The man, who works at Papps Restaurant on Kingston Rd. W, was walking down the stairs, around 9:30 p.m., when he spilled a pot of hot grease, suffering bums to the side of his body. Cigarettes were the target of a smash and grab at a Pickering variety store Tuesday just before 3 a.m. A rock was used to smash the ront door of the Hasty Market at ingston Rd. and Whites Rd. Thieves, however, left empty- handed from the Becker's at 1900 Rosefield Rd. in Pickering where the glass door was smashed just before 3 a.m. A pursuit through Whitby Tuesday morning was called off, but police later arrested two peo- ple, including a Pickering woman, when a stolen pickup slammed into a light post at the four cor- ners. An officer activated his cruiser roof lights after noticing a Nissan Pathfinder driving erratically on Dundas St. around 5 a.m. After it sped off eastbound, however, the officer called off the pursuit and broadcast the licence plate. According to Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryrie of Durham Regional Police, other officers "saw it (the pickup truck) run into a light stan- dard at Brock Rd. and Dundas St." a few minutes later. Following a short foot chase, police arrested the two occupants. A 23 -year-old man is charged with possession of a stolen vehi- cle, impaired driving, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and being unlawfully at large from Milbrook Correctional Facility. A spokesman from the facility, however, told the !dews Advertis- er that the man wasn't unlawfully at large from the facility. A 22 -year-old Pickering woman is also charged with pos- session of a stolen vehicle. School to be more energy-efficient Lincoln Avenue P.S. gets facelift PICKERING VILLAGE - Lincoln Avenue Pub- lic School is getting a facelift this summer. When it opens again in September, the 36 -year- old school will be more energy efficient, according to Bob Vanwort, project design supervisor with the Durham Board of Education. An area resident had expressed concern to the News Advertiser that the brick was being removed from the Lincoln St. school because it didn't match other parts of the building. That's not the case, says Mr. Vanwort. Big, glass windows are being removed because they're rotting and leaking. They'll be replaced with small- er, aluminum windows, thereby "decreasing heat loss." At the same time, walls will be insulated. "No ;nsulation was put in the; original building," qtr. Vanwort notes. "Today's building code now, insists on insulation and we'll be meeting those require- ments." The older hrick.s aren't being reused because they're cracking, he adds. The work should he complete by mid-August. The school was built in 1956. It got its first addition in 1959, the gymnasium addition in 1969, and the library addition in 1971. Residential proposals approved FROM PAGE 1 The development is on Ross - land Rd., between the existing arwood Ave. and the proposed aligned Harwood Ave. Also on Monday, council approved a 131 -unit proposal by Dekkema Gervais Developments for an area cast of Grayson Rd. and View St. Between the Numeralcroft and Dekkema proposal is one for Run- nymede, which was approved last week and includes about 250 units. Gerard Gervais, a partner in Dekkema Gervads, told council the firm is prepared to enter into an agreement with the town to reconstruct the new Harwood Ave. Just north of Hwy. 2, Harwood will curve cast and then north. Developers owning land where the new Harwood will be located will pay to have the road built. It will cost the developers about S3 million to build the road from Hwy. 2 to Rossland Rd. The existing Harwood will be dead -ended near Hwy.'_. Mr. Gervais said the residential and industrial development in the area will proceed at the same time because the developers will have to construct Harwood. Ward 3 councillor Steve Parish, who opposed all the resi- dential proposals, said, "What we've done is put on stream a massive amount of residential without a guarantee of bringing on industrial development." Council approved the proposal by a 5-3 vote. Barbecue for Benjamin set for Aug. 8 FROM PAGE 1 adds up. Victims of vicious dogs can initiate court action, but until a case is ruled on, the dog remains in the care of its owner, perhaps to attack again. Will it take the tragedy of a maimed or dead child before the laws are tightened' JI Last summer, a Pickering woman watched in horror as her little dog was "ripped to shreds" by two dogs that neighbors reported had been ter- rorizing the community for months. That woman responsibly filed charges under the Dog Owners' Liability Act. But a week before the court handed down a decision that the negligent owner could never again own "aggressive" dogs, one of the offending ani- _ mals was shot dead by police on a residential street, after it threatened a child and charged an officer. It was not a humane death, and that in itself was a tragedy. That needn't happen if a again proposed provincial legislation is passed., The legislation will allow animal control officers to keep a vicious dog in the pound until the court case is resolved, thereby protecting the communi- ty from an animal suspected dangerous. There are just seven animal control officers to serve all of Pickering, - Ajax and Whitby. Last year, they responded to 3.801 domestic animal calls and laid about 200 charges of bylaw infractions. Some animal owners are repeat offenders and yet, even if their dogs are biting people, the maximum - fine animal control officers can levy is S50. MPP Jim Wiseman, like his predecessor Liberal NIPP Norah Stoner, probably understands the predicament now, facing him. It doesn't matter how sincere or envi- ronmentally concerned a politician is, the fact remains that the awful system is virtually unstoppable. The scan, rationale of the IVV'A with respect to site criterion Is alarming. For example, consider prime agricultural land. Its update report -Focus On Waste- June 1992_ states, "Public land and land in the urban shadow are unlikely to be used for agriculture in the future, and so are being considered for sites." Regardless of what crite- rion the 1VVA advocates it would appear proximity to 'Metro is the main one. For a "Durham only" site one would think a place in south central Durham to be most practical. The '•20 year" scenario at Brock West and the dismal failure and contamination at Brock tiorth serve as grim reminders that the system is badly flawed. The IWA states in its front page of the June update, "It is our goal to create understanding". T.R.A.C.K., the Therapeutic Riding Association for Chal- lenged Kids, provides programs of therapeutic horseback riding for mentally and physically chal- lenged children throughout Durham Region. The physical, psychological and social benefits of riding for these children has become so well accepted that there are now more than 70 orga- nizations in Canada offering sim- ilar pro - grams. The News Adver- tiser's man- j aging editor Greg Coates recently a talked to Dee Cuthbertson, founder and owner of the Greg Coates 7'. R. A. C. K. facilities in Uxbridge which services all of Durham Region. News Advertiser: When was T.R.A.C.K. established'' Cuthbertson: "T.R.A.C.K. began operation in the spring of 1987, and was granted registered charitable status in November of 1991. Parents pay a nominal amount towards instructors' fees, Iorse rental and the use of facili- ir;, with the balance of the costs being met through donations and fund raising." News Advertiser: How is the program designed? Cuthbertson: "The programs are geared towards hclpin, devrl- opmentally delayed, learning dis- abled, and physically handicapped`' children i'.x between the ages of six months and 18 years. Each child Dee Cuthbertson brings his or her own special challenges, yet each gets up on a horse and rides. The lessons are designed to best suit each individ- ual child with strong emphasis placed on creating high levels of motivation and self-esteem." News Advertiser: What arc the benefits of such a program'? Cuthbertson: "There's a large array of physical, psychological and social benefits derived from therapeutic riding. Physical bene- fits arc improved co-ordination, balance, mobility, cardiovascular function, and relaxation of spastic muscles. -Ps ychological benefits are improved seif-image, attention span, motivation, concentration, spatial awareness and a sense of self -achievement. "The social benefits allow par- ticipation in the mainstream of life, personal contact and integra- tion with nominally active people, as well as a general sense of con- fidence and well-being developed from exercise away from home or hospital." New, Ad%ertiser: How do the children react to the horses? Cuthbertson: "Some of them are apprehensive at first, but once they get out there they're fine. They're happy, it's wonderful. "It's very rewarding for them. The horses are very nonjudg- mental. They don't care what you look like. The children get a lot of self-esteem. They sit up high. They're on top of things — look- ing down on people for a change. "It's a fabulous, fabulous pro- gram. It's the highlight of every- one's week. When the children get here, they run over and hug me. They get so excited. Its won- derful." News' Advertiser: How many children take part in your pro- gram? Cuthhertson: "We currently service about 80 children, about 50 per cent of which is from the Ajax -Pickering area. M,'c also have a waiting list of about 20. but we need more volunteers." hews Advertiser: How many volunteers do you have'' Cuthbertson: "We have about 30, but that's low. I'd like to have a hundred. The more volunteers we have, the more kids we can service." News Advertiser: You've been with the T.R.A.C.K. pro- gram since 1987. What do you get out of it'' Cuthbertson: ''It's very rewarding. I've always liked chil- dren and I enjoy working with these kid;. The program allows me to incorporate the horse Sarah Birrell of Pickering enjoys a horseback ride at the T .R A.0 K facilities in Uxbridge knowledge that I have while working in a phy;ro-therapy field that I'm interested in. I cant say enough about the program. "The children are out on a farm and being treated as real people. They're working with real live animals, not ,tuck in a room with fluorescent lights. It's absolutely wonderful. We have one child who is totally non-ver- bal, but when she gets up on the horse she sings. It's things like that that make it absolutely per- fec t. •' `ews Advertiser: Do you offer an% (,ther pro ram; other than those already mentioned:' Cuthbertson: "Yes. We also offer summer day camps which are very popular. We started these with about six kids and are now up to 30. --The kid; ride in the mornings and then do crafts, watch movies. etc. in the afternoons. It's a lot of fun. "It's also good for the parents. It offers them a real outlet- It gets the kids out of the house and pro- vides a wonderful break," For more information on the T.R.1.('.K. prir(ram, call 1-416) tis_ -r,=') 1. ..- ...r .. d...:. It's storytelling and some of the best storytellers this country has to offer are part of a Wednesday night series at the pub. "A lot of people think it's an actor or author reading and it's neither," says Lorne Brown. "Telling stories is probably the oldest form of entertainment in existence." Mr. Brown will perform tonight, July 29, along with Alec Gelcer. For most adults, storytelling is ;omething usually reserved for small children. "Most adults probably haven't had a story told to them since they were children. An adult telling an adult a story is a very powerful experience," he says. Storytelling is a demanding acuvity for the listener. "You just can't sit there. It's not like TV where you get up and leave and stay with it. You have to stay with it. If you don't, you'd be lost," Mr. Brown says. "It's like the old days of radio when you created the characters.
