Kris Holdenried, 18, of
Claremont, won the Canadian
championship in the modern
pentathlon in the junior class in
Regina recently. The pentathlon
involves swimming, running,
riding, shooting and fencing.
Kris only started training after
Christmas and it was his first
championship competition.
While training, he managed
to keep up with his grades at
Pickering High School to gradu-

women are coordinating a North
York man's swim across Lake
Ontario in aid of the Special
Olympics.
John Scott, 31, is scheduled to
attempt the swim Friday, Aug. 7,
starting at Niagara -On -The -Lake
and finishing in Toronto. Last
year, he raised $10,000 for the
Children's Wish Foundation by
attempting the swim despite being
pulled from the water because of
poor weather.
Pickering residents Judy
Shanks and Claire Campbell are
coordinating the swim and will
provide updates on timing and
progress. Zippy Print in Pickering
helped by printing newsletters
about the event.
Money raised will help outfit
the Canadian Special Olympics
Team going to the Special
Olympics International Winter
Games in Austria in March. The
Special Olympics provides sup-
port, training and competition for
mentally -handicapped athletes.
"For most of these athletes, it
will be the first and only trip
abroad for them," says Mr. Scott.

Rock -throwing teen faces charges
AJAX - A 13 -year-old boy faces charges after
throwing rocks at cars on Hwy. 401.
Durham Regional Police say the youngster, who
cannot be named under the Young Offenders' Act,
was caught throwing rocks off the Westney Rd.

youths and held them until police arrived. The one
boy who admitted to throwing the rocks will be
charged with public mischief, police say.
Two southbound vehicles each suffered about
$400 in damages. One was struck on the roof and
the other on the hood.
"I don't know what kids are thinking of when
they do something like that," says Detective Henry
Otter of the Young Offenders' Bureau.
"When something unexpected happens to a driv-
er, it scares the living daylights out of them, espe-
cially if their windshield was smashed. They could
panic and swerve into oncoming traffic or pound on
the brakes and be rear-ended. Someone could even
die. There are all kinds of possibilities."

Funds in budget for Frenchman's Bay purchase: IIi1TRCA

money in its budget to save French-
man's Bay property from develop-
ment.
All that's needed is provincial
approval to purchase the 20 acres
on the east side of the bay, says the
MTRCA. The land is owned by
Sandbury Homes, which has pro-
posed the property be developed
for townhomes.
The town of Pickering has
pledged $500,000 toward the prop-
erty's $1 -million price tag.
The MTRCA has now formally
requested approval from the min-
istry of natural resources to proceed
with the purchase. In a letter, the
authority points out that it can
cover the expense through funding
already provided by the ministry.

AJAX - The suspected getaway vehicle in Thurs-
day's armed robbery of a credit union here was
found not far from the scene of the crime later that
same night.

stolen in Scarborough last weekend.
It's believed the van was used in the robbery of
the Autoworkers (Ajax) Credit Union on Hunt St.
around 8:30 a.m. Three masked men, two carrying
guns, made off with several thousand dollars and an
employee's purse, which contained some money
and credit cards.
The employee, who was alone when the robbery
occurred, was bound at gunpoint but was unharmed.
Police are looking for three men.
The first suspect is about 6'4", has a thin build
and is believed to be in his mid- to late -20s. He was
wearing a black balaclava, dark clothing and dark
gloves. He had no accent and was carrying a glut.
The second suspect is about 5'5", and was wear-
ing a balaclava and a light shirt.
. The third suspect is also about 5'5", was wearing
a balaclava and dark clothing.
Anyone with information is asked to call police
at 683-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 436-8477.

cer Bill McLean to the ministry.
To local MPP Jim Wiseman,
Mr. McLean writes, "The provin-
cial funding in the amount of
$500,000 is at hand within the
existing cash flow ... this project will
have no additional financial impact
on the province of Ontario."
The ministry has been urged to
reply before Oct. 30, a deadline set
in an agreement of purchase and
sale.
Pickering councillor Kip Van
Kempen, the town's representative
on the MTRCA, says he's delight-
ed the request has been forwarded
to the ministry. "I'm excited about
the prospects of receiving a posi-
tive response from the province,"
he says. "It's imperative we receive
an answer by October to complete
the deal."

Aron Mu,cutt and Scott Harp-
er "ill both participate in
FuturTech, a one-week exhibi-
tion which will introduce 2SO
students from across the country
to the world of high tech.
The show, sponsored by
Canada 125, the Canadian Coun-
cil of Christians and Jews, and
Junior Achievement of Southern
Alberta, will be held in mid-
August.
The pair was excited about
being accepted to the program,
which was open to all full-time
secondary students aged 15 to
17. Participants, who must be
Canadian citizens, were chosen
on the basis of their level of
interest in the program, as indi-
cated on their application form.
"I told them I'd love to see
world peace. more jobs available
and a clean environment," says
Scott, 17.
For Aron, also 17, "making
Toronto less of a concrete jun-
gle" is a top concern, as are the
environment and higher employ-
ment.

one-on-one with course tapes and
manuals.
But the delivery of course
material, held up by a supplier
with a strike, and no replacements
to stay open with, is a threat.
"We order course material
daily," he says. "A program for a
diploma could have 20 manuals,
and we have to obtain those mate -
rials on a timely basis, so the stu-
dent can progress."
Interruptions could cost stu-
dents valuable lost wages while
waiting for credits in job promo-
tion or new employment.
Ralph Bradley, president of
the Ajax -Pickering Board of
Trade, thinks the bill proposes
some necessary changes, but like
Mr. Emmink, that the timing is
wrong.

What's in a nn me? History, perhaps
To the editor,
The following is a copy of a
letter to Durham Board of Educa-
tion Ajax trustee Duncan Read.
Dear 'sir. Read,
We are very pleased that our
two children will be attending the
new school being built in Picker-
ing Village on Church St. north of
Hwv. 2. From what we can see so
far, the building shows vision and
' attention to detail and will be a
credit to the Durham board.
However I am greatly dis-
turbed by the choice of name for
the school and I can only hope it
isn't too late to reconsider. While
Lincoln Alexander P.S. is a noble
choice for any school, using it for
this school ignores the fact that a
well-established school known as
Lincoln Avenue P.S. is less than a
kilometre away. This shows there
was little thought regarding mix-
ups in mail delivery alone.
With a little research you'd
know the school is by the new
park known as Hermitage Park.
"The Hermitage" was the gymna-
sium of the old Quaker College
located at the top of the hill until
it was destroyed by fire. This was
a fine example of local history.
While Lincoln Alexander is well
known in the "global village", we
are interested in trying to preserve
what little history we have in
:Pickering Village.
You would know that there is a
.Heritage Highway Plaque only,
two blocks away that tells about
the founding of Pickering, later to
be known as Pickering Village.
The founder was Timothy Rogers
more than 100 years ago which is
twice as long as Ajax has been
around.
Were you aware that, until
about 25 years ago, there already
was a public school only two
doors down from the new build-
ing? "Public School No. 26" may

went there.
1 understand that people in the
area were polled regarding the
naming of the new school. 1 am a
long-time resident and was not
polled so I must assume it was
done via students at Lincoln Ave.
P.S. who are awaiting the opening
of the new school. You must
understand that these people are
new, to the area and know little of
the local history, in fact some are
not even aware of the location of
the new school and so do not real-
ize the close proximity of Lincoln
Avenue P.S.
Therefore, I feel that Timothy
Rogers P.S. or Hermitage Park
P.S. are much more suitable
choices, my personal preference
being Hermitage Park P.S. This
certainly avoids contusion with
Lincoln Ave. P.S. This name
reflects the immediate location as
well as paying homage to local
history. As a teacher, I feel the
educational value in learning local
history behind the name of the
school you're in makes it worth
reconsidering the name of the new,
school.
I understand the board has a
list of names which reflect certain
standards and which pay homage
to important Canadians from
which board members try to make
choices for school names. I just
feel that in this case I can't
emphasize enough my feelings of
frustration and disappointment i,
their choice of a name so incredi�
bly similar to an already existing,
extremely close wh(x)l. In an area
where many of our historical land-
marks are being bought up and
moved to Cullen Gardens, it
would be nice to use the naming
of this new school in Pickering
Village to reflect the local history
when you actually have some
local history.
I know I am not alone in my
feelings in this matter and I hope
you will give my suggestions
some serious consideration.

health-care abusers
To the editor,
OHIP is the best institution we have in this coun-
try. But, if it's going to bankrupt us, let's not see if
it can't be made a little more efficient.
How about a modest user fee? I'm suggesting a
$10 -a -visit charge to see a doctor with those truly
needy people being exempt.

Whitby soccer tournament
PICKERING - The Pickering Binns under -14 tier I soccer team wa
victorious at a Whitby Soccer Tournament last weekend.
Playing Whitby in the final, Pickering Binns put forth a fine defensiv
game to post a 4-2 victory to claim the championship.
Pickering Binns advanced to the championship after blanking Eas
York 4-0 in the semi-final game.
Pickering claimed a 4-2 victory over Burlington in its opening game o
the tournament. Next, Pickering bombed Port Hope 8-0 in the seconl
game. Playing Whitby for the division title and the right to move into tht
playoff round, Pickering responded with a 7-1 victory in a well -player
contest.
Meanwhile, the Pickering Strikers under -eight tier I team played wel
in its 12 -team division which featured quality competition.
Pickering defeated the York Jets 3-2 in the first game on goals b)
Keith Rhodes, Nicholas Vicira and Jerome Mills with great goalkd in€
by Ryan Kane.
Against Cobourg, the Pickering under -eights won 4-0 on two goals by
Vicira, and Sammy Holt and Frank Jonke with one apiece.
Pickering lost its third game to Missisauga and dropped a chance to
move on to the final. Mills scored for Pickering on a free kick.
Team members are Ryan Kane, Frank Jonke, Matt Kcber, John Cas-
iidy, Sammy Holt, Nicholas Vicira, Jerome Mills, Ainsley Eyitene,
Andrew Kallicragas, Paul Ruta, Paul Cuzzolino and Keith Rhodes.
Other Pickering squads at the tourney also fared well. The Pickering
under -10s won two games and lost one, while the under -12 squad posted a
win, a loss and a tic. Meanwhile, the Pickering under -16 boys' team lost
all three of its games.

Rs, but also the two Cs - calculators
and computers - before they
graduate from high school.
That's why the Professional
Standards for Teaching
Mathematics, developed by the
National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics (NCTM) encourages
use of modern technology in the
classroom.
Used effectively, calculators and
computers are tools to enhance
discourse, not machines to replace
children's thinking. Technology, of
course, is not enough; the key is
how teachers use it.
Consider the words of one
mathematics teacher: "I wanted my
students to learn that the sum of the
angle measured in a triangle is 180
degrees, so I had them construct a
lot of triangles on the computer and
record the angle measures.
' The software made it possible to
collect a lot of data quickly and
make a generalization. I thought my
students would remember the
relationship better if they
discovered it themselves."

The Professional Standards urge
the widespread classroom use of
computers and calculators as a way
to free time for more important
work.
Previously, young people spent 80
percent of their time doing simple
computation, learning to multiply
and divide progressively larger
numbers. In the process, the
students often lost sight of
mathematical discoveries because
they became mired in the process of
producing the results.
Calculators and computers not
only save time, but also give
students access to new ways of
exploring concepts.
The evidence is unmistakable,
according to NCTM. Students have
an unprecedented need to master
calculators and computers if they
expect to succeed in all walks of

TOOL ROOM SUPERVISOR
This candidate shall have several years experience
preferable in automotive stampings and be able to
analyze problems and trouble shooting. Reporting to the
General Foreman, this position will afford a challenge to a
results oriented individual.
TOOL ENGINEER
You will be responsible for projects from quotation to tool
build, sample submission, process flow, and production
start up. You have extensive experience in heavy metal
stamping as a tool and die maker, preferably with a
supervisory background in the automotive industry.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERYrTECHNOLOGIST
Your responsibilities wid include completion of various
pant engineering projects and preventative maintenance
of electronic and electrical controls. You will have an
appropriate electrical degree/diploma with mechanical
options. In addition, you will have 1-2 years experience in
programmable control systems, robotic controls and
reading drafting electronic/electrical schematic diagrams.
PRESS SHOP GENERAL FOREPERSON
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years
supervisory experience in heavy metal stamping and
quick die change techniques. He/She should be familiar
with a 3 shift operation in a unionized environment.
Preference will be given to those individuals with a post
secondary education and a vast knowledge in the art of
quick die change.
