While some parts of the province experienced golf ball - sized hail and small tornadoes, police and fire departments here reported a quiet night with noth- ing worse than a few fender -ben- ders and a power outage in Picker- ing. Funnel clouds were sighted in various areas throughout the province, says Tom Noga of the Ontario weather centre. The clouds aren't considered torna- does unless they touch down; it's suspected there were touch downs in the Elora area, he adds. Both Ajax -based CHOO Radio and CITY TV reported that people saw funnel clouds in Pickering. A switch failure on a Hydro pole in the Finch Ave.-Rosebank Rd. area was likely due to light- Isning, says George Armstrong of Pickering Hydro. Dr. Johannes Baarbd, a chiropractor with offices in the plaza, doesn't want the adult -only video store there, but says there's nothing he can do other than raise his concerns. A member of the Christian Chiropractors of Cana- da, Dr. BaarM says "Pornography is detrimental to the family. It promotes sexual and physical abuse of children and women, and it's addictive. There are so many factors of that nature, it's a negative influence on the community." Some of his clients have told him the adult -only video store would be a "negative influence in the community," Dr. BaarW says. He contends the movies available at the store are "demeaning to women and children and will tear down the family. When you tear down the family, you tear down society." He does say the video outlet "won't be detrimental to my business. My business is to get people well, not to tear them down. I think I'm okay with my practice here." Mr. Paterson says his adult content videos will include X-rated movies, B films and horror flicks. He says he may carry adult magazines, but he won't sell sex aids. Admittance is limited to people with an age -of - majority card or with three pieces of identification, including one with a photograph. The windows to the store have been covered so people can't look in, Mr. Paterson says. All movies have been approved by the Ontario Film Review Board and none of the movies of a sexu- al nature depict violence, bestiality or sex involving children. Almost 90 per cent of those victims won't be wearing a Iife jacket. Boaters don't intend to fall in the water. A Pickering man and his friend whose canoe capsized in Pigeon Lake on the weekend didn't intend to fall in the water. But they did. The Pickering man's friend lost his life. It does no good to dwell on "what ifs" and "should haves". Perhaps the victim, a non -swimmer, would have been spared if he'd been wearing a life jacket. Perhaps not. But his tragic death, like the other hundreds of tragic deaths we can expect each summer, should serve as a painful reminder about the single most important piece of water -safety equipment -- a life jacket or person- al flotation device. They will keep you afloat, keep you warm in cold water and help you to be more visible. Swimmers and non -swimmers alike need to wear one while boating, skiing, fishing or taking part in other water sports. Accidents happen quickly. The Red Cross suggests you wear a PFD or life jacket stamped with the approval of' the federal Department of Transportation (DOT). Although "bulky and uncomfortable", the jackets have the ability to turn an unconscious person in the water from the face -down to the face -up position. PFDs have less buoyancy but will keep you afloat and should tarry the same DOT approval. Hunters and fishermen can choose from models with extra pockets, hooks and loops to accommodate tackle, ammunition and bait. Once you purchase a life jacket or PFD, familiarize yourself with it. Try it on, checking all ties, zippers and buckles. Boaters should insist everyone on board is wearing a jacket. Having them stowed somewhere in the boat is useless. The proper use of a jacket or PFD could mean the difference between life or death. Don't leave shore without it. Letters Save trees from- development To the editor, I must commend the developer who is developing the parcel of land which sits across from the Arnold Estate on Hwy. 2 in Ajax (just east of the new Canadian Tire store). I was delighted to see that the majority of the century home that sits there has been spared the misfortune of the wreckine ball. The assumption here is that the developer saved the structure of its own accord, not as a result of pres- sure from LACAC. However, this is where my praise ends. Upon approaching the aforementioned century home a few weeks ago, I was devastated to see that the multitude of aged trees that once stood majestically around this charming home had all been Cut down. This approach that many devel- opers hold, where they require a com- pletely clean slate devoid of greenery, belongs in the 60s (tear down the old, put up the new.) The decision to remove these trees only shows a complete lack of imag- ination on the part of this developer! As Ajar continues to develop, the vol- ume of traffic on Hwy. 2 will only increase as each day passes. Wouldn't it have made sense to spare the life of these magnificent oxygen -producing giants" Their presence would only have been ben- eficial in helping offset the effect of pollu- tants which will belch endlessly from the passing traffic. More than 200 members, including most of the surviving past presidents of the branch, are expected to attend the event. The Legion is also marking the anniversary with week-long cel- ebrations until Saturday. Activities so far have includ- ede a church parade and outdoor service adjacent to the swim- ming pool at the municipal building, a barbecue and a sports tournament, which included snooker, darts and horseshoes. A reunion was held Tuesday when ex -members of the club met and renewed old friend- ships. On Thursday, a past presi- dents' reunion night will be held. The week's activities will wind up on Friday with a Monte Carlo night and a sports day on Saturday where free corn on the cob will be served followed by a pot luck supper and a '40s dance in the evening. All event,-,, with the exception of the dinner, are open to the public. There are no surviving mem- bers from 50 years ago, but the branch has two members, Tom Veitch of Woodhouse Cres. and Ben Severs of Brock St. Picker- ing Village, who joined the branch 47 years ago. Veitch, who came with his father to live in the town in 1942 when it did not even have a name — it was part of the then Township of Pickering — recalls that there were no houses south of Hwy. 401. There wasn't even a Hwy. 401 and the acreage south of the freeway was one vast munitions plant, ringed with barbed wire. There were 30 miles of rail- way in the town, Veitch said. Severs, a retired Ajax fire- fighter, who came to work in the town when he was discharged from the armed forces in 1945, said there were only 597 perma- nent homes, north of Hwy. 301. He worked initially for the War Assets Corporation, became a volunteer firefighter in 1952 and later joined the permanent staff before retiring l l years ago. The founding members of the Legion first met in the Carter Hall building, close to where the town's outdoor swimming pool is now located. Later they moved to a large recreational building in Cedar Park and then to a building on Harwood Ave. where the Pennyworth's depart- ment store now stands. This burned down and the Legion decided to build on its present sit.-, Hunt St. Here again another fire destroyed the build- ing in 1971, but the Legion, undaunted, rebuilt and in 1977 enlarged with a $250,000 addi- tion. During its 50 years, the Ajax Legion has donated between $500,000 and $1 million to local organizations and charities and to needy individuals. It's expected there will be a new offer from management. The CAS board of directors' executive committee met with senior management late last week "to review the current labor situa- tion in order to seek a resolution to the work stoppage", said CAS executive director Morton Marder. As a result, he said, a resolution to hopefully end the strike" will be considered by the full board of directors at a special meeting tonight- ` In view of this commitment for the board to meet on this matter, unionized staff were asked to return to work prior to the board meeting, but have refused," he said. More than 80 members of the Canadian Union of Public Employ- ees, Local 3223, walked off the job throughout Durham Region last Tuesday. Yearly wages range from a low of $18,000 for a clerical worker to a high of $46,000 for a stop -level social worker. A staff of 23 management per- sonnel continue to provide essen- tial services out of the main Oshawa office at 200 John St., but branch offices in Ajax and Uxbridge have been closed Money is the key issue. The president of the Durham Region Foster Parents Association stepped into the fray earlier this week, urging both patties to rethink their positions. "A quick resolution is impera- tive," said Ron MacQueen. While management is doing its best, he said, "It stands to reason that certain important services can't be rendered. The Oshawa and District Real Estate Board set a July record for residential sales last month, as 481 homes were sold. ODREB president Mark Smith notes that's a 26.6 -per cent increase over July of 1991. "This is the second month in a row that we've seen increases in residential sales over the same month in 1991. At the beginning of the year, we were behind 1991, but we are starting to gain momentum and will likely end the year on a high note," Mr. Smith says. In July of last year, 380 homes changed hands. So far this year, 3,455 homes have been sold, down from 4,003 by the end of July, 1991. That's a 13.7 -per cent decrease. The average sales price in July was $145,121, with 49 per cent of homes selling for between 5100,000 and S 150,000. Homes were on the market for STOCRAT RETR an average of 54 days and sold for 94.6 per cent of the listed price. In July 1991, the average home went for S157,557. Songwriters Ian Jack, 34, of Ajax and Bob Han, 34, of Picker- ing, who form Long Rider, wrote and co-produced the self -titled f album which took a month to record at a Scarborough studio. So far, reaction to the album has been favorable, say the two, who wrote the music for the 10 -song album in six months before heading into the studio. Distributed by Sony of Canada, the album's first single Cajun Moan is now finding its way onto the airwaves of local radio sta- tions. "Country 59 (AM Toronto) started playing it on its show New Country the next day after we gave (the single) to them," says Hart, who plays electric guitar and pro- vides backing vocals on the album. "Usually, there's quite a waiting list Of new songs to be played. We were quite proud of that." The single Cajun Moon was also made into a video to be pre- miered on Much Music's Outlaws And Heroes show Sunday, Aug. 16. Directed by friend David Mcll- vrade, the video took several week- ends of work to complete. It was shot at Kink Sounds where the album was recorded. "They (Much Music) had a meeting and decided to put the video on the station right away. We were quite happy about it," says Jack, who sings lead vocals on the album. Jack says the recording process was "fabulous" as the duo was sur- rounded by a who's who of trap stu- dio musicians, including fiddle player Don Reed of Dwight Yoakum's band, and guitarist Steve Patico who has been voted the top country guitarist by the Canadian Country Music Association for the past five years. The chemistry which developed among Han and Jack and the studio musicians was a highlight of the recording experi- ence. "At first we were a little unnerved by working with these studio musicians, says Jack. "Some of these guys have played with the best in the business, but I think we gradually earned their respect. Most of all, they really liked the songs. They commented on how much they liked the songs, and that's unusual." Hart describes the music of Long Rider as `new country' with traditional overtones. Old-time fid- dle is used extensively on the album which features the tight vocal harmonies of Jack and Hart wrapped around a good mix of up- tempo country and ballads "Ibe first tune, Cajun Moan, is definitely 'new country', but some of the ballads can be quite tradition- al," explains Jack. "It's more 'new country' than anything," adds Hart. "It's not Hank Williams Sr." Jack and Hart are hoping the album and the single will make it onto the play list of local country outlet CHOO radio in Ajax. Pickering Power blasted into the championship final by blanking Hamil- ton 4-0. Pickering finished preliminary -round play with a perfect 3-0 record, allowing just one goal in three games. Pickering first defeated Caledon -1-0. Matt Bellew, scored three times with Woaxls netting the other marker. Ajax Spartans beat Pickering to win eastern Ontario crown AJAX - The Ajax Spartans Pickering Village Sports major mosquito rep baseball team knocked off the Pickering Red Sox to capture the Eastern Ontario Tournament�i championship last weekend. The Spartans, after l-? losing their opening game of the double -knock- out tournament, proceeded to win five straight contests, including two against Pickering, to claim the title. In the deciding game, solid pitching, fielding and some clutch hitting by Ajax batters led to a 4-2 win over Pickering. Pitcher Brad Virostek gave up seven hits, strik- ing out four and walking none. Sean Balcarras was the hero after tripling to left field with the game tied to give Ajax a two -run cushion. Virostek smashed a dou- ble, with singles to Evan Risko, Jeff Greene and Doug Soutar. Virostek helped his own cause by cleanly fielding four line drives. Jeff Mitchell valiantly tried to catch a pop-up, cutting his elbows in the Process. James David made three diving catches in centre field. Ajax set up the deciding contest by nipping Pickering 10-9. Win- ning pitcher James David and Kyle Sheppard combined to strike out three batters. Chris Taylor was solid in left field, tracking down five fly balls, while Virostek threw out two base runners. Sheppard had two triples and a single; Risko had a double and two singles. Baker and James David each stroked a double, with base hits to Greene, Balcarras, Tavlor and Mitchell. A late goal gave Ajax a 1-0 win, described by Warriors' coach Mike Brown as "an important victory" to his club's chances of finish- ing first in the standings. Going into the contest, Ajax sat three points behind first -place Turul with a game in hand. With the win, Ajax moved to within a point of Turul with one game in hand. With under two minutes to go in the con- test, Dave Campbell took an Ajax corner kick and blasted it to the far comer of the net where centre back Norm LeBrun headed the ball- in to break the scoreless tie. Although Turul held the momentum in the first half of the contest, Ajax had most of the scoring chances. Striker John Behm was robbed of a goal, after breaking through the Turul defence. The ensuing shot by Behm went past the goaltender and was headed for the net when a Turul defender man- aged to boot it away on the goal line. The play was fairly even in the second half, but this time it was Turul's turn to miss a golden scoring opportunity. In the last 15 min- utes of play, Ajax goalie Adam Wood was forced to make a diving save on a shot headed for the net. The Upper Deck Warriors' record is now eight wins, two ties and two losses. The Warriors' next game is against Durham County at the Oshawa Civic Fields Thursday. Ajax's next home game is against Oshawa Italia at the Ajax Community Centre's Monarch Field on Sunday.
