The candidate sites ring the hamlet of Whitevale, with one just north of Cherrywood and another between Green River and Brougham. What's more, a proposed 800 -acre dump that would be shared by Metro and York region is located on the Pickering -Markham townline. (See map). "Pickering's been shafted again," says Lloyd Thomas, president of the Whitevale Residents' Association and chairman of Ajax -Pickering Citizens Together (PACT) for the Environment. "They're trying to frac- ture the community so everyone will oppose everyone else. We're going to have to stick together." A total of 17 Durham sites was announced Thursday by the NDP government's Interim Waste Authority, with Bowmanville and Port Perry also targeted as host communities. The list will be shortened to five or six sites in three months, with one preferred site to be chosen next spring. The dump will be used for Durham's garbage only. It will be ironic if the Whitevale site is chosen, he says, since Durham region had previously spent "around $4 mil- lion" to come up with the same site — only to have it quashed when the NDP came to power. Pickering politicians Thursday denounced premier Bob Rae's government for dumping on the town. Councillor Rick Johnson, in whose ward all seven sites are located, said he was "shocked" and "upset" and called for local MPP Jim Wiseman to cross the floor of the legislature and join another party. "I'm disappointed with pre- mier Bob Rae, who stood on the ground of Whitevale during his election campaign, and swept his arm across the land and promised no farmland would be used (for a dump)," said Mr. Johnson. "I'm just devastated ... I know we're going to have a legal battle ahead of us." Acting mayor Maurice Brenner said council would "stand united" on earlier resolutions to oppose any more dumps in Pickering. The town solicitor has already been instructed to review docu- ments pertaining to the dump search with consultants, he said. Mr. Brenner urged the com- munity to unite and make its opposition to a dump known to the province. "We only won (a fight against a dump) the first time as a team, and we'll only win this time as a team." The IWA will host a public workshop on the dump -search process on July 18 at a location yet to be announced. In the mean- time, a community information centre where residents can learn more has been set up at 627 Kingston Rd., in a strip plaza on the south side of Hwy. 2 just west of Whites Rd. It will be open weekdays from 2 to 9 p.m., Satur- days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The centre's telephone number is 837- 5657. Council backs plan to block building on Frenchman's Bay PICKERING - A proposed de�a1 that could see the town buy land on Frenchman's Bay to save it from development was unanimously endorsed by council Monday. The town will pay a maximum of S500,000 for 20 acres of land on the east side of the bay if the remainder of the S900,000 price tag is picked up by the '.Metro Toronto and Region Con_scn-ation Authority. The property is owned by Sandbun' Homes, which wants to build to-Amhomes on the site. Council heard from three residents on the subject Monday, two of whom supported the deal. Illi One step forward, I Yes, and no, to Sunday shopping two steps back Following quickly on the heels of Wednesday's announcement lifting the ban on Sunday shopping, the NDP government is mov- ing to shove its labor law reform through the legislature. While the proposed changes to the Ontario Labor Relations Act have been modified somewhat since their original conception, the bill will create havoc with any recovery the province is making in this recession. If approved, changes to the labor act will make it easier for employees to form a union; place a ban on the hiring of replace- ment workers at companies hit by strikes; and for the first time grant domestics, security guards and professionals (not self- employed) the right to organize unions. Even part-time workers will be granted the right to join the same bargaining units as full- time employees. With this bill, Premier Bob Rae is sacrificing economic recov- ery with his commitment to organized labor. It's pay back time to the union leaders who helped put him in office. The bill will do aothing to create jobs or encourage new businesses to set up shop in Ontario. It will more likely send businesses packing. Lopsided labor laws are hardly the way to inspire confidence in the business communi- ty. While the government should be concentrating on building an attractive climate where companies want to do business, it is doing the exact opposite -- forcing them to rethink their positions and consider moving cast, west or south. Nk'hile the NDP majority has the power to ram these labor law amendments through, it's not too late. Let's hope clearer heads pre- vail and the government considers what the business leaders of this province are saving -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The results are in and it seems that most Ajax and Pickering residents agree with Premier Bob Rae's move to lift the ban on Sunday shopping. According to the News Advertiser's Sunday shopping poll, 63 per cent are in favor of allowing stores to open on Sundays. The views were mixed and peo- ple's reasons for their stand varied widely. The following are some of the better comments, for and against Sun- day shopping. Voting for Sunday shopping was Carolyn Lindell of Ajax who says, "In this time of high unemployment rates and the reduction in the number of part-time jobs for students, it seems that Sunday shopping is a timely solu- tion for all concerned. "Those people who would like Sundays set aside for family days or church days still have the freedom of choice to do so." Others in favor of Sunday shop- ping said the following: • "I fail to understand why Sunday shopping has become an issue. By opening Sundays, nobody's rights are violated. Simply, those who wish to shop mav; those who don't may refrain. Likewise, shopkeepers who wish to open may; and those who don't may refrain. "Many people already work Sun- days, ie. nurses, doctors, firefighters, police officers, factory workers, con- venience store clerks, etc. Sunday shopping would provide employment Editor's notebook opportunities for many who would welcome the work, ie. students and part-time workers who would benefit from additional hours. So, nobody loses. What's the beef?" — Ernestine Vallee, Pickering. - "It's time that Canada got her head out of the sand and started flying like an Eagle. I'm all for it, especially food stores." — Nancy Ryde, Picker- ing. Speaking against Sunday shop- ping, R. Roy says it is important for our families, communities and society in general to have one common pause/rest day per week. "When my father was a young man he had to work 60 hours a week. The workers and unions fought long and hard to get more time off and finally brought the work week down to 40 hours (or 35 in some cases), so that families could enjoy the weekend together. Why go back in time? "We have six days in which to shop; it is not necessary to shop seven days. The retail employees also need a common pause day. Sunday shopping will not all of a sudden provide people with more money so they can spend it on Sunday." - Jean Marsden of Ajax says, "My family day, Sunday, is important to me, therefore I don't want to work Sundays. "There are no rights for retail workers and employers would only hire people who would be willing to work Sundays when needed. Nobody is asking the retail worker how he or she feels about working Sundays. Their needs and opinions are being ignored. "Why not ask these same Sunday shoppers if they want to work Sun- days? Do they want to give up their plans for the weekend drive into the country, the cottage, the Sunday pic- nic, the barbecues? Ask Mr. Otto Jelinek, who's all for Sunday shop- ping, if he is willing to give up his Sundays and work in a store. Retail workers are being swept under the mat while the powers that be are swooping down and stripping away any obstacles in the rush to make Sun- day shopping legal." Whether for it or against it, it looks as if Sunday shopping is here to stay. I don't know if it will boost our econo- my or stop cross border shopping, but the people have spoken and, for once, the government has listened, Hardto believe... Now you've got a Sunday shopping poll of all things which has to be the most biased poll ever dis- tributed. Even I would answer that poll in favor of Sunday shopping and I'm totally against the idea. I would also answer positively to a poll that calls for 24-hour retailing and Christmas day open- ings. But then, it's easy for me because I'm not a retailer and therefore I don't have to worry about the consequences. The fact is, "Shopping" is not the issue. "Forced labor" is. Why don't you put out another poll that asks the question: A) "Would you agree to work every Saturday and Sunday in order to serve the public with seven-dav-per-week shopping privileges'?" Don't for one moment suggest that people will not be obligated to work every weekend for this privilege because that is precisely the issue. Thus far the pesky mol - Zebra hotline DURHAM - Seen a zebra mussel lately? If you have, you're asked to phone a province -wide, toll-free hotline (1-800-563- 7711). The Ontario Federa- tion of Anglers and Hunters and the ministry of natural resources are trying to inform Ontario residents about the effects of zebra mussels and enlist help in slowing down the invasion. "If new and confirmed cases of zebra mussels are referred to our toll- free line, the information will be entered into a computer and will really help in the fight against this great threat," says Dr. Terry Quinney, coor- dinator of fish and wildlife services for the anglers and hunters. The hotline will also field both academic and general public inquiries and offer publications to callers. The thumbnail -sized mollusks were introduced • to the Great Lakes from Europe in the mid-1980s, likely in the ballast water of an ocean-going freighter. Last year zebra mus- sels were sighted in some inland waters, including Lake Simcoe, says infor- mation officer Beth MacKay. She adds that no sightings have yet been recorded in Lake Scugog. Ajax has been the only loca- tion the underwater European invaders have turned up — and in very small numbers. One mollusk was sucked through the intake pipe earlier this year, and there was one last fall, says Lloyd Murray of the region's public works department. To ward off the expected aquatic invasion, he says, defensive measures costing about $1.6 million will soon be complete. Chlorine will be added right at the intake valve, instead of at the water plant (during the high-risk months in the summer). The chlorine prevents the mussels from attaching them- selves to the intake pipe, where they would slowly clog the pipe and "reduce carrying capacity". Fewer spaces for campers are available this year due to budget cutbacks. Nevertheless, the town is offering a variety of camps at last year's prices. Camps run in two-week ses- sions from the end of June to early September. The average cost of sending a child to camp for the whole summer is $77.10 per week. Individual two-week ses- sions are priced at $66 and $71 for a half-day camp while full-day camps cost $144 or $161. Dis- counts apply to a second or third camper registered from the same family. Staff members are trained, experienced and have first-aid skills. Wherever possible, chil- 'r for summer day c*,amp si dren with special needs will be integrated into camps with trained staff to help them. Eight weeks notice of registration is required for campers with special needs. Following is a brief description of camps. Bus transportation is provided from certain stops for all camps except Mini Pidaca. About 20 acres on the east side of the bay slated for townhome development should be kept for public use, council's executive committee decided May 25. The town is hoping the Metro Toronto and Region Conservation Authori- ty will split the cost of the $900,000 parcel of property. Claremont throws summer bash CLAREMONT - A summer festival celebration to mark Canada's 125th birthday is being planned in Claremont. The Claremont Community Association promises something for everyone during the bash, to be held the weekend of June 26- 28. The fun starts with a lip -sync contest Friday, June 28 in the lower level of the Claremont legion hall. Music will be pro- vided by Doc Brown. Only peo- ple 19 years of age or older will be admitted: there's no fee. The event runs from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. On Saturday, June 27, a garage sale and dance will be held in Claremont Park. Anyone wanting to sell goods at the sale can register with Denise Norton at 649-3112. There's a S5 fee for advertising and inclusion on a garage -sale map. Residents are invited to sell all they can during the day, then dance to the music of Rodney and the Almonds from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Local musicians are welcome to join in. Admission is $7 per person, or $6 for anyone wearing a Claremont T-shirt or showing a Claremont Library card. (T- shirts will be sold for S10). The dance is in support of the Clare- mont District Community Asso- ciation and the Claremont Dis- trict Lions Club and no minors will be admitted. A full day of activities will take place in the park Sunday, June 28 to mark Canada's 125th birthday. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., an open church service will be held, followed by remarks from Ontario Riding MP Rene Somens and the singing of Cana- da's national anthem. A strawberry social begins at 12:30 p.m. in the community hall. Admission is $8 for adults and S4 for children. Advance tickets only will k sold by the Claremont Lioness Club. Or, families may wish to pic- nic in the park from noon to l p.m. by taking their own food to a pot -luck luncheon. Hot dogs and sandwiches will be available courtesy of women from the legion. From 1 to 4 p.m., events in the park include a bicycle -deco- rating parade with prizes (call Sandy Hill to register at 649- 2653), hay rides, water -balloon toss, sack races, donut -on -a - string, relay races, horseshoes, tug-of-war, apple bobbing, a shoe kick, and men's slo-pitch. The goal of the June 14 fund- raising festival, being organized by the community group Friends of Frenchman's Bay, is to raise at least S1 from every Pickering res- ident for a total of $64,000. The festival will include many activities taking place at various sites surrounding the bay begin- ning at 10 a.m. Buses will shuttle celebrants who purchase a $1 but- ton from site to site. With the theme Pirates and Peter Pan, the day will include costumed characters and a trea- sure hunt for various prizes. There will be raffles for prizes, including a weekend for two in Montreal and a boat charter for six. The history of Frenchman's Bay will be depicted inside the dredger Primrose, which will be open for tours at Port Pickering Marina The Yacht Club will also offer tours and a display will be hosted by the MTRCA. Festival headquarters will be at West Shore Community Centre, where there will be ongoing enter- tainment, displays and refresh- ments. Other events include boat rides, fishing and casting demon- strations, a midway at the Bay Ridges plaza with pony rides and go karts, a beer garden at the West Shore Community Centre with live entertainment by the band Sundown, a picnic area, and windsurfing demonstrations. A flea market and craft sale will be hosted by the Pickering East Shore Community Associa- tion at the East Shore Community Centre, 910 Liverpool Rd., from 9 a -m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will go to ,Friends of Frenchman's Bay. To celebrate Canada's 125th birthday, festival -goers will be asked to link hands around the bay at 2 p.m. The News Advertiser will pub- lish more information on the event, including a map showing festival sites, at a later date. Whether the product is a computer, television or walkman, prices generally decrease while quality and performance increase. Take video cassette recorders (VCRs) for example. When VCRs were developed in the 1950s, a basic model cost about $120.000. By 1975, when consumer VCRs hit the market, the price dropped to about $1,000, while the number of features increased. Today, VCRs can be purchased for under $400 and offer such extras as freeze frame, one -touch recording, remote control and high-fidelity sound. The VCR story may be an extreme example, but according to the consumer price index, television and video products are the bargain buys of the decade. In 1967, the average retail price of a TV set was $568. Had prices grown with inflation, the average set today would cost 51,682. However, the average price of a TV set in 1983 was only $585, or just $17 more than its predecessor. For comparison, during the same 17 -year period, the costs of food and beverages went up nearly 200 percent, housing increased 229 percent, medical care soared 270 percent and airline fares skyrocketed by 330 percent. But, stable prices are only part of the story. While costs have remained virtually unchanged over the years, the values in video products have increased dramatically. Sophisticated options like remote control electronic tuning and automatic color monitoring systems, once available only on expensive 'high-end' models, are now standard features on many lower-priced televisions. Kcith Klebacha, 17, a member of the Pickering Swim Club, will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to compete in the Ultra Swim Competition on the June 1 31h weekend. There, the freestyle specialist will swim against members of the U.S. Olympic Swim Team in a meet which will serve as a tune-up for the americans going to 13,i-,:clona in July.
