The arena is expected to open September 1993 with construction starting this year. Its design includes skylights to reduce energy con- sumption, motion seniors that will automatically turn lights on in rooms being used, meeting rooms, and change rooms with showers. A coaches' room will be accessible to the handicapped and will also be used as a first-aid centre. The ice surface will be 85 feet by 185 feet with a spectator area that will accommodate 210 people. The town has set aside $1.5 million to spend on the project this year, with the remaining $2 million earmarked in the 1993 budget. It's expect- ed the town will get a deal on the price of construction through competi- tive construction bids due to the economy. Council endorsed calling pre -qualifying tenders at its Aug. 4 meeting, with councillors Eileen Higdon and Kip Van Kempen objecting. Both (11111 councillors wanted the town to wait until the provincial government commits itself to contributing funds for the project. 40 Sex charges laid in local incident PICKERING - A Scarborough man faces sex-related charges following an incident at a Picker- ing home. Metro Police say the incident involved a 14 -year-old girl from Knoxville, Tennesee who was visiting the area without her par- ents' knowledge or consent. Police say the girl began a relationship with a Toronto -area man while on vacation with her parents in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in July. He arranged for her to fly to Toronto Aug. 4 with- out her parents' permission, police say, and took her to a Pickering home. Metro Police were subse- quently contacted by Knoxville police and tracked a man down at a Scarborough address. A 29 -year-old Enchanted Hills Cres. resident is charged with abducting a person under 16 years old and sexual exploitation. In readiness for the 35 -mile Lake Ontario crossing, the team from the local police depart- ment held a practice run from Toronto to Whit- by on Tuesday. Greeting the canoe team as it paddled into the Whitby harbor was Durham Regional Police chief Trevor McCagherty. Chief McCagheny is confident the local team will do well in the race which nuts from Youngstown, New York to Balmy Beach in Toronto. "I"bey're in excellent shape. They've practised hard. We're expecting good result -s." Eight teams will compete in the race. Durham team member constable Scott Knapp expects his squad to place near the top. "We'll be o the top two or three for sure," says the 28 - year old police officer. Constable Keith Mondesire shams his col- league's confidence."We've been practising hard," he says. The team has been in training since May, canoeing three times a week. "They practise for three hours each time. It's all been on their personal time." cotes chief McCagherty. We've been talking about this Pitts- burgh thing for a long time." The Britskeys were notified on Monday evening that Ben- jamin should be in Pttisbttrgh by Thursday. Benjamin had been accepted by the Pittsburgh doctors into their study of the experimental drug called FK 506. However, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan refused to pay any of the costs to send Benjamin to the U.S. because the drug is consid- ered experimental. The trip will cost about S10,000, which the Britskeys could not afford a couple months ago. Sharon and Benjamin's father Steve went public with their plight earlier this summer. Since then, about $26,000 has been collected through dona- tions by individuals, clubs and businesses, a fund-raising party, a golf tournament and other events. "We've got more than enough money. We hoped to raised between $10,000 and $15,000," Sharon said. "The public response has just been fantastic." The Britskeys could be in Pittsburgh "anywhere from a week to a month," said Sharon. "I'm hoping it's just a couple of weeks." Benjamin was to meet with the doctors yesterday morning. "It's exciting and scary at the same time," Sharon said. The doctors will first have to get Benjamin off cyclosporine, the anti-rejection medication he currently uses. Cyclosporine has "a lot of side effects and, in Benjamin's case, it doesn't always work," noted Sharon. Doctors are "using this drug (FK 506) standardly on all trans- plant patients in Pittsburgh right now. The doctors' study of FK 506 is now in its fifth year. If the drug doesn't work and the rejection of the liver isn't halted, then Benjamin will need a second liver transplant. 0 0 0 LJ By NORMAN NELSON Durham Starr DURHAM - The provincial NDP gov- ernment is gambling that casinos can boost a struggling economy in the province. Treasurer Floyd Laughren's spring budget included plans for up to six casi- nos in Ontario. Regional chairman Gary Herrema, however, says he'd be happy to call all bets off. "I have no interest in casinos. I don't give a damn if one ever comes to Durham," he says. At least one Durham municipality, however, is toying with the idea. Oshawa council has sent a letter to Queen's Park asking to be kept informed of the province's deliberations on casi- nos. The author of the motion, councillor Brian Nicholson, notes council's action does not constitute approval for a casino in Oshawa; it only expresses an interest in having one. He says it makes "good sense" to keep an oar in the water on the issue, since a casino could bring in considerable tourism and other benefits. Playing the Toronto Saracens in the final, the Wanderers won 14- 7 to take the championship at the first Alliston Potato Fest Rugby Tournament. Annette Shiels scored a try and added two conversions to pace the Wanderers in the final. Doreen Fernandes scored the other try. The Wanderers advanced to the final after beating Balmy Beach 12-7 in overtime. Fernandes scored the try in regulation time with Annette Shiels booting the conversion. Annette Shiels scored the game -winning try in overtime and also added the convert. In round- robin play, the Wanderers were unbeaten and they weren't scored upon in their two games. The Ajax women's team opened the tournament with a 43-0 drub- bing of Grimsby. Annette Shiels scored two trys and added four con- verts, while Gina Minutillo also had two trys. The club has proposed run- ning clinics within the Pickering Hockey Association using the Pan- thers' coaching staff. The Panthers will also have PHA players and teams regularly at its practices. "More than anything we plan to spend a lot of time and effort in developing young local hockey players.
