't bring all of your 'trophies'
with you. Leave the encyclopedia
set at home, too - you'll have the
entire college library at your dis-

and store essential supplies within
reach. Put non -essentials elsewhere,
since clutter can be distracting.
Again, storage bins are available
with casters, and can be rolled
away beneath the desk, where
they're out of sight, but accessible.
They also can be used alongside
your desk to hold file folders and
notebooks.
To keep track of assignments, you
may want to borrow a tip from suc-
cessful executives: post your class
schedule, appointments, deadlines,
exams and due dates on a wall or
desk calendar, where they won't be
forgotten.
Planning ahead is an important
key to success - and once you've
written it all down, you're free to
concentrate on having fun (until
exam time rolls around, of course)!

Preparing your child for the day-
to-day routine of school work after
a long summer of recess is no easy

To ease the transition, experts sug-
gest that, in the weeks before
school begins, you try to make

your child memorize a lot of letters

The Sesame Street Travel Games,
for example, feature favorite char-
acters from Sesame Street and are

to grasp the fundamentals of the
alphabet, counting and puzzles.

PICKERING - The Pickering Red Sox LOEB Glendale mosquito rep
baseball team is off to the Ontario 'AA' Baseball Championships after
beating Oshawa in a hard-fought series.
The Red Sox will represent eastern Ontario at the provincials after
defeating Oshawa in the best -of -three Eastern Ontario Baseball Associa-
tion final series two games to one.
All three games were nail -biters, decided
,f • w. by one run with the final two decided in the

”"' In game one of the series, Pickering won
a pitchers' duel by a 1-0 score. John Gregson
scored the only run of the game, beating out a throw
to home in the sixth inning.
Michael Roga recorded the win on the mound in relief, going three
innings, giving up no runs on two hits, one walk and a strikeout. Pat
Tobin started the game, working four innings, giving up no runs on one
hit, one walk and a strikeout.
Pickering followed with a sloppy effort in the second game. Despite
committing three errors and allowing 12 walks, Pickering held a 10-8
advantage through five innings.
However, Oshawa struck for three runs in its last at -bat to post an 11-
10 comeback victory.
The deciding game was Pickering's biggest of the season, and the
squad put forth a strong effort. The Red Sox twice fought back when it
appeared they were down and out to record an extra -inning 8-7 victory.
With Oshawa leading 6-3, Pickering battled back to score three runs
in the sixth inning to be it up and send it into extra innings. TJ. Kemp's
single brought in Chris Lawrence and Gregson to cut Oshawa's lead to
6-5. Tobin scored the equalizer after he singled, stole second and third
and eventually stole home to force extra innings.
The story in extra innings was Matthew O'Leary. He caught a line
drive to right field that prevented more Oshawa runs in an inning in
which the Motor City boys scored once.
In Pickering's half of the frame, O'Leary smashed a double to bring
home Sean Docherty. Chris Lawrence put down a perfect sacrifice bunt
to move O'Leary to third. The Oshawa catcher's throw to get O'Leary
was wild and O'Leary scrambled home with the game -winner, into the
arms of his elated teammates.
The Pickering Red Sox will compete in the Ontario `AA' Baseball
Championships in Barrie on the Labor Day weekend.

Pickering soccer team wins tourney title

girls' selects soccer teams met in
the final of the recent Wadlow
Invitational Soccer Tournament in
East York.
Pickering claimed a'_-1 win
over Ajar in the final to capture the
championship.
Pickering took an early, lead in
the final on a goal by Katie Mid-
dlebrook and then added an insur-
ance marker by Miki Orme on a
free kick from just inside centre
field.
Pickering's strong defence, led
by goalie Kelly McNabney, held
Ajax to a lone goal in the second
half.
Ajax and Pickering clashed in
the first game of the tourney, with
the contest ending in a 1-1 draw.
Kristina Carroll scored for Ajax
and Kaue Middlebrook replied for
Pickering with a little more than a
minute to play.
Ajax went on to beat
Unionvillel-0 in its next game.
Sarah Ripley scored for Ajax.
Pickering then beat host East
York 4-0. Katie Middlebrook had
two goals, with singles to Laura
Zcglen and Miki Orme.
In the third round, Ajax defeated
East York 3-0, while Pickering beat
Unionville by the same 3-0 score.
