"No matter what product you're selling, you're only selling two things — solutions to problems and good customer feeling," advised Derrick Pick of Delaine Consulting, who spoke at the board's monthly luncheon on the topic of "Getting Ahead in the New Economy." Mr. Pick said companies make three basic mistakes — thinking cur- rent trends will continue, thinking yesterday's solutions will solve today's problems and neglecting the opportunity for future change. He advised businesses to approach change with an open mind, evaluate ideas and be "innovative" in management. "Listen to your customers and their needs. It makes people feel good when we listen and it puts us ahead of the pack." Listening to customers enables companies to provide better solu- tions and therefore increases busi- ness, he pointed out. He advised companies to "make it easy for the customer to complain" and to respond promptly when something goes wrong. Mr. Pick suggested businesses "scrap" company policies and re - mers key to business success write them as "customer policies. "You're only in business to get, and keep, customers," he said. "The better your relationship with cus- tomers, the more product you're going to sell." Getting the "fundamentals" of business light will ensure results, he added. Those fundamentals include spending more on employee train- ing, paying attention to quality con- trol and involving employees in company changes by asking for their opinions and ideas. Mr. Pick said the one thing in a company's control is "the moment of truth" with a customer — the first contact with the customer, the first sale and the fust time there's a prob- lem. Salespeople who don't take care of customers "will be left in the cold" and reflect poor training, Mr. Pick added. "You can only afford to treat customers with disdain when you're the only game in town...Make sure your salespeople project the image you want of your company. They are the window to the company." Salespeople should be "polite, sincere and interested" and should exceed customers' expectations, he said. "Getting ahead in the new econo- my is not so different than getting ahead in the old economy," Mr, Pick Region HQ vote months away DURHAM - It'll be another few months before a decision is made on the regional administrative centre proposed for downtown Oshawa. Councillors agreed Wednesday to have an independent consultant look at the Hilstone project, which would see a S37 -million, nine-storcv regional administrative centre go up alongside a private office tower. The project was narrowly defeated once, failing to clear a preliminary hurdle on the issue of parking and site location. Those items must be approved before the issues of financing and building design are even put on the table. But Oshawa mayor Nancy Diamond is armed with a "better package" which calls for additional parking at the side of the proposed building, answering concerns that some people could not or would not use under- ground parking. The revised plan also increases green space around the building because some councillors felt the centre looked " patkcd in on the lot." f -Celebrating 12 Years :gin the DurhamRegion 4CANAAN:1, I atroa..bwtweas BUY 1 BUFFET DINNER I (at n& Prim) & RECEIVE 2nd BUFFET FANNER for 99 _ I i - fl 7 days a weeL Iiiempon per vrbm ordering. 'They include: • A new management approach that would allow the hospital board, staff, managers and employees to get involved in decision-making and foster team- work; • Adding new positions on staff; • Improving the areas of: committees, planning and budgeting, human resources, materials manage- ment, patient management systems, equipment man- agement, and accounting; • Re -structuring individual departments, particu- larly the nursing department. The consultant notes the hospital has "strengths" that will help smooth the transitions, including "a committed and supportive board: a new CEO with a participatory style; an atmosphere of 'family' and cooperation; and staff who are looking forward to change." Pickering Beach residents mixed on sewers FROM PAGE I dent Shane Wasmund, who spearheaded the movement for sewers, was pleased with the "afford- able compromise," saying storm sewers would have at least tripled" the cost to be borne by residents. He's confident the decision not to install storm sewers won't have 111 -effects on the commu- nity because residents will be following regional guidelines when hooking up to sanitary sewers, Opponent Janis Mitchell asked councillors to "protect the rights of the minority and turn down this risky develop- ment scheme." Ajax councillor Susan Dulny urged colleagues to support the project, call- ing septic tanks a "short- term solution" which aren't environmentally - friendly and "should be pumped out more often than they are." It will take four years to complete the project, with construction to begin this fall. The first of four phases will see sewers installed on Seabreeze Ave. and Poplar Ave. between Seabreeze and Beachview Ave. The first phase will cost the region about $475,000. The town will spend $190,000 bringing roads, with ditches, up to rural standards during the firs! phase. Curbs, gutters and sidewalks won't be installed. The lack of sewers in the Pickering Beach area resulted in a building freeze there for almost two decades. The hospital has already acted on some of the rec- ommendations, says Mrs. Paterson. "It's good news," she says of the report. "We're very pleased. We par- ticipated through the whole thing. There aren't any surprises to anybody — everybody participated." Staff were interviewed and invited to make sug- gestions during the consultant's review, she says. "A lot of ideas (in the report) came from within; they're recommendations we're happy to do. Change is still difficult but the exciting part is we're moving ahead." Because there are costs associated with the recov- ery plan — such as the need for new staff positions and computers — the hospital is waiting to hear if the ministry of health can offer financial help, says Mrs. Paterson. The consultant's review lets the ministry know why budget problems exist and whether it's under- funding the hospital, she adds. While other hospitals are closing beds, "We're still doing great. We're not closing one bed; we're opening at least 20 more." A Lsting impressions with Fashion Fair iaae care of your skin and for a limited time get a bonus! That coincidence may be a positive omen for things to conic out of the new training centre. Of course the quality of the new jobs is much different -- they will be supported entirely by taxpayers; the wages of the old ones came from private industry. It's a similar case for the building. Yes, it's good to have it occupied and in productive use, but before it closed it was occupied by a taxpay- ing industry that helped to support area services. Durham College will pay no taxes, and the $20 million it will cost the province to create the new training centre will come directly from taxes. The situation is not as good as it was when Cadbury was a going concern, but it is much better than it was when the building simply sat empty. And it may be better still in the future. It is ironic that the new training centre will benefit people like those who used to work at the candy factory. It will help thousands of unem- ployed workers acquire the skills they need to find a job. It will help thousands more who are already employed prepare for changes in their jobs and in the industry they work in. And it may be just, by creating a pool of flexible, well-trained work- ers, allow Ajax and Pickering and surrounding neighbors to attract more industry to build in our area. By helping make those who are already here more productive, it may also allow still more growth in the form of expansion. It would be a nice twist if the closing of the candy factory, which Seemed at the time a major blow to the region and still must hurt many of those who used to work there, actually ended in creating industrial jobs. Even the most bitter chocolate can have a sweet filling.
