The school recently donated 51,450 from its annual fashion show to the Children's Aid Society of Durham. The money will help provide group treatment for sex- ually -victimized children. Since curbside blue box pick- up was cut to once every two weeks back in February, the amount of recyclable material picked up has actually increased by about 16 per cent. "That's phenomenal... some people thought there would be a decrease in the amount of material picked up," says Ken Donnelly, Durham's waste reduction man- ager. About five per cent of the increase can be directly attributed to the addition of corrugated cardboard to the pick-up (Ma Bell's telephone g books have also been added). But the other 11 per cent, he says, is due to stepped-up efforts by householders to fill their blue boxes. A promotion blitz explaining the change, he says, may have "heightened everyone's interest in recycling". The outstanding performance has caught the eye of other cash - starved municipalities. And local householders will soon be able to get environmen- tally -friendly composters delivered right to their door -- for a small fee, of course _ The composters arc available at participating nurseries now for S15. That's down from a previous price of more than $20, thanks to the provincial ministry of the environment, which has upped its subsidy to 66 per cent from 50 per cent. The region of Durham acts as the middle man in the project, buying the composters in bulk and distributing them to the nurs- eries. About 20,00 have already been distributed over the past year, says works director J.R. McCorkell. To further increase those numbers and at the same time pro- vide much-needed jobs for youths, he says the region plans to plug the program door to door through an organization called Students for the Environment. ..Students will also deliver to householders for $21. It mak,-s sense financially, Mr. Donnelly says, but it's also "better for the environment". Instead of picking up half -full blue boxes once a week, the gas -guzzling and exhaust -emitting fleet of trucks now chalk up just half the number of kilometres to pick up full boxes. He did, however, mention one glitch. Some house - holders are complaining that corrugated cardboard is being left behind. The big reason, he explains, is that h fridge -size containers cannot he handled by the workers unless they're cut into slabs ahout the size of a blue ho)x. "Cut it up," he pleads. In other cases, he says, cardboard is being left behind because it's contaminated with paint or oil. Feel free to use it without charge or cop right fee. Abolish the provincial govern- ments. Divide provincial authori- ty between the federal govern- ment and 'regions. In Ontario, these regions would be the regional municipalities, where they exist. Provinces are no longer needed. They were created I n a time when it took several days to get from Toronto to Kingston. Today we can breakfast in Newfoundland and dine in British Columbia. This intermedi- ate level of government is just a drain on taxpayers. The federal government should get the more philosophical powers of the current provincial governments, while the regions would get the more admmistratiye and localized powers. Nlas.sive amounts of government duplica- tion would he eliminated. The People would feel much more =mpowcred simple because it Is -much easici to titch[ city hall than Queen', Park. With the provinces gone, how- ever. how do we allocate seats in the Senate.' IA real hot i,sue these daxs.l Each 'region Lets one scat in the senate. No more squabbles 11aZA-A, yoalc t Derek Alstein says, "I'll be going to a friend's cottage near Hamilton and maybe a trip to Canada's Wonderland." Timothy John Whittaker The publisher reserves the right to classify or refuse Publisher any advertisement at his disc refion. about over or under representation. Certainly \Ictropolitan Toronto and the tilomrcal Urban Commu- nuy would loose out by this pro- cess. dost of the rest of the coun- try, however, would gel something thc have never had, their veli own senator. This solution offers each `regiongreat potential to realize it, drum, and ambition,. It would allow us to give equal recognition to the people of the first nations without giving them special treat- ment. So called 'reserved would simple become regions, equal to all others in even respect includ- ing: Senate representation. Pre- dominantly English and predomi- nantly French regions would be able to deal with their own needs, regardless of where the% are locat- ed in the country. No more Canada vs. Quetki. Ontario Francophones and Quebec Anglophones on equal fooungs with their neighbors. This is no simple solution. It would take many years to implc- ment. I think the potcnual is worth the effort. Unfortunately, it could only come to pass provided a lo of politicians started caring mor. atxout the country and its citizens and less about themselves and their powers, real and imagined. 1 won't hold my breath, but I refuse to give up hope. The "industrial" band will release its third record, Premeditated Murder, this July. An earlier recording, Release, has met with favorable reviews. The hand's also released a "mini LP" titled Punishments. The group has opened for Fugazi, Pigface, Frontline A,semhly and Gwar, and is mak:ne a name for itself. T.c ba:c:'< said to be fuelled h, 'death metal, horror a7:'. restlessness." The hand's James Cavalluzzo has made live shows infamous by carving: a pentagram into the flesh of his ;;hest. He has also been said to appear naked on stage. In a prey; release. Cavalluzzo explains why he carves his chest. "People think I'm >ome sort of sado- masochist and I stet off on that. Well no, I don't get off on that. I don't :ike the fact that I have a scar on m,. chest from It. The reason why I do :t — It's all svmhohc. I'm. grahbing their atten::on. There's no pont to go :home and start doodling on %our chest. To me, :,,'s The reason why I do it because 1 have an aud:ence. If there was no audience, 1 wou:d not be dos ;g it. ' theatres are in store for the Oshawa audience wi ? depend larger on what fans want, sa\.s Cavalluzzo. "«'e plan •t off the audience. ' Hes still carving, his chest for audiences who've never seen it, he sass, and might treat Oshawa to the spectacle. Due to a small stage, the show won't he "overly theatrical", he adds. Fellow band member Stephen Crowhurst says t;,e group tries to do different things at each show. It's never played Oshawa before, he points out, so' -expect the unexpected." In explaining the band's industrial influence. Cavalluzzo has said, "The reason I use the industrial sounds for The Release and Punishments is because they are very sexual sounding things. The music has got to come across very sexual." A press release says Cavalluzzo's performances often breed "criticism or disgust'. He continents on controversy surrounding the band. 1 think that most people who know the band know that what I'm saying is completely the opposite to what some people are taking it as. It's an understanding of man's dominance over women, on the (Release) album cover, in the artwork, and in the lyrics; the reason why we're showing it is to understand it and to make awareness of it. We are not doing it to promote it in any way." Most band members are from Pickering. Local lads include Cavalluzzo, Crowhurst, Rob Wright, and Steve Jelliman. Rounding out the roster is Dave Kiner from Toronto. Malhavoc's show at The Ozone begins at 8 p.m. Sunday at 15 Simcoe St. N. with special guest Soulstorm. Admission is $5 at the door. With no less than six American universities knocking at his decor to offer scholarships in several different sports, McKenzie is sure he's made the fight choice in the right sport. McKenzie, 20, who starred for the Pickering High Trojans in track and field, basketball, soccer and volleyball in his five years at ' the school, wil lattend Westcm !Michigan University in Kalama- zoo. Michigan on a track and field scholarship th;.s fall. The talented athlete received scholarship offers from such U.S. universities as South Illinois, Jason McKenzie Ohio's Kent State, Wisconsin's Bowling Green University, the University of Montana and Hast- ings College in Nebraska in both track and field and soccer before finally settling on Western Michi- gan. Mostly, says McKenzie, his decision to go to Western Michi- gan was based on the school's reputation as a good business school. He also received assur- ances academics would come first, with minimal pressure to perform at track and field. "When I went down there, they stressed academics first, " says McKenzie, a top student at Pick- ering High. "They promised I could graduate in four years and they won't be putting much pres- sure on me with track and field. They also have a goof business school." The extent of the scholarship (80 per cent of expenses covered), the school's proximity to his Pick - grin, home and, the school'; solid track program also figured promi- nently in his decision. Western Michigan's offer was exactly what I was loirkin_ for," says McKeniie who was Pickering High's midget, junior and senior athlete of the year, while winning the school's top track athlete award last year. "Eight} per cent of my school expense: will he paid. If I perform well, they will look after my room and book -s, too. "I wanted to stay within dn\- ing distance of my home. It's also about six hours awa% by train. That was important to me. "Then also have a ver,, rood track program. They lost Ui East- ,rn MiAlgan lin the `CAA Division One conference champi- onshipi last year. With the addi- tion of some new cu,,,,. the\ think this will put them oyer the top. I won't be red shirted: they expect me to make a direct impact on the team." After suffering an ankle :njur\ in basketball earlier this year. M,:Kcn/ie feared his scholarship offers could be in jcoPardy. The injury also kept him out of track and field this summer. However, the ankle healed and the schor,l, had no hesitation with their otters. "I thought I definitely wouldn't be able to sitm this ye r. But, as it turned out, they j understo>(f." IcKenzle's been playing five sports for most of his life. He's been playing soccer since W_ age five and helped the «'ex- ford Soccer Club in Scarhor- ough to a national champi- onship in 1990. He also has an extensive background in hockey, and originally thought that sport might lead him to a U.S. scholar- ship. At Pickering High School, he played basketball, soccer and vol- leyball, while also running track and field in which he won Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association's medals in the triple jump and long jump in 1990 and 1991. He decided to pursue a career in track and field as it was a sport to which he's never fully devoted his full attention. "I've never really given it a good try. That's why I chose track.,, Pickering High track and field coach Cyril Sahadath also had high praise for McKenzie. "Jason's abilities are all natu- ral;" he says. "He has been jump- ing for only a few years with a minimal amount of training. You could never find a better all-round athlete and student than Jason."
