PICKERING - The preliminary trial for the man charged in the probable slaying of Julie Anne Stanton is under way. Peter John Stark. who has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree mur- der, was to appear in a Whitby court yesterday morning. The 46 -year-old Stoney Creek resident was charged with Julie's murder in mid-February, nearly two years after the Dunbanon High School student went missing. Julie was 1.1 when she was last seen Easter Monday, April 16, 1990. near her home on Maury Cres. in Pickering. But Durham Nuclear Awareness, a group that advocates shutting down nuclear plants, says allow- able tritium levels are much too high. "We're concerned about the amount of tritium the nuclear plant is allowed to release," says spokesman Irene Kock. "We're very concerned the guidelines are much too high." She says the anti-nuclear group ultimately wants to see zero discharge of tri- tium. Testing after the spill showed tritium levels were in the normal range, well below hazard levels, con- firms F. B. Ali of Emergen- cy Planning Ontario, an agency of the Solicitor Gen- eral's office. Nevertheless, Ontario Hydro will continue to test water samples every two hours for the next few days as a precaution, says Mr. Muir. "I don't think there's any reason for concern. The water is safe to drink." Ontario Hydro will work to reduce tritium levels inside nuclear reactors to lessen the impact of any future spills, he adds. A rifle, machete and butcher knife were seized. When police responded to the Clements Rd. home around 8:50 a.m., they were confronted by a man with a butcher knife "and there was some indication there was a gun," says Durham Regional Police staff sergeant Sandy Ryrie. The tactical unit was called out and a negotiator talked with the man for about three hours. "As a last resort we fired tear gas and the man came out,- says Sgt. Ryrie. A 53 -year-old man was taken to hospital for assess- ment. The company "ceased operating voluntarily" immediately after Sat- urday's accident even before the labor ministry stepped in to stop operations, says Mr. McWilliams. This is the third time Adrenaline has been ordered to shut down in the past month. It received its first stop -work order at Toronto's CHIN International Pic- nic, July I to 5, the second at the Kitchener Fair just days later. The orders fell under the min- istry's industrial guidelines gov- erning safe and proper use of cranes. This weekend's shutdown will be followed by a joint investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police and the labor ministry, which will examine such things as operating procedures and equipment certifi- cation. The ministry will also look at the 20 guidelines it released for the safe operation of cranes used in mobile bungee -jumping outfits. Though Mr. McWilliams criti- cizes the standards for not address- ing bungee cords, harness, proce- dures or any of the bungee gear, a ministry spokesman says their intent is to protect the worker, not the consumer. "Our only concern is for the safety of workers, not the public," • 1 VI► it = says Bob McLelland. "Workers don't bungee -jump unless it's on their own time. Part of their job is not bungee jumping." If investigators decide the com- pany is not at fault in the accident, stop -work orders will be lifted, says Mr. McLelland. It could decide, however, to issue further orders. If the company is found to have made a "major violation" of the Health and Safety Act, it could face a fine of up to S500,000 and its owner/director could be fined up to $25,000. Mr. Hurtibese left his job at Cullen Gardens and Miniature Vil- lage in Whitby to work with Adrenaline. "It (bungee jumping) was something he wanted to do," says manager Mary Mosey. "He was given the opportunity so he went. He was coming back to us in September." She describes Troy as "very popular with other staff and espe- cial ly popular with our guests." His uncle, David Hurtibese, said due to the "amount of publici- ty that has been generated from the accident, the family is asking to be given privacy at this time." Mr. Hurtibese, an Innisclaire Place resident, graduated from Archbishop Denis O'Connor High School in Ajax and also attended Anderson Collegiate and Voca- tional Institute in Whitby. Everyone's fear about the new craze of bungee jumping -- "What if something goes wrong?" -- has hit home. On Saturday, 19 -year-old Troy Hurtibese of Whitby plunged to his death while bungee jumping at a concert near Peterborough. Ironical- ly, the employee of Adrenaline Rush Adventures of Ajax was jumping to demonstrate the safety of the sport. He had previously done more than 150 jumps. Early investigation has shown that the tragic accident was the result of human error, and not equipment failure. But what about next time? There are currently no safety regulations on the sport, except for recently -released guidelines on the safe operations of cranes used in mobile bungee jumping outfits. These were released following the bungee jumping death of a Michigan man in July. This has many people concerned, including Justin McWilliams, vice-president of Adrenaline Rush Adventures. There are currently no standards addressing the bungee cords, harness, procedures, or any of the bungee gear. While Saturday's tragic accident may have been the result of human error, how long will it be before we hear of a bungee cord breaking or failing to work properly? There have to be safety stan- dards set for all of this equipment. Regular checks of all equipment are also a must. Getting these standards in place soon could save someone's life. Smell the flowers, but don'tpick them To the editor, Anyone walking or driving along Lakeview Blvd. in the Pickering Beach area could not help notice the lovely wild flowers growing near the tennis court in the park area. I saw the golden flowers recently. It has been brought to my attention that a mother very thoughtless- ly sent her little bov to pull out these flowers by the roots to plant in her garden. These flowers did not grow here by chance, but by the hard work of people in the area who wanted it to look nice. I hope this person thinks twice before she uproots other "wild" flowers. The title brings to mind one of those mindless, shallow B -grade !licks that pop up on video -store shelves at regular intervals and that fill in between better-known titles on pay-TV. Buffy, The Vampire Slayer is neither of those. This movie is a funny, campy look at a tried-and- true cinema topic — vampire lore. It has some strong acting perfor- mances by respected thespians. It features an amusing and sometimes outrageously funny script by Joss Whedon. Most importantly, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer is great fun. Buffy is just what you'd expect a valley girl to be. She is the captain of the cheerleading squad, she's popular and she loves shopping. Pretty believable stuff so far. . But, when the high school halls and city streets become a roaming place for the undead, Buffy meets her true fate — no, not to get a great bargain and the coolest dress ever and find the accessories to match. Buffy learns she is next in a long line of girls chosen as vampire slay- ers. To help her fulfil her destiny, a wise man named Merrick will train her and transform her from valley girl to vampire killer. I sense I'm beginning to lose a few of you. Buffy, the Vampire Slayer is ripe for the vide scrap heap, but writer Whedon delivers a witty script that Pokes fun at the southern California lifestyle and the vampire movies of late-night TV, while director Fran Rubel Kuzui blends in some finely choreographed martial arts action. Relatively -unknown Kristy Swanson plays Buffy to Luke Perry's (of Beverly Hills 90210 fame) Pike. This is the central cou- ple and the love interest of the flick. But the real meat of Buffy comes from established actors like Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer and Paul Reubens. Hauer, as the evil bloodsucker Lothos, has a few scenes and is solid in them. Sutherland is impressive as Merrick, the slayer trainer. He is charming and debonair and adds a touch of class to the flick. Most worthy of mention is Reubens, how- ever. The actor effectively takes anoth- er step toward shedding his dull and weary Peewee Herman persona with Off The Record... The Rankin Family - Fare Thee Well (Capitol): They say that Mantimers can be more Irish than the Irish. A case in point is the Cape Breton Rankins, five siblings (three females, two males) who can kick up a Celtic fuss to rival any Paddy band. These rising stars mostly arrange traditional songs, which, aside from the odd country or folk foray, embrace their Cape Bre- [on/Irish roots. The result is a cross between Rita MacNeil and the Irish Rovers. Fare Thee Well Love was actually released two years ago but it clearly deserves a second look. Mary -Chapin Carpenter - Come On Come On (Columbia): In her opening track Carpenter sings: "Show a little inspiration, show a little spark..." And that she does. Carpenter is one of the hot, young sirens on 'the country scene, proving equal- ly as adept at high-steppin' as the Slow turns. Better still she eschews most of the cliches that often riddle country music, offer- ing up instead a clear, fresh approach built around simple arrangements and her striking voice. Nat King Cole - The Unfor- gettable Nat King Cole (EMI): Storytime session set for Aug. - 8 -.AJAX - A Storytime ses- sion is being held at the main branch of the town's public library and children are invit- ed. The session is set for Satur- day, Aug. 8, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and will include stories, music and frngerpiays. The theme is the farm. It's free and suitable for children from pre-school to six years of age. Parents should attend with their children. All these people driving by themselves when they could be tak- ing a neighbor or a friend. I won- dered what would happen if people started driving others to work with them every morning" And it all just began to evolve out of that." ALlGMS !!!3 Dalefflock dates badk'to the' 1850s PICKERING VILLAGE - The building at 80, 82 and 84 Old Kingston Rd. in the Village of Pickering was originally a hotel known as Head's Hotel. Records indicate that Head's Hotel, owned and operated by Peter Head, was in existence in 1850. Peter Head operated the hotel into the 1880s and was then succeeded by innkeepers Andrew Mason, Thomas Major and D. O'Conner. In approximately 187.3, the hotel was purchased by Edmund Wright, who remodelled the hotel and transformed it into a store and residence, the residence being the unique octagon -shaped portion on the east side. Being a two-storey building measuring 60 feet by 70 feet, the Dale Block was the largest com- mercial building in the Village. This was a very impressive build- ing by comparison to most other buildings on the street, which were not nearly as detailed. While most of the ornamental detail along the: parapet has no" been removed, the octagon portion of the building still shows the fine brick detail and the original deco- rative wood trim remains on the porch. During the early years, many businesses were located in the Dale Block. %lost of these busi- nesses were either hardware stores, such as Reazin's Hardware or Dale's Hardware or dry -goods stores, one store being in the east side of the building the other in the west. However, two bakers, a physi- cian, and a tailor (Nels Margach) Tan their businesses from the Dale Block. The Dale Block at one time was also home to the News Office. The second floor was used as a hall and could seat 250 peo- ple. The hall was the meeting place for the local Independent Order of Oddfellows. Why the property became known as the Dale Block is not known. However, it is known that Christopher Dale operated a hard- ware store in the Dale Block from about 1881 to 1889. at which time he moved his family to Toronto. Christopher did eventually pur- chase the cast half of the property in 1890. Shortly after his death in May, 1909 at age 69, his wife Eliza returned to Pickering Village to live with one of their daughters. The property remained in the family being past on to the chil- dren until 1916. Christopher Dale, the son of Richard Dale and Jane Dale (Valentine), was born and spent the early years of his life in Pick- ering. Richard Dale, formerly of Yorkshire, England, and Jane Dale (Valentine), formerly of Belfast, Ireland, settled in the Pickering area in the earl 1820s. These hidden problems may be revealed in dental x-rays. In some cases, it may be impossible for the dentist to render proper care and make correct decisions without them. Some of the conditions diagnosed with x-rays include: decay between teeth or under fillings and crowns, diseases of the gums (periodontal disease), impacted teeth, extra teeth, missing permanent teeth, abscesses, cysts, and tumours. Are x-rays safe? X-radiation has the potential to be hazardous and should not be taken lightly. The degree of risk depends largely on the amount of radiation received and in a dental office, the use of modern x-ray equipment and very sensitive film minimize the amount of exposure necessary. While any amount of radiation exposure involves some small risk, dental x-rays are not likely to cause damage and if a sound reason exists for taking an x-ray, the benefits far outweigh any risk. The location of the study area is outlined below. On December 17,1990, Town Council considered Planning Report No. 16190 which contained the Town staff's recommendations for the Phase. I component of the Altona Forest Area Environmental Management Study. Town Council referred the Altona Forest Environmental Management Study to the Minister of the Environment for comment. At the same time, a group called The Friends of the Altona Forest and Petticoat Creek requested the Ministry of the Environment to have the proposal considered under the provisions of the Environmental Assessment Act. A response from the Minister of the Environment is pending. Nevertheless, Town Council has requested that Planning Report No. 16/90, and other relevant information, be presented to the public and to Council for their consideration. To this end, on Monday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers of the Pickering Civic Complex, at One The Esplanade, a Statutory Public Meeting will be held, pursuant to section 17 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. c.p. 13, to. consider the proposed official plan amendment for the Altona Forest Area.
