sewers get
region nod
By LINDA WHITE
Staff Reporter
AJAX - A Pickenng Beach
resident is looking forward to
"gelling on with our lives"
after regional council
approved Wednesday the
installation of sanitary sewers.
Lynda Everson was among
those residents who attended
the meeting which saw some
councillors slam the plan to
install sanitary sewers
because storm sewers aren't
being installed at the same
time.
(Though Ajax council had
already unanimously
approved the plan, it went
before region because the
installation of sanitary sewers
is a regional responsibility.)
"It would be preferable to
have full urban service,
including storm sewers,"
works committee chairman
John Aker agreed. "But I
think (the installation of sani-
tary sewers) should be done."

a message for Benjamin and his family via fax to the
Housesitters at 683-0421. Housesitters will present their

Surefit's home decorator products available at factory prices
Home decorators and crafts
enthusiasts alike will value Sure
Fit's factory outlet.
Located in a 60,000-sq.ft. plant at
Westney Rd. S. and Fairall St-, the
outlet offers great savings on
fabrics sold by the yard, as well as
on ready-made decorator items.
There are two separate entities to
this business, the first is the plant,
where all the manufacturing is
done, and from which products are
created and sold to Canadian
retailers; the second is the factory
outlet - a store filled with a wide
variety of bedspreads, draperies,
window toppers, chair and sofa
throw covers, as well as cushions
and assorted accessories for the
home.
There's no shortage of color
schemes and styles. As well,
decorator materials are available in
a variety of weaves and prints at
prices that keep customers coming
back.
It's not unusual for bedroom
ensembles, generally sold at
retailer stores for $125, to sell at
Sure Fit for $65.
Besides bedroom ensembles. the
savings on first -quality duvets,
and accent pieces such as table
rounds and throw blankets are
mind-boggling. In addition, adds of
Imes, and items that reveal dye lot
variances represent even greater
savings for customers.
Furthermore, the outlet always
has in-store specials and one -of -a -

currently in the store priced at S5-
$10.
Continuing through July, the
factory outlet is promoting its
'Laval' ensemble of bedspread,
drapes and toppers, cushion and
pillow sham at 25% off the already
low price.
First-time customers visiting the
outlet during its opening hours
from Tuesday to Saturday, will be
enthralled at the selection
available, and even more
captivated by the low prices.
Bed pillows, although not
manufactured here, are available
for customer convenience.
You'll find fabrics in woven
materials that comprise polyester
and cotton blends; or 100%
polye
Upholstery fabrics in weighted
materials are also in the store.
Although Sure Fit has been in
business since 1959, it has just
recently started to raise its profile
in the community by involvement
in such activities as yard sales. At
a recent 'yard sale,' the firm raised
money for the Ajax -Pickering
Hospital's building fund. 1t also
donates craft materials to Durham
schools, and its staff members
avidly support the United Way .
The friendly staff is eager to serve
shoppers intent on getting value.
Regular customers will attest to
the helpful and enthusiastic service
which enables them to save money

AJAX-PICKERING - The busi-
ness that takes care of its customer
will flourish even in difficult times,
the Ajax -Pickering Board of Trade
heard Tuesday.
"No matter what product you're
selling, you're only selling two
things — solutions to problems and
good customer feeling," advised
Derrick Pick of Delaine Consulting,
who spoke at the board's monthly
luncheon on the topic of "Getting
Ahead in the New Economy."
Mr. Pick said companies make
three basic mistakes — thinking cur-
rent trends will continue, thinking
yesterday's solutions will solve
today's problems and neglecting the
opportunity for future change.
He advised businesses to
approach change with an open mind,
evaluate ideas and be "innovative"
in management.
"Listen to your customers and
their needs. It makes people feel
good when we listen and it puts us
ahead of the pack."
Listening to customers enables
companies to provide better solu-
tions and therefore increases busi-
ness, he pointed out. He advised
companies to "make it easy for the
customer to complain" and to
respond promptly when something
goes wrong.
Mr. Pick suggested businesses
"scrap" company policies and re -
mers key to business success
write them as "customer policies.
"You're only in business to get,
and keep, customers," he said. "The
better your relationship with cus-
tomers, the more product you're
going to sell."
Getting the "fundamentals" of
business light will ensure results, he
added. Those fundamentals include
spending more on employee train-
ing, paying attention to quality con-
trol and involving employees in
company changes by asking for their
opinions and ideas.
Mr. Pick said the one thing in a
company's control is "the moment
of truth" with a customer — the first
contact with the customer, the first
sale and the fust time there's a prob-
lem.
Salespeople who don't take care
of customers "will be left in the
cold" and reflect poor training, Mr.
Pick added. "You can only afford to
treat customers with disdain when
you're the only game in
town...Make sure your salespeople
project the image you want of your
company. They are the window to
the company."
Salespeople should be "polite,
sincere and interested" and should
exceed customers' expectations, he
said.
"Getting ahead in the new econo-
my is not so different than getting
ahead in the old economy," Mr, Pick
Region HQ vote months away
DURHAM - It'll be another few months before a decision is made on
the regional administrative centre proposed for downtown Oshawa.
Councillors agreed Wednesday to have an independent consultant
look at the Hilstone project, which would see a S37 -million, nine-storcv
regional administrative centre go up alongside a private office tower.
The project was narrowly defeated once, failing to clear a preliminary
hurdle on the issue of parking and site location. Those items must be
approved before the issues of financing and building design are even put
on the table.
But Oshawa mayor Nancy Diamond is armed with a "better package"
which calls for additional parking at the side of the proposed building,
answering concerns that some people could not or would not use under-
ground parking.
The revised plan also increases green space around the building
because some councillors felt the centre looked " patkcd in on the lot."

noticeable to visitors or patients but will affect staff.
'They include:
• A new management approach that would allow
the hospital board, staff, managers and employees to
get involved in decision-making and foster team-
work;
• Adding new positions on staff;
• Improving the areas of: committees, planning
and budgeting, human resources, materials manage-
ment, patient management systems, equipment man-
agement, and accounting;
• Re -structuring individual departments, particu-
larly the nursing department.
The consultant notes the hospital has "strengths"
that will help smooth the transitions, including "a
committed and supportive board: a new CEO with a
participatory style; an atmosphere of 'family' and
cooperation; and staff who are looking forward to
change."
Pickering
Beach
residents
mixed on
sewers
FROM PAGE I
dent Shane Wasmund,
who spearheaded the
movement for sewers, was
pleased with the "afford-
able compromise," saying
storm sewers would have
at least tripled" the cost
to be borne by residents.
He's confident the
decision not to install
storm sewers won't have
111 -effects on the commu-
nity because residents will
be following regional
guidelines when hooking
up to sanitary sewers,
Opponent Janis
Mitchell asked councillors
to "protect the rights of
the minority and turn
down this risky develop-
ment scheme."
Ajax councillor Susan
Dulny urged colleagues to
support the project, call-
ing septic tanks a "short-
term solution" which
aren't environmentally -
friendly and "should be
pumped out more often
than they are."
It will take four years
to complete the project,
with construction to begin
this fall. The first of four
phases will see sewers
installed on Seabreeze
Ave. and Poplar Ave.
between Seabreeze and
Beachview Ave.
The first phase will
cost the region about
$475,000. The town will
spend $190,000 bringing
roads, with ditches, up to
rural standards during the
firs! phase. Curbs, gutters
and sidewalks won't be
installed.
The lack of sewers in
the Pickering Beach area
resulted in a building
freeze there for almost
two decades.
The hospital has already acted on some of the rec-
ommendations, says Mrs. Paterson. "It's good news,"
she says of the report. "We're very pleased. We par-
ticipated through the whole thing. There aren't any
surprises to anybody — everybody participated."
Staff were interviewed and invited to make sug-
gestions during the consultant's review, she says. "A
lot of ideas (in the report) came from within; they're
recommendations we're happy to do. Change is still
difficult but the exciting part is we're moving ahead."
Because there are costs associated with the recov-
ery plan — such as the need for new staff positions
and computers — the hospital is waiting to hear if the
ministry of health can offer financial help, says Mrs.
Paterson.
The consultant's review lets the ministry know
why budget problems exist and whether it's under-
funding the hospital, she adds. While other hospitals
are closing beds, "We're still doing great. We're not
closing one bed; we're opening at least 20 more."

the future
By wonderful coincidence, the number of new jobs created by
Durham College's takeover of the old Cadbury candy factory in Whitby
is the same as the number of jobs lost when the factory closed.
That coincidence may be a positive omen for things to conic out of
the new training centre.
Of course the quality of the new jobs is much different -- they will be
supported entirely by taxpayers; the wages of the old ones came from
private industry.
It's a similar case for the building. Yes, it's good to have it occupied
and in productive use, but before it closed it was occupied by a taxpay-
ing industry that helped to support area services. Durham College will
pay no taxes, and the $20 million it will cost the province to create the
new training centre will come directly from taxes.
The situation is not as good as it was when Cadbury was a going
concern, but it is much better than it was when the building simply sat
empty. And it may be better still in the future.
It is ironic that the new training centre will benefit people like those
who used to work at the candy factory. It will help thousands of unem-
ployed workers acquire the skills they need to find a job. It will help
thousands more who are already employed prepare for changes in their
jobs and in the industry they work in.
And it may be just, by creating a pool of flexible, well-trained work-
ers, allow Ajax and Pickering and surrounding neighbors to attract more
industry to build in our area. By helping make those who are already
here more productive, it may also allow still more growth in the form of
expansion.
It would be a nice twist if the closing of the candy factory, which
Seemed at the time a major blow to the region and still must hurt many
of those who used to work there, actually ended in creating industrial
jobs.
Even the most bitter chocolate can have a sweet filling.

Helping teens with special needs
To the editor,
This letter is directed to the
people in Durham who are
unaware of a very worthwhile
program offered to "teenagers"
from age 14-21, with special
needs. The program is offered by
The Ajax -Pickering and Whitby
Association for Community Liv-
ing- It offers recreational, as well
as work experience, opportunities
for seven weeks every summer.
The recreational opportunities
are individualized to ensure each
student's interests are met and the
time is enjoyed by all. The job
placement experiences range
from working at the town library

comes letters to the editor on

matters and anything else of

to a local restaurant or grocery
store, and provide the student with
the skills necessary to pursue a
community-based employment
opportunity after graduation.
Some of the students are paid a
salary while others receive other
forms of remuneration from their
employers.
The program relies heavily on
government funding and the gen-

erosity of private donations, all of
which arc down considerably.
Such donations are.used to pay the
salaries of the counsellors who
work with these students on a 2:1
ratio.
This program gives the youths
who participate, a feeling of
belonging and normality. Without
this program, my daughter, and
other "teenagers" with special
needs would be sitting at home
alone, all summer. This type of
service which is not available,
through the recreation department
of our towns or through the
employment office, is a critical
support to families such as mine
and it deserves our support. In
conclusion, if there are any
groups, companies or individuals
who would like to know more
about this wonderful summer pro-
gram, or who would like to make a
donation, please send it to The

McLauchlan
headliner at
Pickering fest
By JUDI BOBBITT
Staff Reporter
PICKERING - Folk music legend Murray McLauchlan will
make a special guest appearance during Pickering's first Grassroots
music & arts festival.
Grassroots, to be held at Pickering Museum Village Sunday,
Aug. 9, will feature live entertainment, workshops, demonstrations
and displays designed to celebrate Canada's music and art heritage.
Four thousand people are expected to attend the festival, which
will be the culmination of eight months of planning by town staff

PICKERING - The town of
Pickering needs sponsors to help
finance the Grassroots festival.
Despite town budget cutbacks, a full
slate of events is offered Aug. 9 at
Pickering Museum Village.
Commercial, service and retail organi-
zations are being offered publicity by
the town in return for support.
Help is needed in both the areas of
offsetting costs of performers' fees and
providing food for entertainers in a hos-
pitality area, says museum village man-
ager Lynn Winterstein.
For more information on sponsor-
ship, call Ms. Winterstein at 420-4620.

The hardest thing about choosing
floral arrangements is deciding
between all of the different

tips should make the decisions
easier.
• ~tart shopping fix a florist four to
six months before your wedding.
• Ask to see photos of weddings
prospective florists have done in
the past.
• Consider the ovLrall style of your
wedding when choosing
arrangement%. freestanding sprays
of daisies or chrysanthemums are
nice for the altar.
• Small arrangements are often
used to encircle candle holders.
Some options are baby's breath or

ribbon dress up aisle seats.
