Nuclear plant officials have the jurisdiction to decide what constitutes an emergency, says Mr. Muir. "We determine what an emergency is because we're sit- ting there with charts and data." "I just love animals," admits the 16 -year-old, who's working at Pampered Pooch, a dog grooming shop. "It's definitely something I'd like to do again." Christine is one of 10 Pick- ering students taking part in the YMCA's Summer Start Pro- gram (formerly WOW). Their minimum wages are funded through the Canada Employ- ment Centre. The eight-week program finds jobs for participants, who are encouraged to consider future career goals. It also teaches them such job -search skills as filling out resumes and applications, and interview techniques. "Their confidence levels really build up," notes assistant trainer Chris Dunn. "Many find new skills they never thought they had." Though the YMCA found job placements for the partici- pants, students "are treated like any other employee. They receive no special treatment, _even if their employers don't pay them. `"They learn the responsibili- ties that go with a job. If they're not happy with their _.placement, it's their responsi- ,bility to tell their employer." The program also benefits employers, "who may need ;extra help but can't afford another pair of hands," sug- gests Mr. Dunn. "Many feel they are doing some good in the community by giving kids work experience." Pampered Pooch owner Elaine Davidson agrees. "It exposes them to something they've never done before," she explains. "A lot have no idea of what work's all about. On Thursday, Michael Gamba was named Canadian Firefighter of the Year, an award presented by the Insurance Bureau of Cana- da. The award is truly something he and the entire Pickering Fire Department can be proud of. The rescue took place after an aluminum boat capsized in Lake Ontario near the Pickering nuclear plant. While two of the four men in the boat made it safely to shore, the other two chose to stay with the craft. Seven -foot waves and a rocky shoreline made it impossible to launch a rescue boat. Mr. Gamba donned a rubber dry suit and, tied to a life -line, entered the water. Thanks to his heroic efforts both men were pulled to shore, although one died when rescuers were unable to get his body temperature back to normal. As pointed out by Fire Chief Steve Stewart, "this award recog- nizes the efforts of firefighters everywhere" and the diversity of rescues they're involved in. Bob Hanna, Ajax Reader says no to adopting user fee for medical visits To the editor, - Re: The recent letter to the editor on adopting a user fee to visit your doctor. It won't work and shouldn't work. It is all very well to have a $10 user fee for a visit to your doctor's office, but he may say "I'll see you in a week" or what about those who need weekly allergy shots. Thea there are peo- ple who need to see a specialist or two. Ten dollars a visit could be $40 a month or even mane. A user fee will not only reduce visits to the doctor, but people will put off going when they shouldn't. That slight cold or that irritating cough that will "go away soon" could in fact be the symptom of something more serious- Of course there are peo- ple who see the doctor unneces- sarily but maybe the time they didn't should have been the one time they really needed to. Also, how and where do you draw the line from the really needy and the people who just get by? The Warriors, who were rcently nipped in the Motor City occer League's Summer Cup and have been suffering with an injury -rid - died line-up, " needed a big pick-me-up �f against the Strikers -- and they got it. The win keeps the Warriors in the hunt for first place in the league's First Division in a race which, according to Warriors' c—lach Mike Brown, is shaping a real dog fight. "It's a very heated battle for first place among Ajax, Turul and Adria," says Brown. "Both teams are two points up on us, but we have a game in hand" Incidentally, the Pickering squad has not beaten Ajax in the three years since the Strikers joined the league. Ajax opened the scoring early in the fust half after striker Allan 3raham was hauled down and a )enalty shot was called. Dave �ampbell scored on the shot. Nckering later evened the score which remained tied 1-1 at half- time. Chris Collie put Ajax ahead 2-1 on a perfect passing play early in the half and John Soler put the Warriors up by two goals after receiving a pass from Dave Camp- bell. Soler corralled the pass and put it under the Pickering goalie. Pickering scored in the last five minutes to end the scoring. The Ajax Upper Deck War- riors' record is six wins, two losses and two ties in league play. The Warriors' next outing is against chief rivals Oshawa Turul at the Ajax Community Centre's Monarch Field on Sunday. Ajax Snappers seventh in national women's slo-pitch competition AJAX - The Ajax Snappers masters over -35 women's slo-pitch team finished a respectable seventh in the nation after competing in the 'C' division at the National Slo-Pitch Championships in Grandmere, Quebec July 30. The Snappers were in fourth spot after the prelinlinan, round of the three-day tournament with a record of three wins and one loss, good enough for a berth in the playoffs. However, the Snappers were defeated in both their playoff games to settle for seventh place overall out of 17 teams. In the playoffs, the Ajax Snappers r dropped their opening game to Coin de Rocher from Grandmere 22-12. In the second playoff game, Ajax lost a w 'vti close one to Dr. J's from Barrie 10- The Ajax Snappers opened the 5L)OO PI TCH nationals with a 16-3 whipping of Clancy's Dynasty from Thorold, Ontario. End season in top spot in EOBA league Ajax midget ball reps finish with a flourish AJAX - The Ajax Spartans Curmann Contractors midget rep baseball team wrapped up first place in Eastern Ontario league play after three big wins last weekend. Last Saturday, the Ajacians defeated the Pickering Red Sox 7-3. Starting on the mound for Ajax was Jay Rodriguez who pitched four innings, allowing six hits and registering four strikeouts. Andrew Kolbin fin- ished the contest, giving up five hits and fanning three batters. The offence was led by Mike McKenzie who went four -for - four at the plate, blasting one double and three singles for two RBIs. Shawn Barnes and Cascy Chuaniuk poked two singles for one RBI each. Kolbin smacked three singles for two RBIs and Rodriguez hit two singles. On Sunday, the Ajax Spartans travelled to Belleville for a dou- bleheader. In game one, Ajax pulled out a 4-3 win with Greg Bailey throwing 4 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and two runs, while fanning four Belleville batters. McKenzie relieved in the fifth and sixth innings to down the Belleville offence, giving up only one hit while fanning two. The tired Ajax hitters were still able to do the job. Junior Brown smashed a triple, while Barnes had two singles in the game. Bailey and Gary Mulhall each had one single. The Ajax bats came alive in the second game, paving the way for a 7-1 win over Belleville to sweep the doubleheader. Gord Henderson and Chua- niuk each had two singles for two RBIs each. Singles were stroked by Scott Smith, Ryan Lowe, Barnes and Bailey. McKenzie pitched a strong game for Ajax, allowing only one run in five innings and earn- ing five strikeouts.
