Arca people employed by GM and more than two dozen feeder industries in the two towns arc applauding word that the auto giant has assured the future of a threatened Oshawa car plant — at least for the short term — by giving it a product to build. Oshawa's massive GM operation, employing about 17,000 people, includes one truck and two car assembly plants — one of which was considered to be vulnerable to the company's well-publicized downsizing program. That's because the car plant, which makes the Buick Regal and the Chevrolet Lumina, had no work promised beyond 1993. Further, GM had indicated it would shift produc- tion of the Lumina to a plant in the United States for 1994. She was most touched by a one -year-old boy who stayed in a room alone because of a rash that couldn't be cured. "He just wanted to be touched and loved," says Janine. Still,' there was no greed" on the part of staff when the group donated vitamins, medicine and medical equipment, her mother Evelyn recalls. "They have such a spirit of giving. They took what they needed and left something for someone else in need." The same attitude of sharing was evident at the university resi- dence where the group stayed. A pile of Bibles put out on a table was shared by many students, who were spotted reading the book with the help of a dictio- nary. Among the lighter moments enjoyed by the group was dress- ing in national costume, learning how to kill and pluck a chicken, a sports day with youngsters, and performing concerts and a puppet show. When asked why she partici- pates in missions, Julie Paton, 18, answers quickly. "Why not? As I ong as I have something to give, I want to do so." As reported in the News Advertiser Wednesday, a fuel spill from a tanker truck caused a half-dozen acci- dents along a stretch of Bayly St. after the fuel mixed with rain, making roads slick. There were no serious injuries, say police. Clean-up efforts forced the closure of Bayly St. from Sandy Beach Rd. in Pickering east to Westney Rd. in Ajax for several hours. Westney Rd. was also closed southbound from Bayly St. for about a quarter - mile. Police, firefighters from Ajax and Pickering, and works department officials from Ajax, Pickering and Durham region were on the scene. Durham Regional Police say no charges will be laid in the incident. Power users going nutty By JUDI BOBBITT Staff Reporter PICKERING - Furry critters are driving Picker- ing Hydro officials squir- relly and making residents nutty. Like something out of a Stephen King novel, hyperactive squirrels have been making dawn raids on hydro transformers for the past two or three weeks, causing brief power interruptions in hundreds of homes. The rebel rodents have struck the Bay Ridges area, the Westshore community and other neighborhoods. Electric alarm clocks — not to mention resi- dents — are being turned off; victims of the furry delinquents are frequently late for work. "It's a very strange occurrence," says Picker- ing Hydro general manag- er John Wiersma. "We've never experienced it before." His office has been flooded with com- plaints, he adds. "Cus- tomers are getting impa- tient. It's kind of a frus- trating experience for us. - The bushy -tailed ban- dits regularly stage their attacks at dawn after they wake up, says Mr. Wiers- ma, who speculates there may be a squirrel infesta- tion in the Bay Ridges area. The momentary power outages affect between 700 and 800 homes. But Hydro plans to put the criminal critters behind bars — the bars of squirrel guards which will be fitted onto transform- ers. Mr. Wiersma asks cus- tomers to be patient while guards are installed this year and next. The work will be carried out in con- junction with upgrades to transformers, lines and poles previously planned for the Bay Ridges area. e Ontario Hydro spent $20 mil - _ion on the year-long monitoring ;program, carried out at 21 gener- ting station sites under a provin- iCial ministry of the environment `initiative called Municipal/Indus- trial Strategy for Abatement :(N USA). Ontario Hydro says it plans more work under the MISA pro- gram to determine whether there's any significance to the levels of contaminants found. The utility will also work with the ministry of the environment to develop ways to safeguard and protect water quality. Hydro says its goal is the vir- tual elimination of contaminants from discharges._....... . Overall, the company says it's pleased with monitoring results. :More than 450,000 measure- ments were taken and most of J53 contaminants being sought were rarely detected in Hydro discharges. Opinion End the 'torture' of little Benja min Think about it the next time you're having a particularly good day. Think about it when you embrace your healthy child, if you've been so blessed. Think about it the next time you're contemplating your future and all the great things it holds for you. Yes, think about the situation facing Benjamin Britskey. The little three-year-old has had a rougher life than most of us will, even if we live to he a ripe old age. Benjamin might never get beyond his childhood. You sec, Benjamin's body is rejecting the liver that was transplanted in him shortly after his first birthday. Though doctors at Pittsburgh Chil- dren's Hospital have accepted Benjamin into a study of an experimental drug, already in its fifth year. Ontario's health plan refuses to pay for his out -of -country hospital care, which would amount to about S 10,(x)0. Though that decision has been appealed, it could be months before a hear- ing. If nothing is done to halt the rejection, the young Pickering native will need a second liver transplant within two years. That would cost OHI Pat least SI00,(x10. The waiting is "just torture," admits his mom Sharon. You can help end that wait. Friends of the family hope to raise money to help send Benjamin to Pittsburgh through the fourth annual Paul and Jamie Coburn ?s9emorial Golf Tournament, a spurt which is Benjamin's favorite pastime. I find it somewhat incredulous that so much time, effort and money goes into the annual Ajax Home Week, while Canada Day goes largely unnoticed in Ajax, other than relatively localized and indi- vidual initiatives, such as the street barbecue staged by our Member of Parliament, Rene Soctens. While we are faced with an ever-increasing risk of losing our country to regional interests and animosities, the greater risk is one of' general apathy and disin- terest. I was appalled at the recently -announced Gallup Poll that indicated that 71 per cent of those polled would prefer the Canada Day holiday be held on the nearest Monday or Friday, in order to guarantee a long week- end. Those same respondents would probably be dumbstruck if a similar suggestion where made to move Christmas from Dec. 25 in order to ensure an extended weekend. While a significant number of Canadians do not observe Christmas, we are all Canadians. However, instead of viewing July 1 as a day to be ercvered, most see it as just anoth- er day off. The adage "Use it or lose it'" seems frighteningly prophetic. 0 4. Assuming that on July 1, 1993 we still have an intact Canada to cel- ebrate, I would dearly love to see a localinitiative whereby Ajax Home Week was pushed back to coincide with Canada Day festiv- ities across the country. Display- ing community spirit and cele- brating the existence of what the United Nations has deemed the most desirable country in the world in which to live would seem fitting and appropriate. Home Week should culminate on July 1 with the waterfront fire- works display... a suitable cap- ping of the week's activities and the birthday of our nation. Most Canadians seem almost embarrassed by patriotism.... whether it be the singing of our national anthem or the flying of a flag. We have taken our country for granted. The Durham Board of Educa- tion will receive a grant of $471,748 for projects totalling $702,000, and the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board will get $514,142 for pro- jects that'll cost $626,960. Local taxpayers will pick up the difference. Ontario minister of education Tony Silipo recently announced that S46 million in grants will be allocated to provincial school boards as a job creation scheme. The funding will help support renovations and alterations in heating, ventilation, wiring, roof- 40ing, access for the disabled, asbestos removal, fire safety and sewage disposal, libraries and gyms. School boards across the province submitted requests to the ministry for specific projects. The grant will help fund six projects of the separate board, says Gerry Blake, superintendent of program. Among the projects are asbestos removal at Holy Redeemer in Pickering, and roof- ing at St. Bernadette's and St. Francis de Sales schools in Ajax. "It's an excellent project for the board to be able to tap into a provincial initiative like this," says Mr. Blake. No one was available at the public school board to give details of its projects. The June sales represent a 9 per cent increase over the month of May. This figure breaks the natural cycle of Five Per Cent Down a According to a recent national survey conducted by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, thousands of Canadians were able to purchase a home sooner because of five per cent downpayments. Seventy-three per cent of those surveyed indicated that they would not have been able to purchase a home when they did if not for the First home Loan Insurance Program. -This confirms that the program is assisting financially -wise homebuyers who can carry a mortgage, but who had not been able to accumulate sufficient downpayment to buy a home," said Guy Gagn6, CMHC's Director of i lnderw•riting. On July 9, the squad lost its fourth game in a row in the East- ern Ontario Baseball Associa- tion, dropping a 15-6 decision to Pon Hope. Going into this week's action, Ajax had a record of nine wins and four losses and is tied for second with Kingston, two points behind Peterborough. Against Port Hope at the Ajax Community Centre, Ajax was trailing 2-0 in the second inning when Mike O'Brien walked, moved to third on consecutive singles by Dave Meredith and Steve Wyzynski and scored on a sacrifice fly by Collin Pullins. Ajax eventually left the bases loaded. Ian Fletcher scored in the third on an RBI single by O'Brien and again in the fourth, when he singled, stole second and third, and crossed the plate on afielder's choice by Lance Desroches. Ajax won all three Eastern Ontario Baseball Association contests last week, including a 29-4 rout of Belleville. The Spartans scored 15 runs in one inning on the way to the win over the host Belleville Blues. Pitchers Andrew Alley and Evan Risko combined to limit the Blues to five hits. Ajax juveniles go on rampage, win 12th consecutive ball game AJAX - An even dozen. That's where the winning streak stands for the Ajax Spartans Canada Trust juvenile baseball team. In its two most recent Eastern Ontario Baseball Association games, Ajax topped Port Hope 4-1 and hammered Peterborough 16-5. In Port Hope, Jeff Canham picked up the pitching win, giving up two hits and striking out 10 batters. Doug Soutar smacked a double and scored on Brad Virostek's single. Virostek stole second and third, and scored on Kyle Sheppard's single. Other Spartan offence came from Sean Balcarras, Chris Taylor and lames David. David and Risko held Picker- ing to six hits and struck out 13 batters. Ajax also struggled against Whitby, but prevailed 5-3. Virostek and Sheppard shared the pitching duties, limiting Whitby to a pair of singles. Jeff Greene paced the offence by hitting his first home run and driving in two runs. Other hits came from Alley, Risko, Balcar- tras, Virostek and Sheppard.
