Page 7 Firefighter wins bravery award for lake rescue By LINDA WHITE Staff Reporter PICKERING - A Pickering firefighter who pulled two men to shore after their boat capsized in frigid waters last year has been recognized nationally for his efforts. Michael Gamba is the Canadian Firefighter of the Year, an award to be presented by the Insur- ance Bureau of Canada at the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs in Cal- gary on Aug. 19. He'll also receive S5,(it><). "This award recognizes the efforts of firefight- ers everywhere" and the "diversity of rescues" they're involved in, Pickering fire chief Steve Stewart said at a press conference yesterday. "We're not just old smoke eaters who crawl into a lire and take a beating. It daily gets more complicated." Mr. Gamba and fellow crew members respond- ed to such an incident when an aluminum boat capsized in Lake Ontario near the Pickering nucle- ar plant in February 1991. Two of the four men in the boat had made their way to shore by the time help arrived. The other two chose to stay with the boat, one of whom lost his grip and began w float away. Seven -foot waves and a rocky shoreline made it impossible to launch a rescue boat. Mr. Gamba donned a rubber dry suit and, tied to a life -line, entered the water. Because of the waves and the life -line, he was only able to get about 30 feet from shore and had to wait until the men drifted close to him. As he pulled the first man to safety, Mr. Gamba crashed against rocks on the shoreline, badly bruising his knee and foot. Time was against Mr. Gamba in his rescue of the second man, who was unconscious and weighed about 300 pounds because he was wear- ing a snowmobile suit and snow boots. Andrew Brian Rous, 27, ham't been heard from since July 14 when he left r a message on the answering machine at his Diefenbaker CL home. A credit card in his name has been used in Thunder Bay and Tillbury. Mr. Rous, also known as Brian Wheeler, is a housekeeper at the Ajax and Pickering General Hospital. He stands 5'4", weighs 125 pounds, has a slim build, short brown hair, a' moustache, brown eyes and a medium complexion. When last seen, Mr. Rous ^ was wearing navy pants, white ruining shoes and a short -sleeved blue T-shirt bearing the hospital logo. Staff Reporter DURHAM - The province's decision not to ban bungee jump- ing is an "excellent" one, accord- ing to the Ajax company involved in last weekend's bungee jumping death of a local teen. Adrenaline Rush Adventures is reacting to yesterday's announce- ment that jump companies can continue to operate. The province had been consid- ering a ban following Saturday's death of Troy Hurtibese, of Whit- by. The 19 -year-old jump master trainee had been demonstrating the safety of the sport at a rock concert near Peterborough when he fell to the ground. A graduate of Archbishop Denis O'Connor Catholic School in Ajax, Mr. Hurtibese failed to correctly attach his bungee cord to a cage suspended from a crane, according to Adrenaline. The mistake was overlooked in a standard safety double-check by a fellow worker, said the compa- ny spokesperson. Although the company doubts the mistake would have occurred if the jumper had been a con- sumer instead of an employee — because he would have undergone threw; checks instead of two — the ministry of consumer and com- mercial relations is advising the public that bungee jumping is not presently regulated by govern- ment. "It is a dangerous activity where individual safety cannot be guaranteed," a press release says. All jump operators must now ,post a cautionary notice at jump- ing locations and must draw it to the attention of potential cus- tomers. The ministry will also set up a task force to deal with public safe- ty concerns. It will be made up of representatives from the consumer ministry's technical standards divi- sion, the ministry of labor, and the industry. (The labor ministry regulates worker safety in the area of bungee jumping, but its mandate does not include public safety.) NO COUPON REOUIRED The task force will examine current industry practices, related legislation and regulations, prac- tices in other jurisdictions, and the industry's safety record. It may suggest industry self- regulation, voluntary guidelines, government regulation or a ban on the activity. Sunday's spill of radioactive water from the Pickering nuclear plant into Lake Ontario must be cause for concern. We have the same concerns as an Ajax woman. Sherrill Willard of Save The Ajax Waterfront Committee says the leak underscores the danger of building a new Ajax water plant near the nuclear station. She urged Pickering council Tuesday to "ask questioru" of the province and the region about the biggest spill in the nuclear plant's history. She claims there have been 10 additional cases of Down Syndrome babies in the area since an Atomic Energy Control Board study was released in Octo- ber 1991. That study found Down Syndrome birth rates in Pickering are high- er than the provincial average, but couldn't prove a link between the birth defect and tritium, a radioactive byproduct of CANDU reactor. "What if we find out the water is tied to birth defects"" asks leis. Willard. And, we have the same worry of Durham Nuclear Awareness, a group that advocates shutting down nuclear plants. "We're concerned about the amount of tritium the nuclear plant is allowed to release," says spokesman Irene Kock- Ontario ockOntario Hydro tells us Sunday's spill represents three per cent of the plant's monthly tritium release limit. In other words, the utility's implying, if the plant spewed the same amount of radioactive water into the lake 30 days of every month, the spills would only represent 90 per cent of dic tritium release limit. Says Ms. Kock: "We're very concemed the guidelines are much too high." Those limits are set by the Atomic Energy Control Board, acting on the advice of the Vienna -based International Atomic Energy Agency, made up of scientists from around the globe. Thee come up with the guidelines based on "the world level of knowledge on radiation" But, how expert can that knowledge be? How can anyone really know the danger posed by a spill from a nuclear plant when nuclear power has only been with us such a short time'' When people began smoking tobacco, no one knew then the terrible toll the practice would exact. Despite the assurances from Hydro that we get after each and every nucle- ar plant accident, no one can really know the danger they fxlu. It could be another generation or another centun before we know. Playing in the `B' division against other club teams, the Wanderers defeated Brockport, New York, near Buffalo, in the division final 25-9 last Sunday. Incidentally, the Brockport team had won this division for the past three years. Roger Robinson had a try, while Harvey Kramer — a guest player from Ottawa — scored two trys. Stewart Dobbs kicked a penalty and three conversions. The Ajax Wanderers advanced to the finals with a 25- 20 semi-final victory over the St. Lambert Locks from Quebec last Sunday. The Quebec squad is currently leading in the provin- cial standings. The Wanderers won all three of their preliminary games last Saturday. Ajax defeated Mad River, New York 28-7, Beacons- field, Quebec 17-9 and the Beach Boys, the Brockport, New York seconds team, 20-9. Four thousand people are expected to attend the festival, which will he the culmination of eight months of planning by town staff and numerous cornmunity volunteers. More than 200 members, includ- ing most of the surviving past pres- idents of the branch, arc expected to attend the event. The Legion is also marking the anniversary with week-long celebrations from Aug. 9 to 15. They include a church parade and outdoor service adjacent to the swimming pool at the munic- ipal buildings on Sunday, Aug. 9 at 1 p.m., followed by entertainment at the branch on Hunt St. at 3 p.m. The following day a barbecue will be held at a nominal fee. There will also be a sports tournament at the branch, including snooker, darts • and horseshoes. • J • A reunion is planned for Tues- day where ex -members of the club can meet and renew old friendships and on the Thursday, a past presi- dents' reunion night will be held. The week's activities will wind up on Friday with a Monte Carlo night and a sports day on Saturday where free corn on the cob will be served followed by a pot luck sup- per and a '-10s dance in the evening. All wants, with the exception of the dinner. are open to the public. There are no surviving members from 50 )cars ago, but the branch has two members, Tom Veitch of Woodhouse Cres. and Ren Severs of Brock St. Pickering Village, who joined the branch 47 � cars ago. Veitch, who came with his father to live in the town in 1942 when it did not even have a name --- it was part of the then Township )f Pickering — recalls that there acre no houses south of Hw,. -10i. There wasn't even a Hwy. 401 and the acreage south of the freewa, was one vast munitions plant, ringed with barbed wire. Severs, a retired Ajax firefighter, who camc to work in the town when he was discharged from the armed forces in 1945, said there were only 597 permanent homes, north of Hwy. 401. He worked initially for the War Assets Corporation, became a vol- unteer firefighter in 1952 and later joined the permanent staff before retiring 11 years ago. In 1952 there were only four full-time firefighters, plus a chief and 20 volunteers on the fire depart- ment, he said. The founding members of the Legion first met in the Carter Hall building, close to where the town's C ourtice outdoor swimming pool is now located. Later they moved to a large recreational building in Cedar Park and then to a building on Harwood Ave. where the Pennyworth's department store now stands. This burned down and the Legion decided to build on its pre- sent site, Hunt St. Here again anoth- Flea Market a AUC er fire destroyed the building in 1971, but the Legion, undaunted, rebuilt and in 1977 enlarged with a S250,(XH) addition. Short of the roof caving in, there's nothing more daunting than the prospect of having to repair that irritating leak. But before you start thinking that weeping system' is aptly rramed, considering the mood you're in. rive yourself some peace of mind and call the professionals: Drycon Building Services. Drycon specializes in basement waterproofing. While many people continually assume this is a complicated and expensive job, owner Larry Goodwin points out that isn't necessarily so. In many cases, the problem is pinpointed to a specific area, and can be fixed without spending additional time or money. Cracks in the foundation are a major cause of leaks, but if they're caught early enough, the damage can very often be reversed. Larry fills the cracks with a specialized hydraulic cement that repels the water and leads it down and out of the house. Newer houses are just as susceptible to cracks, due to the settling of the building, but unfortunately the warranty on new homes only covers the basement for the first two years. That's where Larry comes in, repairing the small problems before they become big ones. In some cases, though - especially in older homes - more extensive work needs to be done. Occasionally the weeping system, the system of tiles and gravel that prevents water from seeping in, has to be redug. This generally involves a strip being dug around the outside perimeter of the house, though• at with cracks, sometimes only isolated sections need repair. Once the trench is dug and the weeping tiles are replaced, a three- part waterproofing sealant and mesh membraw are applied to the concrete walls. Without this membrane, the sealant would split and crack with the settling of the house. This combination makes the foundation completely impermeable. In cases where it's difficult or impossible to dig outside the house, a similar set-up can be installed indoors. A trench can be dug around the interior perimeter of the house, and filled with weeping tiles and gravel in the same manner as the outside system. New concrete is poured over the trench to refinish the basement. Whatever the situation, Larry ensures complete waterproofing, and extends his warranties on this kind of work for up to 10 years. Drycon's other area of specialty is concrete refinishing. Instead of replacing chipped and broken concrete, you can simply have it refinished. Drycon uses a special concrete coating to level out uneven patches. After cleaning off dirt and residue, a thin skirn layer of this concrete is applied to restore the original look of the object. Cracks around swimming pools can he filled, as can chips and pits in concrete stairs. Even broken, crumbling concrete can be repaired by this process, While Drycon does pour its own, the main focus of this business is in the refinishing of existing material.
