Sally Longo was recognized for her contributions by the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board at their meeting Monday. She received the Ontario Sepa- rate School Board Teachers' Association (OSSTA) Award of Merit, which goes to trustees who've made a significant contri- bution to the Catholic educational Sally Longo community; who have strong Catholic leadership qualities: and who give witness to the faith commitment. Mrs. Longo served as a trustee for 13 years and served as board chair in 1985 and 1986. She retired last spring after moving out of the region. She's the executive director of Community Care of Ajax-Pick- enng. Also honored were those students who had been nominated for the OSSTA Youth Award, including Kathleen Monk of Archbishop Denis O'Connor in Ajax, and Adam Swartz. of St. Isaac Jogues, Adam Bradley of St. Monica, and Jasper Gahunia of Our Lady of the Bay, all of Pickering. Two students, Andrea Vander tient of St. James in Ajax, and Vidal Chavannes of St. Mary Secondary School in Pickering, received the OSSTA Scrolls for Youth Award. That award is given to students who have strong leadership qualities, exemplify the Catholic faith and school philosophy, have a strong family commitment, relate well to fellow students and teachers, are involved in school and community activities, and demonstrate a commitment to a difficult situation by having the courage and ambition to follow it through. According to board chair Tom Oldman, 11 nomi- nations were put forward out of 20,000 students, which is "something to be proud of." Staff who rang in 25 years of service received 25 - year -service -award bells, including Brian Vrebosch of St. Isaac Jogues, Roger Racetie of St. Mary's and Geoff Scahill of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, all of Pickering, and Terry Crowley of St. Catherine of Siena and Catherine Simpson of St. James, both of Ajax. Ironically, the off -again, on - again meeting was originally called to discuss "better commu- nications" between the town and Mr. Wiseman's office. Council, which had earlier notified the public of the meeting and then cancelled it, voted unan- imously to hold a public discus- sion with Mr. Wiseman, says town clerk Bruce Taylor. A plan- ning meeting was underway in council chambers at the time. Some residents were in atten- dance for the planning meeting, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. But members of the press weren't present, having been assured Mr. Wiseman wouldn't be there. The MPP says he expected to be in the legislature until mid- night and therefore told council- lors he couldn't meet with them. But, as explained by his assistant. Julia Schembri, procedures that would have allowed late-night sit- tings of the legislature "didn't happen." Council didn't have to grant Mr. Wiseman the last- minute opportunity to speak, she points out Mr. 'Kiseman admits, "I had concerns that the public had been told the meeting was cancelled." But, he says, he was faced with a dilemma when the legislative sit- tings were called off. "What do I do').. -1 decided to leave it up to (council)." When the meeting with Mr. Wiseman was originally sched- uled for 7 p.m. that night, the town sent out public agendas. While that doesn't make these Cadarackque Public School students unique, the fact that their teacher is reading to them in French and they're responding in the same lan- guage does. The French Immersion class is a pilot project which introduces Ajax and Pickering students to French in Grade 1 instead of kindergarten, which is now a common program in 0 public schools throughout Durham. "It's been a wonderful year," admits teacher Julia Goss. "It was challenging at the beginning, but you reap the benefits at this time of year when students are reading and speaking French well." When the class of 15 arrived at school in September, few could say more than 'Bonjour." Today. "they can make themselves understood in a real-life situation," Miss Goss says proudly. Aside from discussing fire drills and other safety concerns in English, Miss Goss has spoken only French to the class. "I don't speak to them any differently than I would to a French colleague," she says. Likewise, students speak only French while they're attending school, including recess, lunch breaks and field trips. "Everywhere but on the school bus," says Kyle Beaudoin, 6. Teaching them a new language required "a lot of acting," recalls Miss Goss. It also meant many poems and songs so students learned the "rhythm of the language. They don't speak with halts between words, but have developed a nice flow." Kerry Linquist, 19, will compete in the women's 100 -metre and 200 -metre races at the trials to select the Canadian track and field team going to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain in late Julv. The York University student and member of the Oshawa Legion Track Club is candid about her chances of making the Canadian team; ;he has an outside : han; c :t: `,est. But, her goal is to post best times in {E _ - .__ - hath events in Montreal. "I*m looking forward to it for the xperience. I don't expect to make the i team this time, but I've been training hard for the trials since the spring," ' gays Linquist, who's in her first year of 1 l* university after a prolific high school track career at Ajax High School. The Olympic Trials represents her first major competition since suffering a stress fracture on her right fibula bone this past winter. The semi-finals and finals of that event will be run on Saturday morning. The 200 -metre heats will go Saturday night, with the semi-finals and finals to be run on Sunday morning. The sprinter will also compete in four other major events during the summer. After the trials. Linquist will run in the Summer Games trials at York University on June 27. This will be followed by the Senior Provincial Championships in Sudbury in early July. Her final meet of the summer is the National Track and Field Championships in British Columbia Aug. 14 to 16. Several other area athletes will also compete at the Olympic Trials. Pickering High School's Sam Davis will compete in the long jump and triple jump, Kyle Robinson will run in the 110 -metre hurdles. Pickering resident named to coach Uxbridge junior C team PICKERING - A long-time Pickering area hockey coach has signed on with an Uxbridge junior team for the upcoming season. Bud Bower of Pickering will serve as the head coach of the Uxbridge Bruins of the Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League, the club's gener- al manager C h u c k MmPhillips announced Monday night. Bower comes to the Bruins with 16 years of junior hockey coaching experi- ence, most recently serving as a coach with the Oshawa Legion- aires Metro Junior A team. Other junior teams Bower has coached include the Pickering Panthers, Thornhill Thunderbirds and the Weston Dukes. "Bud will be a welcome addi- tion to the Bruins, bringing disci- pline, motivation and a great ability to teach," says Phillips. Besides coaching, Bower has also served as a general manager and a scout with several junior clubs. In addition to his coaching duties with Uxbridge, he will continue to scout for the OHL major junior A Guelph Storm this year. The Uxbridge Bruins also named former Pickering Panther defenceman Mike Colwell as an assistant coach with the team. Kerry Linquist, 19, will compete in the women's 100 -metre and 200 -metre races at the trials to select the Canadian track and field team going to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain in late Julv. The York University student and member of the Oshawa Legion Track Club is candid about her chances of making the Canadian team; ;he has an outside : han; c :t: `,est. But, her goal is to post best times in {E _ - .__ - hath events in Montreal. "I*m looking forward to it for the xperience. I don't expect to make the i team this time, but I've been training hard for the trials since the spring," ' gays Linquist, who's in her first year of 1 l* university after a prolific high school track career at Ajax High School. The Olympic Trials represents her first major competition since suffering a stress fracture on her right fibula bone this past winter. The injury ground her university indoor track sea - Y on to a halt, keeping her off the track _Yy for the entire winter. The injury "bothers me now from time to time. It has put my training I back quite a bit. It's a bit of a disap- pointment for me," says Linquist. Kerry Linquist Linquist will run in one of the 100 - metres tonight. The semi-finals and finals of that event will be run on Saturday morning. The 200 -metre heats will go Saturday night, with the semi-finals and finals to be run on Sunday morning. The sprinter will also compete in four other major events during the summer. After the trials. Linquist will run in the Summer Games trials at York University on June 27. This will be followed by the Senior Provincial Championships in Sudbury in early July. Her final meet of the summer is the National Track and Field Championships in British Columbia Aug. 14 to 16. Several other area athletes will also compete at the Olympic Trials. Pickering High School's Sam Davis will compete in the long jump and triple jump, Kyle Robinson will run in the 110 -metre hurdles. Pickering resident named to coach Uxbridge junior C team PICKERING - A long-time Pickering area hockey coach has signed on with an Uxbridge junior team for the upcoming season. Bud Bower of Pickering will serve as the head coach of the Uxbridge Bruins of the Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League, the club's gener- al manager C h u c k MmPhillips announced Monday night. Bower comes to the Bruins with 16 years of junior hockey coaching experi- ence, most recently serving as a coach with the Oshawa Legion- aires Metro Junior A team. Other junior teams Bower has coached include the Pickering Panthers, Thornhill Thunderbirds and the Weston Dukes. "Bud will be a welcome addi- tion to the Bruins, bringing disci- pline, motivation and a great ability to teach," says Phillips. Besides coaching, Bower has also served as a general manager and a scout with several junior clubs. In addition to his coaching duties with Uxbridge, he will continue to scout for the OHL major junior A Guelph Storm this year. The Uxbridge Bruins also named former Pickering Panther defenceman Mike Colwell as an assistant coach with the team. A former university hockey player, .Colwell has served as an instruc- tor at the Panthers' development camp and currently with the Durham Region Hockey School. He has also been involved with the Ian Young Goaltending School for the past several years. Returning as the club's gener- al manager for the fourth season is Chuck Phillips. The purpose is to get an early commitment from players which will give organizers more time to set up teams and ice schedules before the season begins. The cost for registration is the same as last year -- 5140 for bunnies (age seven and under), and S 165 for all other age groups. The early registration form and a post-dated cheque for Sept- 15 must be returned to the association before July 5. Anyone interested in becoming a ringette coach should complete an application form and return it to the association before July 5.
